The UK now has the largest number of craft breweries per capita in the world with
almost 1,600 operating breweries, a figure increasing weekly, but with the introduction
of each unique beer, comes other decisions. The starting point is usually cask, draught
and kegged beer sold from the brewery and in local pubs, but it is not long before most
brewers desire to bottle their products to increase sales into new markets. The brewer
is then faced with two options, being either to use a contract bottling company, usually
some distance away involving high transport costs, logistics and lack of flexibility,
or alternatively, consideration of installing their own bottling line. The latter involves high financial
committment in specialist equipment, and further costs in additional building space, overheads, utilities
and in some cases personnel. Numerous craft brewers and other drinks producers have invested in such
equipment which frequently becomes somewhat under utilised, being operated a mere day or two a
month and thus providing a very poor return on investment.
The ultimate scenario, until now not available, is to have access to a bottling line on site, as and when
required, be it for a few hours, a few days, or longer periods to suit bottling schedules and without the
cost and hassle of transport and handling. Thus the product is BOTTLED ON LOCATION without heavy
capital investment and the required expertise.
CARMICHAEL, an Edinburgh based engineering company since 1986, involved in the design and
manufacture of patented high performance labelling machines used by Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle,
Heineken, Lucozade, Sara Lee, Clorox and other prominent brands worldwide has launched, a totally
new concept mobile bottling operation. The bottling line and associated equipment is totally designed and
manufactured by Carmichael Engineering Group and is fully installed in specialist vehicles. Carmichael
Mobile Bottling will also be commencing operations in USA in 2017.
