“Fighting Back” Against Bullying
On May 31st a new book hit the
Amazon.com Bookshelves, a
book dedicated to “fighting back”
against the damage being done by
bullying in our schools and our
community.
Written by Pilsung
ATA’s Co-Owner and Senior
Instructor, Brian Myers, the book
From Bully to Black Belt: Using
Martial Arts to Fight The Damage
of Bullying takes readers down a
different path in the effort to
stop the damage being done to
our youth by bullying.
The concept presented
is based on the idea that bullying
should be attacked at the source..
While conventional wisdom says
“bully-proof” the potential victims, many Child Experts are
beginning to suggest there is a
better way.
“
Young children need to be taught
how to interact—to be inclusive, to
tolerate differences among their
friends, to say when they are uncomfortable or hurt, to accept constructive criticism instead of seeing
it as rejection, and to know to
whom they can go for help and
guidance.
”

Staci J. Schwartz

Pilsung ATA Offers Summer Fun
The Staff at Pilsung ATA know
that entertaining kids during the
summer can be difficult, especially for families in which he adults
work all day. To help out, and
give the kids something better
than “daycare” to look forward
to, Pilsung offers a series of Summer Fun Camps.
6/24—Gum Do (Sword) Camp:
We enjoy giving the Freedom
Parade watchers something fancy
to enjoy. Come to this camp to
learn how to use the sword offensively and defensively! ATA
Students are then invited to
show off their skills during the
Parade 6/25! (9A-4P, $69)
7/11-15—Star Wars Camp:
We love the Star Wars movies!
Some much fun can be had as we
pretend to be Jedi, Stormtroopers, Droids and more! During
camp all Young Jedi will be making their own “Light Saber” and
learning how to wield it! (9A-4P,
$60/Day - $275 for 5 Days)

It's a Wonderful Life
This year marks ten years in
Anna's House! We will be
celebrating this summer with
our 10th anniversary gala - An
Evening in Paris, at the Lucas
Estate on June 24. Tickets are
on sale now. Join us to hear
more about our past 10 years
and our future while supporting the vision we are working
to implement!
We're continuing to seek support for our new community
center through partnerships
with local businesses for in-
kind, financial, and volunteer
support. We are so grateful
for all who have stepped up
already.
We're always looking for some
additional hands during our
grocery distribution through
the summer months. With the
vacation time, we often have
fewer groups come out to
volunteer with us. It's a great
time to bring your family or
friends out to work with us!

Your Attitude Determines Your Altitude!
“P.M.A. Our name
says it all, always
have a Positive
Mental Attitude!”
Originally founded as Pilsung
Martial Arts (PMA) the
school’s very name spelled out
the concept behind everything
taught.
When asked why she
chose to name her school
“Pilsung”, the Korean word for
“personal victory”, Mrs. Myers
responded, “That makes the
school P.M.A. Our name says
it all, always have a Positive
Mental Attitude! That is what I
want my students to carry
with them every day.”
Today that focus can
be seen from the ATA Tigers
Program, teaching better personal habits to 4 through 6
year olds, all the way up to the
Legacy Program, where new
Instructors are taught proper
coaching and instructional skills
to compliment their strong
martial arts skills. Every program and every class is infused
with the P.M.A. spirit. Every
student, regardless of age
learns the Life and Leadership
skills to reach their dreams.
Pilsung ATA Students understand that their
“attitude determines altitude”
that only a Positive Mental
Attitude will carry them all the
way to their goals.

Montessori Was a Black Belt…
in child development. While
there is no prevailing evidence that Dr.
Maria Montessori was ever involved in
any of the traditional martial arts, many
of those who follow in her footsteps
today would agree that she would have
very likely supported this type of
activity.
Her philosophy focuses on
the child’s whole self- physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. The same
can be said for those who are studying
a martial art. In each setting, the teacher must understand a student in these
areas to guide them through their natural development as it pertains to the
skills being taught.
Dr. Montessori believed that
all children’s actions served a purpose.
Although the reason or motive may not
always be understood by all who observe the action, she saw that children
developed through their personal
efforts and their level of engagement.
She once said, “The starting point of
mobility is not motor, but mental,” but
she saw that these two concepts went
hand in hand as gross motor movement
supported brain development in the
areas of self-control and coordination,
and a strong neurological state provided
a foundation in the sensory input of
observation, comparison, and
judgement.
The Montessori classroom
dynamic is one that relies on freedom
with discipline. This means that as
the child works independently, the
teacher acts as a guide to help them
hone their skills. The environment has
been prepared for children to move
freely and select work to suit their
intrinsic drive. Open shelves are carefully organized with materials that
should be appealing to the eye and
invite the children to work with them.
As items are selected, the teacher
observes how they are used and makes
mental or written notes to drive their
instruction for that particular child.
The teacher then later presents
material in a way that supports that
child’s background knowledge and prior
presentations. Children are expected
to use items respectfully and responsibly so as to maintain their freedom to
access them.
The success of a progressive
classroom is termed “normalized”. To
Montessori this meant “the children are
working as if I am not even there.” As
children become familiar with the routines and order of a Montessori classroom, they begin to have expectations
for how they conduct themselves.
Many who are unfamiliar with this type
of set-up are often surprised by the
industrious buzz of the classroom as
children walk to and from the shelves
lined with carefully prepared work that
build on their individual skill levels.
The students are also expected to uphold the construct of a
peaceful community or family-like structure where everyone has their role to
play and is a contributing member.
Through lessons in social graces and
courtesies, children experience how to
interpret and express their emotions
and those of others. As they interact
with their peers, they see how their
behaviors can impact those who share
their environment, both positively and
negatively. They learn to respect one
another for their strengths and those
which present a greater challenge.
Most importantly, they learn to value
themselves as a kind and responsible
member of a group.
Montessori’s models of
education have been in place for more
than a hundred years since they originated. They have spanned the globe
and influenced numerous cultures and
professional practices. As a practicing
martial artist in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I hope
that one day I can also achieve the level
of ability attained by Maria Montessori.
