X PRESS Black Diamond November 2013 Inside this issue: The Columbia Ski Club Why I Am A Member of CSC The Presidenti’s Writing Contest Why I’m a Member of the Columbia Ski Club Athena Dalrymple Just as many people believe you have to be new to Howard County to join Newcomers of Howard County, so do many people believe you have to be a skiier to join and enjoy the Columbia Ski Club, and I am hear to tell people you can believe in Santa Claus, but don't believe in such requirements for joining these clubs, as it just ain't so! I am one of the approximately 30% of people in the CSC who do not ski and love belonging to the group! CSC has an email list called MTS which stands for "More Than Ski," and I participate in many activities through that. Some of the many activities I have enjoyed via MTS include: enjoying hot cocoa and blueberry bagels with jam and strawberry cream cheese before a stimulating pre- and post-talk surrounding interesting movies at Sundays at the Charles arranged by super networker Marge Collins,; enjoying dinner following super hero and other action films at Snowden Square arranged by super Frank Marconi; playing trivia at Union Jack‘s, and mini-golf at courses all around the area followed by dinner out as part of annual mini-golf competitions arranged by champion competitor Chris Law; breakfasts at Mimi's, and delicious chili cook-offs arranged by generous hosts Pat and Rob Foard; happy hours at various bars arranged by different volunteers each time; retirement parties arranged by people who really have been able to retire; annual dessert nights at the beautiful home of gracious hosts Jeannie and Ted Leoutsakos; a terrific pool party at the resort-like home of Pete and Kathie Kunz; go-carting with dinners that follow arranged by my loving, go-getting husband Scott; dinner theatre and birthday celebrations arranged by energetic-enough-to-be-anactress volunteer coordinator Sue Muller; Thanksgiving and Cinco de Mayo dinners at Ravens fan supreme Joyce Wonka's home; Orioles games and bullpen parties arranged by Bird fan Karen Lewis; and so many more fun things, but I am already over my word limit I suspect! From Sunday to Saturday, there are activities going on through CSC, from weekly to annual events to look forward to! CSC is also an organization I have enjoyed planning activities for myself, some of which included a weekend trip to Harpers Ferry, magic show in Baltimore, bowling night with pizza and soda, and murder mystery Why I am a member—cont’d on page 4 Next Meeting: Monday, November 11 DoubleTree Inn Columbia MD 7:30 pm We are still offering a 50% membership discount for first-time members Come early; Happy Hour prices at Morgan‘s starting at 6:30 Linger a while after the meeting; Happy Hour prices continue Columbia Ski Club 1 Athena Dalrymple President’s Corner 2 Executive Committee 2 Committee Chairs 2 Moose Tracks 3 Kaitlyn’s 5th Birthday Dinner / Dance for SIDS 3 Special Events 3 Panzer House Concerts 3 Cinema Sunday at the Charles 3 President’s Writing Contest 4 Get In Shape List 5 Bill Schrodel Fashion Show for November Meeting 5 CSC Night at Princeton Sports 5 BRSC Sanctioned Trips 4 2014 Ski Trip Schedule 6-9 BRSC Sanctioned Trips 7 Preferred Vendors 8 2104 MTS Trip: Iceland 9 Trip Reservation Form 10 Activities 11 www.columbiaskiclub.org Page 2 Executive Committee 2012—2013 President/Director Jim Ferrant 301-514-2378 President-Elect/Director Gary Prestianni 410-799-4253 Directors Denise Berger Joe Brenner Kat Rhee Ron Coté Mike Di Prospero Linda Doolittle 410-730-8476 443-838-8267 410-465-1926 410-707-3308 410-750-2521 Treasurer Alexa Fair 410-465-2966 Secretary John Hubbs 443-280-1892 Committee Chairs Activities Deb & Bob McCune 410-637-5454 Sherry March 410-796-5266 Community Service Sue Muller 301-498-8462 Data Base Deb McCune 310-637-5454 Hospitality Christine Hollis 410-381-5642 Membership Joyce Wronka 410-730-6841 Meetings & Programs Eliezer Richmond 410-578-0324 More Than Ski Molly Hochman 410-721-4407 Newsletter Mario Tinto 301-776-3487 Publicity / Marketing John Hubbs 443-280-1892 Pete Kuntz Social Denise Berger 410-730-8476 Ski Trips Bill Schrodel 410-795-9294 Web Site Marc Chidester Black Diamond X Press P resident‘s C orner The ski season opens this month in the western U.S. Several mountains are already open; watch Twitter and Facebook and stay tuned to the resort updates from Ted ―The Moose‖ Dietz. Our ski trips are more than 80% sold, SIGN UP NOW for a trip. This really becomes your best last opportunity to get on a ski trip. The October Ski Magazine reader‘s poll ranks: Whistler 6th, Big Sky 12th, Snowbird 17th, and Mammoth 14th; in the