ESTHERVILLE-How many students
imagined traveling to foreign lands,
seeing amazing sights and trying new
adventures over spring break? Well,
for a few philosophy students, this was
exactly what their spring break 2013
consisted of.
With Dr. Glenn Rogers and his wife,
Glenda, as chaperones, the students
embarked on a ten-day adventure,
traveling to London, Paris, Florence,
and Rome.
Dr. Rogers is the professor of
humanities and social sciences at
Iowa Lakes while Glenda Rogers is a
success center instructor.
The trip was originally scheduled
to visit Italy and Greece. Dr. Rogers
explained, “The tour we were going
with was cancelled because our group
wasn’t large enough to go to Athens.
So they added London and Paris to
their itinerary.” He added, “The trip was
very busy. We still had only ten days
and added two cities to our plans.”
Makaila Johnson, a member of
the philosophy club, said, “I was
disappointed that our plans got
changed. I really did enjoy London and
Paris and was glad I was able to see
them. I would have rather spent time in
Greece and more time in Italy, though.”
Next spring she plans to study in Italy,
“Because I love it so much,” she said.
In London, the group was able to
spend the day and explore for a few
hours.
According to Glenda Rogers, “This
was my first time in London. It was a
lot of fun and I would love to go back
there. Dr. Rogers and I have traveled
together and it is different and a lot
of fun to travel with groups of young
people.”
Dr. Rogers said, while in Paris,
some people decided to visit the
Versailles Palace, while others chose
to go off and explore the city. Everyone
was dropped off at the Eiffel Tower and
was scheduled to meet at the opera
house in the middle of Paris later in the
day. The ladies who went to explore
the city found their way several miles
across Paris to the opera house. Dr.
Rogers and his group arrived at the
opera house 30 minutes early. While
waiting for the ladies to return he said,
“I was afraid we might have to go find
them.” Instead they walked up right on
time. He said, “I was very proud of the

ladies, I am pretty sure they were out
of their comfort zone.”
Johnson said her most memorable
moment on the trip was when
everyone had free time in Italy. One
time, while having a slice of pizza in
a plaza in Florence, someone played
an accordion in the background. She
said, “It was just like a scene from a
movie. Especially since the weather
was so nice.”
Glenda Rogers said her favorite
activity while traveling was, “The boat
trip down the Seine. It was late in the
day and we got to watch the lights
come on. It was beautiful.” She also
said, “The most memorable moment of
the trip was walking into Notre Dame.
It is so large and awe inspiring. I even
bought some chestnuts from a street
vendor, like I used to do. They were
delicious!”
She was pleased to say she brought
home a small plate from Windsor
Castle and another from Versailles.
“We also bought several paperback
tourist books, so we could remember
some of the places we were seeing,”
she said.
Johnson spoke of the good
memories she brought home, along
with, photos, key rings and olive oil.
“The coolest thing I brought home,
though, was the pottery I got in Italy,”
she stated.
For anyone interested in attending
next year’s trip, Johnson said, “I would
recommend this trip to everyone!
I learned so much. Every day was
so jam-packed with information and
sight-seeing. I learned a lot about
myself, too, especially that I have
the confidence and motivation to do
anything I set my mind to.”
On next year’s trip to Athens, Dr.
Rogers said the group will first have
four days of guided sight-seeing tours.
Then, they will be embarking on a
four-day cruise on the Aegean Sea.
It is referred to as island hop, Aegean
style. The fourday cruise will
take the tourists
to six of the most
beautiful islands
in the world.
Dr.
Rogers
added, “I would
love to have our
faculty and staff
go on these trips,
as well as more
students.”

