Financial leaders say
locally owned banks donʼt
compete with each other
Why the “Truth Booth”
is coming to Nashville
Bankers working in several
of Nashville’s locally owned
banks are not surprised when
two Nashville financial institutions join forces. The move is
almost always meant to bolster
the confidence of a few grassroots investors who started the
company while the bank that
stays, keeping its name, is seen
by the public as supporting the
local economy.
That’s what happened last
Friday, July 1, when Pinnacle
Bank purchased Avenue Bank.
So far, top executives at several
other banks are not expecting
the effects of the acquisition
to make the market for new
clients any more competitive
for other local bank and wealth
management groups. But, for
national chains riding the economic surge in Nashville by
placing a branch here will feel
the change. “The local...

Tennessee.
“In the 15 plus years our
HELP trucks have been on the
road, they have proven to be an
invaluable resource for TDOT,
other first responders, and
the traveling public,” TDOT
Commissioner John Schroer
said. “Expanding the program
will help us maximize the efficiency of our transportation
system and better serve the citizens of our state.”
HELP trucks operate on
assigned routes which are
restricted to the core areas of
each city, so operators can
respond quickly to incidents
that have the most impact on
the total freeway system. The
routes sometimes vary by time
of day, and HELP trucks are
sometimes sent off regular
routes to help with traffic control at major incident scenes;
but patrols are maintained on
the assigned routes as much as
possible.
With the Nashville expansion of the HELP program will
come nine additional operators
and trucks, bringing the total
number to 33 and three expansion routes, including I-24 east
of Nashville, from Exit 57
(Harding Place) to Exit 78 (SR96) in Murfreesboro - two additional routes (additional 23
miles, and I-65 south of
Nashville, from Exit 78
(Harding Place) to Exit 65
(SR-96) - one additional route
(13 miles).
The lime-yellow HELP trucks
are equipped with a variety of
tools and emergency medical
equipment, to provide emergency services without charge,
and HELP operators do not
accept tips.
To contact a HELP driver,
motorists may call the local

Banks...
banks are taking away from
the bigger banks instead of
from each other. It’s rarely
head-to-head with commercial.
Many people want a new relationship because they are fed
up with a larger bank,” said
Truxton Trust Chairman &
Chief
Executive
Officer
Thomas S. Stumb.
However, he does predict
small businesses and individuals currently banking with
national entities will begin
looking at more local options
as people begin seeing the two
local banks become one.
“Banks think they need a
branch in Nashville. The grass
is always greener,” said Stumb.
Friday’s announcement was
one of many transitions that
banks have taken this year as
they seek a foothold in
Nashville. However, given the
entrepreneurial nature in
which Pinnacle originally
formed, some in the banking
community are concerned
what this means for bank startups.
But, others, like Jim
Rieniets, president and CEO of
INSBANK, a Nashville-based
bank and wealth management
group, sees excess in regulation, not a consolidation of
bank entities, as the cause for
the recent disappearance of
bank start-ups.
“It’s an unfortunate phenomenon for commercial entities that want close access to
decision makers that know the
area’s market. Banks are merging, consolidating and acquiring other banks, but not creating anything new,” said
Rieniets.
Yet, as Rieniets states, the
market has a way for correcting itself. “That’s capitalism.”

the library we tell Nashville’s
story, and the Truth Booth is a
new and exciting way to contribute to that story.”
Held in the lobby of the

tell “their truth” between 12

Youth volunteers take to the radio
When the “ON AIR” sign lights
up across the room at the non-profit, Radio Free Nashville, 107.1 FM.,
volunteer Krystle Couch takes a
deep breath and sets her music
playlist in motion.
For Couch and the other volunteers at Radio Free Nashville
(RFN), speaking to Middle Tennessee through the radio is all part
of a volunteer’s weekly routine.
“I don’t see it as work. I see it as
friends coming together and hanging out and talking about common
interests,” Couch says about her
role as a volunteer disk-jockey
on Saturday afternoons. When not
orchestrating music playlists, she
researches news stories to help
other volunteers with their radio
shows.
With a degree in journalism
and electronic media, the station
gives Couch an outlet to use her
gifts and interests. RFN also provides her with an outlet to put her
passions for news, music, and
technology to work.
“You may never realize the
impact you have on people,” said
Couch. Today, she hopes listeners
will want to give back after hearing her show.
Krystal Couch can be heard on
the radio every Saturday afternoon from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

