Beautifully restored historic buildings and clean and attractive public spaces have made Downtown Middlesborough a leading regional and statewide attraction. A world class hiking, biking, and horse trail system draws people downtown and connects with Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. A wide variety of shops and restaurants provide everything from daily necessities and a quick and inexpensive meal, to higher-end goods, services, and fine dining all at locally-owned businesses. People travel from miles around to be part of the fun and excitement downtown has to provide. DDM gives details of historic downtown buildings: American Association Building This building served as headquarters for the American Association from 1891 until the 1950s. The building was badly damaged by a fire in 1997. Later the building was restored. Today artifacts are on display recognizing 6 August 2015 INSIDER GUIDE Discover Downtown Middlesboro is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that was founded in 2004. Since that time the organization has worked to spearhead revitalization of the downtown area. The group has accomplished the revitalization through coordinating grassroots action by volunteers on four committees - Organization, Promotion, Design, and Economic Restructuring. Some recent DDM projects include organizing the Christmas Parade and decoration of the downtown, addition of four fountains and seating at Cumberland Avenue and 20th Street, and encouraging the restoration of several buildings downtown. According to their website, www.downtownmiddlesboro. org, the mission of Discover Downtown Middlesboro (DDM) is to encourage citizen participation in the revitalization of Cumberland Avenue between 10th and 24th Street and several mixed-use walkable blocks to the north and south. The group also seeks to improve the physical appearance of the downtown while maintaining its historic integrity; to retain existing businesses and to attract new ones; and Alexander Arthur and his role founding Middlesboro. Bell County Tourism have their office and visitors center here. The museum and Victorian Garden are open to the public. Historic Canal Walk The Canal was built between 1889 and 1891 to provide drainage for the city. Italian workmen undertook the construction. Centennial Park and Veterans Wall At 21st Street between the Centennial Park and City Hall are memorials with the names of veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. Also along the wall are panels describing the history of Middlesborough. These were erected to commemorate the city’s centennial in the 1990s. Coal House and Coal Museum The Coal House was built in 1926, utilizing 42 tons of bituminous coal taken from mines in our area. The Bell County Chamber of Commerce has their offices there today. Next to it is an outdoor museum showcasing mining tools and equipment. First Presbyterian Church In August 1889, the Presbyterian Congregation was the first to build in Middlesboro. The original church on this same lot was replaced by this building in 1912. St. Mary’s Episcopal Church This is one of the finest examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture in the U.S. The cornerstone was laid in 1890 and the church was dedicated on February 11, 1891. The design is based on blueprints of St. Mary’s Church in Middlesbrough, England. Alexander Arthur once attended church here. Gifts from British founders and descendants on Easter 1891 included a Tiffanydesigned stained glass window, hand-carved eagle lectern and brass Communion rail. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Edgewood Court (Site of The Middlesborough Hotel) A fine four story high hotel was built here in 1889 and enlarged in 1890. The main porch faced east and had excellent views of Cumberland Gap. Other buildings included hitching shed and service buildings to the west. The hotel had an annex called the Occonita Club that was reached by a “skyway” built over Edgewood Road. While many of these buildings are long gone, portions of their foundations remain. Park Theater O.G. Roaden opened the Park Theatre in October 1947. William Price Coomer had taken over ownership by 1953. David Pitts, an evangelist from Louisville, began holding religious services for his “Calvary Temple Church” here starting in the 1960s. By the 1970s the Park was in trouble. A classified ad in the April 20, 1974, Middlesboro Daily News listed 200 “theater type seats for sale at $1 apiece. The Jaycees continued to manage the theater for a few years more before it was closed altogether around the time of the opening of the Middlesboro Mall. St. Julian’s Catholic Church The Middlesborough Town Company conveyed a lot to the Catholic pastor in Jellico, Tennessee, on July 10, 1889. The first Mass was celebrated on North 10th Street in May 1890. By 1892 this location proved inadequate, so the church deeded back their lot to the Town Company in exchange for their present location on Chester Ave between 18th and 19th Street. Arthur Building Built in 1890 by the founder of Middlesborough, it has a crest designed by the Arthur family over the door. During the “boom” era, the lot sold for more than a comparable lot cost in downtown Manhattan. Weinstein Building Built in 1906, this housed one of many mercantile businesses started by the large Jewish population that immigrated to Middlesborough in its “boom” days. The building served as a department store for many years and was a J.C. Penney’s at one time. 19th Street From the 1930s to 1950s when Middlesborough was “wide open,” this street was lined by saloons, dance halls and similar activities. Even the grocery stores on this street sported slot machines. Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church This African-American congregation was organized in 1889. The present church was built in 1910. Further renovations were made in 1921. Boone Trace Daniel Boone passed through this way on his journey westward in 1775. Hoe & Sons Middlesboro Tannery This hilltop cemetery with commanding views of the Cumberland Gap is the burial place of Alexander Arthur and many of the town’s earliest settlers. One of the city’s original industries, the Pioneer Iron Works, originated at this location. The company was bought by the Hoe family and has continued to be operated by members of the family for over 100 years. This is one of only a few foundries remaining nationally still doing custom iron work. Coal Tipple Here coal from area mines is unloaded from trucks into railroad cars. Colson House This is a brick structure that was originally constructed around 1800. When built the house faced the Wilderness Road that passed through Middlesboro. At some later time the brick was covered in stucco and a front porch added. When it was built in 1890, it was one of the largest tanneries in the world. Fires have since taken most of the buildings. Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College This college dates back to 1960 when the Southeast Center of the University of Kentucky started. The Middlesboro campus was established in 1995. Middlesborough Airport This airport has a 3,650 foot runway that was built in 1921. It is the second oldest airport in Kentucky. At one time it was the home of the P-38 “Glacier Girl” that was recovered from Greenland from under 268 feet of ice, brought to Middlesboro, and fully restored. Jewish Cemetery Middlesborough once had a sizeable Jewish population. After the initial boom passed, many members of the Jewish community decided to stay on. Members of families by the names of Horr, Ginsberg, Euster, Goodfriend and many others lived, worked, and were eventually buried in Middlesboro. Famous among these was Jack Zuta who immigrated from Russia between 1903 and 1905. Zuta was involved with several saloons in Middlesboro. After the town went dry in 1915 he moved to Chicago. As he gained influence there, he became known as Al Capone’s arch-rival. He was gunned down gangland style at the Lake View Resort Hotel near Delafield, Wisconsin. His body was brought back to Middlesborough and buried in the Jewish Cemetery. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park The “Gap” is an 800 foot deep natural break in the Cumberland Mountains. Native Americans passed through on a trail called Warriors Path. Later pioneers led by Daniel Boone marked out the trail that became the Wilderness Road. More than 300,000 pioneers traveled the “Gateway to the West” between 1775 and 1810. Visitors can walk through the actual Gap opened in spring of 2002 after creation of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and restoration of the road. Cumberland Manor Bed & Breakfast The Carey-Easton Home was built during the initial boom period. Tudor detailing on the front facade is distinctively English in appearance. A Craftsman style brick porch was added in the early 1900s. The interior has ample rooms on the ground floor with beautiful wood molding and other decorative features including stained glass, fireplaces, and extensive historical antiques and furnishings. Today this is the Cumberland Manor Bed and Breakfast. August 2015 606-573-5105 30 August 2015 INSIDER GUIDE Norris Lake Fun for the whole family The tri-state area is abundant with things to do for those who enjoy being on the water. Claiborne County is home to Norris Lake. Along the more than 800 miles of shoreline, there are two state wildlife management areas, three state parks, numerous boat docks, county parks and public access areas. Norris Lake extends 56 miles up the Powell River and 72 miles up the Clinch River. The lake has a surface area of more than 34,200 acres and a maximum width of 1.2 miles. Located in an area of ridges and valleys, it abounds in secluded coves. In some of these wooded coves — Cove Lake, Big Ridge and the area around Norris Dam — TVA established demonstration public parks, which later became the nucleus of Tennessee’s state park system. Several docks surround the lake, including: Cedar Grove Marina and Campground, Straight Creek Boat Dock, Norris Landing Marina, Lakeview Boat Dock, Lone Mountain Shores Boat Dock, Powell Valley Marina and Flat Hollow Boat Dock. Most of the docks have pontoons, boats, campsites and/ or cabins available for rent. Some have restaurants, so you can pull your boat up to the dock and enjoy the various food and drink available. With over 800 miles of shoreline and many secluded coves, the clear, clean water of Norris Lake is a premier destination for house boating, water sports, cruising and fishing. Claiborne County Fair has entertainment for all The Claiborne County Fair Association presents its annual Claiborne County Fair each fall. Area residents can expect plenty to do during the fair, where there’s something for everyone. There are carnival rides for both young and old and plenty of good things