responsibility for the selection of the program to achieve your intended results and for the installation, use, and results
obtained from this program.
License Agreement
VidCAD and its related documentation are copyrighted. You may physically transfer the program from one computer to
another provided that the program is used on one computer only and by one person at a time. You may not distribute copies
of the program, components or documentation to others. CSD authorizes you to make actual copies of the software for the
sole purpose of backing up your software. All other copies of the program and its documentation are in violation of this
agreement.
If you make backup copies of the program, you must reproduce and include the copyright notice on all backup copies. You
may transfer and license the product to another party if the other party agrees to the terms and conditions of this agreement,
and submit documentation of this transfer in writing to CSD. If you transfer the program, you must at the same time
transfer the documentation and backup copies, or transfer the documentation and destroy the backup copies.
Limited Warranty
CSD does not warrant that the functions contained in the program will meet your requirements or that the operation of the

5. Installation
Things to note before installing:
•
Warning: The VidCAD SQL installation requires a lot of memory to run properly. Shut down all applications
and non-essential processes before executing the installation. If you encounter difficulties during installation,
contact VidCAD Technical Support at (888) 484-3832, +1 (575) 522-6004 or [email protected], or visit the
Support page on our web site (http://www.vidcad.com) to keep updated on current technical issues.
•
VidCAD SQL may not operate properly if AutoCAD LT or a non compatible version of full AutoCAD is loaded
on the same computer.
•
If you are upgrading from a previous version of VidCAD, we recommend making a full backup of your VidCAD
directory including all facilities (projects) and library folder. If you intend to convert your old VidCAD Data to
the new VidCAD SQL database, it is imperative that you execute a monthly zip utility. If you need any
assistance in completing your backup, please contact VidCAD Technical Support.
•
If you are currently running a full version of AutoCAD, we recommend you make a backup (export) of your
AutoCAD profile prior to installing VidCAD SQL.
•
If you are upgrading from a previous version of VidCAD, you must uninstall all older versions of VidCAD prior
to installing VidCAD SQL.
•
The following installation instructions are for standard, standalone workstations only. If custom or
network instructions are needed, please contact VidCAD Technical Support.
VidCAD Installation Instructions (Stand-alone workstation)
1. Connect the VidCAD parallel or USB key to a parallel or USB port on your computer.
2. Insert your VidCAD SQL disk in your drive and the autorun should bring up the installation window you see below.
If you do not see the installation window, open the VidCAD SQL installation disk from “My Computer” and select
Setup.exe.

3. There are four steps to installing VidCAD SQL and they are listed on the VidCAD SQL Setup window. Begin with
Step one, reviewing these installation instructions in this Getting Started manual.

4. After you have reviewed the installation instruction, proceed to step 2 by selecting “Install VidCAD SQL” from the
VidCAD SQL Setup window.
5. You will be reminded to make a backup of your previous VidCAD information. If applicable, make your backups,
and then select OK.
6. Select “Next” at the VidCAD SQL InstallShield Wizard welcome screen to begin the installation process.

7. At the License Agreement window, read the License agreement and select the radio button to accept or not to accept
the license agreement. Then select “Next”.
8. In the “Select Key Type” window, select the key type you are using then select Next.

9. An “Authorization” window may display. If you have a blue USB key, enter the VidCAD SQL Codes you were
provided with the software package and select Next. If you have a black USB key or the keyless system and this
window appears, please enter 0’s for all the characters.
10. Complete the dialog and select an install option. Select Next.

11. Accept the default destination for a standard installation by selecting “Next.”
12. In the Custom Setup window, leave all default settings and select “Next.”

13. At the Ready to Install the Program window, select Back to change setup options – otherwise select “Install” to begin
installation of VidCAD SQL.
14. The “Installing VidCAD SQL” window will now appear. This process will take several minutes.

