Why let a lovely child
grow up like this
THE
MISSES :
FROM THE FATHER OF A SPASTIC CHILD
Because a few years ago few facilities existed and
few people knew about the problem, a handful of
parents like myself came together because we were
determined to give our children every possible chance.
We feel, some would say with a sublime faith, that
with long and patient treatment and training most of
our children can be helped a great deal. Well, for
some of our children it is going to mean years of
continuous treatment, but we know from experience
that treatment and training does help. It is an
unlucky accident of nature and we are helping nature
to try and put right this accident.
Your sympathy and wonderful help has sustained
our faith and the courage of our children. There is
much more we have to do, and I know that you will
help us.
May I on behalf of parents of spastic children and
adult spastics everywhere say, very sincerely, thank
you.
//Mrs

Chairman, National Spastics Society.
TO ALL WHO
LOVE CHILDREN
THE
AND
The National Spastics Society sincerely thank
the following members of the Theatrical and
Entertainment professions for their help this afternoon
For John and thousands of Spastic
children like him it is a desperate
race against time. The State can't
help quickly enough
ALL THAT we parents have been able to do for our
children and older spastics—treatment centres, schools,
medical research—has only been made possible because
of the heartening support people like yourselves up and
down the country have given us.
Most children learn to eat, walk, talk, sit down and
stand up without any trouble. Such acts are easy for
them because their muscles work together.
Their
muscles do what they want them to do because they
have control of them.
But our children, born with cerebral palsy, do not
have control of all their muscles. As a result they
often find it difficult to do some of the most simple
acts of everyday life.
Cerebral palsy means a weakness or lack of
muscular control due to damage to the brain. This
damage may result because some part of the brain
did not grow or develop before birth as it should.
Sometimes the brain is damaged while the baby is
being born.

NATIONAL
SPASTICS
SOCIETY
was formed in 1952 by a group of
parents who were fighting for the
future of their children, who are born
with half a birthright, determined to
give them a chance in life.
In four years the Society has grown
to over 120 groups of parents in
England and Wales with a member
ship of over 5,000. This just begins
to show how large the problem is.
There are thousands of more spastics
who need help.
In its comparatively short- life the
N.S.S. has set up:
24 local treatment centres.
3 special residential schools.
I residential home and shel
tered workshop.
A five year £45,000 medical
research programme.
These are worthwhile achievements
and fill an urgent need. But they are
not enough.
Much more needs to be done if we
are to give Britain's spastics—children
and adults—the chance of a place
in life. And money is needed to do
it—ONE MILLION POUNDS
Every donation received brings the
target nearer and hastens the day
when every spastic child will have
his chance.
