PAGE 2 • GREAT FUTURES START HERE President 's Message A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADER In 2012, our clubs and summer camp offered more than 11,500 inner-city children academic, art and athletic programs in an environment free from drugs, gangs and violence. The Union League Boys and Girls Clubs provides a positive atmosphere to help young people grow into responsible and productive citizens. Did you know...? We served more than 11,500 members in 2012. • • • • • • Our average daily attendance at the Club sites was 1,068 during the school year and 1,182 in the summer months. We served 297,038 meals to club members, 92% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch. We provided hands-on science, technology and music programming for members who would otherwise have none. We awarded 25 college scholarships to members who need financial support. We renovated and expanded our 120-year-old Club One facility in the Pilsen Community. These are exciting times for the Union League Boys and Girls Clubs. The accomplishments of the past year would not have been possible without the dedication and contributions of our Board of Trustees, Volunteers, Executive Director and staff. We thank them for their generosity and continued support. On a somber note, we remember Trustees and friends of our Boys and Girls Clubs, who have recently passed away – Anthony Batko, Milton Darr and George Sinka. Their spirit and legacy of benevolence will remain with the Clubs forever. We are thankful for all the caring people who help our clubs positively impact the lives of Chicago's youth. Your continued investment in the children of the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs helps them to achieve their dreams, grow into productive, caring citizens, and become leaders of their families and communities. This safe haven for our members is only 65 miles north of Chicago and occupies 247 acres of land. We have a lake, lagoon, high & low ropes course, sports fields, hiking trails and much, much more to provide our youth a respite from urban pressures. Camp is a magical place where Club members learn skills such as camping, sports and swimming along with independence, cooperation and communication. Club members learn these skills by participating in a well developed program centered safety and fun. Camp offers a wide variety of activities such as archery, boating, high ropes climbing, camping, swimming, nature studies and arts & crafts to name a few. Youth need a sense of independence as they grow and mature through life and Camp allows each one to gain this sense of independence in a structured and safe environment. Camp staff is made up of university students with a passion for youth work. We participate in a program that allows us to employ staff from other countries like Australia, New Zealand, England or Scotland. In addition to their background and qualifications, our staff participate in an intensive staff training before Camp begins. Our number one priority is the safety of our campers. Our qualified and trained staff make it their mission to keep members safe and happy. CAMP TRADITIONS & ACTIVITIES Native American Culture is very important to our Camp and we honor it in our Red Tip Ceremony. Our Red Tip Ceremony is one of the oldest traditions at Camp. A Red Tip is the highest honor one can achieve at the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs Camp.
