some men of t h e 1st Texas Mounted R i f l e s became members o f t h e
1st Mounted V o l u n t e e r s ( 1 2 months) u n d e r C o l e John C o f f e e Hays.
Many had s c o u t e d w i t h him as members of r a n g i n g companies formed t o
p r o t e c t t h e f r o n t i e r s o f Texas a g a i n s t marauding I n d i a n s , and cont i n u e d t o l i v e up t o t h e i r r e p u t a t i o n as " w i l d Texas Rangers."
T h i n k i n g t h a t r e a d e r s would b e i n t e r e s t e d i n knowing how many
