Blake Gamez heads to state in powerlifting for the second time on April 2 La Porte High School senior Blake Gamez will advance to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championships in Abilene on Saturday, April 2, after placing first at the regional meet on March 5. Blake, who also qualified for the state contest last year, will compete in the Division 1, 123-lb. weight class. At the regional competition, he lifted a total of 1,080 lbs. – a 420 lb. squat, 235 lb. bench press and 425 lb. deadlift. The squat and bench press lifts at regionals were personal bests for Blake. The state championships will be held at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. Blake placed 10th in the state at last year’s contest. Blake is the son of Kim Whilley and Ray Gamez. La Porte ISD earns Super Show award at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo For the fourth year in a row, La Porte ISD has earned the prestigious Super Show award in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s School Art Program. The announcement was made at the annual awards presentation held on March 6. The Super Show award is given to school districts that are deemed as having truly outstanding art shows and exhibitions. LPISD was one of 32 districts from throughout the state that received this honor. Representing La Porte ISD at the show were district Best of Show winners Tess Wilson, junior at La Porte High School; Edyamin Hinojosa, seventh grader at Lomax Junior High School; and Tyler Harmon, third grader at College Park Elementary. Representing LPISD as district gold medalists were Britney Loerwald, La Porte High School freshman; Joanna Munoz, La Porte High School sophomore; Kayleigh Bland, Lomax Junior High School eighth grader; and Calista Beck, Bayshore Elementary fourth grader. La Porte ISD also was named a Super Show for the fourth consecutive year. Seven members of the La Porte High School Bulldog boys basketball team earned All-District honors this season. Senior Alex Hobbs and junior Trace Womble were named to the First Team AllDistrict. Alex was also named Region 21-6A Most Valuable Player and was selected to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Region and All-State Teams. He will also play in the TABC All-Star Game in May 2016. Senior Drew Harris was named to the Second Team All-District. Senior Cameron Escobar, junior Trey Farley and sophomore Dominic Warner earned Honorable Mention All-District honors. They are under the direction of head coach Barry Gibson and assistant coach Chuck Hobbs. LPHS UIL one-act play advances to April 2 bi-district contest La Porte High School will advance to the bi-district round of the University Interscholastic League one-act play competition after an outstanding performance at the District 21 6-A contest on March 24 at Lee College. The LPHS cast and crew, presenting scenes from Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig, will compete on Saturday, April 2, at Dickinson High School. The contest begins at 1:30 p.m., with LPHS performing second. Admission is $5 to see all of the competing shows. At the district contest, LPHS junior Soul Schillaci and senior Samantha Beacham were named to the All-Star Cast, with junior Kendal Zemanek named Outstanding Technician. The cast includes Soul and Samantha as George Hay and Charlotte Hay, respectively, with Casey Boriskie as Ethel, Maureen Gallington as Rosalind, and Adrian Escareno as Howard. Grace Lassetter plays the part of Eileen, with Jonathan Flores as Paul and Jason Barron as Richard. Crew members include Kendal Zemanek, Aleya Cook, Georgia Zaborowski, Sara McCabe and Rebecca Salinas. Alternates are Marlyn Beltran and McCade Fletcher. The one-act play is under the direction of Kerry Regan, Kelly Nelson and Steve Regan. Lomax Junior High UIL one-act play wins awards at March 5 competition Several Lomax Junior High students earned top awards at the UIL one-act play competition held at Friendswood Junior High School on March 5. The Lomax Junior High School one-act play cast and crew, under the direction of Andrea Angelo, were awarded third place for “Reynard the Fox.” Luke Boriskie was named to the All-Star Cast, and Abbygaile Mireles received the Technical Crew Honor Award. Braeden Christen received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, as did seven members of the “Ant Ensemble”—Blake Christen, Talyana Meadows, Kylie Nutt, Rebekah Phillips, Nikki Rebstock, Jaeden Sweatt, Rachel Wise and Breanna Zupan. Members of the Lomax Junior High cast and crew also included Hunter Anderson, Zach Axtell, Cynthia Bell, Jessica Cruz-Porter, Tiffany Goldstein, Kaitlyn Hanson, Eric Navarro, Christina Owens, Cole Reed, Jackie Soria and Kayla Waters. Jennie Reid Elementary fourth grade students introduced the Word of the Month for April, Responsibility, by showing fellow students scenarios of responsible or irresponsible behaviors and asking which scenario showed responsible behavior. Al Bledsoe, guest speaker from Pasadena High School, encouraged students to be responsible, listen to parents and teachers, and stay in school. Progress continues on La Porte ISD 2014 bond program projects The exterior of the new career and technical education center at La Porte High School nears completion. This photo shows the west side of the building, which is located just off of San Jacinto Street next to the La Porte ISD Administration Building. The center will be completed this summer and will open for students with the start of the 2016-17 school year. The La Porte ISD athletic complex is full of activity on a recent evening as, from left, the softball field, tennis courts, baseball field and, in the background, the football stadium are lighted for athletic events. The softball field and tennis courts were recently completed as part of the 2014 bond program. The new gymnasium at La Porte Junior High School is also nearing completion. The gym is under construction at the south side of the campus. Brick work continues on the new fine arts facility at La Porte High School, which will be completed this summer. The center is located just east of Bulldog Stadium and will house the band, orchestra, choir, art and dance programs.
