Dear Congregants,
Springtime and Passover, what a beautiful time of
the year.
Passover has a special place all of its own in
Jewish Life. A Family Friendly Second Seder will be held at
Shaare Zedek on April 23 with Rabbi Alan Bright and
Chazan Yosi Even-Hen and their families.
This spring is the beginning of very special times at
Shaare Zedek. The months of May and June are filled with
exciting events.
Our Shul is hosting an Interfaith Celebration for World
Peace on May 4. We will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Week with an
Art Exhibition by Dorothy Grostern in the lobby from May 1 to May 7.
Dorothy will be a special guest at the Shabbat services on May 7.
On the weekend of May 13 -15, there will be a Shabbaton with
Rabbi Dr. Norman Solomon. Read all about it on page 13.
Sisterhood Torah Fund Event and Installation of a new Board
on May 25 is always a special evening.
Please remember to buy Raffle tickets and also try to sell them. The
date of the Draw is June 22. With the purchase of a $150 ticket you will receive
2 tickets to the Viennese Dessert and Coffee reception.
I wish all of our congregants and their families a very Happy Passover.
The true spirit of this Passover Festival is Freedom.

Near
the beginning
of the Seder,
the Haggadah
features the
Ha Lachma
Anya,
displaying the
matza as both the symbol of affliction and of hope. Since virtually the entire Haggadah is compiled of passages in Hebrew, it
is noteworthy that this section
is composed in Aramaic. In fact,
with the possible exception of
some medieval songs near the
end of the Seder (the Chad
Gadya, for example), and the
L'shem Yichud introductions
found in Sephardic and Hassidic
editions, Ha Lachma Anya
stands out as the only Aramaic
text in the entire Passover
Seder. Also, it precedes the
explanations and
interpretations given to matza
later in the Seder, anticipating
and replicating their themes
and messages. Why was this
Aramaic passage necessary, and
why was it included?
After Hebrew ceased to
be the lingua franca of our
ancestors, Aramaic took its
place as the vernacular of many
Jews. Dialects of Aramaic were
spoken by Palestinian and
Babylonian Jews well into the
common era, as attested by
Talmudic literature and several
well-known prayers in the
liturgy, particularly the Kaddish,
Y'qum Purqan and Kol Nidre.
The inclusion of Ha Lachma
Anya in the Haggadah is
representative of the
contributions of Diaspora Jewry
to the treasury of Jewish
civilization, and to the Seder in
particular.
It is the statement of
post-Mishnaic world Jewry that
Passover was for them much
more than just a traditional
historical and religious
reminiscence. It was nothing
less than the formal expression
of their anguish in dispersion,
and their hope for personal and
collective redemption in days to
come.
Just as each individual is
obligated to personally identify
with the Exodus (B'chol Dor
Vador), so, too, has each
generation of Jews drawn
inspiration from the story of
redemption past and translated
that hope in contemporary
idiom into the quest for
redemption to come.
It is clear to all that we
still live in an unredeemed
world, and that each generation
seeks hope and reassurance
from the miraculous survival of
the Jewish People to go on living
as Jews, even in the face of
adversity.
There are certainly
modern plagues that besiege us.
We cannot sprinkle blood on
our doorposts to protect ourselves from the bloodshed in
our streets and terrorism in our
world. We cannot merely call
upon Divine Retribution to
eradicate hatred, bigotry, malice
and discrimination. There is no
manna from Heaven that will
5
help us overcome hunger and
poverty in a world of plentiful
resources. And we have no
Moses to unite the fragmented
Jewish People and lead us all
forward into an era of
redemption.
The real power of the Ha
Lachma Anya lies in its
concluding words: Hash'ta
av'dei; l'shana ha-ba'a b'nei
chorin, “This year we are still in
bondage; next year may we be
truly free!" The celebration of
Passover in our unredeemed
world is intended to inspire us
to work diligently toward our
own redemption, with the
