MY PLUS ONE YOUR POCKET LOCAL’S GUIDE TO North London COOL PLACES DRINKS The Phoenix cinema COFFEE FOOD NIGHTLIFE Kipferl House of Wolf CINEMA AUSTRIAN COFFEEHOUSE BAR 52 HIGH RD, N2 9PJ 20 CAMDEN PASSAGE, N1 8ED 181 UPPER ST, N1 1RQ Phoenix Cinema is one of the UK’s oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. Having relocated from a tiny site in Barbican to a large and bright space in Angel, Kipferl now has plenty of room to accommodate its many admirers. They come for Austrian and Central European classics, and the notably stylish café serves them with aplomb. Located on Islington’s Upper Street, sits the House of Wolf, a three-story, Victorian lair for pleasure seeking gastronomes. With an ethos of collaboration and creativity, dining, drinking, art and live entertainment is uniquely presented for the first time anywhere under one roof. The Phoenix is the oldest cinema in Britain, with red velvet seats, original ticket stubs, tea and cake. Great for hand baked Austrian cakes. Make sure to check out the Apothecary Bar on the second floor serving experimental drinks. Regular DJ indie night on a Wednesday. Light fresh dishes with fantastic flavours are what’s on offer. There is only one chef, and he cooks within sight of the diners. The restaurant is not much to look at from the outside but the food inside is wonderful, as is the service. We’ll be dishing up meaty ribs and rib tips, homemade BBQ sauce, juicy burgers, whole smoked chickens, and pulled pork that’s been cooked low and slow (for over 16 hours) in the smokers we imported from Oklahoma. This pub is not to be missed! This place is unpretentious, cheap and their lok luk steak is amazing! This newly-opened joint serves up a Memphis-style BBQ. MARKET PLACE, W1W 8AH A fabulous chic diner serving only hotdogs and champagne in the heart of Fitzrovia. The unique menu has a quirky offering of 13 various styles of hotdogs. The champagne listing is great with a good selection available by the glass including Pink champagne. Polpo is a bàcaro. This is a Venetian word to describe a humble restaurant serving simple food and good, young local wines. The club’s combination of tight quarters, low ceilings, and a merciless DJ pumping out soul, R&B, and reggae at high volumes means there’s not much to do but dance – and that’s just what the diverse and energetic swarms of rappers, girly-girls, and metrosexuals do. There’s a great selection of champagne and hot dogs on offer. A winning combination! Italian tapas and lovely buzzy atmosphere. You can’t reserve a table here so be prepared to queue. The night to go is A Musica em Mim which is held on the second Saturday of every month. Perfect and good traditional Persian food. Very affordable price. The bread is in a large size, ideal for the appetizers. The lamb served with rice is very good. Our first floor contemporary dining room offers delicious, finely executed dishes in a relaxed yet stylish environment. The two brothers that own and operate the restaurant draw the majority of their ingredients from their family farm in Sussex. Having this kind of involvement with everything from the field to the plate leaves little room for everything here to be anything other than delicious. Ask the cooks to show you their old stone oven - it’s one of a kind! Go for a treat and have a latte with the grilled Devon Rose smoked streaky bacon - it’s the best. This place is perfect for a fun group meal. Try out the ‘mouthfuls’ and sharing plates - v tasty!
