Reception held for student artists at Iowa Lakes’ Art Show
By Summer James
ALL CAMPUS-The Iowa Lakes’
student Art Show is being held at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji,
Iowa, from April 10 through May 5.
Various artists from Iowa Lakes
Community
College
have
an
opportunity to display their talents.
This is an excellent opportunity for the
public to view talented works the Iowa
Lakes Community College students
had on display.
There was a vast array of art
displayed throughout Pearson Lakes
Art Center. Jill Clark displayed her
batix piece referred to as “The
Peacock.”
“I love the colors and the elegance
that peacocks possess,” said Clark.
This was her second showing of her
art, at the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
“I Love the Iowa Lakes’ exhibit,
because it brings the ILCC community
together, and I love the space at
Pearson Art Center,” said Clark.
Mike Watt is a Graphic Design
student who started in January. This
was his first show to display his talents.
“The first show is nerve racking and
not knowing what people are thinking.
Because there are a million different
perspectives,” said Watt.
He explained that being a Graphic
Design student, “gives me the
opportunity to draw and do graphic
imagery, get paid for it and not get
yelled at,” said Watt.
In addition to the impressive
artwork, Precious Loma and Jay
Lundquist from the Hotel Restaurant
Management Program prepared a
variety of deserts for the reception
held on April 12 from 5-7 p.m.
Ribbon cutting participants included, from left: Vet Tech Student Brittany Watkins with Boxer Porscha, Annette Lindquist,
Trustee Arden Kinnander, Tom Brotherton, Trustee Bob Jennings, President Valerie Newhouse, Trustee Jan Lund, Vet
Tech Student Abbie Bradley, Trustee Pat Kibbie, Dan Cooper, Trustee David Gottsche, Trustee Jane Nolan Goeken, Dr.
David Rentschler, Vet Tech Student Keely Williamson with Irish Setter Chloe.

EMMETSBURG-On Friday, April 20,
2012, the Iowa Lakes Community
College new Veterinary Technician
Program facility was open to the
public during its ribbon cutting. Visitors
could explore the new building, have
refreshments and even get a first hand
look at all of the new technology that
was brought in to help the students
learn. Several students enrolled in the
program also gave tours around the
facility explaining as they went.
The building had formerly been
known as the horticulture building, but
was chosen as the foundation for the
Veterinary Technology Program.
During
her
speech,
Valerie
Newhouse, President of Iowa Lakes
Community College, acknowledged
some of the services that helped
immensely in making this dream
for Iowa Lakes a reality. She noted
businesses such as Dan Cooper
Construction, KW Electric, Midwest
Mechanical and Copper Cottage.
Newhouse also acknowledged the
staff at Iowa Lakes along with the
two new instructors for the Veterinary
Technician Program, Dr. David
Rentschler and Annette Lindquist.
Several others also spoke including a
student enrolled in the program as well
as Rentschler and Lindquist.
The Vice President of the Board
of Trustees and area farmer, Pat
Kibbie, spoke of his passion for
the program from his history with
agriculture and animals. He thanked
area veterinarians who helped make
the courses exceptional for students.
Students began taking classes for
the Veterinary Technician Program in
the fall of 2011 on campus facilities.
The new building is equipped with
a large laboratory area, a clinical
pathology lab, two offices, a surgery
room, a pharmacy, a full X-ray space
with dark room and prep sinks. There
is also a climate-controlled kennel
that can accommodate 12 dogs and
includes a fenced-in ‘play area’ for
the dogs. There are also cats, a few
rodents and a chinchilla. Students

Iowa Lakes helps Creston community begin to heal
By Joshua Olson
Iowa Lakes Community College and
the town’s residents will never forget
their effort and the dedication they’ve
put into restoring the community. It will
be a memory they will keep with them
for a lifetime.
The staff of SouthWest Community
College is thankful for what Iowa
Lakes has done for the community of
Creston. Classes were cancelled for
Monday and Tuesday. The college
reopened and resumed classes on
Wednesday, April 18.
ESTHERVILLE-During the evening of Saturday, April 14, a tornado struck the
town of Creston, Iowa. Some houses were damaged, along with the hospital,
a nursing home, the elementary and high school, SouthWestern Community
College and some college dorms. Some residents of Creston were injured
from the disaster. One person was hospitalized in critical condition. Residents
stayed in churches, community shelters or with close family members. College
students who were not allowed back into their dorms were forced to move into
hotels. Some students slept on cots (donated by the American Red Cross) at
SouthWestern Community College. The Salvation Army was also present at
SouthWestern to help the students in need.
On Sunday night, Laker Life Club Advisor, Brett Fuelberth was texting and
calling students about volunteering to clean up the town. He went onto Laker
Life’s Facebook page to post an announcement to students, mentioning days
they would be in Creston. Seventeen students from Iowa Lakes packed duffle
bags, pillows, toiletry items, and clothes. They left on Monday at 12:00 a.m., with
three advisors, Brett Fuelberth, Carol Ayres and Bill Lapczenski, and returned
Tuesday at approximately 7:00 p.m.
As the college students approached the town, they drove to a worksite

where they stayed. The group had a “breakfast” dinner after a hard night’s work.
Brett Fuelberth was appreciative that the church opened its doors and invited
Iowa Lakes’ students and staff to stay the night. “It was great for the students to
see how caring the church was and how it served us and the community. They
let us stay there, drove us to their homes for showers and made us a fabulous
breakfast,” Fuelberth said.