The End of the Streetcar
Lines: Trolley Parks
At the end of the Glendale
and Fairfield streetcar lines,
were amusement parks. The
Nashville Railway and Light
Company, who were the owners
and operators of the city's streetcars, built a sixty-four acre
amusement park and zoo at the
end of the Glendale streetcar
line.
The park opened in 1888 to
attract passengers for the railway. Railway was the correct
term, because originally, the
streetcars were run by steam.
They became electric streetcars
in 1893. The Glendale Zoo was
added to the park in 1912.
Glendale Park was located
roughly around our present
Glendale Lane and Lealand Lane
areas. The present Lealand Lane
heading out from town was not a
street back then. It was where
the streetcar tracks were located.
The old Glendale streetcar
would go out to the park, make a
big rounding turn on the tracks,
and then head back to town.
Close to our present Glendale
Lane off of Leland Lane is where
the streetcar made its big turn.
In addition to some amusements and picnic facilities at the
park, a big attraction was the
Glendale Park Zoo.
Today, if we drive slowly
around the homes on Glendale
Lane, Scenic Drive, Tower Place,
Dale Avenue, and the surrounding area, we will be riding
around old Glendale Park.
Glendale Park closed in 1932. It
was the casualty of the advent of
automobiles and The Great
Depression.
During the hurtful days of
segregation, Greenwood Park
was built as a “trolley park” at
the end of the Fairfield streetcar
line in Nashville. Greenwood
Park opened in 1905 by Preston
Taylor, son of slave parents, who
became a successful businessman, religious leader, undertaker, philanthropist, and husband
of Georgia Gordon, one of the
original Fisk Jubilee singers.
Reverend Taylor was the founder
of Lea Avenue Christian
Church.
Reverend Preston
Taylor was a very distinguished
citizen in our area. The Preston
Taylor Homes on Clifton Avenue
were named for him.
Taylor
was
born
in
Shreveport, Louisiana in 1849.
Taylor came to Nashville in 1884
and purchased 37 acres of land
near “Buttermilk Ridge” at Elm
Hill Pike and Spence Lane. In
1888, Taylor established the second oldest cemetery for AfricanAmericans. The Greenwood
Cemetery still sits today off of
Elm Hill Pike. In 1905, Taylor
extended his real estate holdings
with the purchase of more than
37 acres near the corner of
Spence Lane and Lebanon Pike.
Taylor built his family home
there as well as the famous
Greenwood Park for AfricanAmerican citizens.
Preston Taylor's 40-acre private Greenwood Park was located near the intersection of Elm
Hill Pike and Spence Lane. The
entrance to the park was on
Lebanon Pike.
The park owned by Reverend
Preston Taylor was very elaborate with fountains, gardens,
clubhouse, theatre, skating rink,
roller coaster, merry-go-round,
shooting gallery, a swimming
pool, and a baseball diamond
(home of the Greenwood
Giants), among other things. W.
W.
Mishaw,
manager
of
Greenwood Park, scheduled
many good shows during the
summer for the citizens. The
Fourth of July was always a big
celebration day at Greenwood
Park.
The site was used as the annual “Black State Fair” as well as a
Boy Scout summer camp. The
park maintained a track and stables for the annual AfricanAmerican State Fair. The Fair
sometimes had 14,000 patrons in
one day.Taylor's horse-drawn
“pleasure wagons” met the electric streetcars at the GreenFairfield Street turn-around and
took customers to the Lebanon
Pike entrance.
There was no challenge to
Greenwood Park until the first
city-owned park for AfricanAmericans, Hadley Park, was
opened in July of 1912.
Reverend
Preston
Taylor died in the 1930's. For a
period of time, his widow
attempted
to
keep
the
Greenwood Park in operation,
but it was reported to be very dif-
Nashville ranked 95th among 200 cities in driverʼs report
Allstate Insurance Company
recently released its 12th
Annual Allstate America’s Best
Drivers Report®, which ranks
America’s 200 largest cities in
terms of collision frequency.
Nashville drivers rank dropped
12 spots to 95th safest city overall.
The release of this year’s
report coincides with the deadliest day on the road for drivers,
the Fourth of July, according to
the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety (IIHS). “As
Nashville drivers look forward
to celebrating the holiday weekend, the results of our report
are an important reminder to
put safety first on the road,”
said Tennessee agency owner,
Karen Teske. “We encourage
drivers in Nashville to refocus
on safe-driving practices, to
help reduce roadway collisions
that may result in unfortunate
consequences, such as tragic
fatalities and potentially higher
insurance costs.”
For the second straight year,
the report also provides insight
into braking habits in more
than 100 cities across the country. A hard braking event is
defined as slowing down eight
miles per hour or more over
a one-second time interval.
Allstate found a correlation
between hard braking and collision frequency. Cities with
higher collision frequency also
recorded more hard braking
events. It’s noted that Nashville
drivers performed better than
the national average.
The U.S. Department of
Transportation says that from
March 2015 to February 2016
there was an increase of more
than 3 percent in miles driven
over the previous 12 months,
leading to the largest year-toyear increase in over two
decades.
More than 38,000 roadway
fatalities occurred last year,
the highest count since 2008.
Preventable human factors,
like drunk, distracted or
drowsy driving; speeding; and
failure to use safety features
contribute to 94 percent of car
crashes.
This year, Brownsville, Texas,
came in at number one.

