“This Just In”, Gilad Hekselman's fourth album, is by far the most exciting and memorable of all his
projects to date. Its imaginative concept, coupled with the stellar musicianship this group is known
for, creates a lasting impression. The album plays out like a news broadcast, peppered with short,
improvised news breaks that each test the boundaries of style and genre in their own way.
Together the tracks shed light on the many musical styles that have influenced Gilad over the
years. Jazz, rock, folk, African, Israeli and North Indian classical music converge in this beautiful
collection of songs, creating a powerfully diverse and unique album that features Gilad’s harmonic
and rhythmic mastery while showcasing the melodic virtuosity that has become his trademark. Joe
Martin on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums, along with guest saxophonist Mark Turner on three
tracks, offer up the highest levels of musical taste and ability, painting a dynamic backdrop that
allows Hekselman to truly shine.

Gilad Hekselman has been developing a reputation as one of the most promising guitarists in
New York since his arrival in 2004. In only a few years this native Israeli has shared the stage
with some of the greatest artists in the New York jazz scene including Chris Potter, Mark Turner,
John Scofield, Anat Cohen, Ari Hoenig,
Esperanza Spalding, Sam Yahel, Jeff Ballard,
Gretchen Parlato, Avishai Cohen, Jeff 'Tain'
Watts, Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks and
Greg Hutchinson.
He has played all the major jazz clubs in New
York including the Blue Note, The Jazz
Standard, Dizzy's Club and Smalls. He is
constantly touring world-wide and has
played most major jazz festivals including
Montreux, North Sea, Montreal and San
Francisco.
Gilad is the winner of the 2005 Gibson Montreux International Guitar Competition. He opened
for guitar legend Paco de Lucia at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, which led to a string of
performances at the IAJE Conference and at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York.
That same year Gilad released his debut album SplitLife (Smalls Records) recorded with bassist
Joe Martin and drummer Ari Hoenig. It received rave reviews from the press as did his second
album, Words Unspoken (LateSet Records), recorded and released in 2008 with Joe Martin,

tenor
In 2009, Gilad recorded three tracks for Walt
Disney Records, one of which was included
in the record Everybody Wants To Be a Cat
(2011). The album features versions to Disney
songs played by a top-shelf lineup of
musicians including Dave Brubeck, Joshua
Redman, Esperanza Spalding, Diane Reeves,
Roy Hargrove, Kurt Rosenwinkel, The Bad Plus
and many other jazz legends.
In the spring of 2010 Gilad recorded his third
album, Hearts Wide Open, with Joe Martin on bass, Marcus Gilmore on drums and worldrenowned saxophonist Mark Turner, a project that Gilad defined as his "best recorded work so
far". The record received rave reviews globally and was featured in many Best-of-2011 lists
such as New York Times, Amazon and iTunes.
In April of 2013, Gilad will release his fourth album, This Just In, under the JazzVillage label of
Harmonia Mundi. Recorded and engineered in New York by Michael Cisneros Perez, the new
album with Gilad Hekselman, Joe Martin, and Marcus Gilmore also features Mark Turner on
three titles.
Born in Israel in 1983, Gilad studied classical piano from age six and began studying guitar at
the age of 9. From age 12 to 14 he performed regularly with the band of a weekly children's
television show. He attended the prestigious Thelma Yellin School of Arts, graduating with
excellence from the jazz department at age 18. Gilad received the America - Israel Cultural
Foundation Scholarship for studies abroad to attend The New School in New York, where he
completed a BFA degree in performing arts in 2008.
Gilad performs on handcrafted guitars made by Victor Baker.

