Museum. The hotel is also within the
region of Cumberland Gap National
Historical Park, Wasioto Winds Golf
Course and Pine Mountain State
Park.
The hotel, owned by Jay Shoffner
and Sammie Mars, has been an award
winning hotel every year since it
opened in October 2010.
The Middlesboro Sleep Inn has
always been within the top 3 percent
of the chain. For the last two consecutive years, the Middlesboro Sleep
Inn has been ranked as one of the
top three Sleep Inns throughout the
nation. Additionally, the Middlesboro
Sleep Inn has being nominated for Inn
of the Year.
Some of the amenities at the
Middlesboro Sleep Inn are a full complimentary hot breakfast bar daily
and fresh baked cookies at night.
Additionally, guest have access to
the motel’s fitness center, guest laundry, free high speed internet and a
fully stocked business center which
includes computer/printer/copier/
scanner access as well as basic office
supplies such as paper, pens, paper
clips and staplers.
The motel offers 24-hour check-in.
Check-in starts at 3 p.m. and checkout time is 11 a.m. Connecting/adjoining rooms are available upon request
and free cribs/infant beds are free of

The Sleep Inn’s newest amenity is

better here.” Their promise to their
guest is that they will feel well-rested
and happy by staying at a Sleep Inn
hotel. So we greet each guest with
a smile and make them a part of our
family.
In order to qualify for the top 3 percent, all hotels are ranked by Choice
Hotels International based on guest
surveys, property inspections and
complaints per thousand responses.
All of the Middlesboro Sleep Inn
guests are surveyed on their likelihood to return, staff service, cleanliness and overall condition of the
rooms.
All of this information is compiled
by Choice Hotels and each hotel
receives a ranking with 365 days
worth of information figured in. The
top three hotels are the three hotels
with the highest yearly score and only
those hotels are nominated to be Inn
of the year. The actual Inn of the Year
winner is chosen from those three by
the Choice Hotels Owners Council
and Sleep Inn’s brand leadership.
Simply being nominated is a very
prestigious recognition and the
Middlesboro Sleep Inn is proud of
their staff for providing such excellent
service to their guests. Their goal is
to win Inn of the Year so they are continuously working hard to stay in the
top three.
Bell County Fair
The Bell County Fair has progressed
into one of the biggest events in the
county as organizers strive to improve
the event from year-to-year. In addition
to carnival rides, rodeos and tractor
pulls — the fair offers live entertainment
every year. Past performers include local
artists the Nate Cornett Band and Tim
Goodin alongside country stars Eric Pasley, John Anderson, Halfway to Hazard
and Sammy Kershaw. Recent improvements to the fairgrounds include a paved
walkway, parking lots and a playground
area for children. Additions to the fair
include a new segment called “Battle of
the Bands,” featuring local musical acts
competing to win money and a zipline.
All carnival rides and the ziplines are
included in the price of admission.

Discovering Downtown
to make downtown Middlesborough the center of the
economic, civic, and social
life of the Tri-State area.
Beautifully restored historic buildings and clean and
attractive public spaces have
made Downtown Middlesborough a leading regional
and statewide attraction. A
world class hiking, biking,
and horse trail system draws
people downtown and connects with Cumberland Gap
National Historical Park. A
wide variety of shops and
restaurants provide everything from daily necessities
and a quick and inexpensive
meal, to higher-end goods,
services, and fine dining all
at locally-owned businesses.
People travel from miles
around to be part of the fun
and excitement downtown
has to provide.
DDM gives details of historic downtown buildings:
American
Association Building
This building served as
headquarters for the American Association from 1891
until the 1950s. The building
was badly damaged by a fire
in 1997. Later the building
was restored. Today artifacts
are on display recognizing

