VEMMA: DON’T
BELIEVE THE HYPE
BY CALVIN GIL
EDITOR IN CHIEF
If you are socially
active within North Shore
Community College, you may
have heard of a Vemma, a
multi-level marketing company.
Vemma is starting to gain a
foothold at the school, with its
advocates talking about it to
everybody who will listen. If
you encounter one of them, they
will probably tell to you about
how you can join the company
and “start your own business,”
how easy it is to make lots of
money through Vemma, and
they will most likely try to get
you to drink and promote
Vemma’s energy drink, Verve.
This kind of pitch certainly
sounds very appealing, but it is
not nearly as good as it sounds.
With a bit of research on how
Vemma, and multi-level marketing companies work in general, it is easy to see that
Vemma does not live up to its
hype. Like most companies of
its kind, it is little more than a
glorified pyramid scheme, with
an unsustainable business
model that is highly unlikely to
make you very much money in
the long run, as statistics
released by Vemma themselves
show. Getting involved with the
company is a bad idea, as the
following sections will make
abundantly clear.
After hearing about
Vemma from one of their associates, via a very lengthy and
unconvincing sales pitch, I
decided to do some research on
the company, as it seemed like a
very shady operation. After
looking at Vemma’s company
website, along with several of
its affiliates, I got a better idea
of what the company’s business
model really was. To put it simply, you have to buy a product
to join Vemma, and buy more of
that product each month to
remain active. The site strongly
urges you to buy a Vemma affilCONTINUED ON PAGE 6
COMIC BOOK READING
BY LYDIA WAHL
PENNON FACULTY
Comic books come
across as a hobby but they can
actually be a great source of literature. It is surprising to find
the amount of variety that comic
book topics span. They can be a
great substitute for people who
do not generally like to read.
With short text and excellent
art, a comic issue can help people get into a story line and from
there, more engaged in reading.
As with books, there are comic
books for all ages and genres.
Comic books for children can be
a great way to start them off
with reading and transition to
chapter books. The cost of
comic books is also easy on the
wallet and they are just as readily available as books. Comic
books are based on many familiar characters and will also
introduce several new ones.
“The Walking Dead”
has lately been one of the most
recognizable comic book titles
because of the AMC TV show.
The show originates from a
comic book published by Image
Comics. Comic books have
spoilers and elaborated or alternative plots for beloved characters. There are other shows like
“Fringe” and “Once Upon a
Time” that have also published
alternative story lines through
comics.
Authors such as
Stephen King and Robert
Jordan have books that have
been translated into comics.
Some authors have comics, such
as Stephen King’s “The Dark
Tower” series and Jodi Picoult’s
rendition of the “Wonder
Woman” story that have only
been published as comic books.
There are also abridged reprintings of classics like Jane
Austen’s
“Sense
and
Sensibility.” Comic books make
more variety of plots available
for new and old characters,
retellings of classics, or an
entirely new story. They can
stretch or compact plots, like the
late Robert Jordan’s fourteen
book series “The Wheel of
Time” and can provide vivid
imagery to substitute descriptive text. “The Wheel of Time”
series is being published by
Dynamite Entertainment and
are about half way through the
first book at issue thirty five.
The prequel, “New Spring” was
compacted into eight issues.
Comics are able to capture
descriptive writing through art
and text and condense character
dialogue and plots. Comic
books have shorter text and
descriptive visuals, providing
most of the details written in a
book. “A Connecticut public
library reported tremendous
positive publicity as a result of
introducing comic books to the
collection, stating, ‘Nothing the
library had done before had so
captured people’s imagination
and attention,’” (Michael R.
Lavin, 1998). Libraries and
bookstores often carry comic
books in the form of Trade
PaperBacks (TPB), which are a
collection of several comic
issues in a bound book.
Children who claim
they “hate to read,” may find
themselves at home in a comic
store. There are several children’s characters available from
the Muppets to Ben10 in comic
book issues. A wide variety of

VETERAN’S CORNER
The last time I saw
Colin he had all of his stuff
packed up in his truck and he
was getting ready to head out to
Michigan. I wanted to say goodbye and hear about how the
company had so badly messed
his paperwork up. He told me
his story and I promised I would
help anyway I could. I shook his
hand, gave him the $60 I had in
my wallet for gas money and I
said goodbye. The other day I
told him he needed to quit worrying about the past, what's
done was done and it was time
to move on. He said "yea you’re
right". He admitted that he was
having a hard time and that he
missed his brothers and the
adrenaline rush of the military. I
said "Colin all you did was complain the whole time we were in
Afghanistan" he laughed. But
that was his way, a comedian
through and through always
looking to make other people
smile and laugh. And he did just
that 99% of the time. He had
hilarious stories!! About late
night drunken debauchery in
downtown Colorado Springs
showing up with black eyes and
a cast to formation! I had a soft
spot for Colin and all his peers
for that matter. These young
men I knew would leave for
Fitness Training (FT) Carson
boys and come back men,
altered, distorted, not the same.
Colin was no exception to that,
he had his troubles but he was a
true friend to his battle buddies.
He had no desire for office politics and ass kissing. I admired
that about him. Colin was a
tough man; he broke his neck in
a vehicle rollover and still
helped his battle buddies out of
the cougar. He was selfless and
would take a bullet for his peers.
And I truly feel the most for his
fellow soldiers that served next

world is a little greyer without
Colin. I love you man and I will
never forgive those that did you

importantly I will never forget
you or your memory. You will

story will be told, I promise you.

PREVALENCE OF ADULT
ONSET DIABETES AMONG
HISPANIC AMERICANS
BY YU SHAN HU
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Diabetes is a growing
health concern facing Hispanic
populations in the United States
– as of 2010, approximately
8.3%,
or
25.8
million
Americans have diabetes. This
number is growing at an alarming rate. In 2010 alone, 1.9 million new diabetics were diagnosed with adult onset diabetes.
Recent surveys show that
Mexican Americans are twice
as likely as non-Hispanic whites
be diagnosed with diabetes.
According to the American
Diabetes Association, 13.3%
Mexican Americans and 13.8%
Puerto Ricans adults are diagnosed diabetics, making them
the highest at risk for developing diabetes. Overall, 9.5% of
all Latino Americans have diabetes, many more remain undiagnosed.
Diabetes can be broken
down into types: Type 1 is
inherited and typically diagnosed in childhood. Type 1 diabetics are unable to produce
insulin, a hormone necessary for
glucose metabolism. Type 2,
also known as adult-onset diabetes also has a genetic component, but it is frequently triggered in adulthood by dietary
and lifestyle choices. Type 2
diabetics develop resistance to
insulin, which eventually leads
to impaired glucose absorption.
If the sugar is not metabolized
by the body, excess sugars in
the bloodstream causes inflammation in the eyes, nerves, arteries, and kidneys. Aside from
genetics, being overweight and
having a sedentary lifestyle are
major risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes.
If left
untreated, diabetes can result in
blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy, or even amputation.
As of 2008, Hispanics males
were 1.6 times more likely to
start treatment for diabetes
related terminal renal disease
compared to white males.
Hispanics were also 1.5 times
more likely to die from diabetes
compared to whites.
These unfavorable outcomes
result from lack of access to
healthcare, health literacy, and
cultural factors. In 2013, 29.1%
of Hispanics Americans do not
have health insurance, compared to 11.1% non-Hispanic
whites.
Without health insurance, Hispanic Americans are
unlikely to receive routine care,
annual exams, dietary and nutrition consultations that could
prevent and properly treat the
onset of diabetes.
Health literacy is yet
another issue that must be
addressed.
Many Hispanic
Americans are simply unaware
that their dietary and lifestyle
habits may be contributing to
the onset of diabetes. To remedy this issue, the Office of
Minority Health has developed
Spanish educational brochures
to help Latinos make better
dietary and lifestyle choices.
Local non-profit, Fair Foods,
Inc. also provides several
pounds of fresh produce for a
two dollar donation to encourage healthy eating here in the
Boston
area
greater
(http://www.fairfoods.org/dolla
rbag.html).
At our clinic,
Latino patients are offered diabetic education sessions with
Spanish speaking nurse practitioners to help them better manage their blood sugars.
Lastly, cultural factors
also contribute to diabetes risks.
Hispanic cuisine contains large
amounts of carbohydrates, such
as white rice, fruits, jicama,
plantains, corn and flour tortillas, which cause large spikes
in blood sugar, contributing to
eventual insulin resistance.
Switching to brown rice and
whole grain tortillas could prevent spikes in blood sugar without
sacrificing
taste.
Eliminating refined sugars and
opting for fresh fruits and
unsweetened beverages also
helps manage blood sugar
spikes. Healthier cooking techniques such as steaming and
braising should be used whenever possible, instead of frying
or sautéing. Braising or a
“healthy sauté” with a flavorful
broth in place of oil can be a
delicious way of preparing fish,
lean meats, and vegetables.
Eliminating refined sugars and
opting for fresh fruits and
unsweetened beverages also
helps manage blood sugar
spikes.
Although the best
dietary choices may not be able
to prevent diabetes entirely, it
can help control blood sugar
levels and prevent damages to
the kidneys, nerves, and cardiovascular system.
I chose to discuss dia-

betes because my aunt was diagnosed with diabetes over 10
years ago. She was never overweight, and thus never watched
her diet or exercised. Like
many recent immigrants to the
United States, she worked long
hours and often took on the
worst shifts. She was introduced to department stores like
Costco and bought unhealthy
(but convenient), processed
foods in bulk. She used to stock
her kitchen with frozen corn
dogs, cheesecake bites, pop
tarts, and ice cream. Although
she now closely monitors her
diet and her blood sugars, she
will need to be on medication
for the remainder of her life.
Diabetes decreases one’s quality of life and carries tremendous
medical costs. It is the leading
cause of blindness and kidney
failure in adults. Over 60% of
all non-traumatic lower limb
amputations occur to people