the damage caused by the tornado.
Everyone noticed a house ripped
to shreds and the concrete flooring

flight of stairs remained untouched. A
college student mentioned seeing a

students also helped clean an area

By Bethany Dieter
ESTHERVILLE-Friday,
April
13, 2012, and Friday, April 20,
2012, were marked as Spring
Campus Visit Days at Iowa Lakes
Community
College.
Anyone
interested in attending Iowa Lakes
for classes in the future could
attend. The visitation times were
from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit days
are a time for prospective students
to get a hands-on look at any
program they might be interested in
and could also meet their advisor.
The day’s activities included
advisor presentations from the
student’s program of interest; a
campus tour, including housing; a
question and answer session for
both parents and students and
the opportunity to have a free
lunch with faculty members and
coaches. This gave the students
the chance to ask questions and
find out more about their program.
Parents were also encouraged
to attend to get a feel for the college
and they were given the chance
to ask financial aid or admission
questions. Also several activities
took place in the afternoon from
1-4 p.m. Students were given the
opportunity to take the COMPASS
or ASSET placement tests and
could even audition for band or choir.
Graphic
Design
Instructor
Debbie Wilson discussed class
requirements and expectations
for her program with her group
of prospects. She gave basic
information of what the student
can expect in the program
and discussed her personal
requirements for success. She
even shared a design handbook for
the students to better understand
what graphic designers do.

Karl Swanson and Chanin Sriintravanit assemble their small wind turbine.
By Bethany Dieter
ESTHERVILLE-Iowa Lakes Wind
Energy and Turbine Technology
students Karl Swanson, Chanin
Sriintravanit and Bubacar Sow
decided to create a few side projects using some of the tools they
have learned in their program. The
trio built their own mini turbine, a
solar panel and their own meteorological tower. The group worked
on these projects on weekends for
a couple of months and are very
happy with their accomplishments.
The small wind turbine was
originally inspired by a design from
the Internet. The group worked
together to incorporate their
own original touch. The turbine
is used to charge a 10-volt battery to produce one amp. which
can be taken out and used in a
radio or household lights. The solar panel also charges a battery
that can be used indoors, as well.
The
meteorological
tower
measures wind speed, direction
and temperature. The meteorological tower then channels the
information collected to a handheld weather tablet. The information collected can be downloaded
and made into graphs on Excel.
Swanson said, “It was a lot
of trial and error to find what
worked best for us. But all of
our projects came out great!”
Swanson, Sow, and Sriintravanit are second year students
at Iowa Lakes. Sriintravanit has
attended school for engineering
in the past and is from Thailand.
He has completed an internship
on small turbines so he knew
quite a bit about the construction. Swanson is from Iowa City,
Iowa, and Sow is from New York
City. Sow has previously studied
to be an anemometry specialist.

The outdoor sport that is

ESTHERVILLE-Students are constantly looking for something to
do, some activity to partake in,
someone to hang out with and so
on. But recently, many Iowa Lakes
Community College students can
be found
at the Disc
golf course
in
Estherville,
Iowa. This
course
is free to
play and
has about

D i s c
golf origin a t e d
in
the
1970’s. It
is a game
a lot like
regular
golf but the
player is
using Frisbee discs
instead. The player starts from
the tee area then throws to make
it into the hole. The hole in disc
golf is usually an elevated metal
basket. The thrower tries to make
the disc into the basket from the
tee area in the least amount of
throws possible. There are also
several different kinds of discs
just as there are several clubs
in regular golf. There is no age
limit or restrictions for players.
The question on some people’s minds is why do they play?
Ben Hoolihan, an Iowa Lakes
Community College Wind Energy and Turbine Technology student says, “I like to play because
it’s free and fun. I used to play
regular golf, but I like Disc more.
I like to practice to play in tournaments.” Hoolihan has been playing disc golf for over ten years and
has no plan of stopping. He has
competed in tournaments to win
money for Disc golf merchandise.
He managed to get second place
in a group of about thirty people.
Andrew Willette, also an Iowa
Lakes Community College Wind
Energy and Turbine Technology
student and avid Disc golf player,
said, “I just love being active out-
doors. You kind of feel like you’re
free. But the better you get, the
more enjoyable the game is!”