assurance that God will be with
us and bless our efforts. Each
generation of Jews has had its
own affliction, its own Egypt, its
own bondage and its own
plagues to overcome. It is
because we live in an
unredeemed world that we
need the encouragement of
Passover to uplift our spirits
and help us go forward toward
a better world and the
redemption we seek.
Each generation of Jews
makes its own addition to the
saga of Passover. May our generation make use of our many
blessings to hasten redemption
for all.
On behalf of Myself,
Elizabeth and the family, I wish
you all a Hag Kasher V’Sameach
– A happy, peaceful and spiritually uplifting Passover.
Rabbi Bright
Dear
Chaverim,
By now, our
snowbirds will
have returned
from warmer
climates, an
exodus from
the south and
a return home
to the north.
As Passover approaches, I urge
you all to take in the beautiful
rituals that come along with the
"Season of Our Freedom". At
times, it may not seem like
Freedom with the cleaning and
the preparation of our homes to
welcome Passover. Then comes
the the shopping, primarily for the
special foods, followed by the
cooking and preparint for the
Seders. The the guests will arrive
to take part in the celebrations
and enjoy the good food.
us, such as the fact that we have
a home that we must clean and a
kitchen in which to prepare our
food. The great variety of foods
that rival any place in the world,
and the ability to purchase such
and the ability to host family and
friends and even strangers are all
blessings.
As I continually tell my students
that work is not a punishment. If
we harness the power that work
brings with it, we get so much out
of it. I fully agree that hard labour
is undesirable, but we must not
confuse work with hard labour.
Turn necessary actions of disdain
and dread into rewarding tasks.
I bless each of you with the gift of
work!
Chag Sameach and a wonderful
summer to each of you.
YOSI
BIKKUR CHOLIM
The word mitzvah means command,
although it is sometimes incorrectly
translated as good deed. The mitzvah of
bikkur cholim, visiting the sick, is a classic
example of an action which is both a
mitzvah and a good deed. This mitzvah is
considered an honoured part of our
tradition.
Please advise the Rabbi’s office
(514 - 484-1122 ext. 110) if you are ill or if
you know of a congregant or a member of
a congregant’s family who is ill. Your call
can go a long way towards helping
individuals through a particularly difficult
period.
Rabbi Bright may call
them or visit their
bedside or generally
be available to them at
their time of need.
Please help us to serve
you.
If we appreciate the "work" that
we have been granted, I believe
we can appreciate the blessings
that have been bestowed upon
1) Chag Ha-Aviv - The holiday of spring; 2) Chag Ha-Matzot - The holiday of matzot; 3) Chag Ha-Pesach The holiday of Pesach; 4) Zman Cheiruteinu - The season of our freedom.
Each of these names emphasizes a different aspect of the holiday.
"Chag Ha-Aviv" (" Holiday of the Spring" ). Pesach is always celebrated in the spring. This is the reason for
the Hebrew leap year, which is an extra month, in order that Pesach will always come in the spring. There are
seven leap years in every nineteen year cycle. This adjusts the Hebrew-Lunar year (354 days) to coincide with
the solar year (365 days). Thus Pesach always occurs in the spring.
"Chag HaMatzot" (" Holiday of Matzot" ). During the entire eight days (seven days in Israel) of Pesach, we are
not permitted to eat leavened bread -- only Matzah. In the Torah the holiday is usually called Chag HaMatzot.
"Chag Ha-Pesach" (" Holiday of Pesach" ). Pesach literally means "Pass-over." The Torah tells us that when
G-d brought the tenth and last plague upon the Egyptians, by killing every Egyptian first-born, G-d passed-over
the Jewish homes. In commemoration of this miracle, the holiday is called "Pesach" - "Pass-over." The
Passover sacrifice is also called "Korban Pesach."
"Z'man Cheiruteinu" (" Season of our Freedom" ). Pesach is the holiday in which the Jewish people attained
their freedom after 210 years of living and being enslaved in Egypt.