Latinos are the largest
growing segment of the population in the United States.
Despite this, there exists a great
disparity when it comes to
healthcare (3). In addition to the
language barrier, access to competent healthcare, and lower
socioeconomic status, as compared to the overall population
in the U. S., there are cultural
differences that contribute to the
lack of competent care delivered (5). Among these differences are their beliefs regarding
disease, use of folk medicine,
and spiritual beliefs (4, 5).
Families also play an important
role in the delivery of healthcare
(1).
The delivery of culturally competent healthcare relies
on both the medical education
of its practitioners as well as the
acceptance of the Latino culture
relayed inaccurately. It may
also be beneficial if translators
are from the same culture, thus
improving their understanding
of the situation. Furthermore,
when a healthcare provider
speaks their language, patients
report having better experiences
(3).
Another important barrier to overcome is to understand their patient’s culture. It is
simply not enough to understand
their
language.
Practitioners must understand
what it means to be Latino. We
all share many of the same
health issues, but it’s how a culture treats and responds to them
that are different. For example,
some Latinos use a complementary approach to healthcare
through the use of non-mainstream methods of treatment
specific to their culture. Folk
medicine, along with conventional methods, is commonplace
with diabetes.
In 2012,
Americans as a whole spend a
total of $176 billion in medical
costs for diabetes treatment, and
another $69 billion is lost
through reduced productivity.
For the most part, adult onset
diabetes is preventable through
dietary and lifestyle changes. It
is a disease that could be drastically reduced by lifestyle and
dietary choices. For those of us
in the health professions, it is
crucial for us to find a way to
reach out to our higher risk
patients to better educate them
about nutrition and exercise.
Learning Spanish is a step
towards the right direction to
better care for our Latino
patients, many of whom may be
recent immigrants struggling
with acculturating to a new
environment, a new diet, and
work challenges.
by those trusted to care for
them.
However, it is not
enough to be trained as a medical provider. Care must be provided that is directed specifically with their culture in mind (2,
3). In addition, there needs to be
a greater presence of Latino
healthcare
providers
that
patients can connect with on a
cultural and familiar level.
Culturally sensitive
healthcare can be achieved if its
providers have training that
would allow them to provide
care in a manner that is specifically tailored to their patients.
The use of interpreters is an
excellent foundation to allow
for the exchange of information.
If a patient believes they will
not be truly understood, they
may not seek medical attention,
leading to potentially further
complications (2). Although
most Latinos speak English well
enough to operate in society,
more than half are reported to
speak solely Spanish at home.
Unfortunately, even with the
use of interpreters, the complex
medical language used often
leaves patients with questions
and concerns that go unanswered (4). One also needs to be
aware that, even with an interpreter, information can be
(1, 2, 5). Furthermore, unlike
many U.S. cultures, Latinos
involve their family members
more frequently in the decision
making process. This concept
is known as familismo.
Therefore, it is important to
include family members, when
appropriate and consented to by
the patient, in the healthcare
process (1, 4, 5). In addition,
concepts such as fatalismo, personalismo, respecto, and simpatia should be understood by
healthcare providers in order to
have a better understanding of
their patients and what they
believe is important (5). Unless
culturally competent care is provided, patient outcomes will be
poor due to perceived care
received and non-compliance
(2, 3).
Achieving
cultural
competence means that it needs
to be evaluated. It is not enough
just to attend seminars and orientation sessions. A system
needs to be in place that will
provide feedback concerning
the effectiveness of training.
The U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services Office of
Minority Health, as well as the
American Nurses Association,
has provided practitioners with

IN HOME PLANT CARE
PAGE 4 – NSCC PENNON
BY LYDIA WAHL
PENNON FACULTY
Countless plants have
died at my hands and I’m guessing your hands as well. We have
all spent $9.99 on a pretty plant
in a nice pot at the grocery store,
took it home and neglected it to
death. I am no plant whisperer,
and I have about as much qualification as someone who mows
their lawn. Okay, a little more
than that. I did take a couple of
classes at NSCC in Floral
Design. My first job was at a
florist and greenhouse and if
you count trail and error as
knowledge then I did gather
some general information about
how to help plants survive my
care.
Each plant should
come with seed packet instructions or a plastic information
card that is usually tucked into
the soil. This card has all the
information required for your
plant’s care. The card provides
right in upon your touch, you
may have overdone it. When the
water isn’t being absorbed it
will come straight out the bottom of the pot. Water should
pool on top and slowly sink into
the soil.
There are not as much
a variety of low light plants but
I find they do the best in a
house. They don’t typically
have an abundance of beautiful
flowers. Low light is a good
place to start especially if you
have trouble maintaining your
plants. You will typically find
fern, sedums, succulents, or
African Violets as indoor
plants. If a plant starts to have
leaves that feel and look crispy
then you’re giving your plant
too much light. Houseplants are
most likely going to get low
light. If you really get good at
this you can level up to plants
requiring medium light. These
plants will want to be placed by
the window. Full light needs to
information about how much
light, water, and space the plant
needs. Put plants with similar
drinking and light patterns
together to minimize confusion.
If your plants start to look suicidal, with wilted or crispy leaves,
then try adjusting their light and
water, and you will start to see
improvement. Crispy leaves are
typically due to either too much
light or not enough water.
Wilting leaves can happen when
a plant is getting too much
water and the roots are starting
to rot. Pay attention to the card,
plants are very particular about
their atmosphere.
You may have brought
your new plant home and
watered it so much that it
drowned. A tell tale sign of this
is a layer of mold growing over
the dirt. The mold is due to
overwatering and can be remedied by a blast from the sun to
dry it out. Sometimes it can be
too late for this and the leaves
and roots will also be easily
squashed in your hand. Try
immediately bringing your plant
outside and leave it there until
the soil starts to dry and give it
a small drink once the soil is
fully dry. If you tried to place
your plant in a nice sunny spot
and it started to droop this is due
to the plant not having water to
supply structure to its vascular
system. A good way to see if
you are over watering a plant is
to touch the soil, if the soil sinks
go right by the window, in a
window box or a garden with
direct light. Low light plants
outside are sensitive and require
some sort of shade like a water
barrels, buildings, grills, and
garden admirers. So chase people away from your garden
screaming, “you're stealing my
direct light.” They will leave.
Repotting a plant has
helped me in moldy situations.
When I’ve really wanted to save
a plant sometimes repotting it
has helped me but this isn’t the
best solution because you would
typically water a plant after
repotting it because it is shocking for the plant. Giving your
plant new soil will keep it from
stepping in water until it recovers. Some plants do better in a
garden where they can spread
their roots. Not having enough
room can be a great deterrent
from plant growth. When you
are replanting is a good time to
give it a drink because the plant
is settling into new soil.
Another good thing is to
scrunch the bottoms of potted
plant soil so that the roots aren’t
stuck in their normal position,
especially if you’re repotting it
from it’s plastic container. This
will promote growth. On your
plants card, the one that is your
best friend, it will tell you how
many inches deep your plant
needs to go into the soil and the
distance recommended for it to

