October 23, 2013 Vol. 19 No. 14 News Periodical Mailed on October 17 UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales Sells Eclectic Plymouth, Wisconsin Living Estate at Auction Article & photos by Brian Maloney Furniture winner of the sale – a fancy oak buffet that sold for $500. Auctioneer Tim Schwartz sells the best of the vintage firearms – a Winchester Model 94 30/30 that fetched $400. It took a surprising $350 to buy this Kalamazoo Elite enameled cast iron stove. Perfect autumn weather meant a great crowd of bidders for an UP-N-AT-UM estate auction, held just outside of Plymouth, Wisconsin on September 22nd. Sold was the living estate of Patt and the late Bud Dick, lifelong collectors and owners of the former Moby Dick’s Campground. There was something for everybody at this one, with plenty of furniture from Victorian to vintage, two mechanical pinball machines, and some choice vintage lighting. Among the many auction highlights: A 1930’s Caille Superior Bell ‘Sphinx’ slot machine that made $725, and a 1998 Jaguar “project car” that drove off for $3,900. Continued on pages 20 & 21 Jackie & Jim Pottratz of UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales (right) decided to sell this estate by auction - so hired Tim & Dawn Schwartz of Schwartz Auction Service for bid-calling duties. That 1998 Jaguar XK8 in the photo? A little rough around the edges and not running, it still sold for a solid $3,900. There was lots of interest in this original-condition 1930’s Caille Superior Bell “Sphinx” slot machine, which later sold for $725. Three Days of Sun & Fun at Minnesota’s Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days Antique Show Article & photos by Brian Maloney Oronoco, just the name conjures up visions of streets filled with antiques & collectibles for as far as the eye can see. It wasn’t a dream though on August 16th through the 18th - it was real - for those were the dates of this summer’s venerable Downtown Oronoco, Minnesota Gold Rush Antique Show & Flea Market. Judging from the Interesting crowd I’d found there, it seems like just about every antiques enthusiast in the Americana Midwest turned out along with me. Surprisingly, it’s a less-than four-hour drive from my home in southern Wisconsin. It’s is a picturesque little hamlet - and a growing one too, thanks to its proximity to the Mayo Clinic. It still retains its small-town charm though, with historic homes lining the streets and beautiful Lake Shady to paddle your canoe across. If it’s your first trip to Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days, you’ll quickly realize that this is not your ordinary antiques show. The town’s normal population of fewer than 1,000 often swells to twenty times that for the event, which is always held on the third weekend in August. Another unique aspect of the show: it’s a town-sponsored non-profit event, with all proceeds helping to fund many different community projects. Longtime Oronoco resident Carol Olson coordinates the event. “The show was started back in 1972 by local antique shop proprietor Earl Berg” Carol told me. “He named the show Gold Rush Days after the short-lived real gold rush here in 1857.” It turned out there wasn’t really much gold in the Zumbro River that runs right through town, but there sure is plenty of treasure to be found in the streets come the third weekend of August each and every year. That first privately organized show moved to Rochester more than two decades ago, so the town decided to start their own community-based event, calling it the Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days. You can find more about the town’s and the show’s interesting histories at www.oronoco.com and www.goldrushmn.com. The show opens at dawn, Friday through Sunday. It feels like a carnival, with all the streets closed to traffic, and numerous food vendors and the like scattered among the hundreds of antiques dealers. Be sure to arrive early to get a good parking space, stop by for a big pancake breakfast compliments of the local VFW Chapter, and you’ll have until dark to shop-till-you-drop. And if you need a break, sit down and take in one of the many free seminars at Gold Rush Days. Speakers this year included Sandy Erdman’s Trash to Treasure Workshop and keynote speaker Sue Whitney of Junkmarket Style fame. The hundreds of exhibitors range from pros who travel from several states away to local hobby dealers, some who you’ll recognize, and many more you’ll only find here at Oronoco. In fact, Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days has redoubled its efforts to attract the best antiques purveyors for this season and into the