Welcome to the Fenton Manor leisure centre
in Stoke for this, our 35th British Winter Guard
Championships. We return to Fenton Manor
for the 3rd consecutive year after making it
our home in 2012. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of the centre staff for
their help in making our events run as smoothly
as possible.
This year WGUK welcomes the return of Harmony to the circuit
and Winter Festival from Ireland who have taken the time to
travel and enter the 2014 season. At today’s event we have
returned to the usual 4 classes, with no units this year fielding
a World class. We have 35 guards representing 17 organisations
in competition. We also welcome an exhibition performance
by the Buccaneers Mini corps from Essex during the day.
During 2014 WGUK continued our policy of sanctioning shows
around England and would like to thank the organisations who
continue to sponsor shows on our behalf – Anchormen,
Avengers, Mayflower, Northern Academy, Oracle and Southern
Knights. WGUK also sponsored the first show of the season here
at Fenton Manor and we also hosted the very successful WGI-UK
regional which was fully supported by WGI who supplied the
panel of judges for the event, along with trophies for the top 3
units in each class. It was the first time for a number of years
that the UK has held an international regional event, which was
also supported by the Dutch unit Passie who travelled many
hours to attend the event. We also welcomed Moziac from
France who travelled over for the contest in Burgess Hill
at the beginning of March and special mention must be made
to Winter Festival from Ireland who made their way over
the Irish Sea no less than 4 times to be full members
of WGUK this season.
The end of the 2013 season saw Mark Nicholson elected by the
judges and appointed by the board as the Judges coordinator.
The 2014 season has not been without its challenges for Mark
and the team but it has also seen some great programme
training events, including an event run with the WGI judges
during their time in the UK. Moving Forward- Mark has also
had to direct the training and education this season which
has seen the judges continuing to educate, develop and refresh.
I would like to congratulate Mark on his first season
in this role and appreciate the hard work and dedication
he has given. The tabulating team that is Ann and John Legon
have once again worked tirelessly and supported every event,
travelling all over the country supporting
the Judges with administration services
and tabulating. Also special mention to
the two young ladies, Ellen and Kate
Oates, who run their legs off at every
event working as judge’s runners, we very
much appreciate the time that they give.
This season saw the introduction of the
UK Fan Network. This new venture has
been a resounding success and owes a great deal of the success
to Lee Court, who has put an uncountable amount of hours into
getting shows online to you as quickly as possible. And with
an ever growing back catalogue will keep WGUK and DCUK
members and fans occupied for many hours enjoying the guards
and bands of the past create and develop into the incredibly
talented groups they are today. Lee will also once again be
creating the Championships DVD for 2014.
I must offer a very big thank you to all the WGUK staff
and volunteers, not only for their help today but the WGUK
events this season, from the arena set up crew to the workers
who tirelessly work the doors, warm up, sound system,
judges recording downloading, the referee’s and announcer,
without these people the events would not have been
a success. I would also like to thank Chris Gibbs for assisting
with the coordination of today’s event, and to Nigel Brown
for his support as Treasurer of MPAUK and introducing me
to the world of finance.
So to round up my year as Chair. Firstly thanks to the Guard
Directors for having the confidence in me to do the role.
Taking over from Mark Gutteridge was never going to be
an easy task as his were very big shoes to fill and the work
he had done previously to build our activity is a credit to him.
I would like to thank him for his help and guidance in my
transition. The job is certainly not without its challenges but
with the help and constant support of Alan Thompson it has
been an incredibly rewarding one once you stand back and
appreciate the hard work and dedication you see when all of our
performers take to the arena. They are all a credit to the activity.
I would like to finish off by thanking you the supporters for your
unwavering support for the members and WGUK throughout the
season and today.
I hope you all have a fantastic day and I hope to see you all again
in 2015

It is my privilege to present my second end of season report for the
Judging Team as Judges Co-ordinator.
2014 has been both a challenging and exciting season for the
Judging Team, with numbers slightly down on the previous
year due to either activity involvement or work commitments.
Our dedicated “Training College Weekend” was held in late
November in Cannock, saw 12 returning judges plus 4 new
trainees. The event was facilitated by Edwin Beens (Technical
Manager from CGN), the Caption Supervisors of Trevor
Tomalin (Effect), Matt Johnson (Design), Darren Darton
(Equipment & Movement) and myself, with further training
days in both January prior to the first show of the season and
also following the WGI UK Regional in February with
colleagues from WGI, combined with ongoing caption based
“Home Study”.
By the commencement of the season we had 14 judges
available and were able to welcome into our ranks the
following individuals:

• Richard Gubby
Throughout the season there has been good and
constructive two-way dialogue between the Judging Team
and competing units but as stated in my report last season it
still remains our intention to jointly develop with units more
realistic and accessible methods of communication and
awareness events in relation to the approach and application
of the judging system.
As we move into the closed season our focus will be on the
“RECRUITMENT” of new blood into the Judging Team, so if

only and are only awarded to marching members.
The significant change is that the service is based on
performing at WGUK events and not as previously
awarded for service to an individual organisation.

2014 SPICE A Class brings to you “The Boy Who Lived” our own
interpretation of Harry Potter. This year has been magical, the
members have pushed themselves to their limits and I couldn’t be
prouder of them. The support they have shown to my role as
Guard Director of SPICE has been amazing. We have all enjoyed
the season and the show has been great to develop and create. I
would also like to thank Brian Hitchcock for his continued
dedication to SPICE and always being there to help us bring the

IN THE WIND
“Kansas's 1978 acoustic hit song, Dust in the Wind, is a reflective
song about mortality's inevitability and one's insignificance within
the total picture”... Kerry Livgren - composer
Thurrock Academy's senior Guard will use the song ‘Dust in the
Wind’ to portray how insignificant life is compared to a gust of
wind. To help the audience visualise the power and gentleness of
the wind, Thurrock Academy will be performing as the most visual
thing that we all see in everyday life when a breeze is gusting in an
open place, the sheet of newspaper.
A big, big thank you to all our Juniors members and staff, cadets
members and staff, floor crew and support staff for helping ‘clear
up the mess’ we could not have done it without you. To the floor
guys and scenery builders for their constant commitment. To
Reece Crisp for the music construction and Paul Morgan for added
musical extras. To the back room staff for uniform alterations etc.
And to the Guard hope you enjoyed their performance through
the season and will be looking to ‘blow you away’ today

This year Winter Festival are proud to present their 2014 show
entitled 'How do you feel today?'. Taking the music of Gabriel
Aplin as a base, the show is about showing your emotions and not
being afraid to ask how someone feels, along with making sure
you are ready to hear the truthful answer. It aims to encourage
people to be there to support each other no matter what mood
lies behind the door.

this phrase has never held more meaning. The impact of computer
and video games can be seen in politics, television, popular music,
and Hollywood.

Thurrock Academy Juniors would like to take you on an
evolutionary journey through video game history, bringing some of
it's biggest achievements to life. We'll have you platforming pixels
