Katy Wins a Nail Biter in a Seventh Inning Comeback
By Tom Behrens

If someone watching the Katy – Cinco Ranch girls' softball game Friday
evening, April 24 didn’t know that playoffs spots were already set for both
teams, they would have thought that this game was for the championship.
Excitement and emotions ran high on both teams and for their fans in the
stands. Katy, 12-0 in district play, had already secured the number one seed
in the playoffs and District 19-6A championship. Cinco Ranch, 6-5 in district
competition, had nailed down number four spot for the playoffs which would
begin next week.
“I never ever underestimate Cinco because they won some quality ball games
lately,” said Tiger head coach, Kalum Haack. “They had some momentum and I
knew it was going to be a battle. I told my girls all week, ‘Cinco is playing really
well right now. They are hitting the ball well,’ and sure enough they did.”
In the Cinco Ranch’s first time at the plate, the Cougars plated runs. The
Tigers responded with a zero.
Coach Haack—what did you think after the first inning?
“My first thought was I am going to quit doing senior night on the last ball
game.” Katy honored their seniors who were playing their last regular season
game. “I need to do it some other time. They (Cinco) jumped out ready to play
like I assumed they would. I think the emotions of our senior pitchers before
the ball game, being recognized, I think that was a distraction. You can talk
about it not being a distraction but I think it was.”
The Tigers regrouped and scored three runs in the second inning knotting
the score at three all. In the fourth inning Katy added two more runs making
the score, Tigers 5-3. The Tigers were beginning to look like the number one
team in the district.
In the fifth inning the Cougars came back and started demonstrating some of
the hitting power that Coach Haack had talked about earlier. Karli Hamilton of
the Cougars hit a towering blast to right field that cleared the fence with room
to spare. Hamilton had a runner on base, and the score was 5-5. The Tigers
added one run making the score 6-5 in a game that far from being over.
The Cougars right fielder Julie Calcagno blasts one out of Tiger Field with
runners on in the seventh inning, add another insurance run, and the Cougars
have a 10-6 lead.
“The girls that hit the home runs hit homeruns on us the last time we played
them,” said Coach Haack. “They hit home runs all four years we played them.
They are good hitters.”
The two home runs would not have
hurt as bad if runners had not been on
base. “A lot of our game strategy was
to keep runners off the bases in front
of them but we didn’t do what we
were supposed to do,” was Haack’s
comment. “They scored the three
runs and kept hitting the ball, had
momentum and who batted last was
going to win.”
Tigers kept battling, putting runners
on bases getting a run back. Infielder,
Nicole Valdez, stepped up to the plate
and after taking a couple of pitches,
connected with a line drive to left
center that had no quit in it, gaining
altitude, clearing the fence. The Tigers
win 12-10 as Tiger players swarm onto
the field and Katy fans roar approval.
Valdez can hit home runs, but not
that many. “They just happen every
once in awhile,” says Valdez. “I don’t
try to hit home runs; I just go for a base

hits at just the right time. “I was just Katy’s Bailee Shashack reaches out making this catch near

really good.”
Haack sums up an exciting night. “The girls never quit. I told them in the
sixth inning when Cinco went up by four or five runs, it’s not a whole lot, but I
do know this if you don’t think you can come back, you won’t. The only chance
you have is think you are going to come back. We have to take advantage of