15. Select “Finish” completing the VidCAD SQL step of the install process.
16. The VidCAD SQL InstallShield Wizard will now close, leaving the VidCAD SQL Setup window open (refer to
image on step 2) and ready to begin the third step, which will install the Microsoft SQL 2005 database and associated
tools.
17. Begin the database installation by clicking on the “Install VidCAD SQL Database” text in the VidCAD SQL Setup
window.

18. Select “Next” at the dbinst - InstallShield Wizard welcome screen to begin the installation process.
19. At the License Agreement window, read the License agreement and select the radio button to accept or not to accept
the license agreement. Then select “Next”.

20. Select “Next” in the Database Options window to install a VidCAD3 instance on Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Express.
21. Select “Install” to begin the VidCAD3 instance with SQL Server Express 2005.

22. An Extracting Files window will appear, followed by a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup “Installing Prerequisites”
window. No input is required during either process.
23. A Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup “Setup Progress” window will appear followed by a Microsoft SQL Server
Management Studio Express window. No input is required during either process.

24. Select “Next” in the Database Server selection window to choose the default SQL Server that VidCAD will attach to.
25. Select “Install” to begin the final phase of the database installation.

26. A “Installing dbinst” window will appear with a status bar. No input is required during either process.
27. At the InstallShield Wizard Completed window, select “Finish” to complete the database installation process.
28. The VidCAD SQL InstallShield Wizard will now close, leaving the VidCAD SQL Setup window open (refer to
image on step 2), and ready to begin the fourth step, which will install AutoCAD 2008 OEM. Skip this step if you
will be running VidCAD on your own Full AutoCAD License.

29. Select “Install AutoCAD 2008 OEM” from the VidCAD SQL Setup window.
30. Enter your four digit OEM code which can be found on your VidCAD codes letter and then select OK.
31. The VidCAD SQL Setup window will now display “Extracting AutoCAD OEM, please wait”. No input is required
during this process.
32. The VidCAD OEM Setup window displays. Read the information and select “Next” to continue.

33. At the AutoDesk OEM Software License Agreement window, select the country you are in, then select “I Accept”
and “Next” to continue with the installation.
34. At the Select Installation Type select “Next” to accept the default Full installation type.

35. Select “Next” in the Destination Folder window to accept the default installation path.
36. At the Start Installation window select “Next” to begin the installation.

37. An Updating Systems window displays with a progress bar. This process will take several minutes to complete.
38. Complete the VidCAD OEM installation by selecting Finish on the VidCAD OEM Setup window.
39. The VidCAD OEM Setup window will now close, leaving the VidCAD SQL Setup window open (refer to image on
step 2). You can now close the VidCAD SQL Setup window.

40. To verify VidCAD SQL has installed correctly, you will first need to open the VidCAD Main Menu. Do this by
selecting the VidCAD icon on your desktop or by selecting VidCAD SQL from your programs list.
41. The VidCAD Measurement Units window will now open. Select your preferred measurement units and the Title
Block Template.
42. After your codes are entered and accepted, a New User window will open. Complete the New User information
window then select Edit in the company area.

43. Select “New” in the Company Details window.
44. Enter the company information.

45. Select “Done” from the company list.
46. Verify the user information and select “OK.”

48. The VidCAD Main Menu will now display.

6. Checking for Updates
VidCAD regularly releases updates with enhancements and patches. Information about an update and the link to download
it can be found from the VidCAD Main Menu.
Sequence:
1.
Select “Settings” from the Utilities pull down menu of the VidCAD Main Menu.
2.
Select the “Updates” tab from the Settings window.
3.
Select “Check For Updates” from the Settings window.

VidCAD will now compare your version to the latest update available. If there is an update available VidCAD will
display a link for you to download the update. If you are using the latest version, VidCAD will display a note that you
have the latest version.
5.
Prior to downloading an update you can select “View Change Log” to view the changes made with each update.
6.
If you experience any difficulty downloading an update please contact VidCAD Technical Support.
3ote: if you experience difficulties with the Check for Updates tool, you may need to modify the firewall settings on
your network or local computer. To do this you need to make an application exception in the firewall settings for
“vdpmm.exe”.

