GAY CITY HEALTH PROJECT
Gay City Health Project is a multicultural gay men’s health organization
and the leading provider of HIV and STI testing in King County. Our
mission is to promote the health of gay and bisexual men and prevent
HIV transmission by building community, fostering communication,
and nurturing self-esteem.
15 YEARS 0F BUILDING A HEALTH GAY COMMUNITY
Josh Hall
Gay City Volunteer & Donor
I am Gay City because they’ve
given me the opportunity to
become involved and serve
the Seattle gay community in
ways I never thought possible. I
have been able to meet such a
diverse group of people, who I
may not have met otherwise.
Their efforts to promote a
healthy gay community reach
beyond traditional gay men’s
health, from sponsoring a sober
softball team to providing
opportunities to learn about
new and controversial topics
such as PrEP. Their involvment in
the community is profound, and
my life has been enriched by
working with such an incredible
organization.
The year 2010 was marked by a number of highs and lows for the LGBT
community. There was increased national attention on the problem of
gay teen suicide. There was a national rally around a lesbian teen’s
simple desire to attend her high school’s prom with her girlfriend.
There were a record number of victories by LGBT politicians in the
national mid-term elections. There was the realization of empowerment
through personal action with the Make it Better project.
Last year also marked the 15th anniversary for Gay City Health Project.
Born out of the need for health officials, educators, and activists to
find innovative strategies to reach those most at risk for HIV infection,
Gay City has enjoyed 15 years of building a healthy gay community.
Our longevity is a result of adapting to the changing needs of gay and
bisexual men, staying current with successful prevention strategies,
and having an amazing amount of community support from volunteers
and donors.
Despite the economic uncertainty that continues to affect us all, Gay
City continues to expand much needed programs and services to queer
men and the LGBT community as a whole. It’s through support such
as yours that we are able to extend our work to meet the needs of our
community as other resources dwindle.
HEALTH
Wellness Center: Gay City is the leading
community-based provider of free, anonymous HIV/
STI testing and free Hepatitis A & B vaccinations in
King County. Our Wellness Center opened in 2004 in
order to provide HIV testing in a welcoming, peerbased environment. Last year we provided more than
2,300 HIV tests, reaching a record number of gay, bi
and trans men who have sex with men. We continue
to reach historically marginalized, underserved, or
high risk populations:
“The education I received
while volunteering at Gay
City helped me realize that
I wasn’t alone.”
The need was there. Gay City identified 31% more new HIV
infections in 2010 than in 2009. We’ve made a real difference in
our community by being able to connect these men to the resources
they will need to stay healthy and a community they will need to
gain support.