east, Whiteface and Sunday River are ranked 10th and 11th. If you are wait-listed for a trip and the list is long, my advice is to sign up for another trip now. Our Ski Trip Coordinator and Trip Leaders have begun to drop extra spaces on those trips not yet sold out Last month we had Lauren Bunney, a fitness instructor, give us tips on how to get in shape for the upcoming ski season with some ski-specific exercises. For many of us, that served as a rude awakening on how unprepared we are for the season. Maximize your ski experience —GET IN SHAPE NOW! This month‘s meeting features our annual fashion show, sponsored by Princeton Sports. The fashion show is entertaining and serves as a teaser for CSC Night at Princeton Sports. Long time CSC supporter, Alan Davis, of Princeton Sports invites us from 5-7 p.m. Sunday November 17th to this special night at his Columbia store. The evening will feature specials on ski clothing, skiing and riding gear, discounted custom boot fitting, ski tuning clinics, and complementary beer, wine and food. Save the date for this first CSC Night at Princeton Sports; remember ―CSC MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES‖. If you are in the market for equipment, always consult a local ski shop. While you could buy online and get a better price, you can‘t get the individualized attention and assistance that a knowledgeable ski shop can give you. A better price on the wrong piece of equipment is really not a great deal. Consider bringing your current equipment in for an evaluation by a professional. For those not in the market for new skis, ask yourself the following: Do my skis need to be tuned? Are the edges and bases in good shape? When was the last time they were waxed? Have the bindings release been checked in a few years or since I picked up weight? If you say ―no‖ or don‘t know the answer to any of these questions, you likely need some work done on your skis. Last month I announced a writing contest: ―Why I am a member of the CSC?‖ (alternatively, ―Why they are members of the CSC‖). This is open for all CSC members—both skiers and non-skiers. Check for details in this month‘s newsletter; prizes are Telluride lift tickets or a weekend at Wisp at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland; the winner gets the first choice of prize. This month I want to recognize our Web Team led by Marc Chidester. The team is composed of Marc, Ron Maseda, and Tom Donohue with regular contributions from Gary Prestianni as well as from Bob McCune and Sherry March for activities. This year a concerted effort has been made to upgrade our site based upon our marketing efforts and to keep our web pages current. Our web site gets over 7000 hits a month and the team has been working to ensure that it is our most accurate and best source of information about the activities and news of our club. A special thanks to Marc, the Web Team and all those individuals that participate in maintaining and enhancing CSC‘s key information source all year long. Just point them downhill, Jim Ferrant Social Media Terry McClung Kat Rhee The Black Diamond Xpress is published monthly by the Columbia Ski Club, Inc., a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of the sport of skiing. … and many other activities Commissary Ron Maseda Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org November 2013 Page 3 As I take pen in hand to write this edition of Moose Tracks … okay, I confess I am actually using a word processor so I guess I was just saying that in a literary manner. So if I am not actually writing with a pen does that mean I am illiterate? Hmmmm, the things that wander around in my mind when there is nothing better to think about. But wait! There is something better to think about; skiing snow out West, ski resorts opening already, and the forecast for snow in the Maryland mountains. Now that is something to think about! Did you know that Arapaho Basin and Loveland are open for skiing with two trails and a terrain park at the Basin, and six trails at Loveland? This is actually better than last season. Well over a foot of snow has fallen at these resorts. Other Western resorts will be open by the middle of November. For those that wondered if we could really return to skiing in the East, we have done it thanks to brisk sales by our team of East Coast trip leaders. You just can‘t beat the affordability of East coast ski trips and it was obviously something we needed to get back to. Only a few spaces remain on these trips! You will need something fashionable and warm to wear on your ski trip and what better way to see all the latest in high tech clothing than to come to our Fashion Show at our November meeting. There will be music, lights, a talking moose, and of course, the CSC Super Models. Our November meeting on the eleventh is Veterans Day; don‘t forget to thank a veteran for the freedoms that you enjoy. Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org Page 4 Black Diamond X Press Why I am a member—cont’d from pg 1 dinner at Greek restaurant Ikaros using Groupon and Living Social deals. What is the best part of belonging to CSC? Having a second family who has been there in good times and bad. I lost two parents within a year and some members drove all the way down to Silver Spring to attend my father's wake and all the way up to Sykesville to attend my step-mother's memorial service, and several members also bought flowers to express their sympathy, with Eli Conner even shocking us by generously providing four beautiful floral arrangements that were used for both the stage at the service, and tables at the reception that followed. People at CSC have warm hearts. I feel lucky to be a part of the group and give thanks to the many members who for some time kept suggesting I join. People do others a service when they get friends to join, and thus I have also encouraged my friends and my brother to join and am happy several of them have taken me up on the suggestion. If you are reading this and aren't a member yet, join now! Membership is half price for brand new members for the first time ever this year, and this might not be repeated next year! So in summation, why am I a member of CSC? Because it's good for me and I hope I am also helping to bring a bit of sunshine into the lives of others in the club. I welcome opportunities to help others smile and if you do, too, become a member! Athena Dalrymple The President‘s Writing Contest Win Lift Tickets for Telluride The President is sponsoring a writing contest, with the theme ―Why I am a member of the CSC‖ (alternatively, ―Why they are members of the CSC‖). Columbia Ski Club www.columbiaskiclub.org November 2013 Page 5 Forget the packing list. What about the Get-In-Shape list ? It‘s that time of the year to start to think about the upcoming ski season. Resorts out west are counting down the days ‗til opening, and Facebook has tons of resorts showing the first signs of snowfall in the higher elevations. Now reflect back on last ski season and then think back on the first ski trips you went on. How many of you came to the realization that you needed to get in shape to ski, really? How many days, weeks or months do you have to spend getting ready to ski out west? For me the experience at Highland Bowl at 11,500 feet and hiking up an additional 800 feet with my skis strapped to my back and navigating the ridge line as I sucked air was an eye-opener. Especially as the young, and even not-so-youthful ladies marched by saying ―oh, this is my third time up today‖. It made me say ―next year I am going to be in better shape for the ski season.‖ To this end, there were a large group of us at the ―Sea Gull Century‖ bike ride on October 5 th. In preparation, I biked 1,100 miles this summer and did both the ―Bay to Bay‖ 77-mile and ―Bike to See‖ 100-mile rides to supplement my training. Last year I did the Metric Century ride and was very excited to do the full Century ride this year. Bruce, Dave, and Tom met me at the start of the race for a photo opportunity and we met up at the rest stops, while Joan and Tom rode alongside of me throughout the event. Having biked all summer and completed the Sea Gull Century less than two weeks ago, I thought I was in really good shape. Well, not really. At this month‘s meeting, Lauren Bunney of Arsenal Fitness did a demonstration of ―Functional Training‖ that simulated your skiing actions. We did 3 sets of 10 repetitions each of squats, modified push-ups, and lunges that took us, maybe, 10 to 15 minutes in total. Guess what? I hurt more after this short exercise than after 6 hours and 15 minutes on the Sea Gull Century. The moral here is that you have to do the exercises that most simulate the physical activity you will do on the mountain as you prepare for the ski season. That‘s why they call it ―Functional Training‖. So here‘s my take-away. It‘s not too late to get out, walk, run, do some air squats, lunges, and pushups now. The dividends are well worth the extra time you will enjoy on the mountain in this sport we all love. Who knows, your doctor may say, ―hey, what have you done that has gotten your HDL up to goal?‖ Tell a friend to check out our ski schedule. We have some great trips and openings on Whistler, Mammoth, White Face, Sunday River, Cortina, and Snowbird.