7. Maintaining Backup Files:
Overview:
You should maintain a backup plan for both your VidCAD SQL Database Files and your main VidCAD folder. Backup
plans should also include the Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\VidCAD 3 folder. They should be fully backed up at
least weekly.

Sequence:
1.
Determine the best location for storing your VidCAD Backup. Locations may include a network drive, external hard
drive, CD or DVD. Just make sure it is somewhere other than the hard drive of the computer you use for your
VidCAD operation.
2.
Once a backup location is determined, create a windows folder in that location and name it something logical (i.e.,
“VidCAD Backup January 1 2008”). In this example we will use that exact name for our backup.
3.
Use Windows Explore to navigate to C:\VidCAD and copy the entire VidCAD Directory to the backup folder created
in the previous step. This step will back up your drawings, templates, and facilities.
4.
The next step will require you stop the Microsoft SQL server. Click on Start then Control Panel.

From the Control Panel select Administrative Tools.

From Administrative Tools select Services.

From the Services window highlight SQL Server (VidCAD3) then select “Stop” from the left side of the services list.

Use Windows Explore to navigate to C:\Program Files and locate Microsoft SQL Server.
9.
Open the Microsoft SQL Server folder and copy the entire VidCAD3 folder to the backup folder created in step 2.
10. Now you must restart your Microsoft SQL Server by repeating steps 4-6 to access the Services window.

11. From the Services window, highlight SQL Server\VidCAD3, then select Start from the left side of the services list.
12. Close the Services window.
13. Your VidCAD Backup is now complete.

8. Key Distinctives of VidCAD SQL:
VidCAD SQL is based on Microsoft SQL Server (optional) upon for large installations and MSDE (Microsoft Standalone
Database Engine) for standalone users and groups of up to four users. SQL database technology is the industry standard for
robust, Enterprise-class applications. The key differences are FoxPro DBF files are operating system files and numerous
(55 files minimum for VidCAD Library and 1 Facility), whereas SQL database records are in 1 relational file managed by
Microsoft SQL Server.
Because of the differences in database technology, VidCAD SQL is:

Secure: Protected and managed access
Scaleable: Unlimited # of possible users
Extensible: Connect to other programs, such as
ordering, proposal writers, maintenance logs

Editable: All FlexiBLOCK data is stored in SQL;
therefore, you can delete unwanted versions
3-D Blockable: You can add additional 3-D block views
(e.g. rack, table, H or V modular) with a couple of mouse
clicks

Enterprise Library Merge: Bi-directional synchronization between 2 or more VidCAD locations. LM notes all the
changes each user makes, with time and date. Remote user logs into VidCAD and clicks LM to replicate new items in both
directions.
Enterprise Facility Checkin/Checkout Utility: Automated synchronization of drawing and database files. Checkout
projects from Master to workstation, locking data and drawings on Master. Checkin reverses process.