Matters
By Jim Wilson, CPA
One Very Important Concept
Last weekend, I found myself
home-bound with pneumonia.
Feeling completely useless, I
slumped down in my Lazy-boy
and watched the Daytona 400. I
rarely sit through a race from
beginning to end. I felt so miserable; I just sat there for the whole
show. But, even when you are
watching others perform and listen to the discussion of certain
aspects of the performance, you
can not avoid hearing one primary thread—Strategy. So what
is the strategy of racing? First,
you must prepare yourself to be a
race car driver. That may require
lots of training and actual handson activity. The next step involves
obtaining the right car with the
best qualities of safety and performance. The strategy of racing
can take two approaches: get in
front and stay in front or pace the
“pack” and wait for someone to
make a mistake. Someone will
always make a mistake. Then
move into a better position, by
carefully avoiding the crash.
Business Strategy is similar. I
know of no one who would
plunge into a business, buy inventory, rent or by office or storefront, without first preparing for
the venture. Many businesses fail
because the fail to plan. We offer
our clients a full-range of planning and forecasting using complex models of possible events. It
is impossible to assure anyone
that a business will be successful,
but careful planning and strategy
will educate the entrepreneur
and afford a better than average
course for success.
Modern business strategy
emerged as a field of study and
practice in the 1960’s; prior to that
time, the words "strategy" and
"competition" rarely appeared in
the most prominent management
literature. Alfred Chandler wrote
in 1962 that: "Strategy is the determination of the basic long-term
goals of an enterprise, and the
adoption of courses of action and
the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals."
Michael Porter defined strategy
in 1980 as the "...broad formula for
how a business is going to compete, what its goals should be, and
what policies will be needed to
carry out those goals" and the
"...combination of the ends
(goals) for which the firm is striving and the means (policies) by
which it is seeking to get there."
Henry Mintzberg described five
definitions of strategy in 1998:
•Strategy as plan – a directed
course of action to achieve an
intended set of goals; similar to
the strategic planning concept;
•Strategy as pattern – a consistent pattern of past behavior,
with a strategy realized over time
rather than planned or intended.
Where the realized pattern was
different from the intent, he
referred to the strategy as emergent;
•Strategy as position – locating
brands, products, or companies
within the market, based on the
conceptual framework of con-
sumers or other stakeholders; a
strategy determined primarily by
factors outside the firm;
•Strategy as ploy – a specific
maneuver intended to outwit a
competitor; and
•Strategy as perspective – executing strategy based on a "theory of the business" or natural
extension of the mindset or ideological perspective of the organization.[16]
Just as in racing, mistakes will
occur. There will be some choice
that was not well made. The
objective is to learn from mistakes made by others and avoid
the perils that often cause the
demise of the business. Do not
jump into your business without
a road map. We are here to assist
you with your Strategy.