INSIDER GUIDE
Discover Downtown Middlesboro is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was
founded in 2004. Since that
time the organization has
worked to spearhead revitalization of the downtown area.
The group has accomplished
the revitalization through
coordinating grassroots
action by volunteers on four
committees - Organization,
Promotion, Design, and Economic Restructuring. Some
recent DDM projects include
organizing the Christmas
Parade and decoration of
the downtown, addition of
four fountains and seating
at Cumberland Avenue and
20th Street, and encouraging the restoration of several
buildings downtown.
According to their website,
www.downtownmiddlesboro.
org, the mission of Discover
Downtown Middlesboro
(DDM) is to encourage
citizen participation in the
revitalization of Cumberland Avenue between 10th
and 24th Street and several
mixed-use walkable blocks
to the north and south. The
group also seeks to improve
the physical appearance of
the downtown while maintaining its historic integrity;
to retain existing businesses
and to attract new ones; and
Alexander Arthur and his
role founding Middlesboro.
Bell County Tourism have
their office and visitors center here. The museum and
Victorian Garden are open to
the public.
Historic Canal Walk
The Canal was built
between 1889 and 1891 to
provide drainage for the city.
Italian workmen undertook
the construction. Originally the canal was lined
with wooden planks of which
a few can still be found. A
paved Canal Walk is open to
the public.
Centennial Park
and Veterans Wall
At 21st Street between the
Centennial Park and City
Hall are memorials with the
names of veterans from the
Korean War, Vietnam, and
Desert Storm. Also along the
wall are panels describing the
history of Middlesborough.
These were erected to commemorate the city’s centennial in the 1990s.
Coal House and
Coal Museum
The Coal House was built
in 1926, utilizing 42 tons
of bituminous coal taken
from mines in our area. The
Bell County Chamber of
Commerce has their offices
there today. Next to it is an
outdoor museum showcasing
mining tools and equipment.

This Classical Revival
building was constructed
in 1915. The façade has the
appearance of a Classical
Greek temple. Eight Doric
columns with fluting are
enframed within the front
wall. A decorative frieze rests
atop the columns.
Bell County
Historical Society
and Museum
This building was originally a Carnegie Library built
in 1912. Today the museum
here has exhibits from all
periods of the area’s past.
Special exhibits showcase the
meteor crater, life in Appalachia, the Victorian era, the
birth of ragtime music, hometown boy and TV movie star
Lee Majors, and local industries and businesses. The
museum also has a research
library with an emphasis on
local history and genealogy.
Exhibition Hall
and Library
Built in 1889 by the American Association, Ltd., to
showcase the natural resources of the area, it later served
as a high school and now
houses the Masonic Hall.
First Presbyterian
Church
In August 1889, the Presbyterian Congregation was
the first to build in Middlesboro. The original church on
this same lot was replaced by
this building in 1912.
St. Mary’s
Episcopal Church
This is one of the finest
examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture in the U.S.
The cornerstone was laid
in 1890 and the church was
dedicated on February 11,
1891. The design is based
on blueprints of St. Mary’s
Church in Middlesbrough,
England. Alexander Arthur
once attended church here.
Gifts from British founders
and descendants on Easter
1891 included a Tiffanydesigned stained glass window, hand-carved eagle lectern and brass Communion
rail. Listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Edgewood Court
(Site of The
Middlesborough
Hotel)
A fine four story high hotel
was built here in 1889 and
enlarged in 1890. The main
porch faced east and had
excellent views of Cumberland Gap. Other buildings
included hitching shed and
service buildings to the west.
The hotel had an annex
called the Occonita Club that
was reached by a “skyway”
built over Edgewood Road.
While many of these buildings are long gone, portions
of their foundations remain.
Harvey Lee
Yeary Home
Boyhood home of Harvey
Lee Yeary, known to his
TV and movie fans as Lee
Majors.
Colonel Arthur
Campbell Grave
Colonel Arthur Campbell
fought in the Revolutionary
War. Later he had an illustrious career as a soldier, statesman, and planter. Campbell
died in 1811. His two sons
John and James died in the
War of 1812.
A.D. Campbell’s
This building is an excellent example of late 19th cen-
tury commercial architecture
and one of the only buildings
downtown with an original
storefront. The A.D. Campbell’s clothing store has been
in business at this location
since 1889.
Adams Building
Built in 1890, this building
originally housed the Palace
Saloon. After the town went
dry in 1915, this became a
men’s store.
Site of
Manring Theater
A movie palace was once
located on the northeast corner of 21st St and Cumberland Ave where the doctor’s
office is located today. People
would come far and wide to
visit. Part of the terra cotta
façade still remains. Look
closely and try to find it!

