TOO MUCH
INFORMATION?
I do not think there is any such a thing as
too much information. I am an unstoppable Googler. In other words, I spend lots
of time on google.com. Everything I ever
wanted to know is right there at my fingertips. I think it makes us smarter.
I recall doing research projects where we
had to visit the library and look up information in encyclopedias, check spelling and
grammar in dictionaries, and find those elusive synonyms in the thesaurus. The fact
that all that information, and a whole world
more, is right at my fingertips is a gift.
I would imagine that access to the information on the internet would be essential
to a travel agent, too. You can check out
tourist board and destination websites,
get immediate answers to client questions, review your potential suppliers, find
airfare, and book online. Even JAX FAX
has an Air Search Engine on our website
(www.jaxfax.com) where you can find
a consolidator to work with when looking for a specific flight. Our older issues
are archived online, and we have tools
and info geared to assist you in your
business. Again, no such thing as too
much information.
I have debated the issue of “TMI” with others. I think being able to look something up
with the touch of a few keys is amazing. If
I have a thought, or want to know something I can just “Google” it. Doing research
the old way was terribly time consuming,
and I never looked up what I wanted to
know – only what I needed to know. Now, I
can look up anything, anytime! There are a
lot of other search engines too, if you prefer a different environment in which to do
your searching.
The other side of this debate is that having
all of this information so easily accessible
is making us lazy. We are losing the skills
of research, of the experience of cracking
open a book and finding that necessary
nugget of information. There is definitely
something to be said about doing manual
research, and there is a lot of information

that is not online. Through time, people
have been careful to meticulously record
history and information, and I mean absolutely no disrespect or disregard for that. In
fact, the internet can lead you to that historical information, and often does!
Today however, if I find a topic of interest,
I am now much more likely to look it up on
the internet than I would have been to get
in the car and go to the library to do the
necessary research. In fact, I would have
wondered about my subject of interest for a
moment, and then just let that thought go.
Now, in the moment of the thought, I will
take the time to look it up, and some small
piece of the information and newfound
knowledge will stay with me forever.
In preparing this issue of JAX FAX, I looked
up cities in Croatia in search of perfect
photos, I used dictionary.com to double
check spelling and searched google for the
proper city names in the Taiwan article. I
cannot even say how long it would have
taken me to do the same exercise without
the internet.
While the internet is a marvelous thing, I
am a tactile reader, and find the sensation
of holding a book, or a magazine like JAX
FAX to be very important. I like the weight,
I like to flip pages, I like the feel of the paper. For reading, I want print. For research, I
want access to the internet. Luckily, the internet has gives us each the option to have
it any way we want it!
I must mention one thing that I am not so
appreciative of in this age of information.
Everyone is attached to and tuned into their
handheld gadgets all the time. When waiting for an appointment, or anywhere for that
matter – everyone has their device out and
their fingers are flying. We are each in our
personal worlds, alone with our thoughts,
and losing touch with personal interaction,
except via social media and email. I hope
we can find a balance – we need each other
to share all this newfound knowledge with!

KEEPING IT FRESH
If you always do what you’ve always done,
you’ll always get what you’ve always got!
I think to some extent we are all guilty of
this in business. However, in this rapidly
changing world, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
really doesn’t apply anymore. We all need
to take a hard look at how our businesses
have or haven’t adapted, and decide how
we can move forward in improving our
products and/or services. This process involves leaving your ego and successes of
the past behind and mapping a course to
future prosperity.
This is exactly the process that we at JAX
FAX have gone through the past several
months, and what you are reading now
is the result of months of planning and
hard decision making. When you produce
a product month in and month out for 40
years, it is easy to become complacent.
However, what is easiest is not always
best, and we took a long hard look at the
product we were producing versus our
competitor’s products, and decided it was
time for a change.
In celebration of our 40 years serving the
travel agent community, we are very proud

JAX FAX Travel Marketing Magazine. We
believe we have always had great content
that travel agents can use to help plan vacations for their clients. We have some of
the best travel writers in the business who
understand their role in producing articles
that will help you sell worldwide destinations to your clients. We also provide you
with specific products to sell through our
Best Buys, Spotlight and Consolidator Listings. However, we came to realize that the
way we presented this information was
dated, and not as compelling as it needed
to be. This led to some hard decisions to
change the status quo and move ahead in
a new direction. Our three month search
for a new art director led us to hire the
very talented man behind the redesign
of the magazine, Silvio Del Monaco. He
has given us a more appealing and readable magazine - and he’s not done yet.
We will continue to innovate and bring our
readership new tools and content you can
use to not only sell travel, but also build
your business.
Our commitment to bringing our readers
a better product is not just limited to our
print magazine. We are currently working on a redesign of our website and the
digital version of JAX FAX Magazine. In
our online tools, we have added several new air consolidators to our “Find
a Consolidator” search engine and are
working to build awareness and usage
of our Homebased Travel Agent Registry
(www.HBTAR.com).
This process has not been without its fair
share of stress and sleepless nights. However, we couldn’t be happier with what
we have achieved, and we hope you will

Solutions You Need in a Tough Economy

WITH CLIENTS
Is there a travel professional anywhere who
has not had a client or family member book
their trip through some alternative venue?
One moment we are certain of having a
loyal client and the next we are learning of
the great trip they are taking booked online
or with a cruise line direct or with another
agency. As regretful as the experience may
be, there is a lesson in the pain.
We all make the mistake of wrongly assuming once a client is happy with our services
they are ours for life. Unfortunately, however, the perceived value of any service
diminishes with elapsed time. Your clients
are daily visited with images of travel opportunities and unless your brand has a
very strong hold on their psyche, you may
lose them to the first pretty opportunity that
comes along.
No matter how good past experiences with
your brand may have been, unless you keep
the relationship immediate and fresh, your
clients are easily led astray.
So what’s the secret to perpetual customer
loyalty? Clients return when they feel connected to you and your travel practice at an
emotional level, the result of a relationship.
It’s not enough for them to have been satisfied with their prior encounters, they need
to feel you are a vital, even an indispensable

