Members having any suggestions, questions, or problems are invited to call us. However, members' phone numbers and addresses are for the sole use of the membership of the Fagowee Ski Club. No one may use this information provided in the directory for business use of any kind. Unauthorized use of our directory can result in disciplinary or legal action. Read more about our constitution, by-laws, and code of conduct at www.fagowees.org. Congratulations to the Fagowee(s) of the Month…. Our May Fagowee of the month has been a member for several years now. Attends meetings on a regular basis, always willing to lend you a helping hand if you need one. He can be found on the ski slope with the Fagowee’s, helping out at meetings, or where ever he may be needed. He always seems to have a smile on his face, and he’s good for a laugh, though serious if the occasion calls for it. He became a board member last year when an important position opened up. He ran for that position again for this year, and he is doing all he can to make it a successful social season for the club. He is trying to have as much fun stuff for us to do this year as he can. He is doing a great job of it too. When you see him at a meeting or event stop by and say hello and thank him for doing a great job planning a fun summer season for the Fagowee’s this year. Congratulations to our May 2013 Fagowee of the Month, Mark P. Way to go Mark! (for a current picture of Mark, please check the lobby of your local Post Office) Check This Out! Your help is needed in controlling entrance and exit via the back door in the bar. As you know, there is a charge for entering the meeting. Many of you think that this goes to cover the cost of beer and munchies. Some of it does, but most of it goes to cover the cost of the hall rental for that evening. We need to cover that cost as well as the beer cost. People who enter via the back door can forget to pay for that evening. In the future, the will be no access through that door. If you need to smoke, please use the front exit for the hall. Cost Increase The Executive Board has voted to raise the cost of attending a regular meeting to $6.00 for members (up from $5.00) and to $8.00 for guests (up from $6.00). This increase will be effective on November 1, 2013. This increase was necessary to cover the meeting costs. Like many other large and successful print publications, the Happening will be joining the 21st century. After October 1, 2013, the Happening will be published and available only on the web in electronic format. The October Happening, which is printed in September, will be the last printed copy you will receive through the mail. If you have any questions or comments about this change, please see any club officer. Or, email us at [email protected]. The club is taking this step for three very significant reasons: Cost. We will save the club over $6,000 annually in printing and mailing costs. We will also become a greener organization by saving the environmental costs associated with producing and disposing of approximately 48,000 sheets of paper annually. Timeliness. You will be able to access the most current issue of the Happening between the 15th and 20th of the preceding month. We will be able to shave 10 to 15 days off production, printing, and mailing times. Quality. Electronic format has several advantages over print. We can now incorporate color in our production. Pictures will be more viewable and text can be enhanced by different colors. We will also have the ability to add or subtract pages without restriction. Current print technology requires that we add or delete pages in increments of four. Sometimes we end up having to shrink ads and stories to fit them in. No longer! Don’t forget the new policy on using the back door in the bar at meetings – DON’T! All entry and exits, including accessing the “smokers lounge” should be through the front door. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Lastly, effective November 1, we will increase the meeting costs to $6.00 for members and $8.00 for Guests. 6th Annual Carl Rutledge Float Trip Watermelon Park • Berryville, VA • watermelonpark.com/ June 21-23 Brought to you by the Washington DC, Fagowees! BYOB - Bring Your Own Bike! Lake Tahoe in review: Fagowees Vs. The Rockies It started with a vision, and a thought, and then a plan, and then it was presented to the board as the spring trip out west. Lake Tahoe, delivered all her glory!...Southwest out of Akron was easy and not complicated, group check in allowed us to have A boarding, and 2 bags fly for free, sweet! A nice size bus picked us up at the airport and with a few English issues with the driver, we convinced him to allow us to change the music on the bus. Thanks to Josh for the music from his phone. I know you just met us, and now we wanted to use your phone?? I promised we would give it back ☺. Quick liquor stop at a local supermarket, and we were on our way to South Lake Tahoe, just over an hour away. The drive there is worth it in itself. Along the winding roads, and tree lined streets, and then the lake unveils its self to you. Our bus finds its way