A Guten
Yom Tov to
all our
Shaare
Zedek
Congregants
and your
Families!
Pesach is
upon us and
with it all
the preparations required. Your Board of
Directors has decided to embrace
challenges, learn from them and take
action. The world is full of great ideas and
we have spent the last several months
preparing a myriad of very impressive
programs for you all to enjoy.
A wonderful Sisterhood
Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat Dinner
was the first event following our Special
General Meeting. The ladies of the
Sisterhood did an outstanding Kabbalat
service and served an amazing dinner to
a sold out crowd. Yasher Koach to Carole
Burke and Ellen Pesner Co-Presidents of
the Sisterhood.
Chanukah was celebrated in
grand style with The Amazing Todsky,
magician, along with a Craft corner
making Menorahs. Delicious latkes,
salads, and sufganiot were served. A great
time was had by all who crowded the
Davine Hall. Thanks must be expressed to
Lloyd Kohen, Lili Yesovitch and our
Cantor Yosi Even-Hen.
In January we attended a most
enjoyable and learning Tu B’Shevat
Seder. Rabbi Alan Bright and Cantor Yosi
led us in the reading of the Yom Tov
prayers. The rituals were explained
during which we enjoyed glasses of wine
of different colours, along with various
fruits and vegetables. Once again a
sumptuous Shabbat dinner was
presented. Thanks must go to Lili
Yesovitch who was responsible for
choosing the menu. The food was
delicious.
Shabbat Across Canada was
presented on March 5, with a lively
discussion “What is Jewish Mysticism?
Where did it all start?” led by Rabbi
Bright. This took place after Shabbat
morning services, during a lovely
Kiddush. Thank you Sarah Polsky for your
participation in making this
program a success.
Purim was a most noisy and
thoughtful holiday. We prepared
Shaloch Manot for our members’
families and friends. They contained
great goodies and were beautifully
presented. The reading of the Megillah
was followed by Mad Science who
presented their newest event “Up, Up
and Away”. The evening closed with a
menu that consisted of hamentaschen,
cotton candy and popcorn…it was
terrific. Thanks must be expressed to
Lloyd Kohen for his outstanding
volunteerism and once again to Cantor
Yosi.
On April 11, 2016 members
and friends were entertained with a
smashing Bingo night. Sid Rath planned
this evening, applying for the permit,
getting us the Bingo game and all the
accessories that we needed to be able
to play, as well as being the caller. This
is a wonderful way for us all to
socialize with our members and
friends. A fun time was enjoyed by all.
Thank you Sid Rath.
Passover will see us
celebrating Pesach with a Family
Friendly Seder on the second night,
right here at Shaare Zedek
Congregation. Rabbi Alan Bright,
Cantor Yosi Even-Hen and Rochelle
Ross have planned a beautiful and
meaningful Seder for families. We are
sure that with our members’ active
participation we will have a most
exciting, learning and enjoyable
evening.
On Wednesday, May 4, Shaare
Zedek will be hosting the Interfaith
Celebration for World Peace. This
major event will bring together
members of all world religions. The last
time this event was held more than
seven hundred people attended. You
should plan to be there.
The week of May 1, 2016 will
see us observing Holocaust
Remembrance week. In our lobby will
be an exhibit of paintings by Dorothy
Grostern depicting some of her
thoughts, after participating in the
March of the Living. On that Shabbat,
May 7, we will have a very special
morning with participation from
Dorothy herself and Gabby Samra the
lovely daughter of Sarah and Daniel
11
Samra, who was on the March of the
Living. A special Kiddush will follow
services. Thank you Marion Caplan for
suggesting and producing this very meaningful program.
Our amazing Shabbaton with
Rabbi Dr. Norman Solomon, on May 13,
14 and 15, should be truly outstanding.
This program was produced by our
Religious Committee Chair, Sarah Polsky.
Thank you Sarah for your true dedication
to Shaare Zedek and your creativity and
expertise. There is much more
information in the Koleinu so please read
and register as soon as possible. My
heartfelt thanks to the Topor and Druker
families for their very generous
Sponsorship of this program.
June 15, 2016 is our Annual
General Meeting and we hope to see you
all in attendance to support our hard
working Board of Directors.
June 22, 2016 will be the evening
of our Annual Raffle, the Fund Raising
Event of the season that allows us to
present all the wonderful and educational
programs we do. Your participation is
essential in both purchasing and selling
tickets. Then enjoy the lovely Viennese
Desserts and coffees we are excited to
present. My deepest appreciation goes
out to the devoted Committee, Jack
Cooperberg, Chair, Manny Vineberg,
Debby Vineberg, Shirley Lerman, and Ben
Topor. Thanks must go to the Dorel
Group, especially Manon, for all their
outstanding participation.
The Passover Seder teaches us
that freedom is precious and it is living a
life of constant growth and always living
up to our potential. May you all enjoy
good health, your families and your
friends, during this glorious time.
We are all hard at work to make
Shaare Zedek THE Congregation to
belong to. We need all our members to
participate by attending our events and
by volunteering. Each of us is a precious
treasure for our Shul.
Sincerely,
Nancy Cooperberg, President
I am pleased to report that our Tu B'Shevat Seder continues to grow every year, even in winter. This January,
approximately sixty-five people came out to participate in Shaare Zedek's Tu B'Shevat Seder. This was followed by
Shabbat Shira, when we had the pleasure of hearing Raphael Even-Hen chant the Haftorah. Yasher koach to
Raphael Even-Hen on a Haftorah reading that continues to be praised at end of February. Special thanks goes out
to Lili Yesovitch for arranging a delicious dinner and outstanding kiddush. We take the opportunity to thank JNF
for its continued support.
If you want to begin your day positive, prepared and courageous, I highly recommend attending our shacharit
services. If you need to decompress after a hectic day before walking into the house, I suggest attending the
mincha/ma'ariv services. As we become adept at the prayers and meditations, we develop focus and clarity. It
assists us in finding what is important in life and where to direct our energies. On April first, the Monday - Friday
morning minyanim are moving to 7:30AM. Evening services remain at 6PM.
At this time we are looking forward to Pesach and Shavuot, festivals of freedom and of receiving the law. Shaare
Zedek will be holding a Family/Youth Seder on the Second night of Passover with Rabbi Bright and Cantor
Even-Hen and their families, and Rochelle Ross. I encourage everyone to attend services, to participate, to join the
kiddushim, and to say hello.
In May don't miss the Friday through Sunday Shabbaton with Oxford and Cambridge scholar, author and
philosopher, Dr. Normon Solomon. He will be discussing selected topics relevant to our times from his book,
Torah From Heaven. A Reconstruction of Faith.
On behalf of Dr. Michael Wasser, Dr. Morris Wechsler, Eli "Buddy" Manis, Allan Zuckerman, Larry Wexler, Sondra
Schwartz and myself, we wish you and your families a freilach and kosher Pesach.

