Potomac Horse Fever 38 In recent years, Potomac horse fever (PHF) has caused increased concern among members of the horse community. This disease is caused by the bacterium Neorickettsia risticii and typically occurs in late spring, summer and early fall months with the highest number of cases in July, August and September depending on that years weather. Lifecycle The lifecycle of N. risticii is complicated and includes various animal vectors. The bacterium lives in flukes (flatworms) that develop in aquatic snails and are released into bodies of water. Horses grazing near freshwater creeks, rivers and lakes may inadvertently ingest flukes carrying PHF and potentially become infected. In addition to this route of transmission, insects inhabiting aquatic environments may pick up infected flukes and carry the bacterium long distances. This means the horse does not need to be in close vicinity to a water source to become infected with PHF. Infection can even occur while housed inside a barn. Infected aquatic insects may be attracted by barn lights or heat where they can inadvertently land in a horse’s water bucket or feed. Transmission of PHF may then occur following ingestion of these dead aquatic insects. Symptoms The initial symptoms of PHF can be subtle. In the first stages of the disease, horses are anorexic (off grain), febrile (feverish), depressed, and have decreased gut motility followed by diarrhea and mild signs of colic. If left untreated horses can develop toxemia (toxins in the blood), laminitis, severe colic signs and dehydration which can result in the need for euthanasia. Ontario Quarter Horse News, August 2015 Treatment Diagnosing PHF can be very difficult. Because early treatment is crucial to preventing the onset of severe symptoms, veterinarians often begin treatment based on clinical signs and if the horse responds to this treatment then the likely cause of illness in PHF. Generally, veterinarians use intravenous oxytetracycline (an antibiotic) as an initial treatment. In severe cases, the infected horse may require transport to a large animal referral hospital where we can provide additional supportive care, IV fluids and intensive monitoring. Diagnosis Potomac horse fever is not contagious; however, other diseases with similar symptoms (such as salmonella) are contagious. Therefore, it is important to take biosecurity precautions such as separating the sick horse from other horses, washing hands after working with each horse and not sharing grooming equipment between horses until the cause of the illness is known. The diagnosis of PHF is usually done through a PCR test which can identify bacterial DNA in a horse’s white blood cells; however, this test can be expensive. Prevention -‐Restrict grazing near bodies of water -‐Turn off barn lights when not in use -‐Do not place food or water directly under barn lights -‐Keep stored feed covered -‐Clean water sources frequently -‐Vaccination may minimize signs and speed recovery of the disease and is therefore recommended in areas where PHF is seen. 1. Although it is still summer, and many of us are busy with showing, now is the time to start thinking about the future of our Association while suggestions and concerns are fresh in our minds. We would like to remind our members that many of the OQHA By-Laws need to be changed at the Annual General Meeting and voted on by the general membership. If you would like to propose any rule changes, please email or call Shawna, so your changes can be published prior to November, in guidance with the By-Law change rules. Shawna (613) 913-7262 or [email protected]. We would also like to call out to anyone wishing to get more involved with their Association to think about the possibility of joining 42 Full page 7.5” side x 10” tall 1/2 page horizontal 7.5” wide x 4.875” tall Carolyn McCallum W.D. In order for our Association’s continued success, we need a strong board and executive. As with any business, it is always good to continue to draw in new members to voice new ideas and suggestions. If you would like more information on what is involved with being an OQHA director, feel free to discuss with any of our 2015 Executive or Directors. Be sure to share with friends at the next show! Penne with Italian Sausage (Julie Huppé) INGREDIENTS 12 plum tomatoes 4 hot Italian sausage or I like to have 2 mild, 2 hot 1 onion finely chopped 4 cloves of garlic 1/3 cup olive oil 1/2 cup red wine 1 tbsp fresh oregano leaves 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped 4 cups penne salt and pepper PREPARATION 1. With a sharp knife, make a cross-shaped incision at the end of each tomato and in boiling water blanch them for 1-2 min. Then place tomatoes in cold water, peel and remove seeds. (I’ve tried this recipe with fresh and canned tomatoes and it’s not comparable...go with fresh!) 2. Boil your sausages for 5 minutes. Let cool and slice. 3. Cook your onion and garlic in oil. Add the sausages until onions begin to brown. Add the wine and reduce heat. 4. Add the tomatoes for about 15 min. then add oregano and basil. Toss the pasta and voila! by Lynn Riley Slow Cooker Lasagne (Judi Woodley) INGREDIENTS 1 package Oven Ready Lasagne Noodles 2 jars Favourite Spaghetti Sauce(I like Catelli Vegetable) 1 to 2 packages of shredded Cheese (Kraft Italian Blend) 1 lb ground beef (fried into little pieces) OPTIONAL PREPARATION Place a small amount of sauce in the bottom of the slow cooker and layer with noodles (you may need to break some to fit) cover noodles with more sauce, then beef, then cheese and continue to layer for about 4 or five layers ending with the cheese. Cook on low for six to eight hours scoop out and serve - Voila dinner is ready! Hints: I like to fry my beef at home and freeze in small freezer bag as it is easier at the show and saves time in the morning. I have made this for my vegetarian friends without the beef and it is equally as good. Next time you are in the states stop at a grocery store or the local Walmart and pick up “slow cooker” liner bags (where they sell plastic wrap) - these are so handy as you use it to line the slow cooker and when you are done your meal you just pull it out and the slow cooker is left clean! If you have a recipe that you would like to share in the next issue of the OQHA News, please email me at [email protected] Dad’s Cool Whip Cherry Delight (Christine St. Jean) 9 inch pan Line bottom of pan with Graham Wafers Cover with 2 cans of cherry pie filling Then another layer Graham Wafers Top with either whipping cream or Cool Whip leave in fridge overnight.
