S a i n t M a r y ’s U n i v e r s i t y • C a r d i n a l A t h l e t i c s Forgetting UST loss is easy as SMU focuses on Knights Standings: Through Mon., Jan. 15 WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s basketball team entered last Saturday’s Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Thomas in the midst of one of their best starts in more than two decades. Unbeaten in their last two games, and winners of four of their last five, the Cardinals were eager for a shot at the league-leading Tommies — and a chance to end UST’s 35-game winning streak against them. It was supposed to be SMU’s coming-out party. But the Tommies had to rain on their parade. And when it rained, it poured. St. Thomas erupted for 55 second-half points — seven short of the Cardinals’ total for the game — as the Tommies pushed that winning streak to 36 straight with a 98-62 victory. “St. Thomas is a very good team, and they certainly proved that against us,” said SMU coach Mike Trewick. “We’ve been playing very well of late and it’s almost expected that eventually, you are going to have an off night. “(Against St. Thomas), we were a little off.” UST’s Bryan Schnettler scored 19 of his game-high 30 points during a pivotal 27-9 mid-game run that powered the Tommies to the win. “It’s frustrating to give up 98 points,” said Trewick, whose team returns to action today, when they play host to Carleton in another MIAC game. “But we told the guys after the game that they have to treat this game the same way they did after the Gustavus (loss) — they bounced right back (and beat Saint Johns). “We have to do the same thing this time around,” continued Trewick. “That one’s over — you learn from it and move on.” vs. Monday, Jan. 16, 2006 • SMU Gym TODAY’S TIDBITS THE RECORDS: Saint Mary’s Cardinals (5-3 MIAC, 7-6 Overall) Carleton Knights (5-3 MIAC, 8-5 Overall) LAST ACTION: The Cardinals had their two-game winning streak snapped as St. Thomas erupted for 55 second-half points in beating SMU 98-62 Saturday. … Carleton, meanwhile, erupted for 85 points en route to an 85-55 rout of St. Olaf on Saturday.
