Centre’s 20th birthday:
Be first-ever winner of
pie-making contest
WHY NOT COOK up a storm in
your kitchen and enter North Arm
Cove Community Centre
Management Committee’s inaugural
pie-making competition?
(An entry form and Conditions of
Entry appear on page 12.)
The competition is part of the
community centre’s FREE 20th
birthday celebrations to be held
October 16, 2016 commencing
at 12 noon.
‘Make your own pastry/pie, enter
the competition and be the inaugural
winner of our first-ever pie-making
competition, suggests acting centre
chairperson Moira Hooper.
‘We are awarding a prize for the
best savoury and sweet pie,’ Moira
told Cove News.
The committee is ineligible to
enter the competition as they will be
carrying out the judging.
This competition is only one part
of a terrific afternoon of celebration,
with a free lunch plus
entertainment by local popular
musical group Sage.
State MP Kate Washington has
accepted an invitation to attend as
well as community centre volunteers,
past and present.
The building was handed to the
community by North Arn Cove
Progress Association (now NACRA)
on October 12, 1996 and has been
under the care of the S355
Committee of Management
comprising local residents since
July, 1996.
The committee are also hoping the
industrial pass-through dishwasher
will be operational in time for the
party. This purchase was made
possible by a successful 2015
Volunteer grant funding application.
The committee will be holding
their annual Melbourne Cup Day
celebrations on Tuesday, November 1
commencing at 11am; and are
looking at conducting a pre-Christmas
bus trip to Sydney.
In the meantime, on with the piemaking and the party!
The community centre is celebrating
it’s 20th birthday and you are invited

Cove News - October 2016
If you have a ‘family favourite’ recipe you would like
to share with Cove News’ readers, please email
[email protected]
This month’s ‘tried and true ‘recipe is from Sue
Anderson, who has made this cheese cake for a long
time and delighted fellow-book club members serving it
for supper after a recent meeting.
Lemon Cheese Cake
Serves 4 but can be doubled
Ingredients for the cake: 1
cup SR flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 125g
butter, 1 beaten egg.
Sauce: 1 dessert spoon lemon rind,
3 tabs lemon juice, 1 beaten egg,
1/4 cup sugar 125g butter.
Method: Place flour, sugar, butter
and egg in a food processor and
blend. Put three-quarters of the
mixture into the base of a 7” (20 cm)
cake tin pushing it up at the sides.
Stir the sauce mix over a low heat
until thick and boiling.
Pour the sauce over the base and
drop remaining cake mixture in blobs
on top.
Bake for about 30 mins in a
moderate oven and let it cool before
turning out of tin.

Writers’ Smartie award night
ESTABLISHED in 2014,
by writer Garry Boyd,
the ‘Golden Smartie’
trophy is a humorous
writing trophy competed
for by North Arm Cove
Fellowship of
Australian Writers
(FAW) members
annually.
Moira Hooper and
Olly Griffin 2014 and
2015 winners
respectively.
The theme for this
year was ‘gambling.’

laughter. A secret ballot was held to select the
eventual winner - Bob Bush. (pictured right).
He was presented with the perpetual trophy by
Garry Boyd. The trophy remains in the
community library; Bob also receives a replica.
Boxes of Smarties were also handed out..
Members then continued their evening of
writing with a workshop given by FAW State vice president/president Port
Macquarie FAW, author and publisher Colleen Parker (pictured).
The workshop gave members information about work assessment,
copyedit, structural edit, peer-editors always commending, recommending
and lastly, commending.
A story was assessed with Colleen asking what made it a good story,
what aspects may not have made the story good?
The workshop concluded with a short tutorial on Travel writing, after
which Colleen was presented with a gift from members as a ‘thank you’ for
a very informative workshop.

Carrots
EATING PLENTY OF
carrots can help towards
cancer prevention. Interestingly
consuming leftover
carrots can even increase
this health benefit.
Not only does the
cooking process
immediately increase a
carrot’s level of antioxidants those levels keep
rising for a few days
afterwards.
So eat them as leftovers
and they will be even
better for you.
It doesn’t matter which
cooking method you use

NOT JUST TO MAKE YOUR

the antioxidant levels will
rise regardless.
If boiling carrots for the
first time, a good tip is to
leave them whole and chop
them later. They will contain
25 per cent more falcinol, a
compound with anti-cancer
properties, than carrots that
are chopped before boiling.

