Welcome to the Fenton
Manor Leisure Centre in
Stoke on Trent for this, our
36th British Winter Guard
Championships. We return
to Fenton Manor
for the 4th consecutive year
after making it our home in 2012. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank all of
the centre staff for their help in making our
events run as smoothly as possible.
This year WGUK welcomes the return of Winter Festival
from Ireland and welcomes new unit Aurora also from
Ireland to the circuit who unfortunately due to illness could
not complete the season. However we wish them well and
hope for their return for the 2016 season. This season has
also seen the return of World Class with Mayflower being
the only competing unit. We have 36 guards representing
16 organisations in competition. We also welcome an
exhibition performance by the Blue Barons Mini Corps
from Scotland during the day.

services and tabulating. Also to the Judges runners who
work hard at all our events, thank you very much to Ellen
and Kate Oates and Yasmine and Thalia Clarke, we very
much appreciate the time that they give.
I must offer a very big thank you to all the WGUK staff and
volunteers, not only for their help today but the WGUK
events this season, from the arena set up crew to the
workers who tirelessly work the doors, warm up, sound
system, the referee’s Douglas

policy of sanctioning shows around

shows on our behalf – Anchormen,
Mayflower, Oracle and Southern
Knights. WGUK also sponsored the first
show of the season here at Fenton
Manor and we also hosted in Grantham our 2nd successful
WGI-UK regional which was fully supported by WGI who
supplied the panel of judges for the event, along with
trophies for the top 3 units in each class.
The end of the 2014 season once again saw Mark
Nicholson elected by the judges and appointed by the
board as the Judges coordinator. The 2015 season has
seen growth within the judging community welcoming
both new and returning judges. We also welcome WGI
judge Shirley Dorritie to the team as Education Director
Today will bring a close to another successful season of
inspiring shows from so many talented performers. From
the youngest to the oldest they are all a credit to the
activity. I would like to finish off by thanking you the
supporters for your unwavering support for the members
and WGUK throughout the season and today.
I hope you all have a fantastic day and I hope to see you
all again in 2016

WGUK Judges
It is my privilege to present my third end of season report for the
Judging Team as Judges Co-ordinator.
2015 has been an exciting season for the Judging Team, with
numbers similar to the previous year.
Our dedicated “Judges Training College & System Awareness
Weekend” was held in late November in Stoke on Trent,
which saw 11 returning judges plus 2 new judges. The event
was facilitated by Shirley Dorritie, our newly appointed
Judges Education Director and was a great interactive
educational event both for judges and instructors highlighting
the approach and application of the WGI Judging System.
Further training days have taken place in both early January
prior to the first show and also at the WGI UK Regional in
February, combined with ongoing caption based “Home
Study Exercises”.
By the commencement of the season we had 13 judges
available to judge and were able to welcome into our ranks
the following individuals:

• Helen Bassett
Throughout the season there has been good and constructive
two-way dialogue between the Judging Team and competing
units but as stated in my report last season it still remains our
intention to jointly develop with units more realistic and
accessible methods of communication and awareness events
in relation to the approach and application of the judging
system.
As we move into the closed season our focus will be on the
“RECRUITMENT” of new blood into the Judging Team, so if

Stemming from All Ireland Champions Viking Drum Corps, the Irish
Winter Guard Champions portray ‘Amber’ who is struggling with
her addiction from an early age as her life spirals out of control.
She pushes everyone away and will not accept any help but after a
sudden realisation, something clicked and as she got older she
joined a support group where she found what she needed ...
Help!! Throughout the production we see Amber on the road to
‘Recovery’ and we also see what exactly a support group can
achieve if you stay strong ... Aurora would like to wish all
competing guards the very best of luck at this years Finals.

the story of Jack Harper working to save the planet, whilst having
memories of his past life. Although this has been a tough season

This year we decided we were going to try something different,
something no-one would expect from moonlight. We have taken
the girls on a journey through the 'streets of London' and they are
looking forward to taking the audience through the same journey.
The A guard would like to wish Alecia good luck in her 1st year
(of many) with us, also welcome back to the performance floor
Cherie, after 15years of sitting watching us and welcome back to
our mouthy Tori, best of luck girls!

in the Park
Located in Wakefield, Yorkshire, the Anchormen Juniors take you
on a tour of Bretton Hall Sculpture Park with their show program
called ‘Walk in the Park’. It is autumn, a carpet of golden leaves as
far as you can see cover the ground. You are surrounded by a
collection of handmade sculptures perfectly pictured by Ivy
Evergreens, the subtle colours of blue Chrysanthemums and a
dense of purple Verbena Rigida flowers. Using our eyes as we take
you on our journey, can you see all the sculptures that we can see?

Listen intently when one of Patsy Lorano’s men reminiscing on one
of the most eventful days back in the 1920’s. They were great days
in Chicago until Capello cheated at cards. On that day Loreno
stated “Revenge is gonna be sweet” however would Capello have
the nerve to take on Lorano’s men, as it turns out Capello ‘would’
have the last laugh.
This group have taken a massive step on the entertainment side of
colourguard, and has become a crowd favourite.

pretty building a snowman can be. Look for the nuances that will
help set the scene and wait for the magical ending ... OLAF.

standards in their performance, the staff are extremely proud of

MINI CORPS
Blue Barons
Glasgow
The Blue Barons Mini Corps is comprised of veterans of the 1980s
and 1990s period of drum corps, which is reflected in the music
and show we have chosen to present. Half of the performers are
alumni of the Glasgow Blue Barons Drum & Bugle Corps and also
includes alumni from every other Glasgow Corps.
The Glasgow Blue Barons were formed in 1979 and last performed
in the United Kingdom in 1988 at a DCUK show that included the
esteemed Madison Scouts. The mini-corps version of this former
DCUK and European Championship winning corps was formed in
late 2013 and performed for the first time at DCI Soundsport,
Bristol, on 21 March 2015. In addition to receiving a warm
welcome and hearty applause from an appreciative audience, the
mini-corps performers were delighted to achieve a Gold award
and the title of Champions at this enjoyable event.
We appreciate the opportunity to perform at your Championships
event and would like to thank WGUK for its continuing support for
the mini-corps activity in the UK.
Our music selection today includes some things old and some
things new. We commence with themes from the movie
‘Brigadoon’ with a nod to the old days with ‘Highland Laddie’s
Wee Wall of Sound’. Our second piece is ‘Rainmaker’ composed
by guitarist Earl Klugh. The closing section is a medley of Canto
Del Viento/ Que Lastima/ Topaz. We hope you enjoy the show as
much as we enjoy performing for you.