Sherdan, father; high school assistant coach, Phil Schroeder; high school head
coach, Terry Heiderscheit and Beth Sherdan, mother.
ESTHERVILLE-Head coach Nicole
Bullock is proud to announce the
signing of Alissa Johnson and Allyson
Sherdan to the women’s basketball
program.
Johnson, a five-foot-seven-inch
guard from South Division High School
in Milwaukee, Wis., earned a number
of awards during her high school
career.
She was selected First Team AllConference and named team MVP all
four years.
She was also a two-time player
of the year in the conference and
Honorable All-State as a sophomore.
Johnson was also named the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Player of
The Week three times and earned AllArea Honorable Mention honors.
Johnson averaged 19.1 points, ten
assists and seven rebounds per game.
With those numbers, she became her
high school’s all-time leading scorer,
beating Terry Porter by 11 points.
She has over 1,000 career points
and 700 career assists.
“The addition of Alissa to our team
is very exciting. She brings quickness,
leadership
and
an
aggressive
defensive presence,” Bullock said.
“We are extremely happy to have her
join our program.”
Johnson also competed in tennis
and softball during her time at SDHS.
She was selected First Team AllConference in tennis.
She is planning to major in criminal
justice.
The other signee for the Lakers was
a six-foot forward from John Marshall
High School in Rochester, Minn.
Sherdan played a major role in
her team’s 9-9 conference record on
the year, averaging nine points, nine
boards, six assists and two steals on
the season.
In her sophomore year, she
averaged six points, eight rebounds,
three assists and two steals.
As a junior, she added seven
points, pulled down seven boards,
dished out four assists and two steals
on the season.
She was a three-year starter for the
Rockets.
“We are delighted to have Allyson
become a member of the team,”
commented Bullock. “Her ability to
play both on the perimeter and in the
paint gives us instant flexibility. She
also brings a high basketball IQ and a
level of toughness to our team.”
Sherdan was also a section
medalist in track as a sophomore and
junior, running the 100, 200, 4x100
and 4x200.
She is planning to major in athletic
training.
David Peterson’s “Memoirs Of A Recovering Teacher” is set to realeae on May
1, 2013.
ESTHERVILLE-Former Iowa Lakes
Community College professor, David
Peterson, has written a book entitled,
“Memoirs Of A Recovering Teacher.”
Peterson’s book is based on his
38-year teaching career.
Peterson taught business courses
at the Estherville campus for Iowa
Lakes for 34 years and also taught
four years at a Minnesota high school.
The book contains about 100 stories
about students, teachers and school
administrators that are often revealing,
humorous, absurd or downright crazy.
And, according to Peterson, the stories
are all true. Anyone who has ever
been a student, teacher, administrator,
or school employee anywhere, will find
the book interesting; anyone who has
ever been connected with Iowa Lakes
will find it to be fascinating.
This is Peterson’s 25th published
book.
“Memoirs Of A Recovering Teacher”
was released on May 1, 2013.
Copies are available at the
bookstore
on
Estherville
and
Emmetsburg campuses, as well as

Human services/disability studies
program coordinator Amy VerMulm
By Susan Robinson
ESTHERVILLE-Iowa Lakes Human
Services/Disability Studies program
is offered on the Estherville campus.
A unique feature of this program is its
plethora of career opportunities.
The program coordinator is Amy
VerMulm, who has been at Iowa
Lakes for ten years. She previously
worked at two long-term care facilities
as a social worker before coming to
Iowa Lakes.
“A person that enjoys working
with and helping others would be a
good fit for this career,” said VerMulm.
She went on to say, “Students
need to be open-minded and able
to look at situations objectively and
professionally. Writing and speaking
skills are also important.”
Students are trained to help people
of all ages and with varying disabilities.
The variety of careers offered within
human services has continued to grow
and provide more opportunities for
those in the field.
Students will be prepared for entrylevel employment with public and
private social services or the option of
transferring to a four-year college or
university.
Students will develop skills in
planning,
case
management,
assessment,
interviewing
and
behavioral observations. The program
also helps in areas such as writing,

