AQUATOPIA KiBu-15
.. AQUATOPIA KiBu-15 an artistic idea for public space PartiCipation AND ENVIRONMENT water + plastic + waste ART AND SCIENCE The goal of this project is to combine art and science by creating a platform, which focuses on water and waste. Invited organizations, artists and scientists will create spaces and activities that foster a sensitive and critical look at the topic. Ideas of “experimental research” and “learning by DOING “ are implemented through preparatory workshops, during the construction and the time that the submarine will be installed in public space. { Children and teenagers, as well as project partners and the general public are invited to ACTIVELY EXPLORE their environment and show the results of their research in our submarine. The content and the format of some parts of the structure are determined by the development of the project and the participation of the population. Other parts will be determined and assembled by invited artists. This evolving system and its contents will be available at www.aquatopia.at throughout the year and exhibited live in public space in the summer of 2013. 2 THE SUBMARINE The RESEARCH SUBMARINE AQUATOPIA KiBü15 is an object, a mean of transportation, which is usually not seen in the urban landscape; it is exotic, something unexpected; a shape that attracts attention, perhaps even a little disturbing and therefore interesting. A submarine is embossed with ambivalent associations, connotating the negative sides of human history, such as war - but on the other hand also the spirit of discovery and great visions. In the context of the art project, children, young people and adults are invited to reflect on their lives and their community inside and outside of the water. With this in mind, our one-month installation should steer { the focus on the UN Children’s Rights Convention and the right to a livable environment (Article 24) as well as participation (Article 12) in the common heritage of mankind and development. Artists, scientists and local actors are invited to participate and/ or organize research workshops. Rhinewater Purification Plant Hans Haacke_1972 3 Summer is here! It‘s wonderfully warm outside and the fountain at Karmeliterplatz in Graz invites the passer-by to refresh themselves by putting their feet in the cooling water. Children splash around and enjoy discovering the inner spaces of the submarine. The research submarine AQUATOPIA KiBü15 is an art installation that will be displayed in and around the fountain: a provocation and at the same time an invitation to perceive common space from a different angle. The public square can be used in a playful way and at the same time can be a space for curiosity, creativity and learning. 4 INTERIOR SPACES Invited artist will design the interior spaces. Archive and laboratory The archive provides diverse information about water and our environment. The laboratory supports the research and experiments of the workshops. Bridge Radars visualize technical facts about infrastructures, consumption of water and production of waste. Crews mess for various discussions and spontanious gatherings Observatory Scenes of the urban subterranean waters can be seen through a periscope. Cabin Visitors and participants can relax and rest. Engine room Machines and engines show the path of water: From the clouds to the spring, through the pipes of the water supply and back to the sea. 5 CONSTRUCTION 1. STRUCTURE A scaffolding structure (Layher allaround) enables the construction of various spaces and uses. The usable area of approximately 100 square meters is laid out over three floors. The shell of the submarine is shaped by curved aluminum rods, which are mounted into the scaffolding and carry the outer covering made of plastic bottles. Dimensions Length: 11.35 m Width: 4.58 m Height: 5.50 m Project sketches Jasna Kuljuh and Daniela Brasil _2012 6 2. MATERIALS The submarine will be built out of empty plastic bottles plus various materials and elements that are linked to the water consumption and supply system of the city. waterlab Aquatopia project room IZK_Kronesgasse_2012 7 WORKSHOPS PREPARATORY WORKSHOPS the interventions of the artists. In collaboration with local schools and universities children The visitors are invited to bring their own garbage (plastic and students discuss their living environment in numerous bottles) to contribute and help finish the walls. workshops. These are developed and organized in collaboration with teachers, artists, researchers and qualified personnel of the Kinderbüro. From October 2012 to April 2013 the workshops will be developed in cooperation with potential partners. The main focus lies on everyday life and on the living environment of children, in particular water ways and water consumption, as well as the waste production of the children’s households. The experience will be recorded and objects will be assembled. These will be displayed inside the submarine and eventually furbishing some of the rooms. PUBLIC RESEARCH LAB Workshops during the exhibition period: During the month of exhibition the research workshops will revolve around the children‘s living environment. In one workshop, children can craft fish, other aquatic animals and plants out of plastic packaging. In another workshop, the children / teenagers get the chance to map water infrastructures, sewage and disposal bins, considering waste reduction and water quality. They will learn how much waste is produced in the city and how much water is consumed. This data can be used to assess the waste and consuption of their own household. The resulting drawings, Setting The interior of the submarine will be decorated with the models, charts and “mind maps” will be displayed in the submarine. objects produced by the kids during the workshops and with Water collection Helene Thümmel_2012 8 PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS/ ACTIVITIES 1. AQUATOPIA: AN EXTRACT OF THE WATER LABORATORY OF OUR DAILY LIVES In AQUATOPIA, students are invited to experiment with artistic research methods focusing on three main topics: Resources, Infrastructures and Water Consumption. As crew of an imaginary submarine, we will travel into the water pipes, tubes and reservoirs; rivers and lakes; water bottles and bath tubes. Water samples will be collected, we will observe their color and transparency, find out with what pressure and speed they ravel from the Alps, through our houses and then back to the sea. In addition we will hold interviews and go on excursions, we will be part of an underwater journey looking for answers to simple and also unrealistic questions: . What does the path that water moves through look like . Where does it come from and where does it go? . How much water do I consume daily? How heavy is it? . Can light become a moving drawing filtered by water?... Based on those thoughts, experiences, drawings and collected data, we will imagine a utopian world, where the relations between man and water go beyond the limits of reality. Where does water disappear to when we flush? What happens in the engine room? The aim of this workshop is to determine the urban water supply in the school environment. The young participants should be active researchers and learn how to formulate questions and how to look for answers in their immediate area. Employees of the school, from the janitor to the school board, will be interviewed and provide access and insight to the water system of the school. The gathered information serves as base for the second half of the workshop where, using design, a three-dimensional map of the municipal water system is built. The map will not only transfer knowledge, but also leave room to articulate other questions and experiences. Workshop_Concept_Sketch Catherine Grau_2012 13 2. WATER: HOW DOES IT WORK AT SCHOOL? THOSE WHO TRAVEL IN WATER The children create characters for stories that will be on display in the cabin of the submarine of the Aquatopia project. During two three-hour sessions, the kids will be engaged in activities that will help them imagine floating objects that come into their homes through the water supply. These will be the inspiration for creating fictional characters for their own stories. The activities will focus on elements, debris or objects transported within the waters of Graz, following the path of the melting water from the mountains, through rivers and lakes, passing by their houses and going back out the country and into the ocean. For these little floating objects, personal, emotional and physical characteristics will be created. A strong environmental awareness will be attached to this playful geography-art class. At the end of the sessions each kid will have developed the outline of a possible character and some criteria for the creation of a full local myth on water creatures. As for the kids they will have fun and learn about story telling, geography and sustainability.