part of their travel life.
Here are a few things you can do to achieve
a powerful loyalty.
Stay connected – don’t let too much time
elapse between contacts. Visit with them
on a regular basis with newsletters, phone
calls, Facebook posts, notes and letters.
Know Your Clients – market to clients on a
one-to-one basis. Know their hobbies, know
their family, know why they travel. If they
like to cruise, provide them with cruise opportunities and information. If they don’t like
to cruise, then don’t! Market appropriately.
Train clients – don’t be afraid to let clients
know your expectations. Ask them to bring
you any travel offer in which they might be
interested. Let them know you will help
them evaluate the merit of any travel opportunity, no matter how big or how small. Empower them by teaching them the logistics
of travel, how you best perform your duties
and what you need and expect from them.
Establish the parameters of the relationship
from the outset and have them agree to
work with you within those ground rules.
Be approachable – believe it or not, some
clients feel like they are “bothering you” by
asking about travel prior to a booking decision. Assure your clients you want to hear
from them.
Be involved - look for opportunities to be
engaged with your clients outside of their
travel planning. The more actively you participate in your community, in volunteer
work, in civic functions or in social gatherings, the more “top of mind” you remain when a travel opportunity strays into
their path.
Finally, when a client slips up and does book
outside of your purview, don’t shun them or
make them feel badly. Instead, congratulate
them on their upcoming (or past) travel experience and then graciously remind them
of the opportunity to work with you when
they travel. Ask openly if they were not
happy with your past efforts on their behalf
and extract a promise of their return to you
the next time they travel. Assure them you
want their business. Marketing is not an onagain, off-again activity. Customer loyalty is
a hard-won prize and one needing continual
maintenance. Never let up in your efforts to
win over your clients.

HONEYMOON CRUISES
Cruise lines love honeymooners, especially those who splurge on the “extras” that
enhance onboard revenues. The love affair is mutual; what could be more romantic than sailing away on a beautiful ship
with someone you love? Or more relaxing and convenient than packing once and
then seeing two, three – or a half dozen
ports? The newer ships have an expanded
selection of alternative dining options, so
couples can experience different cuisines
in different locations.

A successful honeymoon cruise needs to
match the couple; budget, age and personality are key. Cost-conscious newlyweds,
for example, will find value and variety in

Caribbean to New England, Europe and
Alaska. If the budget-conscious couple is

Olsen, which depart from British ports
and sail the world. On a grander scale,

Oceania’s newest ships, the Marina and
soon-to-debut Riviera could be a good
match for older honeymooners – secondtime honeymooners, perhaps – not only
for the compatible passenger base, but

the South Pacific, as well as the Bon Appétit Culinary Center, the world’s only
hands-on culinary studio at sea.

For sophisticated couples with more to
spend, Azamara’s blend of luxury, service
(English butlers for suite passengers) and
adventure could be a good choice. Fresh
flowers, high-end linens, complimentary
wine with exceptional meals, port-intensive destinations in Europe, exotic Asia
and the Middle East are just part of the
appealing package.
Cunard, like virtually all cruise lines, offers
á la carte packages of romantic extras, at
a price. For $275, the Deluxe Occasion
Package includes a bottle of Perrier-Jouet, Grand Brut and a box of handcrafted
chocolates in the stateroom on arrival;
a fresh flower arrangement in the stateroom; a formal portrait photo; a champagne breakfast in bed on the morning
of choice and a $100 spa gift certificate.

All honeymoon packages need to be ordered well in advance; many, if not most,
lines require proof of marriage. Equally important, the romantic (but limited in number) tables for two need to be requested
as early as possible.
Couples who can’t imagine anything
more romantic than a Disney honeymoon among the characters of their childhood can list their names on the line’s
honeymoon gift register and pick up “honeymoon” buttons from guest services
(perhaps in the hope that buttons will yield
some “perks” during the cruise). A number of honeymoon-appropriate packages
can be pre-ordered, among them, the $99