Central Block
This Victorian Romanesque building has roughfinished stone coursing and
terra cotta tile. The building
is organized into five bays
with a central entrance and
piers that go through roof
level. Similar piers are to
either side. Fanciful sunburst
windows over round arched
windows have great preservation potential.
Benevolent and
Protective Order
of Elks Home
Originally built as an Elks
Home, ca. 1911, it later
became a hospital during the
flu epidemic of 1919. Hospital use continued until 1956.
Several floors had residential
use as late as the 1980s.
Today work is underway to
preserve the building.

Park Theater
O.G. Roaden opened the
Park Theatre in October
1947. William Price Coomer
had taken over ownership by
1953. David Pitts, an evangelist from Louisville, began
holding religious services for
his “Calvary Temple Church”
here starting in the 1960s.
By the 1970s the Park was
in trouble. A classified ad in
the April 20, 1974, Middlesboro Daily News listed 200
“theater type seats for sale at
$1 apiece. The Jaycees continued to manage the theater
for a few years more before it
was closed altogether around
the time of the opening of
the Middlesboro Mall.
St. Julian’s
Catholic Church
The Middlesborough Town
Company conveyed a lot to
the Catholic pastor in Jellico, Tennessee, on July 10,
1889. The first Mass was celebrated on North 10th Street
in May 1890. By 1892 this
location proved inadequate,
so the church deeded back
their lot to the Town Company in exchange for their
present location on Chester
Ave between 18th and 19th
Street.
Arthur Building
Built in 1890 by the
founder of Middlesborough,
it has a crest designed by the
Arthur family over the door.
During the “boom” era, the
lot sold for more than a comparable lot cost in downtown
Manhattan.
Weinstein Building
Built in 1906, this housed
one of many mercantile businesses started by the large
Jewish population that immigrated to Middlesborough in
its “boom” days. The building served as a department
store for many years and was
a J.C. Penney’s at one time.
19th Street
From the 1930s to 1950s
when Middlesborough was
“wide open,” this street was
lined by saloons, dance halls
and similar activities. Even
the grocery stores on this
street sported slot machines.
Mt. Moriah
A.M.E. Church
This African-American
congregation was organized
in 1889. The present church
was built in 1910. Further
renovations were made in
1921.
Boone Trace
Daniel Boone passed
through this way on his journey westward in 1775. After
crossing the Yellow Creek
near the present-day location
of Kentucky Fried Chicken,
he is thought to have passed
through this area. A portion of the Wilderness Road
remains at the end of 17th
Street on the east side of the
railroad track.
1938 WPA Bridge
The Works Progress
Administration was a Federal
program during the Great
Depression designed to provide jobs and make public
improvements. A concrete
bridge south of Ashbury
St east of 17th St has the
inscription “W.P.A. 1938.”

In 1965 the school closed
and was demolished. Today
this is the Old Lincoln High
School Park.