to eat. Exhibits displaying everything from homemade arts and crafts to the biggest pumpkin grown in Claiborne County can be seen in the fair barn. Livestock shows and the antique tractor pull are highlights of the annual event. Entertainment with local and wellknown musical acts is featured nightly. Some of the prettiest girls in the area hit the stage on the Saturday night prior to the fair, when the Fairest of the Fair pageant is held. Girls of all ages are given the opportunity to represent Claiborne County in the state pageant. The Demolition Derby makes a visit to the fair each year. The 4-cylinder derby was started in 2008, and both males and females can enter to win the prize money. The regular Annual Derby attracts a huge audience, and is usually held on the Thursday night of the fair. The festivities conclude on Saturday night with a large fireworks finale. A complete listing of nightly events during the fair can be found each year in the Claiborne Progress. The Fair is held at the Jaycees Fairgrounds in Tazewell. Regatta scores great reviews The much-anticipated Powell River Regatta drew some 57 eager kayakers and canoeists from Tennessee and other parts of the country and they could not have had better weather for the 12-mile long excursion down the pristine waterway on the first Saturday of May in 2015. The Regatta, which kicked off National Tourism Week in Claiborne County, drew nothing but praise from participants as they met event co-sponsors Don Oakley and Carl Nichols at the finish line. Oakley, co-owner of the Wellbeing Conference Center and Regatta planning committee chairman, said he could not imagine being part of a better coordinated event. A substantial number of participants said they would be telling their paddling friends about the beauty of the area and the Powell River, he said. “They said they would be back next year and to expect many more people,” said Oakley. Nichols, director of the Claiborne Tourism Commission, said he and other event volunteers heard nothing but positive remarks as contestants slipped from the water at the finish line. “They said it was phenomenal, that it is just a wonderful river. They said Courtney Paige Walker, eighth place finalist in last year’s Miss Tennessee Pageant and a contestant in the upcoming 2015 pageant, spent the day greeting Regatta participants. Walker is a Claiborne County native. Harlan County Campground & rV Site 34 August 2015 INSIDER GUIDE We grow ideas into better communities, stronger local economies, and healthier lives. Official results show Whitaker pulling ahead of Painter during a photo-finish in the men’s ages 25 to 54 category. they wouldn’t change a thing about the event– that everything just flowed perfectly and that it had been superbly organized,” said Nichols, adding praise for Oakley and the Claiborne Geo-Tourism Board, who spearheaded the event. One contestant, he said, told him that experienced kayakers will not normally participate in a new event during its first few years. “Because they’re normally so disorganized, they will wait until the third or fourth year of the event to give them enough time to get the kinks worked out of it,” said Nichols. The ecologically sound Powell River, he said, has been sorely underused in recent years. “We have this beautiful river that runs through the heart of the county. But, there is not one event that takes place on the river, anywhere,” said Nichols. The event netted some very impressive statistics while raising funds for the Pat Summitt Foundation. “We are deeply appreciative of the time donated by the 35 volunteers from our community that made this event possible. Coach Jenny Michael, who started the races, and the eleven members of her LMU Women’s Volleyball team were a huge help in making this event a success,” said Oakley. Oakley gave kudos to Claiborne Tourism director Carl Nichols and other members of the planning committee including Carson Williams, Tamara Bernadot, Patty Bottari and Herbert Parks. He expressed his deep gratitude to support personnel Kim Bolton and Roger Hager, director of Claiborne E-911, and the many local businesses who sponsored the event. One major reason, he said, for planning events like the Regatta has everything to do with bringing tourism dollars into the county. In fact, the latest Economic Impact Report for Claiborne County shows some $17 million in revenue was generated through tourist events. “Many people don’t realize just how much revenue is brought in through people attending these events – food, gas, hotel stays and other purchases all go toward our tax base,” he said. Nichols says the Claiborne Tourism Commission and its many boards are work- ing diligently to increase those funds to $20 million by 2020. In fact, the Tourism Commission and the Claiborne Historical Society will be co-sponsoring a new event to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Tazewell. The Tazewell Civil War Festival, slated for the last Saturday in April of 2017, is expected to bring countless tourism dollars into the county via the number of Civil War enthusiasts from across the country. Nichols will be submitting the inaugural Powell River Regatta to the Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council for consideration in the annual Chuck Davis Tourism Award. He says it would be a real feather in the cap if the event wins the award for its first annual showing. 16 Years Experience!