Sexual Assault - unreported violent crime in
America
Binge drinking in a college
environment can be a sign of serious
mood or emotional issues surfacing
through alcohol. According to a study,
nearly one third of people with major
depression also have a problem
with alcohol; the depression usually
preceding the problem with alcohol.
Many students believe that drinking is
harmless, ignoring the fact that it often
leads to exasperating mood disorders
and increasing risky behavior that is
often regretted.
No matter what time of year, Iowa
Lakes Community College offers
students an anonymous alcohol selfassessment online. This survey can
provide students with important insight
into their own drinking habits and
behaviors, as well as offer options for
treatment or referral information.
“Many students don’t associate
their drinking and stress with a mood
disorder,” says a health professional.
“Often, they feel like drinking is a
normal and acceptable way to fight
stress, especially during their college
years. However, in reality, alcohol
can make mood disorder symptoms
worse. The alcohol self-assessment
can help students take a step toward
healthier and happier living.”
Some samples taken from the
assessment
include
questions
like, “Have people annoyed you by
criticizing your drinking?” and “Have
you ever felt bad or guilty about your
drinking?”
The online assessment can be taken

ALL CAMPUSES-Sexual assault is
widely considered to be an unreported
violent crime in America. Most sexual
assaults on college campuses are
committed by an acquaintance of
the victim. “The effects of sexual
abuse are life long and devastating,
it happens everywhere.” said Iowa
Lakes Community College Counselor
Joey Gude.
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of
Campus Security and Campus Crime
Statistics Act is the landmark Federal
law, originally known as the Campus
Security Act. This requires colleges
and universities across the United
States to disclose information about
crime on their campuses.
Because the law is tied to
participation in the federal student
aid programs, it applies to most
institutions of higher education, both
public and private. It is enforced by
the U.S. Department of Education.
The law was amended in 1992 and
subsequent amendments were made
in 2000 and 2008. This additionally
added provisions dealing with
registered sex offender notifications
and campus emergency response.
The 2008 amendments also added
a provision to protect crime victims,
“whistleblowers” and other forms of
retaliation.
Clery Act Compliance information
will be incorporated in the handbook
developed by the U.S. Department
of Education to present step-by-step
procedures, examples and references
for higher education institutions to
follow in meeting campus safety
and security requirements of the
Higher Education Act of 1965 as
amended. This handbook replaces

The event deals with everything

a time when lovers of these things

one another’s company. This was my

Asmus is college supervisor
on Spirit Lake campus
Heather Asmus
By Summer James
ALL CAMPUS-Welcome Heather Asmus.
Asmus is the new Iowa Lakes Community College Supervisor and Advisor,
serving the Spirit Lake campus. She originally worked in the Admissions Office
on the Emmetsburg campus 2010 through 2012.
Asmus has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s degree in PostSecondary Education Student Affairs. Both degrees were obtained through the
University of Northern Iowa.
Asmus would like to encourage all students to stop into her office to talk about
educational goals and summer registration. She also encourages feedback. “I
hope to bring new ideas to the campus and increase enrollment and retention.
I would also like to make the campus energetic and bring out the pride of Iowa
Lakes Community College,” said Asmus.
In her free time she enjoys baking, reading, movies, and spending time with
friends and family.
Stokes, Grandstaff
receive recognition
Two Iowa Lakes Community
College administrators, Scott Stokes
and Barb Grandstaff, were nominated
for and received an Iowa Community
College Online Consortium (ICCOC)
STARS Award. This award recognizes
those who are Striving To Achieve
Retention and Success for students
enrolled in online courses through the
ICCOC.
Barb Grandstaff, Registrar, and
Scott Stokes, Estherville campus
Executive Dean, were presented
the award at the ICCOC Spring
Conference.
College employees are nominated
based on their efforts to provide
excellence in service for specific
projects and activities that promote
the retention and success of online
students at their colleges.
“Scott and Barb’s commitment
to student success made them an
obvious pair to be nominated for the