10. Getting Started with Terminology
Facilities or Projects
Usually a number of drawings representing one job that requires interconnecting
sources such as sync and routers (for example, an edit room, studio 4, master
control). A single facility, which generally consists of multiple drawings, uses a
single local database viewer (CDOC) and a SQL database server. Individual facility
data is identified in the database by its unique facility ID number which is assigned
to all Facilities when created from the VidCAD Main Menu. For example, if you
create a facility named master1 on the C drive, VidCAD will create a directory
named "master1" and a subdirectory "CDOC" (C:\master1\cdoc). All drawing files
(.DWGs) will reside in master1 and all database data will reside in the database
server.
Phantom Data
Data with drawing characteristics only. For example, you can create drawings using
VidCAD, AutoCAD, Visio or Paintbrush. This type of data contains drawing
characteristics only; there is no link to a database.
Real Data
Data that contains drawing and database characteristics, i.e., the data is linked to the
VidCAD database (i.e., data that has been transmutated).
Transmutate
The process in VidCAD that converts Phantoms (drawings) into Real data, i.e., data
that contains both drawing characteristics and database linkage.
Concept Drawings
High level drawing files that demonstrate overall design. These drawings do not
contain specific information about inputs and outputs. Usually used to prepare
overviews for management.
Diagram Drawings
Diagram drawings specifying equipment, equipment inputs/outputs, signaling,
terminals, and cables.
3-D Drawings
3-dimensional drawings displaying equipment and furniture.
ReDoIt Features
VidCAD features that allow Engineer level users to make global changes to multiple
files simultaneously. Equipment Delete, Equipment Rename, Cable Delete, Cable
Renumber, Jack Delete, and Jack Renumber are all ReDoIt commands.
Note: If you own a copy of Designer with a copy of Engineer, you will have the
capability to perform global equipment delete and rename functions.
SYSNAME
A unique identifier that VidCAD uses to keep track of each equipment or furniture
item in a facility.
CDOC
A database viewing utility specific to one facility. The purpose of the CDOC is to
keep track of data specific to your current facility. Data is identified by either
SYSNAME or Cable Number.
Path Tools
A group of tools that allow you to generate cable lengths. Path tools include: Cable
Path Create, Cable Tray Create, Path Guide Create, and Path Show/Hide.
Room Designer
(Sheet Set Manager)
VidCAD’s enhanced version of AutoCAD’s Sheet Set Manager. Room Designer
automates the creation and organizations of Rooms (sheet sets).
Room (Sheet Sets)
A group of drawings usually associated with a room. Rooms created using VidCAD
Room Designer stores names of associated drawings, automates creating new
drawings with correct templates (e.g., My Style Diagram.dwt), inserts Title Page data
into each sheet, creates a Table of Contents (TOC), manages Views of other
drawings referenced to the Room (such as Sync reference in Edit Room Sheet Set),
and plots all the sheets in the Room with just two mouse clicks.
Sheet
An individual “page” in the Room (Sheet Set) that is defined with its own name
Layout (Title block). A Sheet can only be referenced in a Sheet Set.
Layout
Named Title Block view tab on the bottom of the drawing. This takes you from the
Model Space view to the Title Block view.

your drawing data is created either in Phantom mode or Real mode (i.e., without database linkage or with database linkage,
respectively). In the initial design phase of your project, you will want to create drawings in the Phantom mode so you can
easily and quickly make changes to your drawings. However, you can create your drawings directly in Real mode, later
reverting to Phantom to use as template files.
The transmutation process creates the database links that you can use for subsequent report generation, floor plan design,
and drawing maintenance. Refer to the workflow.

Create a Facility (this is the repository for all drawings and related reports).
Create a Room Sheet Set for each room. Sheet Sets have the settings for each type of drawing (Concept, Diagram,
Rack/Architectural)
Launch the Room Sheet Set from the VidCAD Main Menu. This creates the TOC drawing and opens the Sheet
Set in VidCAD.
Fill out the Facility Properties (e.g., Facility name, address, phone and Project name and number). These Title
Block properties are automatically updated in all sheets in the Facility Sheet Set.

12. Drawings Overview
You can create three types of drawings in VidCAD: Concept, Cable Diagram, and 3-D. Concept drawings are high-level
drawing files that demonstrate overall design. Cable Diagram drawings specify equipment, equipment inputs/outputs,
signaling, terminals, and cable information. Rack or 3-D drawings display equipment and furniture layouts. All Drawings
can be created using VidCAD Room Designer.
Concept Drawings
Concept drawings are high-level drawing files that demonstrate overall design. These drawings do not contain specific
information about inputs and outputs. Concept drawings are usually used to prepare overviews for management or
customers. Depending on your method of use, equipment placed in Concept drawings can be either phantom or real data,
but because there is no input or output information on blocks created in concept drawings, cable information is only
phantom. Specifically, VidCAD uses AutoCAD polylines in Concept drawings to show signal flow.
3ote: Concept drawings do not display specific inputs and outputs. Use Diagram drawings to show input and output
information.