You Don’t Know

“Who was Nikola Tesla?” asked the middleaged journalist from Brussels with the puzzled
look on her face. I was stumped too. Was he
a hero from the civil war that tore Yugoslavia
apart and that’s still a painful memory here
in Croatia?
Our guide at the Nikola Tesla Memorial Centre in Croatia’s quiet countryside set us both
straight. We had heard of Thomas Edison, yes?
Well, Nicola Tesla was an even bigger genius,
transforming the world with inventions and
beating Edison in the race to develop electricity.
If you took high school physics or chemistry you would know this of course, and a
visit to the Nicola Tesla Memorial Centre
(www.mcnikolatesla.hr) would be a must-see
on a visit to his mother country on the Mediterranean. Even if you don’t have a science background, the centre is a fascinating mix of images, words and sounds that describe the life
and work of the genius who ‘lit up’ the world.
During my two weeks in Croatia in October
2011, Tesla became a metaphor for the country itself. Like him, much of Croatia is largely
unknown, at least by North American travelers,
yet offers much of interest, particularly in the
way of active adventure.
Croatia isn’t much bigger than Switzerland, but
it’s got about 2,500 miles of coastline, eight
national parks and adventure tourism outfitters
offering everything you need for a variety of
outdoor fun.
Climbers head to Paklenica National Park with
its 1,150-foot vertical rock face. Mountain bikers choose from 186 miles of track near the ski
resort of Bjelolasica. For hikers, the white limestone of North Velebit National Park is crisscrossed with trails. Speleologists can spend
days exploring the country’s caves, including
the recently discovered Velebita cave with the
longest underground vertical drop in the world,
over 1,640 feet. And for canoeists and kayakers
there’s an abundance of clean rivers, lakes and,
of course, the island-studded coast.
First though, our group of international writers
wanted to see a bit of Zagreb, the country’s
chic capital. “Showing off is the main sport,”
laughed our guide, Hela Markanovi, as we
strolled through the city’s old town, where locals lounged in fashionable clothes, smoking
cigarettes and drinking coffee at back-to-back
cafes. (Mercifully, there are no Starbucks here.)
While walking a pedestrian-only cobblestone
street we notice a cravat shop, then learn that
cravats (men’s ties, that is) were first worn by
Croatians and the word ‘cravat’ comes from a
French pronunciation of Croat. (For pure silk
ties made in Croatia, Markanovi recommends
Salon Croata in the Oktogon Passage.)
Besides coffee and cravats, Zagreb offers other
kinds of culture; a neo-Gothic cathedral, a new
Museum of Contemporary Art and a stunning
cemetery – the Mirogoj Monumental Cemetery. With its black and white tiled arcades,
ivy-covered columns and interplay of lights and
shadows, it’s considered one of Europe’s most
artistically significant.
A modern four-lane motorway (with tolls) leads
out of Zagreb; rent a car and it’s easy to get
around. When Croatia joins the European Union
in 2013 the motorway will extend all the way to
Dubrovnik on the southern-most coast.
Two hours south of Zagreb is the Lika-Karlovac
region. Leaving the motorway and driving the
‘old’ road is like taking a trip back in time. Old
women wear kerchiefs, shepherds stand watch
over sheep in fields and water wheels still grind
grain. And yet, modern adventure tourism
has arrived.
LET THE ADVENTURES BEGIN
When we stop for lunch at Mrežnica House
(www.mreznicka-kuca.com) on the bank
of the river by the same name, a fleet of red
canoes awaits us. After a traditional lunch of
meat and potato dishes (lamb is a specialty) on
the outdoor patio, some of us pair up to paddle
while others join a tour guide for a cycle.
The beautiful green water of the Mrežnica River
is slightly acidic, and over time it has dissolved
some of the underlying rock, creating 93 waterfalls over about 40 miles.
Paddling here means lots of portaging if you’re
going upstream, but downstream it’s pure play.
Most of the ‘falls’ are short ledges. After watching other paddlers go over a ledge, my partner
and I nervously follow suit, then realize the flexible plastic canoes were designed for this! And
even if we capsize, the water’s warm, so warm
that we eventually ‘park’ our canoe on a ledge
and jump in for a swim.
The next day we’re paddling another river, this
time in traditional American canoes. We’re on
the lazy Gacka River, enjoying bucolic scenery;
an old water mill, fields with grazing sheep, a
white stone chapel against a cloudless blue
sky, a fisherman casting for trout. The Old Town
canoes are from the USA but we’re clearly in
a different country, maybe a different century.
This delightful disconnect was reinforced when
we stopped for coffee a few hours later. Sipping a cappuccino, I noticed something big and
furry in one corner. A large brown bear stood
with its mouth agape and tongue lolling out,
while a red fox lurked at its feet. Then I noticed
a rabbit standing on its hind legs, dressed in a
man’s vest and hat, with a walking stick in one
paw. Where am I again, Alice’s Wonderland?
You get that otherworldly feeling at Plitvice
Lakes National Park too. Here, at this UNESCO
World Heritage Site the bears and other wildlife are alive, but so too, it seems, is the karst
landscape. Once a confluence of rivers, there

azure blue water. Two kayaks are lashed to the
bow and a half a dozen bicycles mounted to a
rack on the stern. Snorkeling gear is tucked out
of sight. For the next three days we (Kelemen,
two of his guides and one other guest) will explore the Elaphiti group of islands by just about
every possible means.
These small islands off Dubrovnik are rich in
history, yet relatively unspoiled. Only three of
the 13 are inhabited and two are car-free. Fewer people live on them now than in the past.
Šipan, for instance, was once home to 7,000
and boasted 38 churches and chapels. Today,
about 400 people call this sun-drenched island
home. Fortunately, half a dozen of them are
fishermen; our first night we dine on smoked
tuna, pasta with fresh shrimp and octopus patties at Kod Marka, an acclaimed restaurant on
the water.

grey and turquoise all interconnected by gurgling, gushing, delightfully noisy waterfalls. The
landscape is constantly evolving as carbon dioxide in the water calcifies underwater plants,
building rock ledges and forcing water to
change course.
In a word, Plitvice Lakes is stunning. A trail follows the perimeter of some of the lakes, along
with boardwalks. A boat takes passengers
across one lake. However private boating and
swimming are not allowed; the park doesn’t
want people to disturb the delicate ecology.
No trip to Croatia is complete without seeing
some of the coast and it’s a cheap, 50-minute
flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik. When the rest
of my group heads home, I hop on a plane for
Dubrovnik, where I’m met by Željko Kelemen,
the owner of Huck Finn Adventure Travel.

TRUFFLES AND MORE
Every weekend from the beginning of October
until mid-November is the annual Livade Days
of Truffles Festival in the tiny town of Livade.
There are food and wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, a truffle hunting demonstration and
a truffle auction. This is also the home of Restaurant Zigante (www.restaurantzigante.com),
whose owner found the world’s largest truffle
– a beefy 2.8 pounds – in 1999. Before looking around we head straight to the restaurant’s
outdoor patio to learn what these prized and
pricey fungus taste like in the hands of gourmet chefs. Surprisingly, we discover they’re
best eaten raw. The waiter begins by waving
an offensive smelling nugget under my nose
(to attest to its freshness), then grates it over a
plate of venison carpaccio. The paper-thin slices
meld beautifully with the meat. The next dish,
grated truffle over fresh tagliatelle with melted
butter couldn’t be simpler, yet tastes extravagant. Each course of our four-course menu
features white truffles, the last dish being the
most surprising: vanilla ice cream with truffles.
It’s… well, different. “You either like them or
you don’t,” explained Tanja Prodanovi, marketing manager for Restaurant Zigante afterwards,
adding that “the truffle has to be the king” with
other ingredients playing second fiddle.
After lunch we wander over to a grassy field to
watch a truffle hunting demonstration. A man
with a large paunch is standing with two midsized dogs. When he gives the command, they
immediately start sniffing the ground. A truffle
had been ‘planted’ earlier and within seconds
the older dog, Jackie, is digging at the precise
spot. The hunter rewards her with a biscuit,
then digs up the truffle for himself.
The hunters go out at night, explains my guide,
Antonio Giudici, when the scent of the truffles
is most intense. Because of the prices white
truffles command – over $8,800/lb last October – hunters are secretive. “A hunter will
never tell you where he found truffles or how
many he found,” Antonio says, “and the dogs
don’t talk!”