award,” commented Julie Williams,
Dean of Students. “I nominated them
because of their innovative approach
to assuring timely and accurate
academic advising for online students.”
Stokes and Grandstaff’s advising
model included creating a volunteer
team of Iowa Lakes employees to
provide academic advising for students
taking all online courses.
“Iowa Lakes is fortunate to have
volunteers including faculty and
student services personnel who want
to be a part of the online advising
initiative,” said Stokes.
“The project would not be successful
without dedicated staff willing to be
advisors for online students,” added
Grandstaff.
Landscape and Turfgrass students
receive scholarships
EMMETSBURG-Two Iowa Lakes
Community College Landscape and
Turfgrass students have received
scholarships from the Siouxland Golf
Course Superintendents Association
(SGCSA).
Jacob Kopaska, Coon Rapids, and
Travis Goeders, Mallard, were awarded
scholarships for the spring semester. The scholarships were in recognition
of their achievements in their studies
at the college and their future careers
in the golf course industry. Both also
completed internships at golf courses
in northwest Iowa. Kopaska did two internships at
the Coon Rapids Golf Course. He
will complete a third internship this
spring as the greens keeper at Little
Sioux Golf and Country Club in Sioux
Rapids. Goeders worked his fall internship
at Five Island Golf Course in
Emmetsburg and will be returning
there this spring. Some of their duties have included
mowing fairways, greens, tees, rough
and repairing the irrigation system
along with some fertilizing. “I feel honored to receive this
scholarship,” said Kopaska. Goeders
agreed.
“It
helps
tremendously in paying for college,”
said Goeders.
The Landscape and Turfgrass
Technology program is a two-year
Associate in Applied Science program. Students receive three, on-the-job
training experiences at a business of
their choice.

Strong pitching keeps Lakers in games
By Ashleigh Dykes
ESTHERVILLE-Spring is here and golf is too! Golf season for the Iowa Lakes
Lakers has officially begun.
The Iowa Lakes Golf program has been a success over the years. The
men have consistently been ranked in the top 18 the last five years, and have
finished 2nd overall in the Region XI Tournament in six of the last seven years.
The women have also been ranked in the top 18 over the last five years and
they were also the Region XI champions in 2009.
The roster for this year’s men’s team consists of: freshmen, Ty Asa, Synjin
Hangen, Ben McCain and Benjamin Nath. The sophomores on the team
include: Josh Ellanson, Matt Kosbab, Ryan Stevens, Marc Vorwald and Zach
Woldruff.
The women’s roster consists of: freshmen, Sam Mueller and Taylor Heinrichs
and sophomores Taylor Ask and Karlee Schneekloth.
The Lakers participated in their first tournament of the season on April
5th at the DMACC Spring Invitational. Being their first meet, the Lakers were
just getting their legs under them and Head Coach Andy Soper thought they
performed well in their first outing.
“I feel that overall it was a good day for our first tournament of the season.
The greens gave us a little trouble; they were rolling very well and fast for this
early in the season,” said Soper.
As a team, the men finished in 4th place shooting a final score of 303.
DMACC was the winning team with a final score of Even par 288. Nath led the
way scoring 73, which put him in a tie for 7th place.
For the women, the Lakers competed with three individuals. Meuller placed
11th shooting 88, Schneekloth tied for 19th shooting 97, and Heinrichs shot a
118.
Edwin Dominguez (#26) looks up to catch a pop fly during the Lakers’ home
game against Century on March 29.

ESTHERVILLE-As the Iowa Lakes Softball team nears the bottom of conference
play, preparation for the regional tournament is now approaching.
After picking up five quick wins in the start of conference play, the Lakers
have been struggling as of late. Team chemistry and maturity have been areas
of concern, according to Head Coach Jessica VanLoy.
“We just really need to grow up...with better decisions both on and off the
field. But our team chemistry is starting to build as the season goes on, and
we have made a lot of forward progress after suffering some hard losses,” said
VanLoy.
Leadership within a team usually comes into question when maturity is an
issue. However, VanLoy doesn’t just see one person as the one to step up and
lead.
“Softball is a team sport and everyone needs to lead when the opportunity is
there. Everyone is a leader when they need to be,” said VanLoy.
Aside from those minor issues, VanLoy feels her team is ready for the
regional tournament as the end of conference play approaches. Currently
sitting at 7th in the conference, she feels her team has a good chance with that
spot.
“Seventh is a very good spot for us…we would be playing the #2 seed,
Kirkwood, who we already beat once this year,” added VanLoy.

ESTHERVILLE-As the 2011- 2012 baseball season continues to roll through,
the Iowa Lakes Men’s Baseball team looks to turn it around as they near the
bottom of conference play.
Currently sitting at the bottom of the ICCAC conference, the Lakers struggled
at the start, but have managed to turn things around and pick up wins this month.
Consistency and injuries were a couple of the issues holding the Lakers back
at the start of conference.
“Consistency was an issue; we were struggling to hit the ball and errors
fielding wise were holding us back,” said Graduate Assistant Craig Fandel.
“We’ve also had a few injuries that caused some guys to have to play out of
position,” added Fandel.
The Lakers have picked up their play lately and the team’s consistent
pitching has been key.
Sophomore Pitcher Gunner Johnson, who the coaching staff considers one
of the leaders on the team, has been big for the Lakers this year in their recent
successes.
Johnson isn’t the only one having success at the mound. Other key pitchers
for the Lakers include: freshman Alcides Fuguet, sophomore Anthony Stewart
and freshman Christian Torrech.
“Our pitchers have played huge roles and have put us in good positions to
win games,” said Fandel.