LIFE
Building a healthy community requires more from us than simply
providing testing and vaccination services, though. Gay City
provides our clients with access to resources and a community of
peers that better enables them to make healthy choices. We remain
focused on promoting the holistic health of all gay, bi, and trans
men in the Seattle area: physical, mental, social, political, and
spiritual health. We remain committed to the vision of a healthy,
united, inclusive, gifted, and powerful gay community. To that end,
Gay City offers programs that touch the members of our community
in a variety of ways.
Gay City University: In 2010, 125 students,
instructors, and volunteers gathered at The Northwest
School in order to share with and learn from their gay,
bi, and trans male peers and allies. In an internetconnected and increasingly impersonal world, Gay
City University provides a much needed opportunity
for real-time, personal, face-to-face interaction. It’s
also our longest running program.
Queerituality: A monthly reading and discussion
group for gay, bi, and trans men, Queerituality is
focused on exploring our distinct spiritual experience,
heritage, and gifts as queer men. Dozens of men
meet regularly each month for reading, conversation,
films, and outings around the growth of their queer
spirituality.
I am Gay City because they’ve
had a life changing effect on
me. When I came out as gay in
2002, I never would’ve imagined
that a few years later I’d be
in a committed relationship
with a woman. The education
I received while volunteering
at Gay City helped me realize
that I wasn’t alone. Bisexuality
exists in our community and
throughout the world.
I’ve had the privilege of
volunteering at Gay City for the
past 3 years. You can really tell
that the staff cares for the well
being of everyone who walks
through the door. It’s definitely
a team effort and I feel blessed
to be apart of it.
Gay City Arts: We are a proud supporter of queer
and queer-friendly arts, and include a variety of
artistic programming as part our mission. In 2010, we
published the 3rd volume of our Gay City Anthologies,
a creative forum for previously unpublished comic art,
fiction, poetry, and photography. We also presented
the Seattle premiere of The Infection Monologues,
a touching, humorous, and thought provoking
performance that challenges the way we think about
the contemporary experience of men living with HIV.
“Seattle is a much more
inclusive community
because of Gay City.”
Gay City Sports: Organized athletics help to
improve overall health on many levels: physical,
mental, and social. Fortunately, the Seattle area has
a vibrant LGBT sports community. Gay City adds to
the mix with Team Gay City, our annual Seattle to
Portland Classic bicycle team, and the Seattle SNAP, a
Gay City sponsored sober ECSA softball team.
Sarah Toce
Editor,
TheSeattleLesbian.com
I am Gay City because they
have shown such tremendous
support for The Seattle Lesbian.
Their community commitment,
hard work, dedication to our
LGBT brothers and sisters,
and affirming messages are
unparalleled. Seattle is a much
more
inclusive
community
because of Gay City’s impetus
to bring together different
communities of LGBT folks.
Through research, educational
programs, health seminars,
community sponsorship, forums,
and more, Gay City continues to
have a positive effect on the
community.
COMMUNITY
By virtue of our mission, Gay City continues to be an organization
dedicated to serving gay, bi, and trans men. Building a healthy gay
community, however, is about more than gay men caring for gay
men. It’s also about gay men serving the broader community. It’s
about challenging the notions of who gay men are, and who they
care about.
In 2010, we continued to recognize and affirm our responsibility
to the broader LGBT community and to our society as a whole.
We responded to the needs of the larger community when our
experience and competencies allowed us to do so responsibly.
LGBT Resource and Referral Line: Part of
building a healthy community is connecting LGBT
people to the incredible resources available in Seattle
and beyond. By managing Seattle’s LGBT Resource
and Referral Line, Gay City was able to provide more
than 1,800 referrals last year to clients seeking access
to community resources.
Gay City LGBT Library: In 2009, Gay City Health
Project began to house and staff the LGBT Library
after the closing of the Seattle LGBT Community
Center. Last year the Gay City LGBT Library grew to
a collection of over 2,200 volumes covering a wide
range of LGBT topics. Staffed by volunteers, the Gay
City LGBT library is a valuable community resource.
Community members donate books, CDs and DVDs
which can all be checked out for free.
SHIFT Peer Recovery Network: Last year was the
3rd year of Gay City’s participation in SHIFT, a program
that provides resources, events, and community for
LGBT people in recovery. We continued to organize
substance-free events attended by hundreds of
participants, including art workshops, game nights,
Halloween and Pride parties, Thanksgiving dinner,
and even a square dance hoedown.
Tobactivism: In 2010, we continued to act on
our sense of social justice through our role as the
Washington State contractor charged with addressing
tobacco-related health disparities among LGBT
individuals. We also continued provide innovative
community leadership by leveraging the power of
grant funding to take on the role of presenting sponsor
at the 2011 Seattle Pride Fest celebration, allowing us
to work with businesses and organizations that serve
our community to develop policies for assisting their
LGBT employees who wish to reduce or stop their
tobacco use.
Gay City Health Project was founded in response to the needs of
our community. As we continue to grow and change based on
those changing needs, our commitment to our community remains
as strong as ever. We recognize that our community’s health is
dependent upon the health of the broader community of which we
are a part. We also recognize that our success in meeting those
needs depends on your support. The success of our programs
and services comes from the incredible support we receive from
volunteers, donors, local businesses and partnering organizations.
Thank you for helping us to achieve 15 fabulous years in
service to our community!
Sincerely,
Fred Swanson

“Gay City truly meets LGBT
people right where they’re
at.”
Bill Dubay
Gay City Donor
I am Gay City because we are
not afraid of communicating
what’s important in a clear,
direct way. When others would
be tempted to shy away from
a topic, Gay City embraces the
challenge of talking about it in
ordinary, everyday language.
This continues to be a vital and
effective method of outreach,
and shows that Gay City truly
meets LGBT people right where
they’re at.

I am Gay City because they’ve

HIV

smoking cessation, building
healthy community networks,
disseminating positive messages,
providing safe and supportive
social activities, and providing
outlets for creative expression
are just some of the ways
that Gay City’s programs have
benefited our LGBT community.
As a board member at Gay City
for eight years, I contributed
time and effort in participation,
