Brandon Ivie: My first show ever was as an understudy in a Village Originals production that Brian Yorkey directed called Searching 4 Y about teens in an inner city high school math class. That was the first time I worked on a new musical and I was immediately hooked. VT: Now you are in the director’s chair. What has the journey been like? BI: I was the kid who would show up to every rehearsal even if I wasn't called, and think about how I would do everything. Seems I was meant to be a director! I was also a very driven youngster so I sought out a lot of opportunities, and where I didn't see any I would make them for myself, which got me a lot of experience at a young age. I've been directing in some way since I was 16 so it's been a long time coming. VT: Why Pump Boys and Dinettes? What attracted you to this show? BI: Lately I've really gotten into different ways for musicals to be created and to exist on stage. Pump Boys and Dinettes was actually pretty out-of-the-box when it premiered, and essentially featured a preexisting band as its cast, which I think is so ahead of its time. Before Once and Lizard Boy, there was Pump Boys and Dinettes. VT: With so many musicians in your cast, what was the rehearsal process like? BI: It has been one of the most organic rehearsal rooms I've been in. I'm all about collaboration, so having a room full of really smart actors who are also musicians on a show that's pretty open to interpretation has been thrilling. It's more like a garage band rehearsal than a traditional musical theatre rehearsal. VT: What do you hope audiences get out of this show? BI: A good time! 6 VILLAGE THEATRE Musical Numbers ACT I Highway 57 (J. In Issaquah (425) 392-1942 x100 In Everett (425) 257-6368 YOUNG CHILDREN Children under four are not permitted in the main theatre space in Issaquah or Everett. In Issaquah, the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre has comfortable, sound-proof family rooms for families with young children or those who may wish to speak during the show. Subscribers may exchange into the family rooms when a sitter cannot be found. When bringing children over four into the main theatre, please instruct them in proper theatre behavior. It is helpful to familiarize them with the story and the score in advance. ACCESSIBILITY Wheelchair seating is available. Please advise your ticket seller when purchasing tickets if you require wheelchair seating. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is provided during select performances at the Francis J. Gaudette theatre. Please contact the Box Office for more details. LISTENING SYSTEM The Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in Issaquah is equipped with a listening system for the hard of hearing, and the Everett Performing Arts Center has a hearing loop system which is compatible with most hearing aids. Headsets are available in both venues on a firstcome first-served basis from the House Manager and are free of charge with a valid ID. THE SHOW MUST GO ON Whether it rains, sleets, snows or blows, only a power outage or building destruction will prevent a performance from taking place as scheduled. PATRON CONSIDERATIONS Please arrive on time. Check your tickets for your performance time. Late arrivals are very disruptive to fellow patrons and to the artists onstage. Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the Theatre. Patrons arriving late will not be seated until a suitable pause in the performance at the House Manager’s discretion. Please turn off all pagers, cellular phones and watch alarms before entering the Theatre. No text messaging is allowed during the performance. No photography, video or sound recording of any performance is allowed based on royalty and union agreements. Be aware that talking, humming and tapping feet during a performance is also disruptive to the patrons around you. Before the overture begins, please turn off playbill flashlights and unwrap cough drops. In intimate auditoriums like the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre and the Everett Performing Arts Center, even the actors can hear these seemingly small noises. Please use moderation in applying perfume, cologne or lotion, as many people are allergic to scents. In consideration of your fellow patrons and the actors, please do not leave the performance during the curtain call. encoreartsseattle.com 7 Who’s Who Cast JOSHUA CARTER* (Jim). To learn more about subscribing to the Beta Series, visit us online or contact the Box Office at (425) 392-2202. L to R: Nicholson, Sasser, Burwell Village Theatre: Welcome! Tell us about the show. Kent Nicholson (Director): Cubamor is about two Americans who travel to Cuba and meet two Cubans, and end up in a sort of A Midsummer Night’s Dream world of the Orisha tradition and Cuban culture as they fall in love and struggle to find ways of reconciling their cultures. James D. Sasser (Book and Lyrics): The piece is inspired by a film by Joshua Bee Alafia, who went to Cuba and shot it pretty much illegally, kind of