The City of Vaughan is Canada’s fastest growing municipality. Strategically located in the economic heart of the Greater Toronto Area, Vaughan borders the City of Toronto to the North. Incorporated as a City in 1991, Vaughan encompasses five vibrant communities, most notably Kleinburg, Maple, Concord, Woodbridge and Thornhill, each with its unique history and character. Residents and visitors are drawn to the City of Vaughan for its high quality of life, safe neighbourhoods, abundant green spaces and exciting tourist attractions. Canadian Family magazine (October 2006) ranked Vaughan as the fourth Best and Coolest City in Canada to raise a family, citing its sense of community, its easy access to cosmopolitan amenities and big-city life. 2 / Discover Vaughan Visitor Guide 2008/09 Our Discover Vaughan Visitor Guide invites you to learn about our city, the arts and entertainment, heritage and culture, festivals and events, gourmet experiences, accommodation choices, attractions, our great outdoors, as well as our outstanding retail experiences and first class entertainment. Founded in the 1820’s, Thornhill has a proud heritage. For the past thirty-two years the Society for the Preservation of Historic Thornhill has held their annual festival on the third Saturday of September. Streets are lined with over 200 craft vendors and delicious food and refreshment stands. Local artists who reside in Thornhill display their works while historical battle re-enactments sound out with musket and cannon blasts alongside foot stomping music. Thornhill has a designated heritage district in the Yonge and Centre Street area featuring many historically significant buildings. One of the most famous on Centre Street is the Thoreau MacDonald Vaughan Mills House where Group of Seven painter J.E.H. MacDonald created one of Canada’s most famous paintings “The Tangled Garden.” Thornhill boasts significant communities of Jewish, Italian, Chinese and Russian residents with more than 60 languages spoken here. This intriguing ethnic mix is reflected in a wide array of dining options throughout the city. Sports enthusiasts and nature lovers will delight in Thornhill’s parks and green spaces which include golf courses, ski hills and natural ponds. And if you’re a shopping enthusiast, head over to the Promenade mall, located in the Bathurst and Centre Street area for a shopping spree in more than 140 stores, including many of the “hottest” retail brands. Promenade features unique food, shops, and restaurants. And while you’re there, check out some of the fine theatrical productions at the City Playhouse. 6 / Discover Vaughan Visitor Guide 2008/09 The heart of hospitality in Vaughan is in Concord, located at Highway 7 and Interchange Way. Get ready to explore one of the most exciting areas for fun and entertainment. New hotels abound in the vicinity—the Hilton Garden Inn, the magnificent Toscana Banquet Hall, The Residence Inn by Marriott, The Courtyard by Marriott and the Monte Carlo Inn and Suites. Together these hotels offer nearly 600 rooms and suites to meet the needs of any traveller. The Interchange is also “Entertainment Central” featuring a superb variety of dining options, unique entertainment and nightlife. Enjoy an old style English Pub or the newly opened Wendel Clark’s Classic Grill and Sports Lounge. Dave and Buster’s offer a world of entertainment for children and adults alike, not to mention great food and games! Try glow in the dark golf at the Putting Edge Fun Centre or play world famous Pebble Beach at Tee Times Indoor Golf. Laugh at Yuk Yuk’s or sing along at Dueling Pianos musical cabaret. Prefer going to the movies? Imagine AMC 30, with 30 movie theatres under one roof. Love to shop? Head north on Jane Street to Vaughan Mills mall. With over one million square feet and 200 stores, this adds up to a two kilometre walk just to go once around this incredible enclosed mall. Famous for an innovative blend that includes fashion, outlets, dining and entertainment venues, Vaughan Mills is home to the world famous Bass Pro Shop, NASCAR Speed Park, and Lucky Strike Lanes, the bowling lanes to the stars and many other unique stores. Nearby, Reptilia and WEGZ continue the reputation for entertainment in Concord. Not that we’re biased, but we like to think of Concord as Entertainment Central. www.vaughan.ca/tourism • (905) 832-8585 / 7 kleinburg Specializing in corporate & private events Kleinburg Bookstore Welcome to the Village of Kleinburg, where you will find that the atmosphere of early Canadian traditions and architecture still prevail.