$15,000 donation funds small-business education for local youth
Middle Tennessee’s youth
will be gaining further skills to
build and pitch a business,
thanks to a $15,000 donation
from the Phoenix Club of
Nashville to the youth-centric
organization, Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee.
The grant supports two
of Junior Achievement’s top
annual programs: the Nashville
Business Hall of Fame Dinner
and Shark Tank.
Each year, the Nashville
Business Hall of Fame Dinner
honors a Nashville icon who has
demonstrated business excellence, courageous thinking and
acting, inspired leadership, and
community mindedness. Recent
inductees include Amy Grant,
Jack Bovender, Rob McCabe,
Mark Emkes, Hal Pennington,
Ron Samuels and Joe Scarlett.
The Shark Tank program is a
play on the hit television program of the same name, with
high school students pitching
business ideas to “Sharks,” represented by Phoenix Club members. Winning teams leave with
cash investments to continue
their projects. The program is
an example of the creativity
that the Phoenix Club brings
to other nonprofits through its
‘venture philanthropy’ process.
The Phoenix Club has eagerly supported both programs for
the past few years, in recognition of Junior Achievement’s
platform for preparing students
for the real business world.
“We are so grateful to be able
to support local youth organizations in a meaningful way,” said
Justin Graham, President of
the Phoenix Club. “We love what
Junior Achievement does for
kids in Middle Tennessee and
we look forward to continuing
our strong partnership with
their organization.”

Green Hills explores roundabouts and infrastructure updates
David Smith
Staff Writer
After years of gathering input
from the community and planning to resolve traffic and pedestrian concerns, as well as determining the best options for an
outdated high school, the major
component — money —of moving forward is now in place.
Next year’s capital improvements budget includes $475 million for the Metro Council districts that encompass Green
Hills. The majority of those dollars will pay for construction for
the new Hillsboro High School,
which will be taken apart and
rebuilt in phases, as well as
improving the sidewalk in front
of the school.
Intersection configurations
are confusing, dangerous to
pedestrians and drivers and add
to traffic congestion at Hillsboro
Circle, Abbott Martin and
Warfield drives, and Whole Foods
and the YMCA. Possible solutions could include a round-
about.
“We want people to safely
cross the streets in places that
they can’t today,” said District 25
councilman Russ Pulley.
Drivers in Green Hills could
soon see Public Works employees
monitoring traffic and pedestrian conditions that will be
designed to create a safer environment for pedestrians.
Pulley said he has received
several calls from the retirement
community in Green Hills telling
stories of pedestrians almost
being hit by a motor vehicle or
knowing someone who was hit.
Early this year, a moving vehicle
at the crosswalk struck a resident
at the Retired Teachers building.
She died as a result of her
injuries.
“We need more education.
Operator error doesn’t mean a
crosswalk is designed poorly,”
said Benny Word, a Public Works
official, who is deeply involved in
intersection planning.
Improving pedestrian safety
requires changes, however small,
for both drivers and pedestrians.
For example, a “No Right Turn”
sign could return to the traffic
signal on Abbott Martin.
“There is a plethora of options
to make the roads safer for people,” said Pulley. “These options
include everything from painting
new lines and adding more visible driving directions to rethinking the four way-style intersections in favor of roundabouts.”
Updating or completely revising technology may be necessary
to accommodate an increasing
number of drivers, bicyclists,
mass transit services and pedestrians along city roads, especially
major corridors.
Traditionally, the goal of
using traffic light technology
was to ensure that lights would
not turn red just as cars are
approaching, or have a car waiting at a red light when no crosstraffic is going through the intersection.
Updates to the traffic lights in
Green Hills are part of a citywide
effort to update transit conditions as roads are repaved and
countdowns to pedestrian signals
are added, along with updates
made to traffic light technology.
But, given the size of the county,
each district has its own unique
set of issues that involve solutions far beyond well-timed light
changes. Like, Green Hills.
“Infrastructure along Hillsboro
Road is absolutely terrible,” said
Pulley, recently. However, one
side of the street is pulling ahead
from the other when it comes to
improvements, most notably
sidewalks that connect the major
economic anchor points along
Hillsboro Road, such as the grocery stores to the retail spots to
the bus stations.
The new high school is one
of several developments along
the east side of Hillsboro
Road encouraging connectivity
through new construction. The
sale of Best One Tire and the
subsequent summer thunder-
storm that knocked down the
back wall of the new building
during the construction phase
has given the new owners an
opportunity to move the building further back from the street
and create a wider sidewalk.
The Southern Land Company
will also be required to build a
new sidewalk.
Local officials highlight the
potential new construction
projects can have in contributing structural updates to nearby public space. However, looking toward the west side of the
street, where slower redevelopment is happening, Pulley and
others are hopeful that change
can happen with or without
new construction.
“I don’t think we can wait
for new development to begin
before we do something,” said
Pulley.