Joe Martin is one of the most sought-after bassists on the current New York City
jazz scene. Known for his warm sound, sharp ear, harmonic flexibility, and lyrical
solos, he has performed with a diverse range of musicians. His new CD as a
leader, "Not By Chance", is now available on Anzic records. It features Chris
Potter, Brad Mehldau, and Marcus Gilmore. Joe was an integral member of
Kurt Rosenwinkel’s group for several years, documented by Kurt's live
recording, "The Remedy-Live At The Village Vanguard". He has also performed
with Andy Bey, Vinicius Cantuaria, Bill Charlap, Anat Cohen, Avishai Cohen, Art Farmer, Aaron
Goldberg, Larry Goldings, Jon Gordon, Ari Hoenig, Joel Frahm, Fred Hersch, Ethan Iverson,
Guillermo Klein, Ivan Lins, Lionel Loueke, Bill McHenry, John McNeil, Brad Mehldau, Mingus Big
Band, Ben Monder, Jane Monheit, Jean-Michel Pilc, Chris Potter, Maria Schneider, Jaleel Shaw,
Grady Tate, Mark Turner, and many others.
Continuous musical dialogue amongst great musicians is a major source of inspiration for Joe.
Composition is an indispensable component to Joe’s musical world. A strong melodic sense and
the use of the bass part as both function and counterpoint are apparent in his writing. His debut
CD "Passage", which features Mark Turner, Kevin Hays, and Jorge Rossy, received much acclaim
from critics and musicians alike. He leads gigs regularly in New York City at clubs including The
Jazz Gallery, Smoke, and Small’s. He has also toured with his band in the USA and Italy. The
experience he has gained performing with jazz legends, as well as his contemporaries, has and
continues to further his growth and maturity as a musician.
Marcus Gilmore, drums
This young jazz drummer is used to being part of a famous drumming family
as it was his grandfather, jazz legend and fellow Zildjian artist, Roy Haynes
who gave Marcus his first drumset at age ten. Now, at just 25 years old,
Marcus has the resume one would expect to see of a drummer decades
older. He has performed with Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Vijay Iyer, John
Clayton, Chick Corea, Ray Barretto, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Wycliffe
Gordon, Roy Hargrove, Christian Scott, and Ravi Coltrane, among many
others.
A graduate of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, he
received several distinctions such as Wynton Kelly Foundation Award and
the Wyoming Seminary PAI Best Instrumentalist Award. We have seen him in
recent years, alongside Vijay Iyer, Steve Coleman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Gilad Hekselman and
Nicholas Payton. He is currently touring with Chick Corea.

Mark Turner (born November 10, 1965) is a jazz saxophonist and clarinetist with
several recordings to his credit.
He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1990 before moving to New
York. Turner worked at Tower Records in New York City for an extended period
before working full time as a jazz musician. Mark Turner's sound is reminiscent of
that of Warne Marsh, in that he often produces a somewhat dry, woody tone.
He also has elements of John Coltrane in his playing. Turner has mentioned
both Marsh and Coltrane as influences, and has used elements of both players' styles in his music
without resorting to mimicry. Turner's range extends seamlessly into the high altissimo register. His
improvised lines tend to be harmonically and rhythmically convoluted while maintaining melodic
coherence. His compositions often make use of repeated patterns, odd-metered time signatures,
intervallic leaps, and a selective use of space. Mark Turner has regularly collaborated with Kurt
Rosenwinkel, Larry Grenadier, and Jeff Ballard, and has formed various collectives that include
these musicians (M.T.B. and prominently, FLY). He has also played with the influential Dave Holland
Big Band. In 2003 Turner collaborated with alto saxophonist Gary Foster in a special concert billed
as "Mark Turner and Friends".
Tours also feature :
Jeff Ballard, drums
Jeff grew up in Santa Cruz, California. He recalls when he
was a child laying in bed listening to the music his father
would play every weekend: Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald,
Louie Armstrong, Sergio Mendez, Oscar Peterson, Milton
Nascimento; how he loved the sound and the speed of
Ed Thigpen’s brushes on the snare.
At the age of twenty-five he began playing with Ray
Charles. After three years with Ray Charles, Jeff Ballard
move to New York City where he found like-minded
musicians who were drawing on tradition as well as
searching for their own interpretation of playing and expression in music. “Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark
Turner, Brad Mehldau, Avishai Cohen, Guillermo Klein, Larry Grenadier, Ben Allison…and many others.
Jeff Ballard has also played and toured with Eddie Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, Buddy Montgomery,
Lou Donaldson, Mike Stern, and Danilo Perez. He joined Chick Corea in 1999 and continues to play in
his various projects.
Currently Jeff Ballard is a member of the Brad Mehldau Trio, Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band, performs
periodically with Corea, and is a co-leader of Fly, a collective trio with Mark Turner and Larry
Grenadier. Fly is a sparse unit with a focused approach in which the lead voice often changes
instruments, or simply vanishes into a three-way dialogue. “Interdependence is total. We all wanted
to pare down and see what we could do sonically with this type of instrumentation. There is an extra
harmonic and sonic space compared to other formations. Changing the traditional roles of our
instruments is just one consequence of this. Also it allows us to explore our own compositions.” Their
latest self entitled record, Fly, and ensuing concerts have won critical acclaim as best of the year
2004.

