ECHO Jazz 2013 for Hans Lüdemann „die kunst des trios“
The CD box „die kunst des trios“, released in 2012 by BMC records,
receives the ECHO Jazz 2013 award for the „editorial achievement of the year“.
The award ceremony and concert is on May 23 in the „Fischauktionshallen“ in
Hamburg. Hans Lüdemann will also perform as part of the „ECHO Jazz Allstars“.
Hans Lüdemann has undertaken a risky and unparalleled experiment and achieved
great success: As a pianist in 5 different trios with bass and drums and with 5 different
musical conceptions he recorded 5 CDs under similar conditions at the LOFT in Köln,
that capture each a single and unique concert.
It is with the 5-CD box that the dimension of the project can fully unfold and be perceived
as a whole. The box was released by the Hungarian record label BMC records,
supported by the „Kunststiftung NRW“, carefully and artistically designed, and equipped
with an opulent booklet and an additional DVD with concert videos.
The musicians are all top-level players of the German and European Jazz scene:
Robert Landfermann/Jonas Burgwinkel, Dieter Manderscheid/Christian Thomé,
Sebastien Boisseau/Dejan Terzic, Linley Marthe/Chander Sardjoe, Henning Sieverts/
Eric Schaefer, the sound quality of the recordings by engineer Christian Heck fulfills
highest standards.
Hans Lüdemann has worked with Jazz greats Jan Garbarek and Paul Bley as a young
musician, was teaching Jazz and African music as a visiting professor at Swarthmore
College/USA for a year and has pursued his personal artistic direction creating music for a
long time, both as a international performer - solo and with his groups TRIO IVOIRE and
ROOMS - as well as a composer. The ECHO award emphasizes his reputation as an
important creative voice in music.

„Do you have to be megalomane to release 5 CDs plus DVD with different trios
at once? Pianist Hans Lüdemann from Cologne had good reasons to do that.
His experiment to risk great spontaneity and to play five concerts of mostly improvised
music at the LOFT club, came out extremely exciting.
There are intricate compositions, especially in the power trio with electric bass player
Linley Marthe. Ohterwise - aside from the flickering quarter tones from the „virtual piano“
mostly acoustic: Eisler songs, colorful sounds, free improvisation, highly melodical
passages. Please don‘t be afraid of more than four hours full of ideas.“