after we tell him where the condo was. I guess they forgot to tell him where we are staying. After unpacking we had a nice welcome wine and cheese party where we got information about the area and lift tickets for 4 of the 5 days. 1st day of skiing was Sunday, and St. Patrick’s Day. Everyone wore their green. Calvin S, was the best dressed, with his green hair, he was even interviewed for the local paper! Lunch on the slopes of Heavenly was enjoyed by all. We stopped in at a local micro brewery, called “The Brewery”. Debbie the Manager is from OHIO! Others made their way to different places for green beer. They don’t party like Cleveland on St. Pats in Tahoe, but we do! Monday was an 8 am bus trip to Kirkwood, it was a nice ride through the mountains, it was frozen corduroy in the morning and by 11 it was smooth as silk. Brian W was shown up by Arlene S as she was the last person off the hill, she is our new admired person, even if she comes from the NASA Club. She has been skiing for over 40 years, now in her mid 80’s she was at the bus stop first each and every morning and the last one off the hill each and every day. Happy Hour on the hill was convient right next to the bus pick up and they even had nice wagons to cart your stuff to the bus. Prime Rib Dinner was planned that night at a local casino. After a great meal, Bob M took charge at the craps table and taught the group how to play. I got special permission to take the picture at the casino as almost the entire table was from our group and they were WINNING! Tuesday was a bus trip to Northstar. It was a nice place to ski, and also more soft silky snow was to be found. I almost took a ride down the hill backwards while I tried to sit on a bench on the hill; I soon found out it was not anchored down! Donna B found a nice black diamond run to play on and there was only us on the hill. Hot tub stories were plentiful that evening. Everyone found great places to eat and easy to get to as Lakeland Village had 4 shuttles at our calling. Wednesday was an unplanned day, everyone did whatever they wanted. It was raining most of the day so it was a great look around shopping day. Some went to Carson City to check out how the west use to look. Bob M went to Virginia City and got his picture taken in jail! Some of us met up for happy hour at the casino with two other Ohio clubs. Dayton Ski club was traveling with the Kitty Hawk Ski Club, both from the Dayton Ohio area. We networked and chatted about skiing and our clubs. They are interested in joining us at Seven Springs next year. Thursday was our bus trip to Squaw. Along the lake were breathtaking views of Emerald Bay on one side and the mountains on the other. We were greeted by fresh snow on top and the National Ski Races were going on. Wow up close pro races, hummm where is “Valcher Ridge”? Just a short hike up or as Wendy W found out it’s straight through the race course to the other side. These guys were traveling 60 miles an hour, they were 16-22 years old WOW! You can always tell the newbie’s on a ski trip. They are the ones who ski through the frozen outfall from the mornings Avalanche Patrols and are over heard saying “WTF was that”! I guess John and Josh didn’t hear me say stay away from those areas. Even a few veterans found it, right Tara? Hot tub happy hour was enjoyed by all. More food, fun, and friends continued through the night. Friday was our final ski day, it was a little warmer than the previous day. Everyone enjoyed a morning of skiing and lunch on the hills at the outside grill under the blue sky. Some had runs that litterly “ran out of snow” and they (Continued on next pages) had to stop and hike to continue their run, ok… which one of you were in front? Brian W or Mike P. John F soon found out skiing with this group is always an adventure, and if that wasn’t enough, they ended the day on an unforgiving run called “Gunbarrel”. It’s a steep bump run or you can take the trail that snakes around in hair pin turns. It’s known for its breathtaking views and cliffs edges and skinny trails, no room for error on this one. Gunbarrel has a lift that allows you to ride it back down so you can take in the view of the Lake. If that is not for you, then you have the tram back down. Our evening ended with a nice buffet dinner across the street at Tep’s Villa Roma, we gave thanks to our founder Dutch Mueller, who passed away and Tahoe, was his favorite place to ski. It was then time to pack to leave in the morning. Surprising the bus found us in the morning. You know with me that was going to happen (I called to make sure). It was just a little wait for our flight. We were just a head of the storm in Denver so we were lucky until we got to Chicago. We got delayed a few hours because of an East Coast issue and got back to Akron late. We all had a great week, full of food, fun and friends. Thank you to all who went. Sharon The Thursday Golf Schedule for May 5/16 Washington Park (with the driving range and short-game practice area for those who get there early 5/23 Big Met 5/29 Highland Park (note Wednesday date to avoid conflict with 5/30 Happy Hour) 6:00 PM start time.