Middlesborough
Cemetery
J.R. Hoe & Sons
Middlesboro
Tannery
This hilltop cemetery with
commanding views of the
Cumberland Gap is the burial
place of Alexander Arthur
and many of the town’s earliest settlers.
One of the city’s original
industries, the Pioneer Iron
Works, originated at this
location. The company was
bought by the Hoe family
and has continued to be operated by members of the family for over 100 years. This is
one of only a few foundries
remaining nationally still
doing custom iron work.
Coal Tipple
Here coal from area mines
is unloaded from trucks into
railroad cars.
Colson House
This is a brick structure
that was originally constructed around 1800. When
built the house faced the
Wilderness Road that passed
through Middlesboro. At
some later time the brick was
covered in stucco and a front
porch added.
When it was built in 1890,
it was one of the largest tanneries in the world. Fires
have since taken most of the
buildings.
Middlesborough
Country Club
Founded in 1889, this ninehole golf course is claimed
to be the oldest continuously
played course in the United
States. This semi-private club
today has a pro-shop, concessions, and club and cart
rentals.
Southeast Kentucky
Community and
Technical College
This college dates back to
1960 when the Southeast
Center of the University
of Kentucky started. The
Middlesboro campus was
established in 1995.
Middlesborough
Airport
This airport has a 3,650
foot runway that was built in
1921. It is the second oldest
airport in Kentucky. At one
time it was the home of the
P-38 “Glacier Girl” that was
recovered from Greenland
from under 268 feet of ice,
brought to Middlesboro, and
fully restored.
Jewish Cemetery
Middlesborough once had
a sizeable Jewish population.
After the initial boom passed,
many members of the Jewish
community decided to stay
on. Members of families by
the names of Horr, Ginsberg,
Euster, Goodfriend and
many others lived, worked,
and were eventually buried
in Middlesboro. Famous
among these was Jack Zuta
who immigrated from Russia between 1903 and 1905.
Zuta was involved with several saloons in Middlesboro.
After the town went dry in
1915 he moved to Chicago.
As he gained influence there,
he became known as Al
Capone’s arch-rival. He was
gunned down gangland style
at the Lake View Resort
Hotel near Delafield, Wisconsin. His body was brought
back to Middlesborough and
buried in the Jewish Cemetery.
Cumberland
Gap National
Historical Park
The “Gap” is an 800 foot
deep natural break in the
Cumberland Mountains.
Native Americans passed
through on a trail called Warriors Path. Later pioneers
led by Daniel Boone marked
out the trail that became the
Wilderness Road. More than
300,000 pioneers traveled
the “Gateway to the West”
between 1775 and 1810.
Visitors can walk through the
actual Gap opened in spring
of 2002 after creation of the
Cumberland Gap Tunnel and
restoration of the road.
Cumberland Manor
Bed & Breakfast
The Carey-Easton Home
was built during the initial
boom period. Tudor detailing
on the front facade is distinctively English in appearance. A Craftsman style
brick porch was added in the
early 1900s. The interior has
ample rooms on the ground
floor with beautiful wood
molding and other decorative
features including stained
glass, fireplaces, and extensive historical antiques and
furnishings. Today this is the
Cumberland Manor Bed and
Breakfast.

provides the perfect place for an
outdoor wedding or large gettogether.
For those who can’t get

he traveled to Fort Boonesborough in the late 1700s.
The fort was recreated in
2002 by a group of dedicated
volunteers and park staff
employing the same tools of
the trade and methods that
would have been used more
than 300 years ago including hand hewn logs, adzes,
horses and a team of oxen.
Reenactors are especially
active in the fort during
mid-May for the Raid at
Martins Station. The smell
of gunpowder fills the air as
volunteers help to depict life
on the frontier.
“We have the most authentically recreated fort in the
nation. Virginia’s 1770s really
come to life with costumed
interpreters and living histo-
rians providing period correct programming and demonstrations,” said Wilderness
Road State Park manager
Scott Bowen.
Several miles of hiking
trails are offered for the avid
hiker to the most basic beginner, but all the trails offer
a beautiful panoramic view
of the mountains with well
maintained walking paths.
Also available are ranger-led
tours which will educate hikers about topics ranging from
edible mushrooms to wilderness medicine.
Adjacent to the park visitors center is Karlan Mansion, which can be rented as
a beautiful setting for weddings or family get-togethers.

Kingdom Come State Park,
with an elevation of 2,700
feet, is the crowning jewel
in the crest of Pine Mountain. Named after the popular Civil War novel, “The
Little Shepherd of Kingdom
Come,” by Kentucky author
John Fox Jr., the park
preserves 1,283 acres of
unspoiled wilderness in the
Cumberland area of Harlan
County.
Some of the most extraordinary rock formations in
the state are featured at this
park, including Log Rock,
a natural sandstone bridge,
and Raven Rock, a giant rock
exposure that soars 290 feet
into the air at a 45-degree
angle.
In the park you will find
four mountain top overlooks
that give visitors stunning
vistas of Black Mountain and
the Cumberland Plateau.
You’ll also have access to
the 38-mile Little Shepherd
Trail that spines along the
top of the mountain from
Harlan to Whitesburg.
There are 14 hiking trails
that explore massive rock
formations and fragile mountain ecosystems. The park
has two large picnic shelters,
with grills and restrooms,
which can be reserved for
your special occasions.
There is primitive camping available year-round. For
groups needing a natural
setting for meetings, the park
offers a cave amphitheater
with lighting and seating.
Visitors will enjoy a 3.5
acre fishing lake, pedal boats,
miniature golf, large recreation areas along with a gift
shop.
Kingdom Come’s overlooks
are the highest and most
numerous in the state park
system. The park offers five

