The Practice
The company is an RIBA chartered
practice based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire
with a secondary office in central London.
EHW has built up a broad client base over
the years and the practice has undertaken
schemes from modest house extensions to
projects with a construction value of over
£250 million, mainly in the UK, although
projects have been undertaken throughout
the world.
Whether projects are new-build or
refurbishment,
straightforward
or
challenging, each is tackled with the same
degree of commitment and enthusiasm.
As a founder member of ASBA (the
Association of Self-Build Architects) we
are also dedicated to helping self-builders
achieve their dreams and aspirations
for a truly individual home by providing
a complete architectural service from
inception to completion.
The majority of projects require us to
use our full range of skills and we are
fully conversant and happy to work in all
disciplines.
Our Services
Architecture I Planning I Project Management
With a full complement of highly experienced Chartered Architects, Interior Designers and Architectural Technologists, EHW provides
a complete and competent architectural service.
We are able to offer advice on all sizes of residential, commercial, healthcare, industrial, education and leisure projects, including new
build, conversions, extensions and re-development.
Introduction | page 1
Residential
Over the years the practice has provided
a comprehensive service for clients on
nearly all building types, although the
residential sector has historically been a
major emphasis.
We are regularly commissioned by
independent developers and private
clients alike, all requiring a special and
unique design to fulfil their aspirations
for a single dream home or a small select
group of dwellings which are designed and
built in accordance with individual needs,
budgets, land restrictions and planning
constraints.
In addition, we continually work in
conjunction with large national housing
developers and Housing Associations on
sites of hundreds of units. This requires
our urban design and master planning
skills to provide a mix of flats and houses
over a large site area for which we also
provide comprehensive planning and
working drawing packages.

Large Bespoke Houses
EHW have undertaken the design of a
number of large bespoke houses for private
clients. Due to their sheer volume and
impact on their surroundings, they require
a very different approach to their smaller
relations. With our blend of experience
and creativity, including town planning
and interior design services, we are well
placed to advise clients in this sector.
Our projects include the 5,110 sq.m (55,000
sq.ft) Updown Court in Windlesham,
2,973sq.m (32,000 sq.ft) Little Rhondda in
St Georges Hill and the 1,672 sq.m (18,000
sq.ft) Green Coppers in Sevenoaks.

Listed Buildings &
Conversions
EHW
have
completed
numerous
refurbishments of listed buildings and
conversions of unusual properties.
Listed buildings require a very patient
and sensitive approach from both clients
and designers to maximise their potential
whilst retaining their historic legacy. In
contrast, conversions require vision and a
degree of risk to maximise their potential.
Our projects range from the conversion
of twenty three office suites to highspec residential apartments in the listed
building at Westminster Palace Gardens,
to the conversion of existing barns into
seven luxury dwellings in the grounds of
Lordship Farm in Willian, to the conversion
to a single residential dwelling of the Grade
II listed Bailey Hill water tower.

Barn Conversions
EHW have been fortunate over recent
years to work on numerous barn
conversions which challenge our team to
deliver stunning interiors at the same time
as conserving the existing structure of
the barn. Projects of this nature generally
involve protracted negotiations with
the Planning/Design and Conservation
Officers and a fair degree of patience and
persuasion.
Our projects include seven luxury homes
at Lordship Farm Barns in Willian, three
dwellings at Normans Farm Barns
for Letchworth Garden City Heritage
Foundation, also in Willian, a large
conversion at Brookend Farm in St
Ippolyts, and two large Grade II Listed
family homes at Hall Farm Barns, Langley.

Self Build Projects
As founding members of the Association
of Self Build Architects (ASBA), EHW
are regularly commissioned to work with
clients to develop their ideas into reality.
Whether it is a refurbishment or new build
project we explore every potential of a
given building or site in order to maximise
our clients’ investment.
Our projects include a 557sq.m (6,000sq.
ft) three-storey contemporary property in
Clophill, a 279sq.m (3,000 sq.ft) property
set in an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty and a 260sq.m (2,800 sq ft)
traditional family home in St Albans which
was featured on Breakfast TV.