Human services/disability studies
offers versatility in a degree
professionalism, policy changes and
politics.
During classes, students discuss a
large number of real-life scenarios to
help prepare for future work. Classes
are very interactive and each student
is encouraged to be involved and
share his or her knowledge.
VerMulm said, “When students
leave Iowa Lakes, I want them to
feel prepared and familiar with the
skills and topics they need. Human
services’ workers are often required
to know many topics and have several
types of skills.”
Though the program does not
require taking a foreign language
course, according to VerMulm, “It is
very important and an advantage to
have some working knowledge of a
second language and the culture you
may be working with in the field.”
During their time at Iowa Lakes,
students are required to complete
a six-credit practicum. It includes
480 hours within a human services/
disability agency. If students take
a three-credit course of medical
technology, then they are allowed to
take a shorter, three-credit practicum
of 240 hours.
Practicums should be completed
after at least two semesters of course
work.
“I work with several local agencies
for practicums. Many of the agencies
are on my advisory board,” said
VerMulm.
According to VerMulm, a large
number of the human services/
disability studies students transfer to
a four-year college after finishing at
Iowa Lakes. The field has changed
in the past few years and a lot of
positions are requiring a four-year
degree. Having an advanced degree
will allow individuals to have more
opportunities and choices within this
field.
The need for qualified human
services workers is anticipated to grow
at a rate much faster than average
over the next few years, according to
the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There are a variety of positions to be
filled in Iowa.
Trustees move
ahead with facilities
EMMETSBURG-The Iowa Lakes
Board of Trustees gathered on the
Emmetsburg campus on April 16 and
voted to proceed with the remodeling
of the sustainable energy resource
technology building on the Estherville
campus.
The vision is to take the former
Medieval Glass facility on seventh
avenue south and convert it into a
facility to house the proposed heating,
ventilation and air conditioning
program, the new water quality
program and the industry training. In addition, the building would be
upgraded to include a lab for potential
robotics classes and space for Stech
and NC3 training for both students
and industry partners.
As growth continues, approximately
13,500 square feet could be added to
the structure.
Delaine Hiney, executive director
of facilities management, reported
that Christensen Construction of
Estherville submitted the low base
bid. The trustees accepted the bid
following a public hearing.
The swine facility at the college
farm laboratory had its first change
order approved. Three windows were
added, walls are being added to make
a hallway and an additional feed bin
was purchased. This month’s Iowa Lakes Report
featured the wind energy and turbine
technology program. Scott Stokes, executive dean
of the Estherville campus, pointed
out that graduates help fill positions
throughout the United States, as well
as regionally, and support the growth
of the wind industry.
Dan Lutat, the director of the wind
energy program, gave an overview
of upcoming events involving Iowa
Lakes and its students. He also
addressed the planned improvements
for the SERT building and answered
questions.
“The opportunities in this industry
are global,” Lutat said.
This year the American Wind Energy
Association National Conference will
be held in Chicago and Iowa Lakes
will staff a booth. Shortly after that
conference, the college will host a
wind tech event in cooperation with

Problems are oportunites for business administration and management students
By Megan Dvorak
ALL CAMPUSES-The business
administration and management
program at Iowa Lakes, which is
available on all five campuses, offers
a broad scope of career opportunities.
The program offers several face-toface or online options for traditional,
non-traditional, full and part-time
students. The program teaches
necessary skills and fundamentals
that the students will need in order to
manage a business.
Denise
Reimer,
program
coordinator, pointed out that the more
education a student gets, the better off
they will be in the long run.
“It’s the general rule in society. The
more education you get the better off
you will be,” said Reimer.
After finishing their degree, she
encourages students to further their
education by moving on to a four-year
college or university.
Reimer also said students in this
field of study need to have people
skills, creativity, problem-solving skills
and good initiative. She went on to
say for students to be successful in
this program, they need to be able to
see it as an opportunity. Reimer gave
the examples, “If no one had a flat tire,
they wouldn’t need a repair shop. If no
one gets hungry, they wouldn’t need a
restaurant.”
One requirement of the program is
a practicum. A practicum is a tool the
program uses to get students familiar
with what life will be like outside of
school. Students can gain experience
from places such as retail, grocery,
real estate, advertising or marketing.
Reimer said, “Practicums bridge
the classroom to the real world.”
Melissa Pope-Thongvanh, an
Iowa Lakes’ student at the Spencer
campus, is in her second year as
a business administration and
management major. Pope-Thongvanh
said that lecture is the most commonly
used method of teaching. She learns
things such as advertising, business
law, human relations and accounting.
“I chose this major because I want
to open my own business when I finish
school. If I work for someone else,
then I would like to manage a coffee
shop or bakery, because that’s the
type of business I want to open,” said
Pope-Thongvanh
She went on to say, “I would say
the best part of the program is Denise
Reimer, who is my advisor. She has
helped me with my class schedules
and she is a great instructor.”

Iowa Lakes Music Department
tours area high schools
By Megan Dvorak
ESTHERVILLE-On
Monday,
April 15, 2013, the Iowa Lakes
Music Department performed for
the Estherville High School and
Harris-Lake Park High School. The
purpose of this trip was to promote
the music program at Iowa Lakes.
“We like to market our college
and the music department to high
schools. We go to the schools
of students that we have in our
ensembles,” said music professor
Carol Ayres.
The hand bell choir, directed
by Carol Ayres, opened with its
performance of “Gloria Hodie” and
ended with “Calitente”” setting up
the performance for success.
Next up was the men’s choir,
under the direction of Brett
Fuelberth, singing “Down On the
Corner” and “Good Old Acapella.”
Their next song took the
audience back to the simple days
of their childhood with “The Lion
Sleeps Tonight,” from the classic
movie The Lion King.
Leaving the high school students
on that note, the jazz singers
were next. They started off with a
jazzy tune called “Moonglow,” and
ended with the classic patriotic
song, “America the Beautiful.”
To end the performance, the
jazz band captivated the audience
with their musical talents. Setting
a spy-themed mood, the group
played
“Charade,”
featuring
Steve Subbert on trombone.
They ended the performance with
“Espionage,” featuring soloist
Jordan Christiansen, leaving their
audience feeling a little like James
Bond.
A representative from the army spoke with students on the Emmetsburg campus for Career Day that was held on April 16.
A total of 15 schools and 705 students participated in Career Day and they learned about many careers that they were interested in.