guerrilla-style. We were inspired by the collision of these two cultures and the idea that love always finds a way – through political strife, through stereotype, it kind of blows it all up, so that was what really inspired us to want to musicalize this story. Charles Vincent Burwell (Music and Lyrics): And the cultural landscape of Cuba is so rich. There’s the Cuba that we see on television, and that we see on the news, and then there’s the Cuba that’s actually there. There’s a lot of power in perception. Unlike most Broadway hits, Pump Boys and Dinettes didn’t begin with the intention of it becoming a musical, or even landing on the stage. Instead, it began simply, with two musicians performing gigs at the lounge inside The Cattleman restaurant, west of Grand Central, in order to pay their rent. The Cattleman was a New York City steakhouse known as one of the first theme restaurants, calling itself an “adult Western restaurant,” where waitresses wore classic saloon girl attire and country music set the mood. As such, Jim Wann, a songwriter/guitarist, and Mark Hardwick, a piano player/actor, were hired to entertain the business crowds with country standards. On slower nights, the duo would play original songs written by Wann for the comic persona that Hardwick was developing. “Mark came in one night wearing a matching dark blue twill shirt and trouser outfit [and] I went out and bought one just like it,” Wann recalled for Masterworks Broadway in 2010. Eventually, the uniforms evolved into gas station garb, with oval name patches over the pockets, and the repertoire for what would become Pump Boys and Dinettes began to grow. “The Cattleman management soon grew tired of this nonsense and showed us the saloon door,” Wann said. But the show went on. Before long, Wann and Hardwick had formed a band, joined by John Foley, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, and John Schimmel. The group, Pump Boys and Dinettes, launched their musical of the same name as a dramatization of the song sets once performed at The Cattleman. Pump Boys and Dinettes premiered on Broadway in 1982, with the six band members in the spotlight as the ensemble cast of characters you’ll meet today, pumping gas, serving coffee, and singing about the simpler things. The musical snagged a Tony nomination for Best Musical, as well as four Drama Desk Award nominations, running for over a year before productions spread to London and Chicago. So enjoy the show, and allow yourself to be entertained, swept into a world of fishin’ and farmer tans, far away from the chaos of city life—just as these songs were meant to do from the very beginning. REFLECTIONS ON KIDSTAGE BY MICHAEL KRENNING Village Theatre KIDSTAGE is hard at work during the summer months, and this year was no exception. With fully-produced SummerStock and Summer Independent shows taking place in Issaquah and Everett, 600 students took advantage of the many opportunities to perform, produce, and grow. Though I’m now busy finishing a degree at Western Washington University, I spent many summers on stage in the Summer Independent productions of Assassins, Children of Eden, and Catch Me If You Can. I also performed in the KIDSTAGE and Village Originals co-production of Hello! My Baby this past winter. Summer Independent, which this year staged 9 to 5 and Sweeney Todd, is an entirely student-produced show where tuition is paid through volunteering and service at Village Theatre–making the experience accessible for kids from all backgrounds. It’s uplifting to spend the summer surrounded by peers, knowing that the creative team is learning just as much as the performers. The KIDSTAGE motto is “Skills for theatre, skills for life.” It’s something I didn’t take to heart until I had ended my time there—but it is absolutely true. You may have also heard “the world is a stage,” and I think that is what the KIDSTAGE motto 16 VILLAGE THEATRE is trying to make poignant. A good actor listens and reacts entirely in the moment without any manufacturing; it should all feel organic even if it has been rehearsed numerous times. Confidence in your ability to be present on stage, to completely listen in to the band and your fellow actors, is a skill I learned in KIDSTAGE that has transformed the way I respond to life outside of the theatre as well. The mentors I've found through theatre have taught me to live an organic, genuine life where I take personal responsibility for my choices. Our communities are lucky to have an organization that works hard to see kids become the best performers, artists, leaders, and genuine people they can be. There are so many factors in our everyday lives that suppress our inner-self and tell us, “You’re not good enough.” KIDSTAGE helped show me my worth. Through KIDSTAGE, I was shown how much I could grow and learn to believe in a version of me that loves others and loves himself. I know that this compassion will continue to be fostered at KIDSTAGE, and I hope others will be able to share in the joy and growth I got out of this program.
