GREAT FUTURES START HERE ! 4TH QUARTER 2012 CLUB NEWS A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OUR GENEROUS SPONSORS The Golden Isles Festival of Trees was another fun event and a very successful fundraiser. A BIG thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, attendees, members, and the Festival of Trees Planning Committee: Jennifer Blackerby, Brenda Kilgore, Hillary Stringfellow, and Kelly Waldron. On behalf of the teens and staff at the Elizabeth F. Correll Teen Center we thank you for your support! STEAM GRANT AWARDED TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SE GA. The Governor's Office for Children and Families supports healthy choices and academic achievement. Six grants have been awarded to existing programs to increase long term healthy choices among the target population, while increasing academic achievement, by adding at least one of the following services to their program: nutritious snacks or meals, fitness services, health services, grade level reading services, or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). GOCF is proud to announce the the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia Inc. will receive $40,000 The Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Georgia will provide STEAM services to high school youth living in low income families at risk of dropping out of school by offering two ten week courses that incorporate Robotics, Club Technology and Video Production programming. A GREAT VISIT Mr. Jim Clark, President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America stopped in for a visit October 18th. He toured the Elizabeth F. Correll Teen Center, St. Simons Island Club, Terrill Thomas Unit, and The Club at Needwood before making his way over to witness the great charity event at Sea Island, the McGladrey Classic. 4TH QUARTER 2012 heroes who have served this great nation. The club members really got into the spirit and got to hang out with Bat Girls, Iron Man, Super Man, and Pajama Girl just to name a few. We talked about the sacrifices our veterans made and make every day to protect our future and our freedom as Americans. Thank you to all our HEROS! Keep Georgia Beautiful affiliate. The vision is to be litter free, to have 100% participation in recycling, and to be the most beautiful community (Glynn County) in Georgia. It is a perfect example of good citizenship and community service for our club members. Thank you to all our club members and staff for their hard work and commitment to Keeping Glynn Beautiful! SWING FOR KIDS MCGLADREY CLASSIC YOUTH DAY Mr. Clark sent a very nice letter about our staff and facilities and we have it posted on our website at www.apositiveplace.net under “club news” 2012 PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR The Boys & Girls Clubs of Georgia awarded Brian Dolan, CPO, Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia Inc. as 2012 Professional of the Year. The State of Georgia serves over 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 yo u t h annually and we are very proud to have Brian lead our organization. Congratulations on the award and thank you for all your efforts! SUPERHERO DAY On Veteran’s day at the Terrill Thomas Unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia we hosted a Superhero day to honor our country’s WWW.APOSITIVEPLACE.NET / Prior to McGladrey Classic a PGA Golf Tournament at Sea Island the golfers club members over for a Youth Day. The kids were amazed by Chuck “The Hit Man” Hiter infamous trick shot show. There was also a putting tournament with PGA TOUR professionals, Special Olympics, and Boys and Girls Club members. First, second and third-place winners took home trophies, but everyone who participated in the tournament left a little richer for the experience. The St. Simons Island Rotary Club sponsored the Swing for Kids Golf Tournament in conjunction with Nalley Auto and McGladrey Classic as a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia. The unique thing about this tournament is each team was paired up with a club member. It was a great fundraiser and a fun way to introduce our members to a Golf Tournament. A great introduction to golf, just how much fun it is, and how difficult of a game it can be! A FULL FALL FESTIVAL KEEP GLYNN BEAUTIFUL In November the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia was awarded with the leading organization in “Keep Glynn Beautiful” . The Keep G l y n n Beautiful initiative is officially recognized as a Keep America Beautiful/ THEECTC.COM On October 31st Terrill Thomas was host to over 400 club members, siblings, parents, grandparents, and volunteers enjoyed fun games, face painting, haunted trolley rides, and of much more. Thank you to all who volunteered for our Fall Festival: Brunswick High School’s Beta Club and National Honor Society, and Ms. Carol Adam’s. PAGE 2 GREAT FUTURES START HERE ! Janeiya Williams Youth of the Year MCINTYRE COURT - Janeiya attends The Club 5 days per week and sets a tremendous example for all of her club peers. She exemplifies excellence in everything she does at home, school and at The Club. She can always be