Deondre Parks named NJCAA
3rd Team All-American
The
Lakers,
unfortunately,
dropped their next two conference
double-headers against Kirkwood and
Ellsworth.
After the Ellsworth games, head
coach Jessica VanLoy said that her
team needed to limit errors in order to
keep leads.
“We need to get back to the basics
and play Laker softball like we know
how. Our infield is making too many
errors, mentally and physically, which
makes keeping a lead difficult,” she
said.
She went on to add, “We are close
to halfway through our season and
need to start making strides in the
right direction.”
After a number of games were
cancelled due to inclement weather,
the Lakers were back in action on
April 16 against NIACC.
After dropping the first of the
double-header 5-13, Iowa Lakes was
able to pick up its third conference
win, winning 9-8 in the second game.
In the first game the Lakers took
a 5-1 lead, but NIACC was able to
score seven runs in the inning and
eventually go on to take the win.
“During that inning, there was a
questionable call at second base, that
we let dictate how the rest of the game
went,” said VanLoy.
“We are very young, but need to
be stronger mentally to push through
events that we cannot control and be
able to come back from a deficit,” she
added.
In game two, the Lakers were able
to come back from a 2-6 deficit with
defense being the key.
“Our defense really stepped up
and held them, which gave us a
chance from the plate to come back,”
said VanLoy.
Rachel Hinners was able to knock
in a home-run in each of the two
games, and Zollner hit 7-7 in both
games.

Lakers pick up first conference wins
By Ashleigh Dykes
ESTHERVILLE-After starting off
conference play 0-4, the Lakers were
able to turn things around and put
together six straight wins.
Sophomore
second-baseman,
Steve Kandborg, was a huge reason
why.
Over the course of the six games,
Kandborg had 14 hits, scored five
runs, drove in seven runs and stole
seven bases while batting .354.
Those numbers helped Kandborg
earn ICCAC Athlete of the Week
honors during the week of April 1.
The Lakers started their six-game
win streak on April 4 going 2-0 against
Buena Vista in a double-header.
They won the games 8-3 and 8-2,
respectively.
The Lakers were then able to go
4-0 against Southwestern Community
College in two back-to-back doubleheaders.
However, unable to hold that
momentum, the Lakers dropped
seven of their next eight conference
games.
Their only win of that stretch was
a 3-2 victory against Iowa Central on
April 14.

Jesus Brito was the winning pitcher,

hits and just one earned-run.

Iowa Central on April 3.

By Ashleigh Dykes
ESTHERVILLE-After dropping their
first four, the Lakers’ team members
were able to pick up their first two
conference wins in their double-header
against Iowa Central on April 3.
In the first game, the Lakers had
a lot of contributors from the batter’s
box.
Amber Holmgren led the way
hitting 2-3, which consisted of a three-
run home-run and a double.
They went on to win, 9-1.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lakers stayed hot with
their bats and went on to win, 11-3.
Holmgren provided the gamewinning double in the fifth inning.
The Lakers won both games in five
innings.
Pitcher Alexander Frausto took
both wins, only allowing seven hits
and four walks in the two matchups.
ESTHERVILLE-After finishing up
fall play in October, the Iowa Lakes
Golf team is back into competitive
competition for the spring season.
On April 4, the Lakers competed in
the DMACC Spring Invite, in which the
women placed 4th and the men came
in at 5th.
“We have a lot of work to do and
need to get better at finishing rounds
and staying in the moment and not
getting ahead of ourselves,” said head
coach, Andy Soper.
The women’s team shot a team
score of 371.
Leading the way was sophomore,
Sam Mueller, who shot an 86.
Taylor Heinrichs was next for
the Lakers, firing a 93, while Tressa
DeBoer and Cassie Galm shot a 95
and 97, respectively.
On the men’s side, they fired a
score of 327.
Leading the way for them was
freshman, Brandon Klein, with a 79.