wine – the region has three main varieties of

Q. A recent survey indicates that Croatia is the
“Top Up and Coming Destination” in Europe
for 2012. What are your expectations and goals
for 2012?
A. We believe that the true potential of this
market has not yet materialized for us completely. American travelers are curious about
new experiences while they travel and I believe
Croatia is still undiscovered for them, and thus
appealing. We have worked very hard to promote our destination through the media over
the past few years and it is now time to capitalize on the success we had with that. I believe
that the travel agents and tour operators can
more easily sell tours and packages when the
clientele is more familiar with the destination.
We will keep working on strengthening our
relations with the media but also with travel
agents and tour operators who are interested
in, or are already selling Croatia.
Q. Croatia is well known for its history, architecture and culture. It is becoming more
well-known for adventure and culinary travel.
What should agents share with their clients
about Croatia?
A. Croatia is a land whose rich cultural heritage
is discovered not only from within the walls of
numerous museums, galleries and churches,
many of which today are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, but also in that magical
place on the Mediterranean, where even the
shortest stroll becomes a journey down a staircase thousands of years old. With as many as
ten cultural phenomena, Croatia is among the
countries with the most protected intangible
cultural heritage elements, recorded on the
UNESCO List. Croatia is also one of the ecologically best-preserved parts of Europe; we have 8
national parks and 11 parks of nature.
The coast and its natural beauty is enhanced by
architectural jewels such as you’ll find in Pula,
Zadar, Sibenik, Trogir, Korcula, Split and the
pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik. Many smaller
towns are equally impressive.
The Mediterranean climate on the coast is
balmy enough for olives, figs, vines, oranges
and lemons to grow. The beaches, crystal
clear, turquoise blue waters of the Adriatic
Sea are still among our main attractions. There
are more than 1,000 islands to explore with
many small bays and marinas, a heaven for
sailing enthusiasts.

Q. When is the best time to travel to Croatia
and is there a program you would recommend
for the agents to talk to their clients about?
A. It is important to note that Americans like
to travel to Croatia off season, that is spring
and fall in addition to the summer, and we have
now developed many additional programs and
offerings in those periods. Gastronomy travel is
one segment of Croatian tourism that we are
very proud of and which is very interesting to
Americans. The Croatian gastronomy is specific
for every region, reflecting the country’s geography, history, and culture. Each Croatian region
has its own, unique cuisine. The northern and
southern areas of the Adriatic are characterized
by differences in taste and preparation of more
Mediterranean foods. In the north of Croatia
however, Austro-Hungarian culinary influences
are more evident.
Q. What is the experience of Croatia from a
cruise ship?
A. Dubrovnik, our main port of call, is known
as the “Jewel of the Adriatic” for good reason.
Its timeless beauty is encased in ancient fortress walls that surround Old Town Dubrovnik.
Walking the narrow streets of the Old Town
with a guide is a must. Guests should also visit
Dubrovnik city walls and ride the cable car that
takes you to the Srdj Mountain for amazing panoramic views of the city. One can take a boat
tour of the neighboring Elaphiti Islands, Korcula or Peljesac peninsula, well known for wine
in Croatia.
Split is our second port of call, and also the
largest city on the Middle and south Dalmatian
coast. Diocletian’s Palace is living ancient history and has the status of a UNESCO protected
site, standing as a monument to the power of
the Roman Empire. Medieval buildings have

From all accounts from those who have
recently visited the Plaka, the protests are
self-contained at Syntagma, and are not
unlike the brand of expression in our own
backyards on Wall Street.
Athens neighborhoods are a treasure trove
of great finds: Monastiraki’s narrow streets
come alive with its flea market; Psiri’s
shops and small churches by day and
lively nightlife; Palaio Faliro, a suburb on
southern Athens’ coast is a great respite to
sip an ouzo on the rocks or have a coffee;
or, lose yourself in the beyond-belief blue
sea and sky that is so indelibly Greece
at Vouliagmeni, arguably the best beach
in town.
Says Nicholas Filippidis, Director of
Product Development in North America for
Louis Cruises, “The unions and workers
have accepted an agreement and they are
implementing it…so definitely the steam
has been released and yes, it is certainly
safe to travel to Greece.”
But with the demonstrations in Syntagma
“Greece is the mother of democracy and
the people are demonstrating peacefully,”
says Ginny Ravanos, owner of Brooklynbased Aegean Mediterranean Tours.
“My daughter lives there as does my new
grandchild, so I know it is perfectly safe
and this is what I tell my clients.”
Likewise, Homeric Tours’ officers at
Syntagma Square send daily reports about
local events taking place outside their
windows and confirm the status quo, says
Tasoula Christofidis, General Manager at
the New York office.
Chris Balciyan, Director of Sales &

Tours says, “I walked to Syntagma
Square to see what was happening; the
demonstrations were focused on the
government, not other people and certainly
not travelers.” The biggest glitch he faced
was a day-long taxi strike.