was over; Ultimate Warrior was
the new World Wrestling
Federation heavyweight champion! One of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history
(which is saying something
since there has been over 300 of
them) was over and Warrior
came out on top. The torch had
been passed so to speak; the living superhero was on top of the
world. This is how the Warrior
should
be
remembered,
although it wasn’t always like
this. When the Ultimate Warrior
passed away on April 8th, 2014
the wrestling world lost a true
icon and legend. This is his
legacy.
Before he was the
Ultimate Warrior, he was Jim
Hellwig, a rookie wrestler in
Memphis looking for a break.
He was one half of the Blade
runners with Sting, future
World Championship Wrestling
heavyweight champion. After
finishing up in Memphis, he
traveled to World Class
Championship Wrestling in
Texas to become The Dingo
Warrior. This is where his final
look began to take shape: a chiseled physique with face paint,
arm tassels and a reckless
entrance by running to the ring.
Once he was finished there, it
was on to the WWF. He made
his initial debut on Wrestling
Challenge as the Dingo Warrior
but company owner Vince
McMahon thought the name
was stupid. A dingo is actually
an Australian dog and not really
relevant to American wrestling.
Vince then changed his name to
the Ultimate Warrior after noticing the Road Warriors in the
National Wrestling Alliance and
“Modern Day Warrior” Kerry
Von Erich in World Class. For
the remaining months of 1987
and early 1988, Warrior became
an instant hit with the fans with
his power moves and his look,
which was out of a comic book.
He began to pick up steam when
he was slated to face the mighty
Hercules at WrestleMania 4. It
was power vs. power and the
fans took notice that Warrior
could match power with anyone, including Herc. After dispatching Herc at WrestleMania,
he went on a long winning
streak deep into the summer. At
this point he was becoming
noted for running to the ring like
a madman, giving off the wall
interviews and his new, uptempo entrance music. When
the music hit, soon after Warrior
would sprint to the ring. At the
1988 Summer Slam event,
Intercontinental
champion
Honky Tonk Man laid out an
open challenge to anyone to
challenge him for the title. At
the time, Honky had been champion for over a year and to this
day was the longest reigning
champion in history. While
Honky waited in the ring, the
up-tempo music hit and out
sprang Warrior to a chorus of
cheers from the partisan
Madison Square Garden crowd.
Honky was caught off guard as
Warrior unloaded with right
hands and clotheslines until hitting his trademark big splash. A
three count later and Warrior
was the new champion in just 32
pun intended) biggest challenge
of Warrior’s career. Warrior
then proved he was no fluke
when he defeated the Giant and
eventually Heenan’s whole
crew at the 1989 Survivor
Series.
With the Heenan
Family now dispatched, Warrior
turned his attention to the 1990
Royal Rumble, the annual
January event held at the Arco
Arena in Orlando this year. In
this battle royal match, two men
start in the ring and every two

was fired. Just like that, there
went all the momentum he had

years. Vince eventually forgave
him but things would never be
the same.
By the middle of 1992,
the WWF had established a
stingy anti-steroid policy, which
rendered a lot of wrestlers in
trouble. Without their larger

When Warrior returned at

he looked smaller. Thanks to

Warrior was instantly thrust

far more than you need. While it
is possible to buy less product
and still technically be part of
Vemma, you aren’t going to
make much money doing so, as
you are ineligible for their Cycle
Commission program, from
which Vemma affiliates make
the majority of their money.
Once you complete your purchase, Vemma sends you a huge
case of the product of your
choice, and enrolls you in their
business. At this point, you are
able to begin making money,
which requires you to recruit
Vemma Customers, people who
buy Vemma products through
you and convince others to buy
it by word of mouth, and
Vemma Partners, people who
you convince to enroll in the
same program you are in. For
each person you recruit, you
gain a new customer bonus, the
size of which depends on how
much product your new recruit
bought. If you convince someone to buy the five hundred dollar starter kit, for example, you
would receive a one hundred
dollar bonus. After this, the
money made by you depends
solely on the money made by
those below you. Once the people you have recruited, and all
of the people subsequently
recruited by those people and
their underlings, have purchased
about six hundred dollars worth
of products, you receive a kickback of about twenty dollars.
The catch is that you have to
have that money evenly split
between the two sides of your
company, with two hundred on
one side, and four hundred on
the other. If one side is significantly larger than the other, you
will not make money off the
larger side until your grow the

there, your success is dependent
on how many people you are
able to recruit, how many are
recruited from those under you,
how many people are recruited
by them, and so on.
Once you are able to
fully wrap your head around
Vemma’s business model, its
flaws are quite apparent. First
off, the new customer bonus
system is quite deceptive, as it
artificially inflates your initial
earnings. For example, you may
recruit five people your first
month and make five hundred
dollars, but that level of profit is
only temporary, and will quickly decline as you run out of people to directly recruit. At that
point, you are dependent solely
upon the purchases of the people below you, a mere pittance
compared to your initial profits.
You initially think you are

ing you to continue on in your
venture, and you are able to
claim that your annual income is
far higher than it really is,
unwittingly deceiving others as
well. This is the tip of the iceberg as far as Vemma’s deceptive practices go, too. They
force you to buy several cases of
their product a month, simply so
that they have a way to keep
squeezing money out of you. It
is highly unlikely that you will
be able to use this entire product, even if you market very
aggressively. It’s simply unnecessary to buy fifty cans of their
stuff, as you could successfully
market the drink with a fraction
of that amount; you are not actually selling your inventory, but
convincing people to buy directly from Vemma itself. The product you buy is only useful for
giving out samples and personal
use. There are many other
deceptive practices Vemma
employs; they make it seems as
though the company is much
more profitable than it is, make
completely
unsubstantiated
claims regarding how healthy
their products are, and target
populations such as college
campuses, where there is often a
community of naive, younger
people that are inexperienced
enough to believe their exaggerations at face value. Thanks to
these practices, the majority of
Vemma associates don’t really
know what they are getting
themselves into.
Deception
is
not
Vemma’s greatest flaw, however; that distinction would go to
its unsustainable business
model. Lets assume, for the sake
of argument, that you are able to
recruit enough people to make a
decent profit based on those
below you alone. In this sce-
nario, it is easy to explain how
Vemma’s business model is
unsustainable and very similar
to that of a pyramid scheme.
Even if your business ends up
growing very quickly, it will
inevitably slow; the business
cannot grow indefinitely, as
there is a limited number of people, which you recruit. Once
you and the people below you
recruit all of the interested parties in the area where you operate, effectively saturating the
market, the growth stops. Once
growth stops, and the people at
the very bottom cannot turn a
profit, meaning that they can no
longer spend money, causing
you to begin losing money, a
trend that will continue up the
chain of associates you and the
people below you have recruited. You may think that you
would be able to continue making money off the chain of
Vemma customers you have
helped build, but that will do
you no good without your businessmen; both sides need to be
making money in order for you
to profit off of them. Vemma
associates will likely claim that
this is just theoretical, and the
potential for profit is limitless, if
only you work hard enough.
Statistics, however, do not lie,
and there are several statistics
that I can cite, all of which support my previous assertions
regarding
the
company.
According to statistics put out
by Vemma themselves, due to
the income disclosure policy,
ninety-seven percent of all
Vemma affiliates make less than
someone working at minimum
wage, ninety-two percent are
making less than half the minimum wage, and eighty-five percent are making less than one
fourth of minimum wage.

There are some plants
that need a little rest from time

many times I have been ready to
throw a plant away and found
the smallest sliver of green on it.
Perennials and bulb plants do
this. When they are in this stage,
water them as little as possible
if not at all. It is best for them to
be in a dark cool spot like a
garage. If you want the hibernation to end sooner then try
watering it about once a month.
If you start seeing more growth
you may be able to nurse it into
coming back sooner. There are
two types of potted plants annual and perennials. Annual need
to be replaced the next year;
perennials will come back for a
couple of years. Bulbs whether
If you bring a plant outside don't
be too eager to bring it back
inside, plants need to slowly
acclimate. So when you bring a
plant in from outside put it in
direct light to give it time to

When you are first
growing a plant. Say if you’re
starting from a seed, when it
gets to a 2-3 inch phase you
want to give it a short snip off
the top. This is how greenhouses split the stem to get a nice
full look. This is something
most places do when they have
chrysanthemums in the fall.
This can be done with most
plants and trees; your card
friend will tell you if it is not
recommended. Pruning when
plants are old is stricter. You
want to prune or “deadhead,”
anything that is starting to die or

house will also hibernate.
That juicy tomato
looks delicious. Deer, groundhogs, bugs, caterpillars, birds,
squirrels... all agree and you
have conveniently placed it
right outside of their home. If
deer are a continual problem for
you many suggest a fence but
this can be an expensive and not
always useful solution. A little
tip I picked up from my grandmother is that a battery radio in
a plastic bag will do the trick. I
recommend this solely for suburban areas. You will need to be
keeping that radio on at night so
that animals think there is someone in the garden. Your plants
are even unsafe when presumed
dead. Bulbs that have hunkered
down for the winter are really
appealing to squirrels and
ground hogs that hide their food
in the ground. Many people
recommend a hot spice as a
deterrent to animals but need to
do this continually because it
will soon wash away.
Plants get accustomed
to their environment, which is
why some plants grow well in
certain climates. This won't be
too much of an issue because
plants that will not do well in
your area probably won't be
sold at your local greenhouses.
wilt. The plant is still trying to
send water and nutrition to a
part of the plant that isn’t going
to come back.
It is important to give a
bouquet a fresh diagonal cut. A
diagonal cut provides more surface area for the flower to take
in water and supplements. Do
not make them too short
because giving them a refreshing chop later will make flower
arrangements last much longer.
After you have given a bouquet
a fresh cut, arrange your flowers. Remove all the leave below
the water level, to deter mold.
Pour out the water you arranged
them in, then before adding
more water add the powder that
comes with almost every bouquet. When florists get in a fresh
crop of flowers they add a concentrated amount of the same
powder into every bucket of
flowers.
Keep your plants
where you can see them. This
will make you more aware of
their condition. You will also be
able to enjoy more of their often
very short life span. If you follow the directions on the card
can be a discipline but it will
make the plant last much
longer. Remember that plants
provide oxygen and will refresh
any space in your home.

METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES REVIEW
BY CALVIN GIL
EDITOR IN CHIEF
“Metal Gear Solid V:
Ground Zeroes” is a stealthaction game, developed by
Kojima Productions, that was
released on March 18 2014. It is
the sequel to the highly praised
“Metal Gear Solid 4,” and continues the story of Metal Gear
Solid: Peace Walker. The
game’s story is quite compelling, the gameplay is polished and smooth, and the
graphics are visually pleasing,
making for a game that is quite
satisfying to play. It does have a
couple of problems, however,
namely a disappointingly short
main campaign, and a controversial voice actor change. All
in all though, Metal Gear Solid
V: Ground Zeroes will be an
enjoyable game for fans.
The story mode of
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground
Zeroes picks up where the last
released Metal Gear Solid
Game, Peace Walker, left off. If
you haven’t played that one yet,
though, don’t worry, as the
game has a brief synopsis of
Peace Walker’s story for those
who didn’t get a chance to play
it. Ground Zeroes follows Big
Boss, leader of the paramilitary
organization Militaires Sans
Frontieres, as he ventures into a
government internment camp in
Cuba, where two of his comrades, Chico and Paz, are being
held. Big Boss has to go in and
extract the two without drawing
much attention, due to the
‘politically sensitive’ nature of
the mission. After a beautifully
done introductory sequence, the
player takes control of Big
Boss, tasked with infiltrating the
camp and rescuing his comrades. Without giving away
what happens during the course
of the game, I will say that the
story is quite good, fraught with
suspense, mystery, and ending
in a shocking cliffhanger. The
main story is disappointingly
short, though; the average
gamer can easily complete it in
about two hours, if that. The
entirety of the gameplay is
restricted to the aforementioned
internment camp. Ground
Zeroes is thirty dollars if you
buy it on disk, and twenty if you
buy it online, and I feel that the
content delivered does not
match the price. It is very well
done, but it is, at its core, a glorified demo, and it is hard to justify charging twenty dollars for
it, much less thirty.
Ground Zeroes features beautifully rendered environments and character models,
thanks to the new FOX game
engine. Though the game looks
best on the next generation gaming systems, as one would
assume, it still looks great on the
older systems. The copy I
played was on the PS3, and the
graphics were still very impressive, if not quite as good as the
graphics featured in the next
generation copies of the game.
The voice acting is pretty well
done too, with most of the main
characters reprising their roles
from the previous games, and
doing jobs that range from serviceable to impressive. One big
change, however, is that David
Hayter, responsible for the distinctive growl that Big Boss and
Solid Snake had in the previous
games, is no longer voicing Big
Boss, replaced instead by 24's
Kiefer Sutherland. Though the
change is jarring at first,
Sutherland manages to give a
decent performance, one which
is much more restrained and less
scratchy than the performance
Hayter did; admittedly, this fits
into the darker, more realistic
tone of the game pretty well. His
performance is lackluster at
some points, but, as a whole, is
sufficient,
and
shouldn't
adversely affect players' experiences.
Although its length
leaves something to be desired,
Ground Zeroes' gameplay certainly does not. The Metal Gear
Solid series has always been
known for its innovative stealth
gameplay, and this latest installment improves upon its established formula even further.
First off, the movement is
smooth and fluid, incorporating
a new cover system that allows
the player to take cover behind a
surface when pressed up against
it, somewhat reminiscent of the
cover system employed by
Splinter Cell: Conviction. The
smoother controls make it so
that the game feels better to
play, and the new cover system
is a great addition, given the fact
that Metal Gear Solid IV lacked
one entirely. The hand-to-hand
combat is simple and satisfying,
allowing the player to beat
down, choke out, and interrogate enemies with the press of a
button, similar to the previous
games,
with
noticeably
improved animations. The gunplay is also markedly improved
from the previous installments,
with a more fluid aiming system
and weightier feel when a gun is
fired. Additionally, the internment camp is open-ended and
non-linear, allowing the players
to choose their own route
through it, or explore the camp.
The player even has the ability
to drive various vehicles around
the camp. This is a taste of the
open-world gameplay that
Metal Gear Solid V: the
Phantom Pain, the follow up to
Ground Zeroes, will feature. All
of these elements combine to
make a stealth-oriented game-
play experience that feels as
good as it looks.
All things considered,
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground
Zeroes is a very enjoyable
game. It features fluid gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a
great, well-presented story that
fans of the series and newcomers alike will enjoy immensely.
The length is problematic, however; even with its digital price
of twenty dollars, it feels very
short, especially considering
that it has been marketed as a
full game. On a similar note, the
voice actor change for Big Boss
has certainly upset many previous fans of the series, but ultimately doesn't affect the game
very much. Sutherland's performance is certainly serviceable, and most players won't even
pay attention to the change once
they get into the game.
Ultimately, Ground Zero is a
very enjoyable but insufficiently
long experience. Fans of the
series and stealth/action games

a unique perspective and ability to
reinvent himself over and over as
well as down to earth and raw intensity of his spirit. However, a much
better example would be Luther
Vandross becuase he was a sweetheart in many ways; I distinctly
remember the first time I heard his
voice I had a spirtiual ephinany and
his heavely voice and music gave
me the emotional and spiritual
strength to get through the middle

reason that I list David Bowie. In

the sun. With Savage back as
WWF champion, he would
defend the title at Wembley
Stadium in London, England at
the 1992 Summer Slam against
Warrior. In a much different
contest from the previous
WrestleMania 7 showdown,
they exchanged holds and
appeared to be on equal ground.
Interference from Mr. Perfect
and legendary “Nature Boy”
Ric Flair had Warrior win the
match, but not the title, by
count-out. Savage was supposed to team with Warrior
against Flair and newcomer
Razor Ramon at the 1992
Survivor Series but Warrior
failed a drug test shortly before
and was fired again.
Three and a half years would
pass before Warrior would be
seen again. In the meantime, he
would legally change his name
to Warrior and WCW would
establish a knock-off called The
Renegade. Warrior made his
return at WrestleMania 12 in a
victory over Triple H and the
nostalgia factor was there, but it
wasn’t to last. A comic book
featuring the Warrior would
come out and one of the most
peculiar images was Warrior
beating up Santa Claus, stripping him and putting him into
bondage. Yes, of course I’m
serious. After a mini-feud with
the bizarre Goldust and scheming Jerry “The King” Lawler,
Warrior began no-showing
events as summer approached.
One of the biggest no-nos in
wrestling was a no-showing
event and Vince fired him once
again, for good as it turned out.
He would have one final run in
WCW but for all the wrong reasons. In the fall of 1998, WCW
brought Warrior in to rekindle
To the Staff of The Pennon:
The article by Kevin
Hayes titled "Who the Heck
Are You? The Top 10 Most
Obscure Red Sox Batters of the
2000's" was a brilliant, original angle of writing and fun to
read. It helps show the number
of players that filter their way
through the Red Sox organization and through baseball that
get their glimpse of "The
Show" and then drift off into
the night. It reminded me of
when Dan Duquette was
General Manager One season
back in the 90's he had obscure
players suiting up and then
shipping out of town before
anyone learned to even pronounce their names. Thinking
back, he must of felt that there
were holes to plug and since he
was in charge, he'd better keep
doing it over and over again.
To his credit, he was working
with a tighter budget, and once
employed a guy who read
water meters to provide him
with reports on some pretty
good minor league players that
were being overlooked, but
his feud with the now heel (bad
guy) “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan
and to add spice to it, WCW felt
Warrior should be the second
coming of Batman by giving
him a spotlight with his logo on
it plus the ability to disappear at
will. It was a stupid idea
because why would WARRIOR
be challenging Hogan when it
was Warrior who had prevailed
the first time? This led to
arguably one of the worst
matches of all time between
Hogan and Warrior at 1998
Halloween
Havoc.
After
Hogan’s real life nephew
Horace interfered, Warrior was
defeated. Shortly after, Warrior
was gone, some thought never
to return. Up until 2014 Warrior
made news by becoming a controversial public speaker and
doing a harsh, 50 plus minute
interview calling Hogan every
name in the book. WWE (formerly WWF) poked fun at
Warrior by releasing a DVD
called The Self Destruction of
the Ultimate Warrior in 2005,
which was designed to mock
and ridicule him. It didn’t work.
All it did was drum up interest
in Warrior and it took ten years,
but Warrior got his day in the
sun. Warrior made his return to
wrestling to be inducted into the
WWE Hall of Fame the day
before WrestleMania 30. 3 days
later he had passed away, making peace before he left. Despite
the mocking DVD, the bizarre
comic book, the horrible match
with Hogan and his repeated firings, his legacy is safe. A few
hiccups doesn’t take away from
the incredible run he had in the
middle of one of the biggest
boom periods in American
wrestling. So with that said,
let’s let Howard Finkel take us
to the end. “Ladies and
Gentleman…THE ULLLLLLTIMATE….WARRIORRR!!!!”
*Cue up-tempo music*
had good numbers. Rich
Garces ("El Guapo") was one
of them (and he had a couple of
good seasons). Duquette also
traded Heathcliff Slocumb to
Seattle for Jason Varitek and
Derek Lowe, perhaps one of
the most one-sided trades in
baseball history. He got
Manny here, too. Alas,
Duquette's quickie solution to
keeping up with the Yankees
was to build a new stadium in
order to afford more players.
The Red Sox of today have a
numbers first approach and it's
worked out pretty well so far.
Making sure their are sold
players in the minors is sound
thinking, too.
This issue of The
Pennon was solid, and represents NSCC well. I'm a community college graduate, and
wrote for our campus publication. It's an honor for a staff to
do this kind of work, regardless of what it leads to. Keep it
up!