My name is Adam Lang and I am a student at Herzliah High School. I am having my Bar

big day. This past summer was very special for my family and me because we visited Israel. I
travelled the country and I got to spend time with my extended family in Israel. The
experiences and memories I have from that summer are ones I will never forget. I love all
sports but hockey is my biggest passion. I also enjoy playing basketball, football and video
games. I look forward to celebrating my Bar Mitzvah in May with my family and friends.

excited to go back to Camp B’nai Brith of Ottawa this summer. I love spending time with
my family and friends. Yosi has made my Bar Mitzvah lessons both interesting and fun,
and am looking forward to celebrating this important time in my life with everyone.

There's still time to join us for the last two meetings before the summer break. Since October we have enjoyed a
great diversity of reading. "The Last Of The Curlews" by Fred Bodsworth, a haunting creation of the last
migration of the mighty and now extinct Artic Curlew. "Unbroken", by Laura Hillenbrand, the WW11 true story
of Louis Zamperini, former Olympic track star who spent and survived almost 3 years in Japanese prisoner camps.
"Boston Girl", by Anita Diamont, an oral autobiography from a ground-breaking 88 year old to her
grand-daughter. On March 14, "White Dog Fell From The Sky", by Eleanor Morse, about
apartheid in South Africa, loyalty and redemption.
On Monday, May 9 at 1:30 we hope to have visiting author/film-maker Gina Roitman conduct the
review of "The Storied Life Of A.J. Fikry" by Gabrielle Zevin, an homage to the love of books
and booksellers.
On Monday, June 6 at 1:30 we will discuss "Larry's Party", by Carol Shields, a
highly acclaimed novel about an ordinary man with a talent for creating labyrinths and where that leads.
We will make suggestions for next season's books at this meeting.
The cost per session is $5.
Good books, coffee, sweets and lively camaraderie. We welcome new members with open arms.

Prohibition of Chametz on Pesach:
On Pesach it is prohibited to possess chametz (leaven). All chametz that will not be eaten or burned before Pesach must be sold to a
non-Jew. All chametz utensils that will not be thoroughly cleaned by then, are stored away in closets or rooms while preparing for
Pesach. The storage area is locked or taped-shut, and leased to a non-Jew at the time of the sale.
There are many legal intricacies in this sale, thus, only a competent rabbi should be entrusted with its execution. Cantor Yosi EvenHen acts as our agent both to sell the chametz to the non-Jew on the morning before Pesach starts and also to buy it back the evening
after Pesach ends.
Locking your chametz away and giving Cantor Yosi Even-Hen the Signed Chametz Contract is an easy way of observing one of the
most important laws in the Torah. (Contract follows below).
Chametz, which remains in the possession of a Jew over Pesach, may not be used, eaten, bought or sold even after Pesach.
PLEASE NOTE
All contracts must be returned to the office no later than 12:00PM THURSDAY APRIL 21, 2016
DELEGATION OF POWER FOR SALE OF CHAMETZ
Please cut along the dotted line below and return lower section to Cantor Yosi Even-Hen
…….……………………………………………………………….………………………………………
I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Cantor Yosi Even-Hen to act in my place and stead, and on
my behalf to sell all Chametz possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic Law (e.g. Chametz, possible Chametz, and all kinds of Chametz mixtures).
Also Chametz that tends to harden and adhere to inside surfaces of pans, pots, or cooking utensils, the
utensils themselves, and all kinds of live animals and pets that have been eating Chametz and mixtures
thereof.
Cantor Yosi Even-Hen is also empowered to lease all places wherein the Chametz owned by me may
be found, particularly at the address/es listed below, and elsewhere.
Cantor Yosi Even-Hen has full right to appoint any agent or substitute in his stead and said substitute shall have full right to sell and lease as provided herein.