future, with enlarged dealer spaces - and nearly two-dozen vendor hosts to attend to their needs. Iowa’s own van Deest Antiques & Art had among the most impressive displays at the show, with an amazing array of classic Americana, folk art, and more. My favorite there: a wonderful pair of globe-topped columns from a Burlington, Iowa Masonic Temple, price tag $875. Other items of note there included everything from a carved & painted wooden swordfish weathervane figure ($985) to a Missourifound driftwood rocker with family history, asking price $700. Badger State vendor Miller’s Antiques came with interesting finds in many categories, from a mixed-color group of vintage Herman Miller fiberglass chairs ($275 each) to a folky painted tin Pow Wow sign, 4’ long and priced at $325. I only saw a fraction of what the hundreds of dealers had to offer, but I found something interesting at nearly every booth I stopped at. All in all, it was quite a day. The weather - and the dealers - couldn’t have been nicer, and with that many dealers in one place, you know you’re going to go home with something great! For information on next year’s Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days, you can contact event coordinator Carol Olson at 507-367-2111, or visit their website www.goldrushmn.com. And as always, keep an eye out for updates on next year’s show in the Auction Action Antique News! The tiny town of Oronoco, Minnesota’s popula- It all started right here at Berg’s Antiques tion swells many-fold during the three-day event, in Oronoco, Minnesota way back in 1972 and grew into a town-wide event that’s when nearly every street & yard are crammed now among the largest in the Midwest! with countless treasures - and shoppers! Two unusual advertising pieces from Steve Studer Antiques: the Milwaukee Milorganite thermometer priced at $110, the Athletic People Drink 7up framed sign at $125. 715-549-6345 Take your pick of any of these four vintage Herman Miller fiberglass chairs at Miller’s Antiques for the same $275. 715-963-1100 Toy purveyor Steve Studer Antiques brought along this classic BMC Fire Dept. Chief pedal car ($545) and well-loved AFC Airflow pedal Plane - $495. 715-549-6345 At one Iowa vendor’s booth alone, I found this restored vintage barber chair ($450), a nicely carved cherry fireplace mantel, and for those more adventurous types a 1930s OBGYN exam table with stirrups - $575. Miller’s Antiques brought some Wisconsin Northwoods pieces, like this 4’-long tin ‘Pow Wow’ sign, asking price $325. 715-963-1100 7 Continued on page 8 Minnesota’s Rick Simpson had perhaps the best selection of vintage advertising at Oronoco, including dozens of thermometers of every description. 320-677-2307 Second Chance Antiques quickly sold this ornate oak bookcase (for $1,750) but still had a nice wainscot cupboard in a crackle finish, price tag $575. 920-849-9241 More great advertising from Rick Simpson: the painted wood Ford sign set priced at $1,000, the 6’ long wooden Roller Skating sign at $400. 320-677-2307 Two Arts & Crafts standouts from Iowa’s Phil Taylor Antiques: the 36” wide oak sideboard priced at $395, the alloriginal Harden oak rocker at $495. 641-799-1097 At Worthwhile Collectibles, a Wisconsin’s L&L mint-in-box 1959 Chatty Cathy Antiques had a good show, with sold doll ($250) dwarfs a 1969 signs on most of his restored furniture pieces by the time I stopped by. Platinum Blonde Barbie in her original swimsuit - $59. 952-297-5828 A charming Mother Goose scene adorned this child’s press-back rocker at Out and About Antiques - $350. 563-880-2930 Two interesting building trade-related salesman’s samples from Out and About Antiques: the Warner Cloztite Hanger #58 priced at $550, the Numetal Weather Strips at $185. 563-880-2930 Horsefeathers Antiques came from Shawnee Mission, Kansas with some wonderful period furnishings, my favorite this Federal fireplace mantel, a good buy at only $375. 913-677-5566 My painted furniture favorite at Oronoco: the exuberantly paint-decorated Virginia trunk from Out and About Antiques, 41” in length and priced at $775. 563-880-2930 Below: I found this spaceage Schaefer Beer advertising clock at Horsefeathers Antiques, price tag $125. 913-677-5566 Pressed & applied carvings adorn this restored oak cupboard from L&L Antiques, asking price $1,295. 262-242-5226 Stark’s Antiques always brings a huge inventory of exceptional furniture, like this oak kitchen cabinet with pull-outs galore ($1,395) and 12-drawer vertical oak file cabinet - $385. Continued from pages 6 & 7 8 Quality antique American timepieces at Danny’s Antiques included this Ansonia Crystal Regulator, asking price $495. 