FINANCIAL AID CORNER:
THINK TWICE BEFORE BORROWING
A STUDENT LOAN
BY COURTNEY HATCH
BLAUVELT
STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES
Most students who
receive financial aid at North
Shore are offered a loan amount
as part of their total financial aid
package. It’s important to know
that you have a choice whether
or not to borrow the loan. There
are two big questions to ask
yourself before you click
“accept” for that loan. First, you
should determine how much
loan money you need for your
education. Second, think about
how long and hard it will be to
pay that money back.
One of the best uses of
federal student loan money is to
help pay for tuition, fees, and
books. Borrowing the minimum
amount necessary can be a
smart idea to help take the stress
off of paying for your educa-
schools in the state. A loan
could help cover basic living
expenses like rent, bills, and
food, but this prompts additional questions. How are you going
to pay for these basics when
you're no longer in school? If
you want to transfer to another
college, what will you do when
the tuition & fees go up and the
loans aren’t enough? What
about the fact that you don't
actually receive extra loan
money until the semester is
halfway
over?
almost
Borrowing student loans to
cover your everyday living
expenses while at NSCC may
not be your best option.
Two extra costs associated with loans are the interest
rate and the origination fee.
Interest is a percentage of a borrowed amount of money that is
calculated and charged to the
tion. Despite popular belief, the
loan amounts that are offered to
you by NSCC are not set in
stone and can be decreased any
time during the school year. If
you already accepted a loan on
Pipeline or have never been
offered a loan, you can complete a Loan Request form in the
Financial Aid office to customize the amount you want to
borrow.
Two more educational
expenses for students to consider are a computer and reliable
transportation. Do you know
how much your gas costs on a
monthly basis? Or a bus pass?
Will your car or computer need
repairs or replacement this
semester? Before borrowing as
much as possible to help cover
these expenses, it might be wise
to bring your car or computer
for a repair and get an estimate
on any improvements. Then
you’ll have a better idea of a
specific loan amount to borrow.
Other reasonable loan
spending may include childcare
while attending class, or on professional clothing to attend
internships or job interviews.
Beyond these expenses, it’s difficult to recommend borrowing
a student loan, particularly since
NSCC is one of the lowest cost
borrower on a regular basis, like
a recurring “convenience fee.”
Current federal student loan
interest rates are 3.86% for the
current academic year, and will
likely increase next year.
Federal student loan interest
rates are fixed, so any loan you
borrow this year will maintain a
3.86% interest rate. The current
origination fee is 1.072%,
which is taken out automatically. That is why the amount credited to your bill is less than the
amount of the loan that you
accepted.
There’s another important distinction to be aware of –
is your loan Subsidized,
Unsubsidized, or a little of
both? I try to remind borrowers
that the “un” in unsubsidized
equals negative, meaning the
loan terms are not as good with
an Unsubsidized loan as they
are with Subsidized. Subsidized
means that the government is
paying the interest on the loan
while you’re in school at least
half of the time (six credits), so
it’s like a temporary interestfree loan. Unsubsidized loans
start accruing interest immediately and the borrower is
responsible for paying it. It can
be paid off each semester (usually it’s between $10-30), or it
will build and capitalize, mean-
ing you pay more overall.
Students can’t choose whether
they get Subsidized or
Unsubsidized. The Subsidized
loan is a based on financial need
and is determined by the information provided on the FAFSA.
Another vital question
to ask when you're borrowing is
how much you'll have to repay
once you've graduated? Try to
factor in any future educational
borrowing you’ll do beyond
NSCC. Loan repayment begins
six months after you graduate or
stop attending any school at
least half of the time. The more
money you've borrowed, the
higher your loan payment. Here
are two examples using this
year’s interest rate, fee, and a
standard 10-year repayment
plan: If one student borrows
$5,000, the monthly payment
will be $65 for roughly 10
years. At that point the loan will
have cost $6,500 total. Another
student borrowing $30,000
should expect to make payments of $360 per month for
about ten years, which will total
about $37,000. The big lesson
here is whatever you borrow
now, you’ll pay back more
later!
Fortunately the federal
government is willing to work
with students struggling to
make loan payments or who
might qualify for special programs. But as the borrower, you
must take action yourself to use
these programs, no one is going
to do it for you. A helpful link is
http://studentaid.ed.gov/repayloans/understand/plans. Other
special loan forgiveness programs can be found at
http://studentaid.ed.gov/repayloans/forgiveness-cancellation.
Any modification you make to
pay off your loans usually
results in paying more money
overall and for a longer amount
of time than if you can stick to
the standard payment plan.
The best resource to
use once you start repaying your
loans is your loan service
agency. You should know
whom this is and how to get in
contact with them. They could
change if one servicing agency
closes and another one takes
over. So for a few years you
may pay one servicer, but suddenly it will switch to a different
company that you have to pay.
Yes it's frustrating, but it's within your power and responsibility
as the loan borrower to stay on
top of who the loan servicer is
and where to send payments.
The best place to find this information is by logging into the
National Student Loan Data
System at www.nslds.ed.gov.
You’ll be able to see a full history of all your federal student
loans types, amounts, servicers,
and schools. Knowledge is the
first step you can take towards a
debt-free future!

