HANGAR INTERVENTION
MACRO FUNCTION
My kinetic exploration is translated into a new ceiling structure that
hangs from the existing wooden glulam structure within Howard
Hughe’s hangar. Soundproofing panels in fill the wall to ceiling structure.
The new ceiling contains all of the functions necessary for an filming
studio, while creating flexible space within the massive hangars. The
ceiling is constructed to raise and lower, depending on the intended
use and size of production. When lowered, the space above the ceiling
becomes occupiable as another sound stage.
APERTURE STUDY
CONCEPT
An initial interest in the pixellation of an
image and its representation through
various apertures led me to the creation of
this kinetic object. The physical object is
only a 9 square grid section of an intended
surface of these cells. Each cells is held in
place through a system of vertical structure
and horizontal planes guiding the vertical
movement. The movement starts with the
rotation of a servo motor and is translated
with wire through the structure to create
the resulting rotation. A faceted mylar skin,
formed through a geometric exploration
of scoring and folding a single surface,
clads each cell. The mylar skin allows for
spatial definition while remaining light and
translucent.
MOVEMENT
A separation of static structure and kinetic
structure creates a simple controlled
movement. Gravity and the rotation of the
servo allows the skin to open up, while
the retraction of the wire pulls the vertical

structure back up, closing the skin. At four
points around the base of the secondary
structure, the kinetic translation occurs
with a series of connections at three
rotation points.

MICRO FUNCTION
The hydraulic actuators work together to create the forces
necessary for the ceiling to function. The actuators are
connected to a vertically flexible, yet horizontally rigid
framework that allows each cell to drop vertically into the
activated space, yet not stray out of position. Each unit in this
framework reacts to compressive forces by opening up. As
one actuator is extended and another in recessed, tension

and compression forces are working on the gridded surface.
The lowest cells, under the most compressive forces open
up, and pass on the compressive force to its neighbors. A
gradient falloff occurs between the actuators as the tensile and
compressive forces become neutral towards the middle. The
ceiling creates a flexible framework without the necessity of
each cell being individually controlled.
The ceiling functions [including air conditioning, lighting, and
intake] are divided within the new grid and become activated as they
drop down into the studio spaces. Hydraulic actuators are positioned
around the grid to provide optimal flexibility. As an actuator extends
the cells around it open up and activate the space. The exterior skin of
each cell is made of soundproofing material to aid in the much needed
reduction of sound. The skin structure provides hanging support for
necessary set pieces.