Red Cross issues emergency call for Donelson
residents to give blood
Due to hospital shortages,
the Red Cross has issued an
emergency call for blood and
platelet donations. According
to the Red Cross, blood donations over the past few months
have resulted in 39,000 fewer
donations.
Donors in Donelson can
donate blood on July 11, from
3 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Grace Church
of
the
Nazarene,
2620
Pennington
Bend
Road,
Donelson, TN 37214
Overall, blood donations
have fallen short of hospital
needs for the past few months,
resulting in about 39,000 fewer
donations than what’s needed,
as well as a significant draw
down of the overall Red Cross
blood supply. In addition, the
Independence Day holiday
may have caused many regular donors to postpone donations due to vacation plans. A
recent Red Cross poll revealed
that more than 75 percent of
donors surveyed indicated
vacation plans this summer,
many of them occurring the
weeks before and after July 4.
“Right now, blood products
are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are
coming in, which is why we
are making this emergency
request for donations,” said
Tiffany Taylor, external communications manager of the
Red Cross Tennessee Valley
Blood Services Region.

EBT Program is full of waste and abuse
I’m ticked off with the people who claim that the Food
Stamp Card program has a
slight amount of abuse. You
have to live in an alternative
universe to deny that this program is mostly a failure. God
Bless the people who need it
and use it to get a boost up until
they can do better, but conversely it is a SIN how many work
the system that us hard working citizens pay for.
My guess is that it has 30%
or 40% flagrant abuse, with
another 30% - 40% being marginal abuse. I have witnessed
countless times while in line
the ridiculous purchases made
by people using EBT Cards. I
have even waited while they
sort through all the stuff that
they can manage to charge on
the card, then pay for beer, cigarettes, expensive shampoo and
hair products with cash or
another form of credit. I have
witnessed the clerk having to
add things, then take them off,
and then the rude purchaser
push the stuff that wouldn’t
qualify to the side, never bothering to worry if it would go
bad sitting beside the checkout.
Sure, it’s easy to form a negative opinion , and conclude that
these types are drug using, lazy,