Cable Diagram Drawings
Cable Diagram drawings specify equipment, equipment inputs/outputs, signaling, terminals, and cable information. You
will notice in the example that there is a much greater degree of detail than in a concept, and all of the information can be
connected to the database.

Exercises Section 1: Creating a Facility and Room
Exercise 1: Creating a Facility
To create a drawing within VidCAD, you must first create a facility (project). A facility usually refers to the documentation
(drawings and database files) for systems in a single geographic location.
Caution!
Do not nest a second facility in a subfolder of an existing facility. Each facility should be created totally
independent of other facilities (e.g., c:\vidcad\projects\facility1, c:\vidcad\projects\facility2).
Do not create a facility in your VidCAD folder.
Sequence
1.
Select VidCAD Main Menu from the Start>Programs>VidCAD pulldown menu or your desktop icon.

Exercise 2: Creating a Room using VidCAD Room Designer
Putting together a drawing set is a major part of most design projects. VidCAD Room Designer is an enhanced and
automated version of AutoCAD Sheet Set Manager which is used to organize multiple drawing files into a single Room or
Sheet Set. This automated process of managing drawing sets allows you to easily create title sheets, table of contents,
manage title blocks, and also allows you to quickly prepare your drawing sets for distribution and plotting.
The Rooms (Sheet Sets) created using VidCAD Room Designer will use highly customized VidCAD Templates for the
creation of each sheet, or drawing. Drawing Template (.DWT) files can be customized to include your company logo,
preferred layout size, and other design settings.
Sequence

Highlight your new facility, change the Facility Option radio button to “Room View”, then select “New Room.”

In the New Room dialog box enter your facility’s room information and description

Select the flyout arrow on the right side of the Template field to choose a sheet set style (Imperial Style 1 is default).

Additional 1otes about using VidCAD Room Designer
VidCAD Room Designer has a default set of subsets, each of which has related templates (Concept, Diagram,
Architectural, etc.). If you want to add new subsets, you can easily do this in the Room (Sheet Set) or in the Sheet Set
Template (.DST) file. The following steps will guide you through creating additional subsets.
10. From the VidCAD Room Designer (Sheet Set Manager), right click on the Diagram subset and select “New Subset”.
11. In the Subset Properties enter Audio as the Subset name then select OK.

12. Repeat Steps 11 and 12 and create a subset named Video. When you have completed this process, your Room should
look like the image below.
13. Subsets can also be removed from the Room. Right Click on the Video Subset and select “Remove Subset”. Repeat
the process for the Audio subset. Your Room (Sheet Set) should now appear with its default subsets.
Optional Room Designer Subset configurations
VidCAD default room management style has users create a Room (sheet set) for each physical room in a facility. Each
Room would have similar subsets. You can easily select the Room from the VidCAD Main Menu using the Room View
option.

More experienced users that are familiar with modifying and selecting drawing template (DWT) files can also choose to
create a single Sheet Set for the entire facility with Rooms as Subsets. See the images below for an example of that option.

Exercise 3: Defining your drawing space
Prior to creating equipment for your drawing, you should set up your drawing to accommodate subsequent paper plots. You
do this by creating a title block and defining your work area.

From the Sheet Set Manager of the Drawing you created in Exercise 1, Right-click on the Diagram and select 1ew
Sheet...