and beneath the visitor’s feet
is an incredible landscape of
weathered, sculpted rock.
The 14 hiking trails that
crisscross nearly 5 miles of
rugged mountain terrain
provide the opportunity
to explore the park’s giant
rock formations and scenic
overlooks. All of the trails are
fairly short in length (1/8-7/8
mile), but many trail routes
may be combined for hikes of
varying lengths and difficulty.
If you are looking for offroad and mountain biking
adventure, the park is an
access point for the Little
Shepherd Trail, a 38-mile
narrow road on top of Pine
Mountain. The trail, or KY

edge of Pine Mountain’s crest
from the intersection of U.S.

You can also enjoy paddleboating around the lake during the summer months.

Blanton Forest
an adventure in the outdoors
[email protected]
Located in Harlan County with 3,124
acres, the Blanton Forest State Nature
Preserve is open to the public year round
during daylight hours and is limited to
foot travel only.
Purchased with assistance from the
Kentucky Natural Lands Trust, Kentucky
Heritage Land Conservation Fund, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency and
KSNPC, on Sept. 15, 1995, 1,075 acres
of the south face of Pine Mountain were
dedicated, protecting half of the largest
old-growth forest in Kentucky.
The preserve has grown with additions
in 1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005
and 2007, all on the south face of the
mountain. Its first addition on the north
face was dedicated in December 2007.
Today, Blanton Forest State Nature Pre-
serve protects 3,124 acres of old-growth
and second-growth forests. As one of 13
large old-growth tracts remaining in the
eastern United States, Blanton Forest is
a diverse ecological treasure. Many of
the trees are 3 feet to 4 feet in diameter,
towering 100 feet above the forest floor.
Several trees have been dated to the late
1600s. Blanton Forest contains several
forest communities, including mountaintop wetlands known as acid seeps
and mixed-mesophytic deciduous forest.
Many tree species such as sugar maple,
tulip poplar, various oaks, hemlocks,
beech and several magnolias make up the
forest canopy.
A trail system approximately 4.5 miles
in length is open for public use. The
main trail consists of two loops leading
to points of interest on the south face
of Pine Mountain. The first loop is a
moderately strenuous trail leading to a

the surrounding forest. The more strenuous loop to Sand Cave and the Maze
takes visitors higher into the Watts Creek

on the time of year, visitors can expect
to see a wide range of wildlife and plant
species within the largest old-growth forest in the Commonwealth. In addition, a
shorter half-mile trail leading along Watts
Creek offers a scenic but less strenuous
alternative route to enjoy the preserve.
Designated parking is available in a
lot adjacent to Camp Blanton, a private
facility. A kiosk and signs direct visitors
to the trailhead. The preserve is open
year round during daylight hours and is
limited to foot travel only.