It’s A Wrap For
Soccer…
Mayde Creek Rams Could Surprise Teams In Playoffs
By Tom Behrens
Mayde Creek Rams end their softball season with an 11-5-0 District
record. Last year the Rams finished district at 3-9. They don’t have a bunch
of new players; many are the same teammates from last year. What has been
happening this year?
Head coach, Jill Voss said she had high expectations for the team at the
beginning of the season. This is Voss’s second year as the head coach of the
girls’ softball at Mayde Creek. “Last year we were 3-9 in district, and only
lost one starter from last year. We have made great improvement, have great
leadership, with some of my young kids and some of my seniors.
“Probably the biggest thing is just mental preparation, teaching them how
to win when it’s not something they understood here,” continued Voss.
“We ended our fall offseason with a program called “Nine Days of
Champions”. It’s an acronym. Every letter in champions stands for
something; C is character, H is heart, A is adversity …and so forth.
“Being a classroom teacher, I pulled the players in and we had a class
on each one of the letters. We ended our Nine Days of Champions a week
before the season started. Voss also explained that a workout was part of
every letter which each individual had to complete in a certain time. If they
couldn’t do it, it became part of their next day. Walking away from it was
not an option.
Katy and Cinco Ranch
will take to the field again on
May 2 against their different
playoff opponents. Good luck
to both teams, and also Mayde
Creek and Seven Lakes.
Kriesel also knows how to
handle a bat. She leads Mayde
Creek in hitting. In District
she is 1st in Runs Batted In
- 27; 2nd in Home Runs - 3;
3rd in Batting Average - .361;
3rd in Slugging Average .638; and 3rd in On Base
Percentage - .448.
Other notable Ram players:
Aryn Benge – “a very athletic
kid. I have to teach her the
game a little bit, but she
will go all out for me, and
freshman, Morgan Anderson,
very versatile, great speed.”
At press time, Mayde
Creek was in second place
and Seven Lakes in third
place in the District. “I have
a bye on Friday, and Seven
Lakes has a game. In a worstcase-scenario we will end up
in third place. Depending on
what position our team ends
up in, we will be playing
either Lamar or Westside.”
It doesn’t matter who the
Rams draw because as Coach
Voss says, “We are real big in
playing 7 innings and playing
every out.”
Cinco Ranch Girls Lose To
Highland Park In Semifinal
Game, 4-3
By Tom Behrens
“There were some workouts that took them 5-6 days to complete,” said
Voss. “A lot of it was them believing in themselves. For instance, they had
to run a mile in 10 minutes. There were kids who ran it in 16 minutes on day
one. They also had to swim so many laps in a certain amount of time. It took
them a while to complete it. When the day came and they did complete it, it
was like ‘Hey, we can do it.’ They soaked it up like a sponge. We still do a
classroom lesson the day of every game.”
Another new item for Ram softball was speed and agility drills. “Last
summer was the first summer for girls' softball to be involved in the Speed
and Agility Camp on campus. I had to get them to buy into it. That’s when
they coined their motto, “Working Today for May”, to still be playing in
May for the playoffs.”
The Rams have had a standout year by many of their players. One of
them, pitcher, Ashley Kriesel, a junior, is the best pitcher in District 19-6A.
Kriesel’s pitching stats in District 19-6A: 1st in Wins -16; 1st in Earned Run
Average - 1.84; and 1st in Batters Struck Out - 257. She is number one in
the State of Texas in 6A for strike-outs.
Voss’s statement that she has an above average pitcher is an understatement
of fact. “If we have any play (offense and defense) behind her, we are tough
to beat.”
“We had four or five first half
shots and missed them all…but
in the end it was a great fight.
You have to be proud of them.”
said Coach Mason Whitfield,
Cinco Ranch boys.
The Cinco Ranch girls ended
its season at 24-2, completing a
year in which the Cougars won
18 straight games at one point
and didn’t surrender a goal in
the playoffs until the shootout
with Highland Park. Coach
Fredy Sanguinetti, Cinco
Ranch girls commented,“You
always want to win. They
(Highland Park) were a very
good squad. We were ready to
play them.”

BRAKING NEWS
Yes it's news about brakes. We now have a top-of-the-line brake lathe fully capable of machining drums and rotors for
18-wheelers. Why is this important for passenger cars and trucks? Because of its huge mass, the machine is completely stable
which means no vibrations therefore resulting in a machined surface that is almost perfectly smooth. This in turn means less
squeal from the brake pads/shoes and also less wear on the friction material. You can bet not too many shops in Katy have this
kind of machine. You may want to ask your mechanic to bring your drums and rotors to us for machining? Just a thought.