Unlike in a Concept drawing, when you place a piece of equipment in a Diagram drawing, you can chose some, or all
of the available inputs and outputs you want to display in your drawing. There are many ways to make your selections.
You can select the “All” button and turn on all inputs and outputs. You can also select by signal type or individually
by selecting the desired signal in the available I/O display itself. In this exercise, we will select 1 input and three
outputs individually as displayed below. After you make your selections, select OK.
8.
Use your mouse to move the block to the desired location, then left click to place the block in your drawing. You can
place additional equipment blocks with the exact same configuration by left clicking again in a different location or
press Esc on your keyboard to end the equipment create command.
9.
Repeat Steps 1-7 again, but this time create a Ross Video LTD, CMA8012 distribution amplifier, using the image at
the beginning of this exercise to determine the appropriate I/O selection. When you have completed adding this second
piece of equipment, your drawing should look like the drawing from the beginning of this exercise and you are now
ready for the next exercise, Creating Phantom Cables.

Exercise 5: Creating Phantom Cables
This exercise will show you how to create Phantom cables between two pieces of equipment. When placing cables, you
will be selecting the equipment source and the equipment destination. To ensure that you successfully place a cable, it is
important that you select the endpoints of the source and destination I/Os.
Sequence
1. From the Diagram drawing you created in Exercise 4, select Cable Create from the VidCAD toolbar.
2. The Cable Create window should now be displayed in the upper left corner of your drawing. Through this window
you select the source and destination equipment and the appropriate symbols, such as the feather, J-box, jack, and
router. If you are creating a phantom cable only, there is nothing to select from the Cable Create dialog bar as the
command is already active.

3. Select an I/O from one equipment block as the source for cabling.
3ote: When placing cables, you will want to zoom in to ensure you are selecting the input or output endpoints.
4. Select an I/O from another equipment block as the destination for cabling.
The Phantom cable is created.
5. When finished selecting the destination of the cable, your drawing should look like the image below, and you are
ready to begin the transmutation process (linking the drawing data into the database).
6. Select the Esc key to exit the command.

Exercise 6: Erasing Phantom Data
Phantom data is not linked to the database; consequently, you can use AutoCAD Erase to remove Phantom data from a
drawing.
3ote: Do not use the AutoCAD Erase command to delete real (transmutated) data. To delete real data, use Cable Delete,
Equipment Delete, or Jack Delete.
Sequence
1. Select Erase from the Modify menu.
2. Select a crossing window around the data you wish to erase. In this exercise we will draw a left to right window or a
crossing window which is defined with two points: a point defining the top, left window origin and a second point
defining the bottom, right window origin.
3ote: Drawing a window from right to left will select every item that is completely enclosed by the window.
Drawing a left to right crossing window will select every item that it touches even if it is not completely enclosed by
the window.
3. Right-click the mouse command to erase the items in the crossing window from the drawing.
The selected data erases.

Exercise 7: Creating Phantom Rack Furniture
This example shows you how to insert racks into a 3-D drawing. Prior to placing furniture, however, you may want to
check the units in VidCAD Settings to ensure that you are placing furniture using the appropriate units (English or Metric).
Sequence:
1. From the Room Designer (Sheet Set Manager) of the diagram drawing you have been working on, create a new sheet
in the Architectural subset and name the sheet “A01 - Racks”.
2. Open “Racks” by double clicking on the sheet from the Room Designer.
3. Select Equipment Create from the Equipment flyout of the VidCAD Toolbar.
4. Check the “Phantom Equipment” box.
5. Type “Winsted” in the Manufacturer field and “86020” in the model field.

6. Select the 86020 with the “70Rack26” Product Type from the equipment list.
7. VidCAD will report that PhantomDOCS is active and will prompt “Pick UCS-marker <Previous_ucs>:”
8. Select the UCS icon located in the lower left-hand side of the drawing window.

equipment. The “F”, “T”, and “R” markers refer to “Front”, “Top”, and “Rear” orientation, respectively.
12. Your rack now displays with a wire frame view.

13. You are now ready to begin Transmutating equipment, cables, and furniture in the drawings you have created.
Before you begin the Transmutation process, you may want to save your phantom drawings. The process to save
your phantom drawings is covered in the next exercise.