Black Mountain
off-road adventure area, zip line
One of the top destinations in Harlan County is the
Black Mountain Off-Road
Adventure Area, and the
No. 1 attraction is the Black
Mountain Thunder Zipline.
Opened in 2011, the
zipline provides patrons with
an incredible, close-up view
of the state’s highest peak,
Black Mountain.
The zipline is owned
and operated by the Harlan
County Outdoor Recreation
Authority (HCORA). Tickets may be purchased at the
Evarts Trail head Office and
General Store.
According to HCORA
Chairman Dallas Gilbert, the
line has been upgraded since
it’s opening, with 360 to 400
feet of additional line. Some
lines have been slowed down
for better viewing of the
scenery along with improved
braking system.
The upgrades were made
to an already impressive
attraction, with speeds of up
to 60 mph rocketing over the
canopy of forest at heights
of up to 400 feet awaiting
riders on a 1.5 mile two hour
tour.
Canopy tours operate
every day from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. or dusk.
Tour groups can be as
large as 10 people. If you
make reservations for less
than 10 people, you will likely be grouped with others.
Things to know:
• Arrive at the office/
check-in station at least 30
minutes prior to the beginning of your tour.
• You will be required to
sign a waiver and complete
the training line prior to
embarking on the canopy
tour.
• All tours are non-refundable once you are dropped off
by the driver at Line No. 1.
Fee Schedule: All fees
include the full two-hour,
11-line canopy tour.
$49 per person for adults,
$25 for children age 12 and
under. Children must be
accompanied by an adult.
The Black Mountain OffRoad Adventure Area, situated in a rustic backwoods
portion of Harlan County, is
a destination of choice for
thousands of visitors a year
who come for the trails and
beauty of the Appalachian
Mountains.
The park hosts several
events a year, including the
Southern Shine Crawl, Fall
Crawl and more. The park
specializes in motorized off
road activities, but occasionally hosts other outdoor
events as well.
The park offers over 200
miles of marked and rated
trails spread out over the
approximately 7,000 acre
portion of Black Mountain
the park occupies. Some
trails reach elevations up to
3,300 feet.
The park is open 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, 52
weeks a year.
The park has trials suitable
for ATV’s, 4x4s, and most
other off road vehicles. Offroaders ranging from novice
to very experienced can take
their pick of trails designed
for all skill level (easy, moderate and extreme).
Two separate trail heads
lead into the park, both of
them just minutes from RV
hookups, rental cabins and
other amenities.
Permits can be purchased
on a yearly or monthly basis,
with the fees going directly
into maintaining the trail
system and developing new
amenities.
“We’ve added approximately six new trails,” said Harlan
County Outdoor Recreation
Authority Chairman Dallas
Gilbert. “They’re combination trails for trucks, ATV’s
and side by side … we’re
going to be building more
side by side trails. The park
will continue to grow, we’re
looking at the aspect of getting some more property.”
Gilbert said the Authority,
which operates the park, is
looking into adding bicycle
trails.
“We’ve actually laid out the
trail for the bicycles,” said
Gilbert.
Gilbert said the park now
offers tours in a side by side
for people who don’t own
their own truck or ATV.
“The tour can be a two

whatever you choose we
have a tour that will suit

The 219 acre lake was constructed in 1963, and features excellent
fishing for a variety of species including rainbow trout, large mouth
bass, small mouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill and channel catfish.
Boating on the lake is limited to idle speed, with primitive camping, boat rentals, dock slips, picnic sites, public restrooms and telephone available nearby.
The bait shop and concession stand is open as posted, with the

One of the most popular tourist destinations in
Harlan County, Martins Fork Lake is located about 13
miles southeast of the city of Harlan in an area known
as Smith.
Martins Fork Lake is surrounded by several areas
designated for activities such as outdoor meetings,
grilling, picnics, fishing and a white sand beach area
for swimmers and those who just want to work on
their tan.
The lake is filled to the brim with bass, crappie,
walleye, bluegill and catfish, making fishing the number one attraction for the lake, whether it’s from the
bank or boat. Rainbow trout can be caught in an area
below the damn, rounding out the angling opportunities found at Martins Fork.
Swimming is restricted to the summer months, and
is confined to a swimming area marked off by buoys
and an orange pipeline designating the swimming
area in the water at the beach. No pets, alcohol or
glass containers are allowed on the beach. Swimming
is prohibited at the fishing pier and the boat ramp.
White-tailed deer, turkey, squirrel and grouse are
present in the woods surrounding the lake. Hunting
and trapping are allowed only under statewide regulations. Portable tree stands are allowed but must be
removed after each day. No vehicles of any kind may
be taken off authorized roads.
The Cumberland Shadow Trail winds its way
around the back waters of Martins Fork Lake for five
miles, offering fantastic views of the lake and surrounding country as well as opportunities for fishing
and camping. Two primitive campsites are located
along the trail for use by hikers, backpackers and
campers.