YESS: Thanks to the cove
We do it all!
BY Wilma Greenway
IN 2013 A group of five North Arm
Cove women met to discuss how best
to utilise the very generous donation
of a framed Collector’s print depicting
Australian cricketing heroes.
The outcome of this discussion
was a raffle would be conducted, the
proceeds used to benefit the children
of North Arm Cove.
Each cove child
entering their first
year at high school
would receive a oneoff award of $100
toward their chosen
high school sporting
activity.
From this meeting the ‘seed’
was planted and the Youth
Encouragement Sport Support;
(YESS) project evolved.
It has proved an outstanding success
thanks to the enthusiastic response
from the cove community and we
have decided to continue the YESS
project.
Our aim is to hold one function,
possibly two, annually and use any
funds we have accumulated from our
various fundraising to promote and
encourage any sporting endeavours
undertaken by selected cove children.
We do have in mind contributing
towards playground equipment and
other sport-related facilities, ie cricket
pitch/nets, cycle track and climbing
equipment.
These are long-
term aims, as we are
mindful of the ‘red
tape’ and cost
involved.
We intend to
promote and
support other
organisers for the
cove’s 2017 Australia Day celebration
at Heros Beach. The YESS
committee will contribute towards
the day by funding the supply of ice
blocks, drinks and, perhaps, a sausage
sizzle. More details in future Cove
News.
We hope you will continue to
support the YESS Project. We, the
committee - Joan, Wilma, Annette,
Robyn and Mo - thank you all for
your marvellous acceptance of YESS.

to contribute to
future cove
sports facilities’

Live theatre at Hawks Nest: No matinee at
cove this year
THE AUTHOR OF the
comedy, ‘Just Do The Best You
Can’, Myall Coast Entertainers
(MCE) 2016 production, hopes
that it will bring out a lot of
emotions in different people.
The play may be a bit
confronting for some, and
may evoke different feelings
and emotions for others,
according to Allan Wilson,
President of MCE. This play will hopefully
include humour, fun, love, wit,
sadness, naughtiness, and even
controversy.
Allan recalls a verse in a
Hollies’ song with the same
title as this play:
Win again, lose again.
Don’t feel sad when things go bad.
You just do the best you can.
Do the best you can.
Finally, people may wish to bring
a hanky to wipe their tears of joy,
laughter and happiness.
The comedy will be performed at
the Hawks Nest Community only
this year - no Saturday matinee
at the cove.
Opening night, October 12, is sold
out, however, tickets are available
for Thursday, October 13-Saturday.

Setting up a New Printer Printers
When setting up a new printer it is important that you
DON’T plug in the USB cable until the software tells
you to.
When you install the software it will get to a stage and
say ‘NOW plug in your printer’ and won’t go any further
until it detects the printer.
If connecting by Wi-Fi, setup the Wi-Fi on the printer
to connect it to your modem first, using buttons on
printer then install the software.
I am surprised by people thinking you just plug in the
printer and it will install itself. This will rarely work,
although Windows 10 has more chance then previous
versions of Windows.
If you don’t have the disc for the printer DON’T
search the internet for a suitable driver. Go directly to
the manufacturer’s web site. On each site there will be a
driver / support section for you to download.
These are the correct websites.

the Fermentation Fest
WESTERN DIETS WITH high
sugar, fat and wheat content are
responsible for poor gut health.
Fermented food has been used
by all cultures and with the reemergence of popularity of these
foods North Arm Cove
Community Gardeners are
holding a Fermentation Fest.
The Fest will feature
demonstrations including
sauerkraut, cheese, sourdough,
Kimchee, Kaffir and Kambucha

started with fermentation of foods
and drinks and will be held
Saturday, October 22, 2016 from

ANYONE CONTEMPLATING
VISITING Broken Hill?
‘Now is the time to do it,’ is the
opinion of Cove Boulevarde’s
Colin and Joan Williams who
returned from their 35th visit to
‘The Hill’ September 20, 2016.
They said the countryside is
magnificent, and the best they
have seen it.
Joan taught there as a P.E.
teacher 1955/56. Colin grew up
and did his schooling in Broken
Hill.
This visit was to attend the
Golden Oldies’, a reunion of exBroken Hill High School students
held every year at this time.
There were four other students
of Colin’s 1st year high school
class of 71 years ago in
attendance.
Joan and Colin had a great time
with old friends, revisiting old
haunts and seeing the
countryside at its very best.