Nevertheless, tourism is off to a slow start.
Americans are prone to a stay-at-home
mentality during Presidential election
years, the economy on both sides of the
Atlantic is sluggish, but more worrisome
are sky-rocketing fuel surcharges that can
turn a $1,000 airfare into $1,700, making
it nearly impossible to continue selling air/
land packages.
If clients act decisively, savvy agents can
nab a few deals such as a $1,000 airfare
(with tax and surcharges) from Delta; while
Louis Cruises is extending deals beyond
early spring, the traditional discount time,
as an incentive to spur bookings.
Currently, Delta offers the only nonstop
service to Greece from the U.S. yet carriers
from all three alliances – OneWorld,
Sky Team, Star Alliance, and Virgin
Atlantic – operate flights from the U.S. to
Athens, where all American travelers first
touch down.
Ravanos reports religious and college
groups are following through on long-term
plans to visit Greece, as are honeymooners
who have no intention of delaying their trips.
Homeric Tours’ Alexandra Tsakanikas, vice
president of operations says, “Bookings
are coming in incredibly close to departure,
a long-standing trend.” Americans are in
the habit of waiting for a “deal” that may

Most deals exist for a very short window,
says Cally Papas, President of Cloud
Tours, often expiring at the end of March
and April, long before high season. Papas,
who features four and five-star boutique
properties, does not predict a softening
in prices among those hotels, especially
on the Greek Islands, so has created a
series of value-added amenity packages.
Cloud Tours’ island-hopping programs

wine tastings, short cruises on catamarans
and schooners to thermal waters inside
a volcano crater, barbecued meals, and
sunset sails. Cooking classes were added
in the past and will continue to be featured.

Jeep rovers line up to transport us down
a sandy road from Eastgate Airport to the
Kapama River Lodge, one of the largest
privately owned game reserves in South
Africa. As the porter loads my suitcase, he
asks, “Where are you from?” I tell him,
“The U.S.” He replies, “Forget America,
you are home now. You are in South
Africa.” I will do that, I promise us both.
We depart on game drives every morning
before dawn, and every evening as the
moon rises. During the day we swim, nap,
read, and sip cold fruit slushies at the lodge.
We also visit Camp Jabulani, owned and
operated by the same Roode family as our
lodge. Thirteen rescued elephants, along
with their tag-along babies, take visitors on
an unforgettable walk through the reserve.
The northernmost province of Limpopo
is famous for its wide variety of culture;
five distinct indigenous peoples with their
individual arts, language, traditional dress,
and music. This is one of the reasons we
have chosen Limpopo to tour. But it is the
game drives that draw so many visitors to
Africa, and Limpopo is one of the finest
places to see them.
If you are interested in conservation and a
more in depth education than just looking
at wildlife, there’s also the Hoedspruit
Endangered Species Center to visit here
at Kapama. This center focuses on rare,
vulnerable or endangered animals, as well
as treat and rehab orphaned and injured
animals. The Cheetah Conservation project
is one of their focuses, breeding and release
cheetahs.
A myriad of jeep tracks criss-cross the
40,000-acre, privately owned Kapama
Reserve (www.kapama.co.za), where
absolutely no hunting is allowed. A
single fired shot would scare away these
magnificent creatures that parade before
us, totally undisturbed, as if we aren’t even
present.
Once upon a time, the reserves were
ranches, (an attempt to raise cattle),
but too many wild creatures saw the
bovines as a fast food easy meal and
the environment was too harsh. Forty
water holes remain from those by-gone
days, providing opportunities for superb
game viewing. The game are traded and
purchased amongst reserves to keep the
herds healthy and balanced. They are
fenced in, all except the leopards, who
can climb trees and move about as they
wish, disregarding all manmade attempts
at control.
We ride in open safari jeeps, with tiered
seating so no heads block the view of lions,
elephants, wildebeests, rhinos, warthogs,
kudu, impala, zebra, giraffe and Cape
buffalo. Of the hundreds of animals we
see, the most astounding is the wallowing
Cape buffalo, grunting and lounging in
the mud only a few dozen yards from our
jeep. We watch for half an hour.
Mother lions walk slowly through the
bush, hunting. A female giraffe rips acacia
branches with her teeth and eyes us with
her long lashes. Warthog families trot
along, their tails held high. The elephant’s
great ears flap as they walk, placing their
feet very deliberately in the sandy soil. Our
game spotter sits in a chair like an outrigger
seat, off the front of the land rover. Our
guide drives and scopes the land, glancing
down at the road from time to time,
looking for tracks.
On our evening drive, strange and beautiful
bird songs pierce the cooling air, guinea
fowl hop across the road, and bush babies
eye us with their enormous eyes. The full
orange moon rises over the grasslands
and we tuck blankets around our legs to
ward off the chill. Then a leopard appears
on our guide’s sonar. We track him down
and accompany him in the jeep as he walks
cross country for half an hour, searching for
a meal, his eyes glowing like burning coals
in the spotlight. He is breathtaking. We
hoped to see “The Big Five,”(lion, leopard,
rhino, elephant, Cape buffalo) and our
guide makes our wish come true.
After Kapama, we spend a few days
touring the province, following the Open
Africa Ribollo Arts Route where we visit
a woodworker, a batik artist, a jewelry
maker, and a potter’s studio. We stop at
Sunland Baobab Tree, the world’s widest of
its species. With a 47-meter circumference,
it is believed to be 6,000 years old. It’s so
spacious inside the hollow tree that 60
people could be crammed in, or only a
handful enjoying the draft beer, seats
and music system! We also check out
the Modjadji Cycad Reserve, high in the
Lobedu Mountains. Here is the oldest and
largest concentration of this ancient palm
like plant whose cones bear seeds that
were once the main diet of prehistoric
mammal-like reptiles. Twelve miles of wellconstructed trails drop off the mountain
to the acacia and grassland below.
Our last night in Limpopo is spent at
Protea Ranch Hotel outside Polokwane
(www.theranch.co.za). Their fantastic
program, “Walking with the Lions,” a one
and a half hour walk with young lions in
their natural habitat, is the highlight of

groomed for human interaction.
At times, the lions run ahead, then double
back and come towards us. Should I stop
or walk towards them? What is the more
aggressive behavior? A handler picks up
a tail and hands it to me, which I hold
like a leash. The lions walk among us
like comrades, at our sides, like a pet on
a leash. Yet they don’t feel anything like
dogs. There are three females and two
males around 9 months old.
The lions periodically run off and romp,
until a handler calls them back with
scraps of meat. It feels surreal. It feels as if
the air is supercharged with electricity. It
feels so incredibly exciting to be walking
with these kings of the animal kingdom.
Helen Keller said, “Life is a either a
daring adventure or nothing at all.” A
trip to Limpopo, South Africa raises that
bar quite high.