Norris Lake
Fun for the whole family
The tri-state area is abundant with things to do for
those who enjoy being on
the water.
Claiborne County is home
to Norris Lake.
Along the more than 800
miles of shoreline, there
are two state wildlife management areas, three state
parks, numerous boat docks,
county parks and public
access areas. Norris Lake
extends 56 miles up the
Powell River and 72 miles
up the Clinch River. The
lake has a surface area of
more than 34,200 acres and
a maximum width of 1.2
miles.
Located in an area of ridges and valleys, it abounds
in secluded coves. In some
of these wooded coves —
Cove Lake, Big Ridge and
the area around Norris Dam
— TVA established demonstration public parks, which
later became the nucleus
of Tennessee’s state park
system.
Several docks surround
the lake, including: Cedar
Grove Marina and Campground, Straight Creek Boat
Dock, Norris Landing Marina, Lakeview Boat Dock,
Lone Mountain Shores Boat
Dock, Powell Valley Marina
and Flat Hollow Boat Dock.
Most of the docks have pontoons, boats, campsites and/
or cabins available for rent.
Some have restaurants, so
you can pull your boat up to
the dock and enjoy the various food and drink available.
With over 800 miles of
shoreline and many secluded
coves, the clear, clean water
of Norris Lake is a premier
destination for house boating, water sports, cruising
and fishing.
Claiborne County Fair
has entertainment for all
The Claiborne County Fair
Association presents its annual
Claiborne County Fair each fall.
Area residents can expect plenty
to do during the fair, where there’s
something for everyone.
There are carnival rides for both
young and old and plenty of good
things to eat. Exhibits displaying
everything from homemade arts
and crafts to the biggest pumpkin
grown in Claiborne County can
be seen in the fair barn. Livestock
shows and the antique tractor pull
are highlights of the annual event.
Entertainment with local and wellknown musical acts is featured
nightly.
Some of the prettiest girls in the
area hit the stage on the Saturday
night prior to the fair, when the
Fairest of the Fair pageant is held.
Girls of all ages are given the
opportunity to represent Claiborne
County in the state pageant.
The Demolition Derby makes
a visit to the fair each year. The
4-cylinder derby was started in
2008, and both males and females
can enter to win the prize money.
The regular Annual Derby attracts
a huge audience, and is usually
held on the Thursday night of the
fair.
The festivities conclude on Saturday night with a large fireworks
finale. A complete listing of nightly events during the fair can be
found each year in the Claiborne
Progress.
The Fair is held at the Jaycees
Fairgrounds in Tazewell.

Regatta scores great reviews
The much-anticipated
Powell River Regatta drew
some 57 eager kayakers
and canoeists from Tennessee and other parts of the
country and they could not
have had better weather for
the 12-mile long excursion
down the pristine waterway
on the first Saturday of May
in 2015.
The Regatta, which kicked
off National Tourism Week
in Claiborne County, drew
nothing but praise from participants as they met event
co-sponsors Don Oakley and
Carl Nichols at the finish
line.
Oakley, co-owner of the
Wellbeing Conference Center and Regatta planning
committee chairman, said
he could not imagine being
part of a better coordinated
event.
A substantial number of
participants said they would
be telling their paddling
friends about the beauty
of the area and the Powell
River, he said.
“They said they would
be back next year and to
expect many more people,”
said Oakley.
Nichols, director of the
Claiborne Tourism Commission, said he and other
event volunteers heard nothing but positive remarks as
contestants slipped from the
water at the finish line.
“They said it was phenomenal, that it is just a
wonderful river. They said
Courtney Paige Walker, eighth place finalist in last year’s Miss Tennessee