651-776-6287 A great selection of Victor phonographs awaited at Stark’s Antiques, including this figured oak Model VV-XXV and table-top Model VV, take your pick of either for $2,350. Two vintage Mills slot machines from Stark’s Antiques: the 25-cent ‘1776’ priced at $1,150, the 777 ‘High Top’ at $1,200. I found another AFC Airflow pedal-plane at Stark’s Antiques, this with an older restoration and priced at $1,200. Among the eclectic mix at Simpler Times sat this 16” basket-form painted glass chandelier ($1,250) and variable-pitch boat propeller salesman’s sample - $1,500. 906221-2621 More folky finds from van Deest Antiques & Art: the Missouri driftwood rocker with full family provenance priced at $700, the tin 25-cent Hair Cut sign at $1,650. 319-363-1417 This 53” wooden swordfish weathervane figure ($985) from Van Deest Antiques & Art turned a few heads, as did the colorful carnival game wheel hanging over it, price tag $375. 319-363-1417 South Dakota’s Lincoln County Antiques Center always comes with a diverse range of artifacts, from this miner’s emergency breathing kit ($225) to a dated-1876 Scandinavian immigrant’s trunk, 26” in length and priced at $425. 605-987-4114 Folk Art Society of America The Folk Art Society of America, founded in 1987, has become a dynamic, nonprofit organization which advocates the discovery, study, documentation, preservation and exhibition of folk art, folk artists and folk art environments. Artists, educators, historians, writers, collectors, dealers, curators, museums, libraries and art enthusiasts from across the United States and around the world join together to share a common bond of interest in self-taught art and the unique individuals involved in its creation. The home page of the FASA website at www.folkart.org is pleasing to the eye. Against a rich dark green background, it features a piece of folk art, the name of the Society and logo, how to contact the the Society and seven simple links: About the Society, how to join, the Society's magazine, Calendar of events, Annual conference, Catalog of books and links to other folk art sites. Navigating the site couldn't be simpler and FASA seems to have all bases covered. The site certainly should give any first-time visitor a good feeling about the Folk Art Society of America. My destination: the UP-N-AT-UM living estate auction of Patt & the late Bud Dick, held onsite in rural Plymouth, Wisconsin. Lots of other folks must have had the same idea, as healthy crowd showed up for the Sunday morning sale. And scenic doesn’t begin to describe the Dick property, nestled in the heart of Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine State Forest. An UP-N-AT-UM estate auction, you said? You probably know them best as UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales, who’ve served central Wisconsin for two decades. Owners Jim & Jackie Pottratz have recently been selling select estates like this one at auction though, teaming up with local bid-callers Schwartz Auction Service. And freshman auctioneer Tim Schwartz proved to be a fast & efficient bid-caller, making quick work of the seemingly endless stream of collectibles and furnishings coming from the rambling Dick home. Pretty much name your category and it was here. Sporting collectibles? How about a classic Winchester #94 30/30, or an all-original early Elgin outboard motor. Arcade games? No shortage here - from that 1930s Caille ‘Sphinx’ slot machine to a Bally ‘Dixieland’ mechanical pinball machine to some early electronic bar games. Not a barfly? There was plenty here for you too, like some great vintage chandeliers, or a 4’-tall plaster Madonna. And auto racing enthusiasts got their fix with a nice set of vintage Road America (located only a few miles from the auction site) racing flags that sold for $200. The photos will give you an idea of what you missed! Auctioneer of the day was Tim Schwartz of Schwartz Auction Service, with UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales managing the auction. You can contact UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales at 920-893-9888, and Schwartz Auction service at 920-449-5838. If you’re interested in a property nestled in Wisconsin’s picturesque Kettle Moraine hills, the Dick home is currently for sale as well. Just give Re/Max realtor Tim Kapellen a call at 920-9806786 for all the details. And as always, be sure to keep an eye out for all of Three nice vintage chandeliers UP-N-AT-UM Estate Sales’ and Schwartz Auction Service’s upcoming proved the most popular of the lightevents in the Auction Action Antique News! ing, bringing up to $175 apiece. Two Bally mechanical pinball machines found ready