When children are ready to learn, when working adults can support themselves and their families, when individuals can take care of their health, our whole community is stronger. That’s why United Way focuses on the critical issues that need to be addressed so we can stabilize families: education, income and health. United Way does what no single organization alone can do—bring together leaders from government, corporations, social services and the community to work through the issues and create solutions, and fund the network of programs that together can best support those solutions. Reaching out to help those who need it most helps all of us. United, we can create opportunities and inspire hope so that everyone can become independent. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED. “Helping people to help themselves and giving hope—that is what United Way does best and we should all be proud of that. ” —Marnie Kinsley BMO Capital Markets 鵾 Embodying the collaborative spirit that persists among Tocqueville members, Champions are generous volunteers dedicated to growing and strengthening the Tocqueville Society. Tocqueville Champions challenge colleagues and friends to invest in our community by partnering with United Way—either as new members or at higher giving levels. Working closely with the United Way Campaign Chair and Tocqueville Co-Chairs, these Champions are ensuring a strong foundation of philanthropy in Chicagoland by ensuring a strong Tocqueville Society. The Greater Chicago Food Depository was the venue for the 15th annual United Way Tocqueville Society recognition event on April 28. More than 100 Tocqueville members toured the facility before experiencing a tasting prepared by award-winning chef Charlie Trotter. “Serving others is a privilege,” chef Trotter told those gathered. “I will always choose serving before being served. As representatives of the private sector, you are in a position to do something great for others— and you do.” Tocqueville Society co-chairs Jay Henderson, Pam Strobel and Rick Waddell hosted the event in a hall overlooking the depository’s large food storehouse—a reminder of both the challenging economy as well as the leadership role Tocqueville members play in helping stabilize families. Rick Waddell took the opportunity to note that the generosity of Tocqueville members is accomplishing tremendous things. “United Way has long served the people of metropolitan Chicago, and many agencies that receive food from this depository also receive United Way funding for early child programs and financial literacy programs. Imagine how many lives are being impacted. Each of you is making that possible.” Laura Thrall, United Way president and CEO, thanked guests for their unwavering commitment and philanthropic leadership, and reminded everyone that their Tocqueville contribution is the most powerful way to advance the common good across Chicagoland. Recognized at the event for outstanding generosity and leadership were Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for their Half-Million Dollar Challenge Grant and Illinois Tool Works Inc. for their Latino Initiative Challenge Grant. The event was also the inaugural presentation of three awards—Deloitte LLP was honored as the first Million Dollar Tocqueville Company in Chicago; Robert W. Baird earned the Great Beginnings Award for an outstanding first time Tocqueville campaign; and Mayer Brown took the Law Cup for Outstanding Tocqueville Campaign by a law firm.