Exercise 8: Saving Phantom Drawings
By saving a Phantom drawing, you provide the flexibility to reuse it or modify it for similar systems in the current facility
or other facilities.
When using Save DWG to Phantoms Dir, the drawing is saved to a Phantoms subdirectory located in the current facility
directory. Each facility will have its own Phantoms folder.
3ote: You should not save your drawing to a Phantom directory if you have real equipment in it (i.e., equipment that has
already been transmutated).
Sequence
1. Return to your “D01 – Diagram” drawing and repeat exercises 4 and 5 to create equipment and a cable.
2. Select Save DWG to Phantoms Dir from the VidCAD toolbar.
A VidCAD Question dialog displays, indicating that the current drawing will be saved to a Phantoms subdirectory in
your project directory.
3. A “Select a New Drawing Name” window appears. Enter a new file name or keep the default name, then click Save.
4. The Phantom drawing is now saved and can be used in this or any other project.

Section 3: Transmutation
Transmutation is the process in VidCAD that converts Phantoms (drawings) into Real data, i.e., data that contains both
drawing characteristics and database linkage.
Phantoms are data with drawing characteristics only; there is no link to a database.
Real Data contains drawing and database characteristics; the data is linked to the VidCAD database (i.e., data that has been
transmutated).
About VidCAD Transmutation
You can toggle between Phantom Mode and Real Mode for Cables and Equipment in the Phantom Settings window.
By default, VidCAD provides a dot-dash linetype when displaying Phantom equipment and a continuous linetype
when displaying Real equipment.
In a Diagram drawing, you must transmutate equipment before transmutating cables.
In a Rack drawing, you should transmutate the furniture before transmutating equipment inside the furniture.
Once your equipment or cables are in the database, you use Equipment Delete, Cable Delete or Jack Delete (not
AutoCAD Erase) to simultaneously delete data from the drawing and the database.
Real data is stored in the project's SQL database tables.
In this section, you will transmutate equipment, cables, and furniture.
Exercise 9: Transmutating Equipment
VidCAD uses SYSNAMEs to identify unique equipment items in the database. When transmutating equipment, the next
available SYSNAME is retrieved from the database. You can use this SYSNAME or enter your own.
When you have completed this exercise, your drawing should look like the image below.

Exercise 10: Transmutating Cables
VidCAD uses cable numbers to identify individual cables in the database. When transmutating cables, the next available
cable number is retrieved from the database. You can use this default number or enter your own.
3ote: The Select Cable 3umbers dialog displays with the next available cable number if the “Ask for Cable number”
option is checked in the Cable Settings dialog.
Sequence
1. Continuing with the Diagram drawing used in the previous exercise (D01 - Diagram), select Cable Settings from the
Cables flyout of the VidCAD toolbar.

2. At the Cable Settings window select “Ask for cable number” and “Edit after create” then select Ok.
3ote: Do not edit any other default cable settings.
3. Select “Phantom Cable Transmutate” from the cables flyout of the VidCAD toolbar.
A Phantom Cable Transmutate window displays, and you are prompted to select the phantom cable to transmutate.
3ote: When transmutating jacks, transmutate cables beginning on the left side of the drawing and work to the right
and from top to bottom. VidCAD assigns a signal name to each cable as it is converted. This signal name is used for
all cables in a given signal path and acts as a thread for the InterCO33ECT program.

The process for transmutating furniture and equipment in a 3-D environment is much the same as in the two-dimensional
environment.
Sequence
1. Open the 3-D drawing you created in Exercise 7 and select the “Equipment Settings” command.
2. From the 3D Equipment Settings window, select “Ask for System name” and “Edit after create”. Then select Ok.
3. Select Phantom Equip Transmutate from the VidCAD toolbar.
3ote: The order in which you transmutate furniture and equipment items in 3-D is important. If an equipment item is
placed inside a rack or rack frame, the rack or rack frame must be transmutated first, and then the equipment.
Otherwise the placement information for the equipment item will be incorrect.
4. Select All from the Phantom 3-D Transmutate Options, then select Ok.

assignment by selecting Ok.

command.