CREATIVE WRITING
SUPERCLOWN EPISODE 6: NO LONGER SOCIALIZING ALONE
BY PRITT YERAC
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
The rest of the day
went by in a flash and was
uneventful, as uncomfortable as
it was to randomly get seduced
by a hot married woman, he
hated to admit that he kind of
liked it. He was able to get his
mind of it for a little while as the
daily grind at work kept him on
an even keel, at this point 3-6
months in, he was well
entrneched at the job and used
to the type fo work he was
doing. He actually enjoyed the
quiet autonomy of the place, it
was comfy working in the background inside a big office building, buried in the back next to a
cubicle, when he was eventually
promoted, he aimed to get an
office near the back end of the
hallway. After awhile, the whisper sounds of papers, endlessly
typing away at the keyboard and
random phone ringing melded
together in the background and
he sometimes ended up being so
comfy and content that he
would sometimes fall asleep at
the keyboard for an hour and
then suddely be woken up by a
stray coworker and then just lied
and said he was really concentrating on the writing of the document he was reading.
Eventually as much as he
enjoyed his job, his joints where
getting stiff and feet where
killing him and when the sun
started setting in the sky and as
people started to pack up their
bags and go, he proceeded to
grab his suitcase and with his
other free hand grabbed the
stack of folders, documents and
various other papers neatly into
it and with a flick of his white
hands put his ancient white
gloves on and suit jacket on and
strutted out of his cubicle to
clock out.
On the way out he
shook hands and chatted it out
with a couple fellow employees
and saw his supervisor talking
to another employee and as he
turned to signal to him that he
would like to talk to him. Of
course he knew his boss was
going to ask him for help with
the desktop computer in his
office and he was tired and not
in the mood and walked sideways to the bathroom and then
resynched with the crowd of
suited people flocking off the
floor, back out into the world.
But he did have a second wind
socially, so he wasn't in the
utmost hurry to get home, fortunately as he rode the steel cage
elevator down with other
employees, he turned his head
and noticed that one of the
woman was reading a magazine
withh Joseph Gordan Lovett on
the cover and to his left he
noticed a guy watching a replay
of a football game that night on
his Ipad and realized he could
spark up a social opportunity
with these two random souls
and had to figure out how to go
about it. Finally he had an idea,
he started talking to the woman
in his left, then slowly was
going to incooprate it with a
couple other guys.
“So what do you think
of that Joseph guy?” The
woman dressed in a button
down shirt and formal skirt
takes a moment to look up,
gives his a quizzical expression
then realizes what he was talking about.
“Oh him, I don't read
much celebrity news or what
actors and showbiz are doing,
but when I see a movie of his, it
makes my heart leap with joy, as
a conersvative woman it's not
easy to admit that I guess you
could say he is a real hearthrob.”
“Oh, I see, you know
that guy next to us, has a game
playing and I could have
sweared he was in the background in the stands.”
“Really!” she says suddenly and excitedly.
“Well…” the guy getting wind of their conversation
as he continues staring at his
Ipad “I can't say for certain, the
cameras focus’ more on the
game than the stands, would
hate to be the one to let you
down.”
“So anyways, if it's
cool with you, would you like to
get a drink? Got some free time
before I get home to continue
working on a project.” The
woman calmly processed his
invitation and looks at him
directly in the eye.
“ I don't even think I
know your name first of all,”
She giggles good naturely.
“Nate Jefferson-Hook”
he says absent mindly and
extends his hand to shake hers.
“Nice to to meet you,
my name is Cynthia Angle.
You look familiar, have we run
into each other before around
the hallways or something?”
“You know, I’m sure
we have, perhaps you were one
of the notetakers at a meeting,
you work the floor below in the
record keeping department
right?”
“Exactly you are right
on the ball, yep, general manager actually. I know I don't look
like it with my christmas jacket
on and loolsely button shirt,
should of wore a suit jacket.”
“Nah, why would you
think you don't look professional, you are to me.” he said
sweetly. “Self confidence is one
of the attributes that separate the
good from the bad leaders, insecurity is the core of it if you ask
me.”
“You know, I never
thought about like that before.
How are you so creative and yet
working in such a monotous
job, shouldn't you be a CEO of
some forward thinking company
or unconventional artist ith his
own studio?”
“Well you see I work
as an Office Assitant and also a
Product Evaluator as you’ve
probably seen at the meetings,
It's a decent job that truth be
told” Trying to think of a reasonal story without giving away
his true reason that could blow
his cover. “I'm holding it down
till I hear back from two high
end firms.”
“Oh, I see” He wanted
to move slowly with her and to
prevent himself from coming on
too strong and fast, he was hoping to incooprate the guy to his
right involved, it didn't seem
likely, but he thought he would
give it a shot.
“Hey bud,” he quietly
signaled to get his attention,
“would you like to join us for a
drink? I see you all the time in
the next cubicle over from me.”
he said confidently with an
obvious air of reassurance.
“Oh yeah, I've seen
you around, always doing presentations once a week and
work with new and returning
clients.”
“Yes, I grew up in the
friendly Midwest, where everybody was a friend of a friend.”
Nate Adams Cook said casually.
“Man, arn't you a
social lantern around these
parts?” Cynthia chimed in flirtatiously.
“So where do I meet
you guys?” Superclown looks
down at the woman, to see what
she had in mind.
“You know there's a
great place down on Pickering
wharf in the city of Salem. I'm
sure It will come to me when we
get there.”
“Great I will meet you
two there.” He gets off a floor
early. By the time this conversation wraps up the elevator doors
open to the lobby floor and
everybody gets out. Cynthia
unravels her purse from her
shoulder and gives him a business card with her contact info
and he gives her his business
card.
“Clarence Thomas III,
Part time Meth Addict, Margo's
Soul Rehabilitation Clinic.
What's this and why is your picture on it?”
“Oops, sorry wrong
card, that's my example card I
use when I volunteer at clinics
around the country in the
Summer” and he flawlessly
switches card right out of her
hands.
“Wow, I didn't know
you were such a charitable man
in your spare time.”
“I'm glad you feel that
way.” Starting to feel nervous
and awkward ready to run the
hell out of there as well as to
“flush out the pipes,” before the
big game tonight. “So what time
should I meet you there?”
“Is 7PM good?”
“Great see you there.”
As soon as she started to walk
away in the opposite direction,
he runs like wildfire to his white
rainbow dotted cadillac, roars
the ignition to life and blasts
Teddy Pendergrass's “Close the
Door,” and after some time and
gets onto the highway, he blasts
“You’re My Greatest, Latest
Inspiration.” Singing out loud
with it here and there, he puts on
sunglasses and enoyes the last
of the sun before it fades over
the horizon and as he pulls into
his condo complex and he takes
a quite moment to reflect and
can't remember the last time he
was on a date.
He walks into his
apartment, throws his suitcase
on the couch, pours himself a
glass of wine, from an expensive bottle and extends out his
arm holding the freshly poured
glass to toast the occasion; his
mind and soul fluttering with
excitement and anticipation. He
strips out of his work clothes,
gets his couple thousand year
body into the shower, sweaty
and crusty from the long day at
work and begins getting himself
ready. As the water from the
showerhead splashes his cloud
white skin, he sings loudly and
proudly as he scrubs himself
clean, even aiming his voice
into the soap bar as if it was the
microphone and then as he is
reaching the climax of joy in his
shower routine, you hear the
loud pounding on the other side
of the shower wall and an a high
pitched angry black voice
interupts
“Keep it down, I'm trying to sleep here,” and he replies
quickly
“Sorry got lost in the
moment,” he drys off using a
thick furry towel that could double as wall insulation. He quickly shaves, trims his nose hairs,
cleanes his ears, finds a couple
fossilized specimens encased in
an amber like substance when
he pulls it out and within a quick
pointless activities later he puts
on a nice dress hat over a wonderfully charming white suit
jacket over a 80's muticolor but-
toned down shirt and leaves for
the night.
Despite all the grooming and stuff he had to do to get
ready, he arrived a nice fifteen
minutes early and he parks on
the curb next to Jaho coffe shop.
He can tell tonight the city is
bustling as it is Friday and
everybody is dying to let loose
after a long work week. Since
it's fall, you can halloween type
businesses sparking with some
activity, people in all the windows, the sound of shrill laughter and gasps from the crowd as
they stroll along the sidewalk.
He decides to get a hot chocolate with a shot of Irish Cream
and was surprised to see
Cynthia waiting for him as he
exited the shop.
“Oh, arn't you a speedy
Gonzolez, I'm used to woman
taking alot longer and showing
up late.”
“Well, I'm not like
other woman,” she stated as
matter of factly. They begin
walking and were slowly starting to connect when they forget
they had a third person joining
them. But they figured that
once they found a place they
would sit near the window and
wait for him. They walked by
Captians, but it was practically
empty and the hostess was playing with her blackberry, so they
decided to skip it. Then they
saw Victoria Station, which was
moderatly filled, but the food
smelled overly fried, burnt and
salty from a mile away and the
atmoshphere was really generic.
“Besides, I like trains
and there's no trains here, so disappointing.”
“Exactly,”
Nate
Jefferson answered absent
mindly. Then they peaked
around a corner and saw 62 on
the Wharf, saw two guys
wrestling out the door, in a heated brawl, while the other diners
continued to eat like oblivious
ghosts. Eventually the two
brawlers dreesed in kitchen outfits started running out of steam
and started to to just slap each
other hard on the ass.
“More like like 69 on
the wharf,” Cynthia laughed
darkly.
“Arn't you a fresh
young lady.” Nate Adams giggled and so they finally decided
to walk into this restaurant right
before it, called Finz.
“Do you have the guys
number?”
“Yeah, I have Jacob's
number. Get us a table, while I
call him and I will be right in.”

SUPERCLOWN EPISODE 7 PLOT DETOUR: THE PLOT THICKENS
BY PRITT YERAC
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
Dear reader, I know if you have
been following the series regularly you were probably expecting to see the story continue off
were we were left off as he was
entering the glorious seafood
restaurant of Finz, but unfortunately like in life, sometimes
there are detours that happen
and can’t be avoided, though
inconvenient for those who want
to see it continue chronologically you will have to either push
through this next couple chapters or if you’re the lazy instant
gratification type, feel free to
jump ahead to chapter 10, but
just remember in real life there
is no shortcuts and be prepared
to be unprepared for discussion
with your peers who have done
the homework as you will be
guaranteed to be missing out.
The weekend was
finally here and he was ready to
take a private vacation for a
couple days and he just finished
emailing in a copy of his project
to his boss at the office and just
completed a weekly report for
the police station on current
clues and small chinks of current breakthroughs he made so
far in his investigation. The
high noon has slowly began to
settle into early evening as the
obvious sunburned hi neck had
received over the long exposure
through the office windows sitting behind his desk at work,
overtime slowly started to
become a tan that was slightly
noticeable through his albino
skin. The typical office background soundtrack was flowing
in the background, a low muffled unrecognizable smothering
of voices melded together
spouting now and then between
the constant ringing of phones,
the fluttering of various papers
being moved on the desk, the
dry air masked by the bright
almost transparent lighting surrounding the many floors this
company owned in the office
building. He quickly picked up
his cubicle phone to doublecheck with the chief he received
his report and glossed over a
few things in their minor regular
weekly conversations. He double-checked to have his cell
phone number up to date and
mentioned if he must be reached
its best to contact his Gmail
account and mentioned this
weekend was not good to have
immediate contact and so if they
need anything to contact his personal secretary and house
watcher Calvin, since Chris was
on extended vacation and didn’t
say when he was coming back.
He was a minor mannered chill
dude, with who wear t-shirts, a
black leather jacket though it’s
the middle of winter, a wonderful down to earth voice that
belongs to a SUPPORTING
CHARACTER IN A MOVIE.
But more on him later. Ache
chief didn’t sound amused and
so he quickly inched the conversation purposely in a rush as he
knew the police chief had more

He called long distance, saying:

questions. He didn’t feel like
answering after long boring day
laboring in the office, so he
quickly told him he had to go as
his boss was walking around the
corner and that he will be back
Monday bright and early. His
cover was he was screening possible doctor up there world
famous for lower back pain

