Annual Report - Discover Downtown Middlesboro
FROM THE PRESIDENT Please let me begin by saying how grateful our organization has been for the incredible support we’ve gotten over the past year. We had the highest level of member giving in the history of the organization. Many successful events were held downtown and our revitalization efforts gained momentum. Our program also earned the highest “Designated Main Street Program” certification from the Kentucky Heritage Council. In April 2013, Storm Cunningham, author of the Restoration Economy visited to kick off our strategic planning for the downtown. This visit and resulting 5-year plan was supported by a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Another grant helped us develop a philanthropic/fundraising plan through the Appalachian Rural Development Philanthropy Initiative and with support from the Kentucky League of Cities. One of the hallmarks of the past year has been growing interest in trails and trail planning. DDM worked with the City to secure a $100,000 grant for upgrades to the Canal Walk. Ultimately we hope to link the downtown and National Park via a trail system. We have continued to see improvements to the storefronts and infrastructure on Cumberland Ave. A clean-up event in July removed several unattractive awnings. A total of 25 buildings were improved and of these six facades were restored for a total investment of $2,765,650. Our survey of business owners reported 100 new jobs created in 2013. Over the summer DDM benefited from the work of not one but three interns. They documented over 250 buildings using the new and innovative RuskinArc platform, a survey of businesses was conducted, and valuable experience was gained by all. The highlight of the year was the Better Block event. Over 100 volunteers from 18 states visited downtown to transform a single block over a weekend in October. These short-term tactical interventions were undertaken to demonstrate the possibility of long-term change. In case you missed it, there is a great video you can view on YouTube. We hope that you consider becoming a member and support our work as we seek to make bigger and bigger changes downtown in the year ahead. On behalf of the Board of Directors we thank you for your support. Thank you, Keith Nagle President ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2013 Grants In 2013, we secured $156,500 in grants: Recreational Trails Program $100,000 City of Middlesboro $20,000 * ARC Strategic Planning Grant $10,000 * Flex-E Grant, Better Block $8,000 Philanthropic Initiative Grant $8,000 Certified Local Gov. Grant $5,000 National Trust Preservation $5,000 * Orton Family Foundation $500 * $156,500 *Funds received and recorded in 2013 fiscal year. Annual Meeting and Membership We held our best attended Annual Meeting yet at the Alexander Arthur Museum. Over 60 people heard reports from our Board and committees. The Annual Appeal sent out with this yielded the largest number of members and highest level of member giving in the history of the organization. Strategic Planning Internationally recognized author Storm Cunningham visited Middlesboro in April with support from an Appalachian Regional Commission grant. In public meetings and a stakeholder workshop, he made the case for how restoration of natural resources and cultural resources could create jobs. Philanthropic Plan The Appalachian Rural Development Philanthropy Initiative (ARDPI) selected Bell County and Middlesborough for a community philanthropy initiative. The Kentucky League of Cities facilitated several public meetings and stakeholder workshops to create a philanthropic fundraising plan to guide our work over the next five years and to help us raise over $5 million. Market Analysis Nationally recognized downtown revitalization effort Kennedy Smith completed a Market Analysis for Downtown Middlesborough. In it she included recommendations for how to reposition the local economy. Internships DDM hosted three interns through the spring and summer months. Marie Oehlerking is a graduate student in Historic Preservation Planning at the University of Texas at Austin, Maria Paganelli is a graduate student with the Lincoln Memorial University School of Business, and Tiffany Duncan is an undergraduate at LMU. Business Survey Over the summer we performed a survey of the over 200 businesses in the downtown district. The results helped us gain a greater perspective on the number of jobs and investments made in buildings. Press Coverage / Social Media Our program received extensive attention in statewide, regional, and local media. Television coverage on WBIR and WYMT. Newspaper coverage on Middlesboro Daily News, Lexington Herald-Leader, Pineville Sun, and others. On social media we now have 2,139 likes on Facebook, and 576 followers on Twitter @DDMBoro. Historic Preservation A preservation plan was prepared with support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Certified Local Government program of the Kentucky Heritage Council. We conducted a “Restoration Survey” in June and received over 150 responses. A pilot historic preservation fund was launched, thanks to a generous gift from a local donor. We hope this to grow this into a powerful tool to encourage preservation. Work is also underway on the predevelopment of the Elks Home/Old Hospital that DDM owns. Successful Downtown Events Existing and new events attracted hundreds of people downtown. Our newly initiated sponsorship program brought over $10,000 of new revenue for the organization. Armed Forces Day: For the first time this year, we provided support for the Armed Forces Day event. Singing groups were brought in, a hog was roasted, and a great time was had by all participants. Ducky Dash: This was the most successful year of the three years this event has been held. Thanks to the support of several generous sponsors, DDM got support for the work of the organization. Christmas Parade: Another successful Christmas Parade brought over 50 marching groups and hundreds of people downtown with Jimmy Rose as Grand Marshal.
