Choosing to come to the United States of America was an obvious decision for learning English, but Fumine also chose to attend college in the USA to experience the life of an American college student. Japanese Universities are very competitive, the work load is very large and the work is rigorous. Fumine looked forward to the experience of having a social life while obtaining her degree in America. The small and diverse city of Coalinga, California is exactly what Fumine was looking for when it came to her education. “Its size allows me to focus on my studies instead of wasting time shopping,” she says. “Also, the class sizes at WHC are great because they give me the ability to easily ask my professors for help.” Fumine loves the benefits given to international students at West Hills College. Not only can they have a job through work-study but the International Students Program gives wonderful opportunities for fun trips to experience California, shopping and fun. Fumine has epic goals for her life. She plans to transfer this next year to CSU Long Beach to receive her degree in Business with a minor in Hospitality & Tourism. Fumine dreams of working on a cruise ship as a dancer. She looks forward to continuing her dance training and taking an internship on a cruise ship to get closer and closer to fulfilling her dreams. The goals of this event were to bring the Career Café website to the students in a hands-on interactive display to help students become familiar with the website’s resources. The Career Cafe is a great tool for students to explore different options of career pathways, complete personality assessments, get tips on resume writing, interviewing, job searching, and much more. Thanks to the President’s mini grant program, students were provided with cappuccino and cookies as they explored the Café in the Quad. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 10 | Page FARM OF THE FUTURE Pistachio Harvest Pistachio harvest was completed on October 1. The payable total for this year’s harvest was approximately 56,000 lbs. The Farm of the Future was fortunate to have completed the harvest before the rain storms during the week of October 3. The report indicated a very clean product with less than one percent defects and insect damage. Five Points Kindergarten Students Visit the Farm of the Future Fifteen students from the Five Points Head Start Program visited the Farm on September 19. Below the children are looking at plant science students projects from Clint Cowden’s class. The children walked to the reservoir at the teachers request as the students had been in the bus for some time and needed some exercise. Therefore, everyone hiked to the reservoir to look at the ducks and the fish. Anytime the ducks see people on the reservoir bank they make a beeline for the people expecting food. The ducks were not disappointed and the children had a good time feeding the ducks and looking at the fish that also gathered to get any grain that made it to the water. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 11 | Page The next stop was a visit to the Rodeo Arena to see the stock. The children had the opportunity to get a close up look at bulls, bucking horses, roping steers and goats. The kindergartners all had great fun feeding the huge animals especially when the animals stuck their heads through the feed bunk bars. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 12 | Page The students and staff thanked WHC for hosting them and they all returned to the bus and found their seats in a very orderly fashion, getting their seatbelts all in place, before they moved the bus. The students were very well mannered and a joy to have at the farm. They promised to visit again. Farm of the Future staff and students visit the Coalinga Chevron Solar to Steam Project Approximately twenty students and staff attended the public information event explaining the large solar steam project constructed West of the Farm of the Future. The group attended the presentation and went on the walking tour of the plant. Below the students listen to Chevron employees explain the various aspects of the plant. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 13 | Page Agriculture Science II Project Update As of October 7 the project is estimated to be approximately 55% complete. The underground mechanical and electrical work is progressing well. Final grading on the parking lots along Gale Avenue is nearing completion in preparation for the paving. The East and West fire lanes are also getting close with final grading underway in preparation for pouring valley gutters. Eventually these lanes will be paved in conjunction with the other areas at the South end of the arena. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 14 | Page Building 500 Footings and wall foundations and now poured and the under slab work is completed in preparation for pouring the slabs for the shops. The new truck has a Tier III Cummins engine which will be meet air quality engine requirement to 2023. This is one factor that guided the selection of this late model truck for the Farm. It will provide service for a good number of years. In addition to the truck, a 32 foot gooseneck trailer was purchased to enable moving two forklifts at one time. The trailer is equipped with three spring assisted ramps that allows the loading and unloading of a forklift to be done quickly and safely. The combination of truck and trailer will be used to move forklifts to locations around the district and also transport the mobile welding trailer to the various locations for classes. Currently two forklifts are needed for each of the classes; these offerings culminate with students receiving certification as forklift operators once they pass all of the requirements. 300 Cherry Lane - Coalinga, CA 93210 - (559) 934-2000 16 | Page PERSONNEL Veronica Rosales Veronica Rosales was born in Mexico City. When she was sixteen years old, she moved to the city of Mendota. She attended Tranquility High School (Class of ’91). Veronica enrolled at WHC Coalinga in August ’91 and graduated from WHCC with her AA in Business Administration (’93). Veronica was working as a dispatcher at a tomatoes cannery (a seasonal job) when an opportunity to work at the Residence Hall at WHCC was posted. Veronica decided to apply, and in 2001 she became a Housing th Coordinator. She is now entering her 11 year working at the Residence Hall. One of the things she really enjoys is meeting and living with students from different countries and learning their cultures. Also, when everybody arrives, they get treated like the members of her own family. Veronica gets along so well with all the girls that they call her “Mom.” The other thing that she likes while working at the Residence Hall is going on trips with the Internationals students. One memorable trip was the two-day trip to San Diego. The group went to Balboa Park and after that they went to eat Japanese food as a family. Her second great experience was Relay for Life. The Residence Hall has participated for two years and each year they have had something different and learned something new. Outside of her work she loves to meet with friends to go to the movies, to eat in restaurants or just to talk. And she always loves to visit her parents taking them on trips and taking them to places where they have never been before.