This Just In by Gilad Hekselman
In the age of 24-hour cable news stations, the internet, smartphones and social media, the news
cycle moves at an ever-quickening pace. On his scintillating fourth album, This Just In, guitarist
Gilad Hekselman takes a cue from that rapid-fire information stream and files his latest report from
the front lines of modern jazz.
Leading his powerful trio with bassist Joe Martin,
drummer Marcus Gilmore and featuring guest
saxophonist Mark Turner on three cuts, This Just In is
Hekselman’s most exciting and visceral outing to
date. The album, to be released April 9, 2013 via
Harmonia Mundi’s Jazz Village imprint, borrows its
structure from a news broadcast, with headlining
stories from across the globe represented by
Hekselman’s wide-ranging compositions, influenced
by jazz, rock, folk, and Africa, Israeli and North
Indian music. These pieces alternate with a series of
brief improvisations that function as late-breaking
newsflashes.
“Each one of these pieces has a totally different
mood to it,” Hekselman explains, “like they’re telling
stories from different places in the world.”
Hekselman didn’t set out to depict specific current events in his compositions; there’s no tune
about the latest war-torn region or scandal-plagued politician here. Instead, he wanted to evoke
the urgent pace and sudden tonal shifts of a news broadcast; in the guitarist’s compositions can be
found the curiosity of the roving reporter, scanning the globe for inspiration and bringing it home in
his own singular voice.
The New York Times’ Ben Ratliff has compared that voice to such estimable guitar greats as Pat
Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel, praising Hekselman as possessing a “warm and clean guitar tone,
clear articulation, crazily extended improvisational ideas, speed when he needs it, an advanced
understanding of harmony, and the flexibility to go wherever his bands want.”
This Just In follows 2010’s stellar Hearts Wide Open (Le Chant Du Monde), which cemented
Hekselman’s place among the pantheon of rising jazz stars. JazzTimes wrote that the album
“establishes Hekselman as a writer fluent in a diverse, enthralling jazz vocabulary.”
The album’s concept was inspired by the title tune, which opens with a bracing bass line that
suggests the theme music from a particularly forward-thinking evening news show. The exhilaration
of a breaking story comes urgently through on Hekselman’s blistering, rock-inflected solo, while
more melancholy news is delivered through the elegiac beauty of “March of the Sad Ones.”