Taiwan
Taiwan is a mix of densely populated urban
areas, generally located near the sea on
relatively flat terrain, and towering mountain ranges just 10 or 20 miles inland. In
fact, Taiwan’s highest mountain (Yu Shan,
or Jade Mountain) is some 600 feet taller
than Mt. Fuji, in Japan. It has spectacular mountain lakes, aboriginal villages,
miles and miles of excellent biking paths,
world class hot springs, a vast network of
well-maintained hiking trails, many originally built by the Japanese, and is one of
the great wind surfing destinations in
the world.
Culinary Experiences
Taiwan’s restaurants and ability to faithfully
produce the cuisines of many regions of
China make it one of the top culinary destinations in Asia. The Japanese cuisine, especially sushi and set meals, has improved
dramatically during the 10 years, and is
now pretty close to the real thing. I visited
an “Indian Pizza” restaurant on my most
recent trip and ordered a lamb curry pizza,
with cheese and masala; it was actually
delicious. We also visited a Thai restaurant
that was nearly as good as some of the
better ones I’ve eaten at in Bangkok. There
are also decent Italian restaurants in Taipei.
There is room to improve in the area of
American cuisine, though they have nearly
every fast food chain we do, and French
cuisine is also a work in progress.
One can find unique, “signature” food
products and dishes from town to town
because the steep mountains and deep
valleys kept these towns separate in the

past, when traveling was much more difficult than it is today. For example, I was
recently in a former gold mining town
called Jiufen. There is an “old” street,
which for the most part has been turned
into a tourist arcade, where one can find
rows of stalls selling various foods and local crafts. I noticed certain food items here
that are simply not seen in Taipei, or other
cities I’ve been to throughout the country. A number of stalls sold a kind of large
gently rounded dumpling with translucent
skin and a mass of red color directly under
the skin at the top, which is a produced by
red yeast with sweet rice fermented with
wine, and mixed with fresh pork and fresh
bamboo shoots. You can apparently find
this in Mainland China as well, but I don’t
think it is sold just 25 miles away, in Taipei.
At Sun Moon Lake I sampled a steamed
dumpling with an orange yellow semitranslucent skin made mainly from pumpkin. While pumpkin buns are fairly common
in Taipei, pumpkin skin dumplings are certainly not; the dumpling was filled with succulent local mushrooms. Another unique
item was a steamed ball made from taro
strips with pieces of mushroom mixed in.
It was served with a hot chile sauce with
garlic and fermented red beans mixed in a delicious combination. One can also get
local mountain chicken, a very small variant of the farm raised chicken most of us
are used to; it’s generally grilled until crispy
and served with a spice and herb mixture
that I wasn’t quite able to fathom, although
I think it has local mild peppercorns as the
main ingredient and garlic as well.
Similarly, one can find tofu stuffed with
fish paste sold in Juifen. This is not
unique; what makes it unusual is that after being stuffed, additional fish paste is
placed on the outside of the tofu, and it
is then cooked, and served with a clear
light sauce.
I have also had the opportunity to eat a
typical “spa” meal in Wulai, which is a hot
spring resort town located about 15 miles
southeast of Taipei, tucked away among
2,000 foot mountains. Wulai is an area that
was formerly the home of one of the several aboriginal cultures that inhabited the
island of Formosa before Chinese began
to settle them, mainly in the 17th and 18th
centuries. One of the many interesting
dishes (which included another dish made
with fiddlehead ferns) was a soup made
with with chicken legs, local peppercorns
(which are less spicy and more bitter than
Indonesian peppercorns, and somewhat
“lemony” in taste), and yellow ginger. The
chicken is boiled in this broth for a few
hours until it’s literally falling off the bone.
Taiwan also has perhaps the best teas in
the world. Their Oolong tea has won international competitions. My personal favorite
is Alishan tea, from an area located more
than a mile high in altitude. The tea has a
delicate fragrance and flavor that makes it
one of the most desirable and costly teas
in Taiwan. The same area also produces
a very aromatic and balanced Assam tea.
Taiwan’s Top Ten
There is great emphasis placed on “Top

personal visits. Of course, I haven’t been
everywhere but I think I’m getting close:
1. 101 Tower had it’s relatively brief “15
minutes of fame” as the world’s tallest
building; but it has a great collection of
shops and restaurants, an attractive observation area, and the wait is no longer
interminable to get up.
2. Wulai or similar hot springs (one can
find them in many places; I’ve been to
them in Danshui, Beto, Elam, and Kenting.)
They are inexpensive, provide a truly relaxing experience, and are well maintained
and clean. They generally contain a variety of temperature regulated pools, along
with wet and dry saunas and a plunge
pool to close up all those open pores.
Many spas have food-sauna packages that
are quite affordable; the food is Taiwan’s
equivalent of California Spa cuisine...light,
fresh veggies stressed, simple, wholesome, healthy.
3. Taroko Gorge is not quite the Grand
Canyon but it is a great natural wonder
in its own right; thousands of feet deep
in places, extremely narrow; generally
the roads wind up through these gorges,
tracking the main river which carved them,
rather than overlook them, so one gets to
experience the sometimes claustrophobic
ambiance of being hemmed in by such
majestic peaks. The highest mountains
in the park are above 11,000 feet and get
snow in the winter despite being located
in a semi-tropical climate.
4. Kenting is one of the most incredible
examples of headlands I’ve ever seen.
This is the very bottom of Taiwan and from
various well-constructed viewpoints, you
can see view the expanse of landscape
unfold in front of you - both east and west
coasts converging in a single point. You
can climb up to nearly 1,000 feet for a panoramic view of the entire area. And there’s
also an excellent hot spring in the vicinity to soothe any post hiking aches you
may have.
5. Taipei Expo was originally the site of