counted on to help out her peers, staff members and the younger club members who sometimes need help with their homework. Zhane Waye Youth of the Year THE CLUB AT NEEDWOOD - Zhane is a 6th grade student at Needwood Middle School. She loves attending The Club and has been a member of since she was very little. While at The Club, Zhane continuously gives a helping hand to whomever needs it and always comes in with such a positive attitude. Her outlook on life is so inspiring and it really makes those around her smile. She is always focusing on her studies and often time encourages the other members around her to study with her. Eisa Wiley Youth of the Year T H E C LU B AT RISLEY - Eisa is 6 years old and attends Satilla Marsh Elementary School. Eisa is one of our most well behaved students/ members here at WWW.APOSITIVEPLACE.NET / 4TH QUARTER 2012 The Club at Risley. He is very helpful and cooperative when he is called upon, and always treats all the staff and other members with upmost respect. His favorite color is blue, and loves to eat chicken nuggets. When he is at The Club, he loves to play pool. Tashuana Hicks Youth of the Year THE CLUB AT JANE MACON Tashuana attends the 7th grade at Jane Macon Middle School. While at The Club, she is always willing to help anyone that needs it. If there was ever anyone that needed someone to talk to, she is always there for them. We hear she is just as helpful at School as she is at The Club. She can always be seen with a smile on her face and she always does her best to make sure everyone around her wearing one as well. We are proud of The Club’s social butterfly! Thomas Lindsey Youth of the Year ST. SIMONS ISLAND UNIT -Thomas has been a fixture at The Club for over 6 years, an extremely well-rounded young man. He is an all A Honor roll student as well as a great athlete. Known around The Club as Yo-Yoman, Thomas can usually be found doing all kinds of tricks with his yo-yo. A 7th grader at Glynn Middle Thomas loves math and science and would one day like to attend Stanford University to become an engineer. Thomas is always polite, respectful, and a positive influence w i t h everyone. THEECTC.COM Quincey Miller Youth of the Year TERRILL THOMAS UNIT - Quincey is 9 years old and has been attending the Club for almost 3 years. The growth that we have seen in Quincey is phenomenal and admirable. Quincey has matured tremendously and is constantly showing us the correct ways to handle conflict any problems that may arise throughout his day. Quincey is an upstanding y o u n g gentleman who loves to have fun but is also focused on doing well in school. Darnell Aldridge Youth of the Year GLYNNVILLA UNIT - Darnell attends the club 5 days s week and strives to set a positive example for all other members at the club. He acts as an example during routine by never heisting to lend a helping hand to others in need of help. Darnell can often be found helping young members with their homework as well as reading a book from the bookshelf to them. Darnell enjoys playing pool and air hockey with his friends when he attends the club. Darnell sets a wonderful example for the rest of the k i d s at t h e Club. PAGE 3 GREAT FUTURES START HERE ! 3RD QUARTER 2012 BULLYING HURTS ECTC HAD A GREAT YEAR Raise your hand. The solution starts here. The program the Real Life continues to grow in the number of classes offered and the number of teens joining in. This quarter we’ve added Culinary Arts, Defensive Tactics, Coastal Ecology and Art Journaling and look to offer even more in 2013. The mission of the Real Life Program is to make our local teens more employable and increase the amount of trained entry level employees in our community. Boys & Girls Clubs of America has joined with Sears and a coalition of other nonprofits for the Team Up to Stop Bullying campaign. Team Up To Stop Bullying is an initiative developed by Sears to connect bullying solutions with victims, families, educators, schools and communities. This website offers a wide variety of information, solutions and services from a comprehensive list of leading bullying solutions organizations and programs. When parents discover bullying, the situation is often already serious and many parents don't know where to go for help. Team Up To Stop Bullying makes it easier for those affected by bullying to find solutions for all types of situations, including individual needs, community-based issues or school-based challenges. As an additional way to express support, parents, children and victims who visit the site are invited to take the "Power Pledge" as well as find solutions that work for their own students miss school bullying issue. 160,000 each day due to bullying Brunswick, GA 31521-1193 Brunswick, GA 31521-1193 Some Highlights • October we had six teens participat in a Kiwanis Key Leadership retreat at Epworth by the Sea. Twelve of our Teens participated in the McGladrey Classes Youth Day with Davis Love III, one of our Teens • November we hosted a FamilyThanksgiving Dinner for our Teens and their family. • December: ECTC hosted the Winter Carnival for the entire community was invited to celebrate the holiday season.