He then packed up his
business briefcase that had the
logo of the old NeXt computer
line and ran for the door as he
heard the call of his manager or
boss and then pretending not to
hear him, picked up his speed
and started to do a fast jog and
as the voice started to get closer
he feigned a conversation next
to him and began to jog faster
and the other person began to
pick up speed with Superclown,
as the boss was about a few feet
from him. Without him realizing it, two guys carrying a huge
piece of furniture crossed
between the boss behind him
and them as he leaped into the
elevator and fell flat on his face,
when he got up his big round
red nose cushioned his fall and
sent him flying back up as the
elevator doors closed behind
him. With his big red hairdo,
cushioned the back of his head
and started to fling forward
again; but was able to balance
himself back into place with his
amazing ancient core muscles
and there was a woman sticking
her arms out prepared to catch

on the lobby he went to grab a
cappuccino at the café down
there and as he was sitting at a
booth, munching on a cake pop,
sipping a peppermint mocha
with whipped cream, reading
the most recent news, he saw
this gorgeous tall blonde woman
who must have been a model
like Noami Watts or Naomi
Campbell but skin made of the
clearest clouds at sky high altitude, she was walking close to
him and he motioned to her
swaying his arms around in a
circular direction as someone
who was trying to direct a landing plane at night when she
automatically sat down at the
adjacent seat in the booth. The
others were empty and was
relieved she didn’t bluntly deny
him and pretend to ignore him,
in fact she had an amused look
on her face, surprised to see
such chivalry and kindness from
a complete stranger and she
slowly studied him and sat put
her book bag down next to him.
He politely introduced himself
and reached across the table to
extend his handshake.
“If I may, what’s your name, my
name is Shane Dawson” he said
nonchalantly.
“Nice to meet you my
name is Miranda Cunningham.”
“What a lovely name I
thought people like you only
appear on magazine.”
“Why do you signal
me to sit down next to you?” I
wanted to look busy and prevent
any co-workers from sitting
down with me, I ran away from
my boss today. I know the news
isn’t good and want to skip
down and do business for another day.
They proceed to have
an elegant discussion, professionally introduce themselves to
each other and for a nice half
hour, they have a couple of
espressos and share a slice of
cheesecake as he told her all
about his job and she told him
about her job as a graphic
designer for an amazing corporation. To him it was a nice little slice of heaven in an
extremely boring hellish day.
He gets up abruptly, the cake
pop he has is slightly undercooked and as he ran into the
restroom to remove the unpleasantness from his system you
hear the sound of a crude running water splashing the bowl,
followed by an orchestra of
goofy and nonsensical noises
followed by the sounds of a random sound lip of a newsreporter talking and the gasping
voice of a guy praying he isn’t
in a state of dying, praying that
this ordeal doesn’t last twenty
minutes. As he finishes up and
begins pulling his pants to leave
the stall, he hears the voice of a
black man entering waving his
arm, pinching his nose, “man
somebody stank!” and he waits
for the guy to enter a stall and he
then quickly walks out to wash
his hands, as he is washing
them, the black gentleman
walks over to wash his hands in
the sink right next to him and
then says to him with a straight
face and points to a guy in
another stall who was already in
there when he came in and the
guy nods agreeably and as he
leaves someone walks into his
former stall and then realizes he
forgot to flush and that guy
exclaims
“What the hell, what is
this world coming to! Who
clogged it and this is the only
open one?” and as he is finishing that sentence he slams the
door behind him and ran like a
bat out of hell to a stair case.
Before he knows it, forgetting
how slippery his air Jordan
grapes were, he starts sliding
down the steps and to break his
fall he starts rolling down the
staircase. As he is rolling people
jump out of the way to escape
being slammed into as he goes
flying down the staircase and
keeps picking up speed like the
blurry exercise wheel in a hamster cage and next thing he
knows he lands hard on the first
floor carpet and untightens his
limbs as a couple bewildered
bystanders just watch this guy
slowly get right back up and
walk out the door, completely
shocked none of his limbs were
broken. Except his crotch and
back area wee woefully bruised
that he walked uncomfortably
for the next few hours like a
rough night at yoga class after
being used as a punching bag
for karate. It was no walk of
shame but rather a walk of pain
followed by the best night of his
life. He arrived at the parking
garage to find a note from his
boss stating to come meet with
him as soon as possible.
He looked around and
noticed that his boss’s car was
already gone and so he turned
the ignition and floored it out of
there and barely missed tailgating a couple cars on the way out
of the entrance. He could care
less as in his heart he knew it
was a temporary job and hated
working there as well as the
coworkers he shared space with.
As he turned a couple corners
and checked to make sure he
had his papers ready for renting
a cabin on a lakeside in Maine,
he then realized he forgot to
feed his pets and forgot to grab
a key.
He pulled into his
apartment complex and noticed
his former wife’s attorney
parked out front, so he went out
back and after finding a secluded spot to park his car, began
climbing the loose ladder which
connected to the rest of the fire
escape steps to his window
entrance. He was hoping to
evade him to deal paying with
his left over legal fees later, but
unfortunately to his surprise he
found the lawyer standing there
quietly waiting for him as he
was about to go in!

materials to become culturally
competent. However, the system cannot be one sided. It
must reflect perspectives from
both patients and healthcare
providers alike. There have
been numerous studies done
from the provider’s perspective,
but it is the patient that should
have the final decision whether
or not care has been delivered in
a culturally competent and sen-
sitive manner because they are
the ones directly affected (2, 4).
Unfortunately, there have only
recently been tools developed to
gauge cultural competence from
the perspective of, in my opinion, the most important participant, the patient. To that end,
The Consumer Assessment of

competence from the perspective of patients.

Culturally competent
healthcare should be a standard
practice, not considered only
after other attempts at interaction have failed.
Patients
deserve care that reflects their
culture and beliefs. Healthcare
providers must continually find
ways to interact with patients on
a more personal level; they must
enlighten themselves and
embrace other cultures. The
lack of cultural competence
only serves to erect barriers
between patient and provider.
Only when barriers to healthcare are overcome, will we, as a
society, be able to serve its
diverse population effectively
and compassionately.