P & C 2013 Gilad Hekselman Under exclusive licence to JAZZVILLAGE/HARMONIA MUNDI S.A. The human interest comes in the form of a
nostalgic look back, as on Hekselman’s spacious
rearrangement of Don Grolnick’s “Nothing
Personal,” best known from Michael Brecker’s
rendition, which the guitarist used to play in his
high school jazz ensemble. Or in the inspiring tale
of two aspiring artists looking toward a promising
future, which Hekselman recalls through the
wistfully lyrical “Dreamers.” As he recalls, “A friend
was visiting me from Israel and told me she didn’t
know how to write a tune. So I asked her to sing
me a melody and I developed it through different
changes and variations. I completed it later and
called it ‘Dreamers’ because that’s what it felt like
we were doing at that moment.”
The omniscience of the news camera is
suggested by “The Eye in the Sky,” a mercurial
arrangement of the Alan Parsons Project song
from 1982. Another take on the all-seeing comes
via the lush, free-floating “Above,” which shifts
from cloud-like airiness to wiry speed through
Hekselman’s fleet fingers. “Ghost of the North”
offers a profile of one of the composer’s
inspirations, Frédéric Chopin, and “This Just Out”
recapitulates the title track with a darker, edgier
tone, apprehensive about what the next day’s
headlines may bring.
The five short “Newsflash” pieces were improvised
in the studio by Hekselman and Gilmore, with the
guitarist adding synth parts to their most successful efforts. All of the pieces were recorded with the
band together in the studio, without even the separation of booths or headphones, which
Hekselman says adds to the album’s vital immediacy.
“It’s similar to how we would play in real life,” he says. “We’re used to playing on stage, next to
other people, hearing them directly from their instruments. There’s something very unnatural about
being in a studio, so the more I record, the more I realize how important it is for me to really feel the
energy of the other musicians. It makes a big difference in the way that I’m able to connect with
the music.”
That deep connection is evident throughout This Just In, which is the result of Hekselman’s long
history with his sidemen. Martin has played on all of Hekselman’s records, and their relationship
dates back to the guitarist’s arrival in New York from his native Israel in 2004. Gilmore joined for
Hekselman’s second release, Words Unspoken, in 2008, and Turner contributed his immediately
recognizable voice to Hearts Wide Open.
In the relatively short span of time since he’s arrived in the States, Hekselman has established himself
as one of the leading new voices of the jazz guitar. In 2005, he won the Gibson Montreux
International Guitar Competition, which he followed with performances on such esteemed stages
as the Blue Note, the Jazz Gallery, Smalls, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Montreux Jazz Festival,

DownBeat Magazine classified Gilad Hekselman as the N°5 rising star on the international jazz scene
last year
France’s primary jazz magazine JazzMan has singled him out as « a leader and one of the best
representatives of a talented generation of Israeli artists ».
French journalist Ludovic Florin recently wrote that Gilad is « rhythmically, the most gifted guitarist of
the century ».
"...possessing a distinctive lyricism and easily embraceable artfulness that seems to reach beyond his
years... Hekselman has a pristine, crystalline sound and a bright playing style that seems as natural and
sustaining as air and water... Imagine a brightly lit day, sunlight on water - you are there. If Monet’s
waterlily studies were music this could be it... with a quiet assertiveness and expertise that is winning
throughout..." Laurel Gross, All About Jazz
"The feeling in a small club quickly grows intense when GILAD HEKSELMAN, an Israeli jazz guitarist in his
mid-20s, steps up to improvise. Since arriving in New York five years ago, Mr. Hekselman has set himself
roughly up in the line of Pat Metheny and Kurt Rosenwinkel, with a warm and clean guitar tone, clear
articulation, crazily extended improvisational ideas..." Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"...Mr. Hekselman, playing complex chords with extended harmony — the higher science of jazz
academia, but done with passion — moved his solo toward a peak. About two minutes in, the
audience began yelling." Ben Ratliff, New York Times
"Mr. Hekselman is a guitarist who favors a clarity of tone and purpose, and who surrounds himself with
strong talent." Nate Chinen, New York Times
"...Gilad Hekselman's SplitLife (Smalls Records) is everything one could hope for in a debut release. The
Israeli-born guitarist shows maturity beyond his years...In terms of time feel, technique, tone projection
and linear and chordal sophistication, Hekselman is clearly poised to reach the highest ranks on his
instrument." David Adler, Jazz Times
"Hekselman is a subtle player who holds the spotlight with tasteful runs. He seeks out transcendental
lines and often finds them... Hekselman doesn't clamor for attention. His playing, though, is quietly
persuasive." Karl Stark, Philadelphia Inquirer
"The debut recording by guitarist Gilad Hekselman has the youth displaying a mature sound, the ability
to think fast, and an inventive use of space". Scott Yanow, Allmusic
A beautiful album from Gilad Hekselman, one of the best guitarists of a new generation of talented
musicians. JAZZMAG – France