liars that “Game the System,”
and rest assured- most are, but
not all. The EBT program
began with a noble purpose, but
as most government run programs, it is full of waste, and
abuse now. Until the laid back,
lefties decide to remove many
of the unhealthy products from
qualifying it will most likely
continue to get worse as our
taxes skyrocket so we can further enable many people to
create an alternative to honest
work.
Let’s be honest and contact
our Representatives in an
attempt to curb the abuse; if we
do, there will be more money
available for those who truly
need the program.
Kroger, clean your
store and lot
Last month on Friday, June
CIGARS FROM
A. FUENTE, ASHTON, CAO, COHIBA,
DAVIDOFF, MONTECRISTO, PADRON,
TATUAJE, ZINO, & MANY MORE...
3rd at 11:45 am I pulled into the
Kroger store in Donelson. As I
pulled in I noticed all kinds of
trash all over the parking lot,
nothing new, I am sure we have
all noticed it before and just
not paid attention to it. As I
turned right and went past the
entrance I noticed the trash can
by the door was overflowing
and trash on the ground around
it, I also noticed three Kroger
employees sitting out on the
patio furniture that is for sale
smoking and having drinks, on
break I guess, but I thought that
really does not look good for the
store. I parked over by the
CVS and as I walked up to the
door I noticed five more Kroger
employees sitting at the picnic
table they have out there by the
front door smoking and talking,
but what really caught my eye
was the hundreds of cigarette
butts all over the ground by the
employee table. Now think of
this, how many other stores
that sell food or any business
for that matter have you seen
where their employee smoking
area is right at the front door
for every customer that goes
into the business to have to
walk by? None that I know of !
As I was walking into the store
one employee, Johnathan (I just
happened to see his name tag)
and a young lady (could not see
her name tag) got up from the
table and threw their cigarette
butts on the ground right by the
front door! The two employees
walked in the door right in
front of me and as I entered I
saw there was not one shopping
cart there inside the door, of
course not, they are all out all
over the parking lot! I headed
down to the other end of the
store to get a shopping cart and
the two employees that just
walked in ahead of me went
up to a register and started to
bag groceries for a customer.
Neither employee stopped to
wash their hands, use hand sanitizer or anything, they just finished smoking, eating and who
knows what else and now are
bagging and handling your
food! As I walked to the other
end of the store I see trash on
the floor inside the store, the

small trash can by self checkout is overflowing on to the
floor, there is a soda can on the
floor by the Coinstar machine,
receipts litter the floor, one
cashier is standing there texting while the guy waiting to
check out stands there looking
at her. At that point it crosses
my mind, if the store is this
dirty where the customers can
see it what it is like in the back
of the store where the food is
kept?? If Kroger is going to let
the front of the store look this
bad do you really think they
care what happens in the back
with your food? Can you imagine what the employee restrooms look like if the store and
the break area looks like this??
I turn and walked back the way
I came in and decide that I
would feel a whole lot better
shopping someplace else! As I
walk by the "Customer Service"
desk I stop to tell the young lady
behind the counter that "there
is not one shopping cart at the
entrance door" to which her
reply is "What? Oh, okay." I got
in my car, and headed over to
Publix basically across the
street. As I pulled in I notice the
lot is clean, there are a few carts
in the lot but they are all in the
stands for them and not all over
the place. As I walked toward
the front door a young man who
works at Publix is helping a
woman out with her groceries
but still says "hello" to me as he
walks by, as I walk in the store
another employee happens to
walk by and she also says
"hello" to me. Both employees
were neat, clean shirts and
pants and well groomed, very
different than any employee I
just saw in Kroger! As I am
shopping three other Publix
employees said "hello" and two
ask "if I needed help in finding
anything". As I went to check
out there were more than
enough opened check out lanes
and all the self check out lanes
were working as well. I am
greeted nicely by the cashier,
and ask if I found everything I
was looking for, the young man
bags my groceries with care,
not piling everything in to one
bag and then ask me if I need
help out with them, I only had
two bags so I politely decline
his offer. Way different then
about two months ago when
and elderly woman checking
out in front of me at Kroger ask
the young man bagging if he
"could help her out wit her
bags" and he told her "We don't
do that here!" I told her to let me
get my stuff paid for and I
would help her with her bags
and I did. I called back to the
Kroger store right after that