buyers, the clean Dixieland model bringing $200, the non-working Magic Circle $65. A $120 bid took this vintage Chicago Coin Slap Shot arcade game. My furniture favorite of the sale: this oak sorting desk that was a good buy too, at $110. Contemporary hollow-body copper weathervane in the form of a sperm whale - $135. It seems like I’m always surprised at the prices that vintage dress-forms bring, like this one that fetched $160. Auctioneer Tim Schwartz finds a bidder for this funky Dick’s Club/Chop Suey sign that sold for $85. This leaded Below: There was enthusiastic bidglass transom ding for a set of vintage Road window America Race Track flags that fetched $110. ended up bringing a solid $200. A consolesized curved glass china cabinet made $325. A few religious artifacts crossed the block, including this 4’ tall plaster Madonna that sold for $125. A $40 bid took this as-is Elgin outboard motor. 21 Left: Yes, it looks crude now, but this Tombstone arcade shooting game was once state-of-the-art, and sold for $185. Potential bidders give a Bridgestone 90 (Japanese) dirt bike a once-over before the sale. It later sold for $295. Site of the auction was the former Moby Dick Campgrounds, nestled in the picturesque Kettle Moraine hills near Plymouth, Wisconsin. It’s for sale too if you’re interestChoice of slag-glass ed: just give Re/Max realtor Tim Kapellen a call at 920-980-6786 pendant shades - $65. The home’s basement was packed with oddities, from a marked Neiman Marcus brass telescope ($90), to vintage snowshoes ($65), to a mandolin that brought $60. Vintage cut-glass table lamp - $55. 19th century bargains included this barrel churn that went for $22.50. There were some outrageous lamps from the fifties through the seventies, including this acrylic floor lamp that made $55. Customers expect to be impressed at the Midwest Antique and Art Show and the same expectation will be especially true for this fall’s October show. It is NOT a typical midwest antiques show where customers grow accustomed to the usual . . . glass, china, and oak offerings. The Midwest show prides itself in providing unique objects usually only seen in magazines or reserved for the East or West coast audiences. It is difficult to describe the range of distinctive merchandise that is sold. Significant pieces of art, furniture, sculpture, period textiles, carvings, cabin-themed accessories, American Indian, paintings and a vast array of other interesting objects are hustled out the door to waiting vehicles with most patrons returning for additional purchases. The Collector’s Eye Show has an eager customer base that look forward to the show’s diversity and emphasis on late 19th to mid 20th century, high-end collectibles and antiques representing advertising, country store, toys, jewelry, early holiday, mid 20th century furniture and accessories and much more. The Collector’s Eye and the Midwest Antique and Art Show strongly compliment one another and provide shoppers with an expansive and ever-changing, quality shopping opportunity. The shows are in the same Expo Center building at the Hawkeye Downs fairgrounds located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at 4400 6th Street S.W., and a single $8 admission allows the customer access to both shows. The Midwest Show has 66 vendors and the Collector’s Eye has 44 so the $8 entrance fee allows access to two shows and 110 dealers. Additionally, Hawkeye Downs has no parking fee! Economy of scale and free parking make the combined Midwest and Collector’s Eye shows a bargain. Consider how far you would have to travel outside Iowa to find a comparable show with such a wide and varied selection of quality antiques, art and collectibles? Answer: a real, real long ways . . .! Please join us for our 27th year and 54rd show on Sunday, October 27, 2013. The shows begin at 10 a.m., and last until 4 p.m. Join the long lines waiting at the doors prior to 10 a.m., and see what the buzz and longevity of these shows is all about. Enthusiastic customers support quality shows and these two shows have a very loyal customer base. Want to see photos of the Spring Midwest and Collector’s Eye show’s dealer booths? Go to www.mwantiqueshow.com, click photos and then click the respective show logo to see the booths or “like us” on Facebook where booth photos will be posted Saturday evening, October 26th, for customer pre-show previews. Sometimes pictures are truly worth a thousand words. We look forward to your visit Sunday, October 27th. *IMPORTANT NOTE: to those customers who come the night before the show: there is a home Iowa Football game Saturday so making room arrangements now is a very good idea.