THE BOOK OF MORMON
PAGE 18 – NSCC PENNON
Last Thursday I went
with my friend and his parents
who bought tickets to go see
“The Book of Mormon.” The
location of the critically and
wildly popular production was
at the Boston Opera House in
Boston, MA.
We had seats
high up inside the theater and
over to right. While we still had
a nice overcast view of the
stage, it was lightly obscured so
we had to turn our heads a little
to see or grasp certain details.
We waited awhile for the play to
start and the show took a few
minutes longer than usual to
begin. The show finally started
as the room grew dark and the
lighting on the play began.
Here is some background information for those
not familiar with the authors
behind the play. Matt Stone and
Trey Parker, graduates of
University of Colorado are most
famous for creating the hit
series on Comedy Central called
“South Park.” They originally
met at the University of
Colorado, majoring in film.
While there, with Trey leading
the way Matt helped him produce his first project, the low
budget historic loose biography
slasher musical film “Cannibal”
the musical commonly known
as Alfred Packer the musical.
This film marked the beginning
of their unique style of voice
acting and reoccurring gags as
well as inside jokes. After that
their first attempt at a show was
pooned the daily office job of
whatever presidential administration assumed the post after
the 2000 election. Fun fact: at
the time they thought Al Gore
was going to win but after the
long recount and controversial
Supreme Court decision they
had to rewrite the show for the
incoming Bush administration.
Before the release of the “Book
of Mormon,” their last attempt
to do an independent feature
was Team America World
Police. So Part of the big hype
of The Book of Mormon was
the fact this is their first original
project in eight years.
The story of the play is
that there is this fellowship of
Mormons who as part of their
rite of passage, they are sent
away from home and to various
foreign countries; to do baptisms and convert new followers
to their religion. After a specific
period of time their president
and leader of their branch comes
to visit and see how they are
doing, where they will be
assessed and if they don’t do
well they are likely going to be
excommunicated. The play
focuses in particular on two for
them who are sent to Uganda as
missionaries to fulfill a mission.
One of them is tall, skinny with
a serious temperament; the
other is short, fat and woefully
incompetent as well as very
immature and childlike. They
are a horrible fit for each other
and it turns out that the short
one hasn’t read the holy book
and due to their rigid Boy Scout
the historical comedy show
Timewarped, which was never
picked up. Then they did a documentary for the Universal
Studio tour called “Your Studio
and You,” which featured other
big celebrities. Then around the
time “South Park” premiered
they made other films at the
same time during its first three
seasons,
like
Orgazmo,
BASEketball and of course
“South Park: Bigger, Longer
and Uncut” (the movie based on
the show). Around the turn of
the millennium they started to
slow down and do less, besides
another stab at a TV series that
was short lasting “That’s My
Bush,” which focused and lam-
rules they can’t leave each other
and must go everywhere together and be back by sundown. Of
course the beginning of the play
gives a comical brief historical
overview and summary on the
background story of the inception as well as creation of the
Mormon religion. As you watch
the play it is a very clear where
they added the comedy and the
tone of the play is very satirical.
However there is a bunch of
crude jokes as well as stereotypical portrayals of different ethnic groups and regions of the
world. Case and point: though
the main Mormon characters
and their families are portrayed
as very naïve and uneducated
BY TRIPP CAREY
STAFF WRITER
towards certain parts of the
world, one of the musical numbers involves their family saying goodbye by having a
women dressed up in African
tribal gear making a bunch of
noises in vein of The Lion King.
Including the fact that once they
arrive in their village the native
villagers break into song but the
song itself was eerily similar to
the a classic Disney song, like
“The Little Mermaid,” “Under
The Sea.” But what bugged me
as a viewer and I get that they
had to set up a relatable concept
for the actors of the play to follow as well as for the audience,
but I was annoyed that they built
the whole infrastructure of the
play off a very simple stereotype of Africans and none of the
backgrounds in Africa were that
advanced, it was all agricultural
or coastal backgrounds. It’s like
to most people, Africa today is
still a primitive wasteland that
isn’t as technologically modern
like the rest of the world, which
isn’t true. I get some parts of
Africa are poor and disadvantaged like many places but really, not even a paved street or
urban building in the background to hint of higher standings of living that actually exist
on the continent? It would be
like if in Chad they were doing
a play about North America in
one of their stage plays, that had
a guy dressed up a pair of
shorts, a tank top, holding a cigarette sitting on a sofa watching
TV doing nothing or dressed in
pilgrim catching fish with a net
on a wooden boat and implying
everyone in America lives like
that.
The rest of the play
continued on with many fun
musical numbers, interesting
characters like General B.F.
Naked that served at the conflict
in the plot that is preventing
them for converting the natives
over. I did get a few laughs with
the stationed group of Mormons
the two main meet when the join
the already established group in
Uganda, led by an unofficial
leader who is a closeted homosexual and they make fun of
themes of curing and repressing
homosexuality in song “put it in
its own box and crush it till it’s
gone.” The rest of the play
throws little hints at him like
him running and dancing away
in tap dancing shoes or later in
the play when their mission
backfires we see him with a
packed pretty decorated travel
suitcase.
I won’t give away the
ending of the play, but let’s say
it was an interesting one. It was
good and entertaining, a little
repetitive, if you have seen
some of Matt Stone and Trey
Parker’s other works then you
will know what to expect when
you go see this. In terms of
directing a Broadway play, this
one was good, it communicated
and dealt with its themes well
and had a very engaging story
that kept you hooked.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CORNER:IPHONES TO
MAKE WASTE
BY JESSIE NOCELLA
ENVIRONMENTAL WRITER
Whether we drop our
phones in the toilet, have an
overdue upgrade or want the latest and greatest of the new
smartphones, Americans are
replacing their cells about every
22 months. These advanced little computers are filled with
lead, cadmium and mercury
toxins that can cause serious
medical problems if exposed to
humans. If they can be so harmful then why does America keep
it legal to transport toxins in and
out of the country? Why do we
pile up our old phones in the
neighborhoods of third world
countries?
Most people have no
clue what happens to their
phones after they replace them
or toss them into the barrel
without a second thought. The
sad truth is that we legally pollute already impoverished
places like Ghana, India, China
and Delhi just to get rid of our
own waste. Piles of old socket
boards, wires, metal chips and
different assorted electronic
pieces are spread throughout
these countries, creating not
only a hazardous situation for
the environment but for peoples
health. These materials are
taken apart and traded to recycling merchants for maybe a
few dollars at most. That small
amount of money can not be
worth the health risks and labor
that they spend just trying to get
the recyclables from the old
phones.
Not only are we sending these toxins to other countries but The Federal Bureau of
Prisons has kept inmates busy
with processing the large
amounts of ewaste that has collected. We are putting our own
citizens and lowerclass people
from other countries’ health in
danger just to inefficiently
“recycle” these byproducts. We
have unfortunately been supporters of our own pollution in
this country and many others on
our
environmentallyfragile
planet. If we don’t find better
ways to dispose of these chemicals they will continuously contaminate our Earth. As of now
five percent of worldwide
municipal solid waste is electronic waste and is growing
with every cell phone that is disposed of daily in the United
States.
What is the most surprising and disappointing part
of this whole topic is the fact
that in 2011 The Responsible
Electronics Recycling Act
(RERA) was proposed to
Congress that would have
stopped the export of toxic
waste to other countries. This
bill got bipartisan support but
was never put to a vote. It’s suspicious how this is such a big
problem in our country but is
not important enough to put on
the table to discuss between
political parties. The Act should
have been considered more by
our government so we could
become more environmentally
conscious as a planet. The lack
of effort to make this bill a priority is inexcusable and brings
light to the ignorance of the pollution we are rapidly adding on
to.
With the quantity of
electronic waste the United
States is producing, it poses the
question; how long will it take
before this material causes citizens to become ill or until we
cover whole cities with litter? In
2011, the same year the RERA
was proposed and looked over,
we generated over 3.4 million
tons of ewaste. Out of that massive number, only about 25%
was recycled. What’s wrong
with this picture? Only 25% of
our electronic trash was reused
while 75% added to the pollution of the environment. The
advancement in technology is
only getting greater which
means the amount of old products being thrown away will
also increase. If we don’t find
an alternative to ewaste we will
be selfishly adding to the
extreme amount of manmade
problems we already strain our
environment with. So instead of
updating to that new phone
every few months just find a
good one, take care of it and
keep it for a few years...who
knows maybe we can all save
the world, even if it’s just a little.

VISITING AUTHOR:
JOEANN HART
BY LYDIA WAHL
PENNON FACULTY
As part of the Arts in
April event at North Shore, the
college invited author in residence JoeAnn Hart to do a reading at the Lynn and Danvers
campuses. JoeAnn Hart lives in
the area as a resident of
Gloucester, MA. Before her
reading, she spent some time
acknowledging the successes of
the artist, Karen Ristuben who
had been the photographer for
the “Float” book cover. Hart
commented that Karen had
managed to get a picture of
under the windshield that had
washed up in Gloucester
Harbor. Recently Karen had
environmental art up at the
Museum
of
Science.
http://www.karenristuben.com/
An excerpt of “Float”
is available on JoeAnn Hart’s
website. I immediately appreciated the detail behind the characters thoughts and enjoyed the
description of our area. I was
struck by her definition of sea-
glass as “that perfect collaboration between man and nature,
was becoming a relic of the
past.” but also identifying it as a
local issue and showing her
appreciation for natural life. In
this excerpt she also shows her
talent for interpreting the social
life of characters through lessons in nature. Hart also showed
her talent for analyzing the life
of characters when she talked
about how “humans were so
cruel they knew how to play on
natural greed.” I was pulled in
by her diction and representa-
tion of the world around us and
its effect on nature and humanity which as well as food are
some of the major themes of her
writing. Hart uses dialogue and
detail to talk about the environment with her readers. Without
research to provide detail, it is
easier for readers to say the
event never happen. When Hart
writes she believes that you
“can’t have a message, only
have beliefs,” and that the belief
needs to come through the characters. Research will help make
the story “more real than the
real world.”
After the reading, she
was asked when and why she
had begun to write. JoeAnn said
it took going to college to have
someone tell her what she was
good at. While Hart was there
she was told by one of her writing teachers that she was
already using a lot of the styles
of a fiction writer like back
story, setting, and symbolism.
Anxious to learn more about the
world, Hart left college during
her freshman year. She spent
her time traveling before getting
married and moving to
Gloucester, MA. Hart went
back to college at the Harvard
Extension School to be an
example to her children.
For people learning
how to write, JoeAnn recommended Anne Lamott’s “Bird
by Bird: Some Instructions On
Writing and Life.” Some of her
favorite authors are from the ‘50
and ‘60 and include John
Updike, Alice Monroe, Peter
Taylor and Antonio Nelson.
Hart has a lot of wonderful
advice for prospective writers.
One of the first things she talked
about with getting started was to
not start off with self publishing. She advised that before
submitting books, to submit
poetry and stories to literary
magazines to prove you are
going to stick with this and to
start building a portfolio. Hart
says you must love the process
because it is not easy; practice,
rewrite, and put everything
down. Don’t ever write based
on live people because they
don’t translate well onto the
page. The brain is where the art
is coming from and there is lots
of ways to trick it. Rewrite a
favorite story with a different
subject. Write your favorite
authors words to get you going.
Hart also talked about a term
called “killing your darlings,”
saying that sometimes things
have to go to keep the readers
attention. She recommended
putting away pieces you like for
other things and to keep a document of notes (character traits,
behaviors, amorphous characters till you work with them) to
refer back to during writers
block. JoeAnn also suggested
not to have too much info, and
to try to keep a clean narrative.
Hart writes everyday,
in the morning, right out of bed,
to maintain dreaminess while
transitioning to creativity. She
recommends disciplining yourself with a time to write, always
have something you are working on its just part of the writers
life, just sit there and write anything to get yourself going. She
said to keep listening and reading until you find things you
like and that it was important to
find your place to see who your
audience was. When Hart was
talking about reading she said
“It takes feet in the brain to go
from these words to images,”
and commented that when you
are in a good book and starting
to imagine, you become no
longer consciously aware that
you
are
reading.

It can be a constant

many comics based on characters in books, movies, video