Section 4: Alternate Methods of Creating Drawings
VidCAD Room Designer is the preferred tool for creating drawings and organizing drawing sets, however, you may
encounter a situation where using the Room Designer is not needed. The exercises in this section will teach you two
alternate methods of creating new drawings.
Exercise 14: Creating a new diagram from the VidCAD Main Menu.
In this exercise you will use the “New Diagram” tool to create a new drawing in the same facility you have used in the
previous exercises.
3ote: This tool allows the creation of diagram drawings only. An alternate method of creating 3-D or Concept drawings
is covered in the next exercise.

custom reports, and can also be exported into a variety of file types.

14. Migrating from VidCAD SQL 1-2.5 to VidCAD SQL 2.9
Migrating from VidCAD 2.5 to 2.9 requires a full uninstall of all existing VidCAD Software. Why? VidCAD 2.9 is built
and programmed to run on AutoCAD 2008. VidCAD SQL 1.0 – 2.5 was built to run on AutoCAD 2005. This platform
change requires a significant change in how VidCAD operates “behind the scenes.” The migration process will take about
90 minutes. The procedures in this document will guide you through the process step by step.
Part 1: Updating and backing up your VidCAD 2.5 Data
1.
You must update you VidCAD SQL database to the latest version prior to migrating to VidCAD SQL 2.9. Download
and run the update from www.vidcad.net\vidcadsqlupdate2.zip.
2.
Determine the best location for storing your VidCAD Backup. Locations may include a network drive, external hard
drive, CD or DVD. Just make sure it is somewhere other than the hard drive of the computer you use for your
VidCAD operation.
3.
Once a backup location is determined, create a windows folder in that location and name it something logical (i.e.,
“VidCAD Backup January 1 2008”). In this example we will use that exact name for our backup.

Use Windows Explore to navigate to C:\VidCAD and copy the entire VidCAD Directory to the backup folder created
in the previous step. This step will back up your drawings, templates, and facilities.

Part 1: Backing up 12f files
Before you uninstall VidCAD 12f it is important to make a backup copy of your entire C:/VidCAD directory AND run a
Monthly Zip Utility. Both of these items will be used to convert your existing Foxpro database files into SQL database
information.

Create a folder on your desktop, network drive, etc and name the folder VidCAD V12f backup followed by the date.

Navigate to the C drive and copy the entire “VidCAD” folder from the root of C: to the backup folder you created in
Step 1.

Part 5: Facility Conversion

Navigate to your VidCAD 2002 backup folder and go in the VidCAD\Projects folder. Copy all Project folders and
paste them into C:\VidCAD\Projects.

Open your VidCAD SQL 2.9 Main Menu and select “Convert From FoxPro from the Utilities pull down menu.

Select the “Convert Facilities” tab.

Navigate the Browse for folder window to C:\VidCAD\Projects and select the first facility you wish to convert.

If you created custom 3D blocks you will need to copy those 3D blocks from your VidCAD 2002 backup folder to
your new VidCAD directory. Navigate to your VidCAD 2002 backup folder\VidCAD 2002\Cmp. Copy all files in the
Vv folder and paste them into C:\VidCAD\Library\CMP\Vv. Repeat the process for files in the Xx folder.
If you created custom connectors in VidCAD 2002 you will need to copy those files from your VidCAD 2002 backup
folder to your new VidCAD directory. Navigate to your VidCAD 2002 backup folder\VidCAD 2002\Connectors.
Copy all files in the Connectors folder and paste them into C:\VidCAD\Library\Connectors.
If you modified or created VidCAD reports or queries you will need to copy those files from your VidCAD 2002
backup folder to your new VidCAD directory. Navigate to your VidCAD 2002 backup folder\VidCAD 2002\Reports
and paste them into C:\VidCAD\Library\Reports.