the Taipei International Flora Expo, most of
the original pavilions are still there; some
of them provide completely unique and
unexpected perspectives on ecology and
sustainability. That includes one building
created almost entirely out of recycled
plastic bottles (all of the walls, ceiling, etc.
with just a few steel beams), which also
employs a natural sprayed water cooling
system, lowering the ambient temperature
by several degrees, thus, lowering energy
costs. The Pavilion of Dreams is one of the
best places to take kids that I’ve ever been
to, due to the plethora of interactive components to the exhibit including a huge
360 degree video mural which can grow
trees out of the ground when kids press in
the right place on the screen or even just
hold their breath. A device placed on the
wrist keeps track of various statistics of
your visit, syncs up with various scanners
to produce unique characters made of light
or to interact with videos. Standing in special areas and waving one’s hands produces flashes of fairy dust or other fantastic
effects. The machine which collects the
devices at the exit also spits out a unique
fortune based partly on user choices at
the beginning.
6. Taipei National Museum: When former President Chiang Kai-shek fled from
the Chinese mainland he had either the
foresight or the chutzpah to snatch most
of the imperial treasure trove in Beijing and
ship it across to Taiwan. Whatever the motives or propriety of this singular act, there’s
no denying that this museum contains
perhaps the most extensive collection of
early Chinese art, artifacts and jewelry on
the planet.
7. Sun Moon Lake: I was very fortunate
to visit Sun Moon Lake on my most recent
trip. I think that it gets short shrift in most
travel guides. We were there for most of
two days but I feel that 3 days are definitely needed to fully experience this scenic mountain lake and surrounding shores.
There are multiple hiking trails, most with
easy-to-climb steps carved into the mountainside on most steep areas. They vary
from nearly flat wheelchair accessible
lakeside trails to challenging 3 mile hikes
that gain 4,000 feet in altitude. Incredible
views of the lake are found in many places.
Some of the hikes reward the visitor with
variety of towers and viewing platforms
from virtually every scenic point on the
lake. There’s also a vast cultural park complete with entire reconstructed Aboriginal
village, crafts, performances, etc. Both
parks can be reached from the lake via a
scenic cable car traversing over mountain
ridges. Ferryboats and water taxis ply the
lake’s multiple piers. I advise going on a
weekday, as there’s far less of a crowd.
8. Yushan/Alishan is a high mountain
resort town located about 20km from
Yushan National Park. Yushan Mountain is
higher than Mt. Fuji, and is a popular climbing destination. Permits are required for
any kind of climbing or even difficult hiking
in Taiwan. Apparently there are extremely
high winds near the summit of Yushan,
which make having a guide and sticking to
the established route absolutely imperative.
9. Night markets throughout Taiwan
are fascinating from both a culinary and
cultural standpoint. Each one has a different look and feel. Some are ultra traditional such as Nonxia Market in an older
part of Taipei; others, such as the one in
Kaohsiung, feature more adventurous
items, such as a steamed bun filled with
pineapple, ham, pork, and melted cheese
(awesome!) offered up by a local culinary
legend. Night markets offer several blocks
full of pushcarts selling everything from
deep fried chicken cutlets with a wide variety of seasonings offered (called chicken
pie, for some reason -the best is probably
at Rao He, in Taipei) to stinky tofu (you
may wish to give this cart a wide berth), to
deep fried squid balls. Also found here are
endless varieties of noodles and noodle
soups, oyster pancakes, a favorite of Taipei night-market goers, both Chinese and

German-style sausages and pig’s knuckles
and every type of dumpling and steamed
bun you can imagine. For dessert, try fruit,
sweets, and refreshments including finely
crushed ice with various types of beans
boiled in with sugar, fruit-flavored tapioca
and jellies, fresh fruit, jam, taro, pudding,
and items spooned over frozen milk, which
has the consistency of powdery snow.
10. Danshui is a seaside town just 40
minutes from downtown Taipei by MRT
(Taiwan’s subway system). Danshui has
an extensive system of alleys and lanes,
all of them crammed with stalls selling all

manner of foods and crafts, from wedding
cakes which are more like huge densely
filled crackers, to deep fried mushrooms
served like french fries, to fishball soup,
to crispy sesame buns filled with pork that
have a slightly smoky flavor from being
cooked in a large ceramic drum heated by
a charcoal fire.

“honorable mention” list, along with Taichung, which has some great museums
with excellent interactive kid-friendly

Populous Oahu is the site of the capital
Honolulu and world famous Waikiki. It’s a

Ever since Acapulco enjoyed its heyday as
a jetsetter destination in the 1950’s and

Lagos was never a large city; its importance

Q. Some of our agents may not be familiar with XL Airways. Can you tell us when
XL Airways was established, and a little
about the airline?
A. We were founded in 1995 and rebranded as XL Airways France in 2006.
Our hub is Paris Charles de Gaulle airport
and we offer both scheduled service and
charter operations globally. We operate a
modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing equipment. Although our primary focus is the
leisure market, many of our long-haul
flights offer two classes of service.
Q. What regions does XL Airways serve?
A. In addition to flying scheduled service
between USA and Paris Charles de Gaulle
we provide service to Asia, within Europe
(Venice, Sicily and Corsica) and to popular
leisure destinations in Mexico & the Caribbean. We are the only airline to offer nonstop service between France and Las Vegas. This is also true between France and
Malé (Maldives), and between France and
Phuket (Thailand).
Q. How many years has XL Airways
France served the US market?
A. This will be our third summer of seasonal scheduled, non-stop service. Every year we’ve added more flights and
frequency. This year, we’re introducing
scheduled service to San Francisco.
Q. From where in the US does XL Airways fly?
A. We fly from New York JFK, San Francisco and Las Vegas - all non-stop - to Paris
Charles de Gaulle. During the peak summer travel period, we have up to six flights
a week to/from New York JFK and two