Individual
Developments
EHW have developed a particular niche
in residential projects for independent
developers. These often require very
different design solutions depending on
the shape, size and location of the site.
We work hard to make our developments
sustainable and many of them are designed
to comply with Lifetime Homes, Code for
Sustainable Homes and Secured by Design
criteria.
Since opening our London office, we
have worked closely with an independent
developer on high specification projects,
in particular the conversion of twenty
three office suites at Westminster Palace
Gardens to luxury apartments. This has
prompted a second developer to employ
the practice to convert further suites in the
same building. Other projects include the
conversion of 21 & 23 Buckingham Palace
Road and Victoria Chambers, SW1 into
luxury apartments.

Projects in the Home Counties have
included twelve new build properties at
Elm Tree Farm, Pirton, seven new build
executive homes at Willow Farm, Ivinghoe
Aston, and fourteen private dwellings at
South Road, Baldock.

Volume House Building
In contrast to the smaller individual
developments, EHW have been working
alongside large national developers
for many years and have produced
numerous traditional and contemporary
housing schemes. Our expertise in this
area enables us to find the most efficient
blend of private houses, flats and Housing
Association accommodation.
We undertake both the master planning
of new developments, full planning
applications, and the preparation of
working drawing packages for schemes
where planning consent has been granted.
Our clients include Bellway Homes, Linden
Homes, Galliard Homes, Kier, Shanly
Homes, Wheatley Homes, and Rowan
Homes. We have Framework Agreements
with Bellway Homes (North London),
Bellway Homes (Northern Home Counties)
and Linden Homes (Chiltern) so regularly
provide feasibility schemes for tender
purposes, planning schemes and working
drawing packages.

Master Planning &
Urban Design
EHW are regularly commissioned as
architects for large housing developers
and Housing Associations on major
regeneration projects. This requires our
master planning and urban design skills,
usually for a mix of flats and houses over
a large site area, for which we also provide
comprehensive planning and working
drawing packages.
The sites we have worked on to date
are generally Brownfield in town and
city centres although we have provided
feasibility schemes for a wide range of
sites throughout the country. With our inhouse planning expertise, we are able to
also offer Planning Policy advice to assist
the developers with their long-term aims
for specific sites.

Commercial
Office & Industrial
Our expertise in new build, refurbishment
and fit-out spans the whole commercial
sector, and has ranged from smallscale extensions to large purpose built
commercial facilities.
EHW have been the project architects
on a number of highly individual office
and industrial projects. From inception
through to completion, we work hard to
ensure complete co-operation between
fellow consultants so that developments
are completed to deadline and within
budget.
At EHW we strive to provide our clients with
creative, cost-effective, low maintenance
design solutions on both traditional and
design & build procurement routes.
The practice has also been involved in
a number of projects, particularly for
industrial buildings, which have been on a
Design & Build basis together with various
local and national contractors.
Commercial clients have included FTSE,
Swiss Re, Texaco Plc, British Airways,
Monarch Airlines, HR Owen Plc and Volvo
Cars London.

EHW have an enviable reputation for
producing high quality design solutions
in the automotive sector. The practice’s
experience gained over recent years gives
us the ability to advise on both new build,
conversions and fit outs.
The practice has now designed and project
managed numerous new build, conversion
and refurbishment schemes for a wide
range of clients.
Many projects have
been undertaken on existing dealerships
that had to continue trading throughout
the works. The understanding of this
specialised business sector enables EHW
to provide a unique service for the highly
individual motor manufacturers.

Fit Out
Many clients prefer to lease property to
undertake their business activities. At
EHW we have extensive experience of this
specialist market sector. From assessing
vacant space for suitability to developing
unique design solutions, we can assist our
clients throughout the process.
Projects have included the refurbishment
and fit out of head offices for FTSE in
Canary Wharf and CIPD in London through
Colliers International, and the fit out of the
new head office for World Courier (UK)
Ltd in Central London.

and large department stores, EHW tailors the
retailers’ corporate identity and specification
to a given space or building. We also have
experience in working alongside the retailers’
overseas architects and designers assisting
them with the UK interpretation of their ideas.
Clients have included Hugo Boss, House of
Fraser, Ralph Lauren and Princess Yachts
International.

individually tailored to suit each client and
development proposal, each team being
managed at Director level. By undertaking
this we maintain continuity and a close
working relationship with our clients, their
agents, other consultants and the contractor.
We do not limit ourselves to the size of project
undertaken but prefer to evaluate each project
on its own merits.
Our design and technical teams have enjoyed
a long and close working relationship with
some of the UK’s leading contractors. Our
overall expertise in this specialist sector also
extends to providing services to various local
authorities, both directly and via framework
