Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends
Welcome to Term 2 2016!! Our feet hit the ground
running on Monday morning and they will not stop
running till the end of Week 11!
What will Term 2 bring apart from the annual
inter-house athletics carnival, Under 8’s Day,
report cards, Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN testing, Biloela
Show Holiday, Biloela Eisteddfod, ANZAC Day?
There will also be P&C meetings, visits from Sensei
Reiko, professional development, Readers’ Cup,
work experience student, pre-service teachers
completing their pracs. Late May will also see us
have a school review with a team of reviewers
visiting the school for three days, but more
information about this in future newsletters.
Of course our most important activity for the term
is TEACHING AND LEARNING! Our improvement
agenda will continue to focus on Maths – number
facts and proficiency strands, Reading –
In order to keep up to date with what is happening
at school, please ensure you read every newsletter
and mark on your calendars when things are
happening. Attending P&C meetings is another
way to keep informed about school happenings.
The start of the new term sees a name change for
two of our classroom teachers as they enjoyed their
special days during the school break. A special
welcome back to Mrs Vonhoff and Mrs Baker as our
Prep F and 2M class teachers, and congratulations!
Best wishes are extended to the 10-12 year old
students who are participating in the DV Cross
Country trials at Bauhinia SS tomorrow. Do your
best and enjoy the experience!
Best wishes are also extended to Jared Clark as he
heads to Gladstone on Sunday/Monday for the
Capricornia Soccer trials, and to Mitchell Morris
and Noah Saxby as they participate in the
Capricornia trials for AFL in Moranbah on Monday.
IMPROVEMENT AGENDA PROGRESS
Improvement figures thus far for the year in our
improvement agenda areas are as follows:
“Striving for great things”
Page 1
Reading: All classes have specific reading lessons
at least 3 times per week with Year 4-6 classes also
introducing reading group times.
Writing: Based on the narrative sample collected
at the end of Term 1, 52% of our Year 1-3 students
are already achieving above the relevant Semester
1 mean scale score benchmark for their respective
year level. Better still, 35 of our Year 4-6 students
made gains in their mean scale score between the
narrative sample collected in Term 3 2015
compared to the narrative sample collected in
Term 1 2016. 19 of those same students gained
over 100 points in their mean scale scores!!
Congratulations to all teachers, students and
support staff for your great efforts with writing!

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
A big thank you to parents and teachers who have
taken the opportunity this week to meet or chat
with each other about student learning. These
have made a difference with the students’ progress.
Parents are welcome to meet with teachers to have
a chat about their child’s learning at any time
throughout the term (and vice versa).
Appointments are to be made through the school
Office staff.
Bronze Certificates: Bronze certificates were
awarded to 181 of our Year 1-6 students who had 7
weeks in Term 1 of being safe, responsible,
courteous and learning. That is 82% of our
students, and….the best part was that 100% of the
Year 6 cohort received their bronze certificate –
TOP EFFORT!

MATHS CORNER
During Term 1, Moura State School embarked on a
journey to improve our mental computation skills
by developing a greater understanding about the
mental strategies we use to help us work out
operations. Already this term, we have seen some
classes almost double their initial results in
addition. Our teachers worked very hard during
the first term on addition and subtraction and will
focus this term on our upper school getting to work
on becoming more fluent in our multiplication and
division problems.
Traditionally
most
adults have been
taught to practise
times
tables
by
writing a list of
equations, such as
the list shown here.
RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS
However, research tells us that understanding
multiplication facts has more to do with identifying
arrays and regions, as they help young minds
develop a better visual understanding of the
relationship between related facts and the
connections to perimeter and area. For example,
when we think of 3 x 6, we can see it as double 6,
plus one more group of 6. The Region model also
help us see the relationship between two
operations. Ie 3 x 6 is the same as 6 x 3, which
reduces the amount of facts we need to remember
by almost half. Using a multiplication grid, such as
the one shown below also helps us see this
relationship. We look forward to building our skills
in these areas further during term 2!

Show your support for students with autism in
April
Do you know that there are more than 12,000
students with autism enrolled in Queensland state
schools?
April is Autism Awareness Month and our school is
committed to working with families and services to
support students with autism and ensure that they
get
the
best
possible
start
in
life.
This year the Queensland Government launched
Australia’s first Autism Hub to provide students with
autism, their families and schools across the state
with
more
support.
Located in Brisbane, the $2 million centre offers
expert advice, training and resources to parents,
educators and health professionals. Seven regional
autism coaches have also been appointed, ensuring
professional support is available statewide.

Reminder to be safe when travelling on or near
buses
With another school term underway, we’d like to
remind all students and parents to please be safe
when
travelling
on
or
near
buses.
A significant number of school students in
Queensland travel on buses to attend school. All
students have the right to a safe and enjoyable
journey, and their safety is our number one priority.
Ensuring students safe travel on or near buses is a
shared responsibility which brings together the
efforts of students, their parents/carers, schools, bus
drivers and bus operators. When travelling on or
near a bus, there are some safety tips you should
follow
to
ensure
a
safe
journey

parents/carers with information about how to travel
safely on buses. To view the code and more

CHAPPY NEWS
Hi Everyone!
My name is Chloe Bader and I am the School
Chaplain here at Moura State School. I will be here
at school on Mondays and Tuesdays. I will be
supporting students and staff at Theodore SS on
Thursdays and Fridays.
A little bit about myself: I moved to Moura from the
big smoke of Brisbane. I am originally from
Christchurch, New Zealand. I moved to Australia
when I was 15 years old and love it here.
As a School Chaplain I am here to provide social,
emotional and spiritual support to students,
parents and staff. Also to run programs that focus
on the needs of the students. I will be helping out
with Homework Club on Monday afternoon and
helping out with Breakfast Club on Monday
mornings too.
This term I am planning to do some great fun arts
and crafts with the students during the lunch
breaks. This week we started making sock puppets.
The students have had fun making them and
putting on puppet shows. All the socks were
donated from family and friends in Brisbane. In a
couple of weeks I plan to do Mother’s Day cards
with the students.
Bus Families
Please notify the office if you know your child
will not be on the bus certain afternoons
through the week so we can update our bus
rolls.
