Grows Green It’s “Bling” Flight We have completed our late season fertilizer application for the entire golf course. The greens have been fertilized with a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen and potassium. The remainder of the course was fertilized with a 3:4 ratio of nitrogen to potassium. 26000 lbs of fertilizer was applied to the tees, fairways, and roughs. The extra potassium will improve cold tolerance, and aid in recovery from winter traffic. Seed is being applied to the tee tops, and should provide a good teeing surface for the winter months. The par three tees, and smaller tees, are subject to heavy wear from divots and traffic, and were seeded accordingly. The driving range tee, with its larger surface area, will not be seeded again this year. Last year, after careful consideration, we decided not to over-seed the greens. The response I received was overwhelmingly positive. We effectively extended the season of our summer grass into December, and came out firing in March instead of May. We also eliminated the disruptive process of overseeding, and competition between two grass varieties in the spring. Unless we see that the experts are forecasting a brutally cold winter, I see no reason to over-seed again this year. Our winter traffic programs will begin December 1st. Until that time, please be aware of traffic patterns; try to avoid worn areas, and areas marked with yellow stakes. Ball-mark repair will be important this winter, so please remember to repair them! Thanks, see you on the course! If you would like to improve your game, schedule a lesson with Dan - you'll be glad you did! Lamm on Golf Time flies. How often does that thought cross your mind? Unfortunately, there are constant reminders of how quickly the years are passing. The most obvious and unpleasant are the daily aches and pains of the aging process. Some others that come to mind include . . . Seeing children and grandchildren of friends and relatives you haven’t seen for a while. “That’s little Johnny?” you ask with a puzzled look on your face. “The last time I saw him he was a baby. He must be in high school by now. What? He’s in his second year of college? Oh my.” Going to high school or college reunions after not going for a decade or two. “Honey, look how old everyone looks but us,” you whisper to your spouse. “And, my goodness, most of ‘em have put on a few pounds.” Your spouse whispers back, “What do think they’re saying about us?” Ouch! And then there is playing the same golf course for years and years. Few things reveal the passing of time more clearly. Like many of our members, I’ve played the “new” Hidden Hills course since Arnold Palmer started his re-design of the course in 1987. I’ve had so many wonderful experiences playing the sport I love with dear friends on such a beautiful and challenging layout. But I also remember where I used to hit my tee shots and which clubs I used for my approach shots and . . . well, let’s just say I’m not the “kid” I once was. Take No. 18, for example: There was a time when I could drive it near the 100-yard marker. Then it got to the point where my best drives were easily inside the 150-yard marker, but not near the 100 plate. Then I started having trouble getting to the 150 marker . . . and now I simply hope to get inside the 200-yard marker (from the green tees!) Remember when 150-yard shot was a 7-iron? Then, almost overnight, it became a 5-iron. Now . . . well, let’s be thankful for the hybrid clubs. Where has the distance gone? Where have the years gone? Like I said, time flies. Great Golf!