they wouldn’t change a
thing about the event– that
everything just flowed perfectly and that it had been
superbly organized,” said
Nichols, adding praise for
Oakley and the Claiborne
Geo-Tourism Board, who
spearheaded the event.
One contestant, he said,
told him that experienced
kayakers will not normally
participate in a new event
during its first few years.
“Because they’re normally
so disorganized, they will
wait until the third or fourth
year of the event to give
them enough time to get the
kinks worked out of it,” said
Nichols.
The ecologically sound
Powell River, he said, has
been sorely underused in
recent years.
“We have this beautiful
river that runs through the
heart of the county. But,
there is not one event that
takes place on the river, anywhere,” said Nichols.
The event netted some
very impressive statistics
while raising funds for the
Pat Summitt Foundation.
“We are deeply appreciative of the time donated by
the 35 volunteers from our
community that made this
event possible. Coach Jenny
Michael, who started the
races, and the eleven members of her LMU Women’s
Volleyball team were a huge
help in making this event a
success,” said Oakley.
Oakley gave kudos to Claiborne Tourism director Carl
Nichols and other members
of the planning committee
including Carson Williams,
Tamara Bernadot, Patty Bottari and Herbert Parks. He
expressed his deep gratitude
to support personnel Kim
Bolton and Roger Hager,
director of Claiborne E-911,
and the many local businesses who sponsored the
event.
One major reason, he said,
for planning events like the
Regatta has everything to do
with bringing tourism dollars into the county. In fact,
the latest Economic Impact
Report for Claiborne County
shows some $17 million
in revenue was generated
through tourist events.
“Many people don’t realize just how much revenue
is brought in through people
attending these events –
food, gas, hotel stays and
other purchases all go
toward our tax base,” he
said.
Nichols says the Claiborne
Tourism Commission and
its many boards are work-
ing diligently to increase
those funds to $20 million
by 2020.
In fact, the Tourism Commission and the Claiborne
Historical Society will be
co-sponsoring a new event
to coincide with the 150th
anniversary of the Battle
of Tazewell. The Tazewell
Civil War Festival, slated for
the last Saturday in April of
2017, is expected to bring
countless tourism dollars
into the county via the number of Civil War enthusiasts
from across the country.
Nichols will be submitting
the inaugural Powell River
Regatta to the Middle East
Tennessee Tourism Council
for consideration in the
annual Chuck Davis Tourism Award. He says it would
be a real feather in the cap if
the event wins the award for
its first annual showing.

ties including Anderson,

Grainger, Jefferson, Knox,
Hamblen and Cocke. These
communities share a rich
heritage that are on display
during the festival.
In its first year, the festival
included the movie premiere
of ‘Red Dirt Rising.’ Based
on a true story, ‘Red Dirt
Rising’ is the story of love
in the time of moonshine as
three of stock car racing’s
earliest heroes come of age
to find escape from life’s
challenges on the track, ultimately shaping the future of
their families — and auto
racing — during the Fightin’
Forties.
Other years have seen
events evolve such as the
White Lightning Trail Festival Beauty Pageant, a motorcycle bike run to benefit
charities such as the Wounded Warrior Project and the
Pat Summit Foundation, a
5K run, an antique car and
truck show and more.
Entertainment of all
genres play throughout the
days of the festival, with
local musicians highlighted.
Berkau Park in Cumberland
Gap is the center of entertainment and many of the
presentations. Dancers and
other entertainers can be
seen in the street as well.
In addition to the numerous activities, food vendors
as well as arts and crafts
vendors set up along the
streets of Cumberland Gap.
Everything from handcrafted
jewelry, handwoven baskets
to handspun yarn can be
found at the festival.
There is something for
everyone at the White Lightning Trail Festival. If you are
interested in participating in
the festival as a vendor, pageant contestant, bike rider,
5K runner, car show entry,
or dance team, go to claibornecounty.com and choose
“events”. All applications are
posted online.

The Abraham Lincoln Library
and Museum is a popular
destination for scholars,
students and anyone
interested in the legacy of
our 16th president.
Learning about Lincoln
Located on the beautiful campus of
Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, the Abraham Lincoln
Library and Museum houses one of the
most diverse Lincoln and Civil War collections in the country.
Exhibited are many rare items — the
cane Lincoln carried that fateful night
at Ford’s Theatre, two life masks, the
tea set he and Mary Todd used in their
home in Springfield, and numerous
other artifacts. Approximately 30,000
books, manuscripts, pamphlets, photographs, paintings and sculptures tell the
story of President Lincoln and the Civil
War period in America’s history.
The Museum offers a variety of pro-
grams for the general public, school
groups and area teachers. The Museum’s most popular programs are annual
events. Many programs commemorate
significant events in Lincoln’s life. The
tragic Civil War years receive their fair
share of Museum projects also. For
additional information about annual or
upcoming programs and events, contact
Carol Campbell, Program and Tourism
Director, by calling 423-869-6439 or
email her at carol.campbell@LMUnet.