happened but never heard
back from anyone about it.
Just like then I called Kroger
but the corporate office this
time about what just happened
on Friday as soon as I got
home, yes, I called, I did not
send an email. After getting
passed to four different people
I spoke to a woman who
seemed like she cared about
what I was saying but defended
the smoking area in front of
the store for some reason? She
promised me that I would hear
from someone from the Kroger
store or someone from the
Kroger corporate office "before
the end of the business day!"
Guess what, no surprise I
never heard from anyone! This
was not my first trip to this
Publix, but this trip was the
eye opener that told me I will
never shop in Kroger again
and made me realize just how
much cleaner, better run, better staffed, and polite the
employees are at Publix. I am
not saying they are perfect, but
at least I did not have to wade
through trash, search for a
cart and wonder if their
employees washed their hands
before bagging my groceries!
Clean up your act and the rest
of the store, Kroger, and you
need to do it fast!
Volunteers, pay attention
I have a bit of information
for all of the candidates and
their volunteer workers. When
you step onto a condominium
or gated property make sure
you check to see if there just
happens to be a NO TRESPASSING and/or NO SOLICITING sign posted at the entrance because if there is then
you are illegally on that property and are subject to
arrest/prosecution. So, in closing, to the candidates before
you get your little flunkie volunteers to go door to door
make sure they are all literate
and understand exactly what
the words NO TRESPASSING
and NO SOLICITING mean.
They mean just that!
Iʼm doing nothing
wrong
I was just going to chalk
this up to arrogance gone ugly,
but you know what, I’m ticked
off. And maybe it’s the heat
getting to me.
I’m taking a summer sabbatical with two goals in mind.
One is to write doctrine for a
new ministry – Isaiah-49.org,
and second, to heat condition
myself for the missions work
we have planned, which means
I have to spend a lot of time
sweating in the summer heat. I
live about an hour outside of
the city, but our project
requires me to be in Nashville,
so I found the perfect daytime
spot for the ministry RV.
Since I’ve been parking at
the corner of 8th Ave South
and Benton, let’s just say that
I’ve gotten a less than friendly
introduction to the neighborhood, most notably from a few
that I share the corner with.
They’ve done everything in
their power to make me leave!
From direct harassment by the
property owners in that they
assume I am “homeless and
living on the street.” I’ve told
them plainly that I am here
working on a project. They
have called the police, to no
avail because I’m not doing
anything wrong. They even
called Metro Codes, also to no
avail, because I’m not doing
anything wrong!
And the more I think about
it, the more indignant I
become, not for myself since I
am uniquely equipped to handle the likes of them, but for
the community that I serve —
the less fortunate among us.
I get it, you think I’m homeless, and you snicker and
scowl at what you perceive to
be someone’s misfortune. How
dare you! How dare you have
the audacity to look down your
nose at… anyone! Who do you
think you are? Well, I can tell
you really fast who you
aren’t… and God will, too.
You might want to open that
dusty Bible of yours, provided
you own one, and see what He
says He’s going to do to the
haughty and the proud. And
while you’re at it, you might
want to ask a Christian what
Jesus said about *what you do
to the least of these. I refuse to
believe that a true Christian
would treat another human
being the way you have acted
towards me.
So in closing, to all you
haughty and proud ones, if
you’re fool enough to keep
looking down that nose of
yours… well, all I can say is,
“Good luck with that.”
Drive with your dogs
in the backseat
This is my gripe. It is being
addressed to all of you morons
that drive around with your
dog in your lap. Do you not
realize how dangerous that
can be? It is as bad as someone
talking/texting on their phone. It
is another form of distracted
driving. If you are that insecure you need help some very
serious help. If you feel your
pet has to ride with you confine it to the back seat in a carrier or by a barrier to keep it
from coming to the front seat.
Before you go and fire off your
rebuttal towards me I am a pet
owner and I will go even further to say I am a responsible
pet owner. My dog rides in the
back seat with absolutely no
access to the front.

The Whitland 4th of July Patriots Party was hosted by Jay
Weiss and Mary Barbee at their home for patrons of the
Whitland Avenue 4th of July celebration.
Funds raised by the attendees pay for the costs of staging the
Independence Day event, which is attended by hundreds of people.
This is the 39th year of the annual fun-filled family celebration, which involves a patriotic program with a speaker, a musical presentation, and a family-style picnic with everyone contributing potluck dishes.
The patron food was catered by Fatoush Cafe, a Middle
Eastern restaurant on Charlotte Avenue. Everyone enjoyed
hummus, pita bread, grilled chicken and beef, tabouleh, Greek
salad, and baclava for dessert.
The party was outdoors and, luckily, not until right after
everyone finished dessert did the rain start to pour.
Tables were covered with assorted cloths and decorations
included white and green hydrangeas and small American flags.
Guests included: Bruce Dobie, Lynn McDonald, Nan Parrish,
Dianne Neal, Nancy Hearn, Ann and Owen Kelly, Jim and
Martha Cooper, Steve Dickerson, and Tim and Maggie Corbin.