Q. When does 2012 seasonal service
commence?
A. Flights from New York JFK start May
4th, San Francisco’s inaugural flight is May

Q. Does XL Airways offer any flights or
services that other airlines do not?
A. Our fares are great; this is the first
thing I want agents to know – our fares
are very, very competitive, but we also
provide all the comforts and amenities a
leisure traveler should expect including a
hot meal, a selection of beverages, periodicals, on-board entertainment, pillow and
blanket. On the Las Vegas and San Francisco flights we feature a premium cabin –
Galaxie Class – with extra comforts including leather seats with added leg space and
recline, a welcome drink, individual entertainment screens, complimentary amenity
kit and a choice of hot meals.
Q. Tell us about your equipment.
A. Our fleet consists of Airbus A320,
A330 and Boeing 737-800 equipment. All
XL Airways France long haul flights are operated with Airbus A330-200 or A330-300.
Short and medium-haul flights are operated with Airbus A320 or Boeing 737-800
equipment. Seating on the A330-200 is
2-3-2 in Galaxie Class and 3-3-3 or 2-4-2 in
the main cabin.
Q. Where can travel agents book flights
for XL Airways?
A. Any travel agent with access to a GDS
system can ticket XL Airways France.
Our airline symbol is “SE.” Of course, if
an agent doesn’t have access to a GDS
system, either directly or through a host
agency, or if they prefer to ticket directly
with an airline they can call our US office

PARIS - THE GREAT INDOORS

Last month we discovered the unknown
and seldom-visited Parisian parks — Paris’
“Great Outdoors.” This month we’re going
indoors to discover Paris’ great unknown
and seldom-visited museums. There’s
much more to see besides the Louvre and
the Musee d’Orsay. There are ways to
avoid lines at the Louvre even on its most
crowded days. Instead of waiting to venture
down the Louvre’s stunning glass Pyramid,
look for the Carrousel du Louvre — the
small arch at the beginning of the Tuileries
Gardens — and take those adjoining stairs
down to the Louvre’s underground mall.
Plan an evening of culture with a late visit to
the Musee d’Orsay. After viewing Manet’s
Dejeuner sur L’Herb (Picnic on the Grass),
have your own feast in one of Paris’ most
elegant, chandeliered and mirrored NeoRococo dining rooms. The Musee d’Orsay’s
dining room is, by far, the most elegant
museum restaurant in the world. Nowhere
in Paris can you eat in such splendor at
such paltry prices. It ranks in magnificence
up there with the Les Ambassadeurs
Restaurant in the Hotel de Crillon and Le
Meurice of the Hotel Meurice.
In the courtyard of the Musee d’Orsay
is the museum of French history and the
great personages in French history, the
Museum of the Legion of Honor. And as
with many museums in Paris, the building
itself has an amazing history. It was the
Hotel (mansion) de Salm, and rumor has it
that the south facade of our White House
(with its rounded colonnade) drew its
inspiration from the Hotel de Salm’s main
facade with its rounded, half-domed central
projection.
Paris has a museum for every taste. A
museum for almost every artist (from
Delacroix to Zadine), and a museum
spanning every historic period. So let’s start
in Roman and Medieval Paris. The medieval
Musee Cluny incorporated Roman baths.
How apropos visiting Gothic art in a Gothic
home. It’s Paris’ “Cloisters Museum,” but
the Cloisters is a medieval composite of
many different cloisters from non-extant
medieval buildings. Cluny’s most touted
work is the famous Lady and the Unicorn
tapestry.
The Museum of the Renaissance is just a
half-day trip out of Paris, a welcome addition
to the usual Versailles and Fountainebleau
day trips. The Ecouen Museum of the
Renaissance is, fittingly, in a Renaissance
chateau.
Instead of a day trip to Chartres, Metro to
a seldom-visited great cathedral, St. Denis.
St. Denis is important architecturally and
historically. It is the birthplace of the Gothic
Style. The Gothic pointed arch in the
ambulatory was first used in this church,
by Abbott Suger. St. Denis also doubles
as a museum of sepulchral sculpture.
Get to see what ancient French kings and
queens actually looked like and what they
wore from these stone-funerary effigies.
However, there is one exception: Louis
Musee D’Orsay
XVI and Marie Antoinette (both beheaded
in 1793) are attired in clothes from 1815
— Empire style — the year of the Bourbon
Restoration.
Head north a few blocks from Printemps
Department Store, still on Boulevard
Hausmann, and you’ll arrive at my favorite
Parisian small museum — Paris’ Frick (New
York) and Wallace Collection (London). This
museum is named after Edouard Andre
(banker) and his wife Nelie Jacquemart
(artist). Like the Frick, it’s a private mansion
built to house a private collection. This
collection concentrates on French 18thcentury painting. My favorites are the
Davids and Vigee-LeBruns. The Jacquemart
Andre also has one of the best collections
of Italian Renaissance paintings, including
works by Uccello and Mantegna.
I also lead a Chopin Tour of Paris. We visit
Chopin’s piano in the Musee de la Cite
de La Musique and visit the hands that
played that piano (cast of Chopin’s hands)
in the Musee de la Vie Romantique, once a
summer home where Georges Sands and
Chopin spent time together. If you want
to see Georges Sands’ main chateau go
to the Loire Valley to the seldom-visited,
completely furnished Nohant. Visit the
Bank of Tokyo on the Place Vendome to see
the room where Chopin died. And finally,
Chopin’s grave in Pere Lachaise Cemetery.
There are many more great museums:
Baccarat — in the Philippe Starckerestored Vicomtesse Noailles villa. Cite
de L’Architecture (architecture museum
newly restored in 2007 architecture) in
the stunning Art Deco Palais Chaillot. The
Musee Quai Branly (opened 2006). ■
