A Tribute to a King.
In honor of Yomo Toro, I had the privilege of presenting to
Denise Toro, a portrait of her father floating over the beach
of Rincon, Puerto Rico and playing his cuatro. The event was
held at the world famous Copacabana. The tribute, directed by
Aurora Flores and Zon del Barrio, also included guest performers,
politicians and salsa legends. Goya Foods sponsored the
historic night delighted with the enormous amount of salseros
that participated in the Parranda. The festivities were lead by
Zon del Barrio and the famous folkloric group Danza Fiesta.
As the crowd danced the night away, we were grateful to share
the stage with legendary musicians Larry Harlow, Alfredo de
la Fe, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, and Reinaldo Jorge.
It was truly a night to remember.
On October 11th, 2012 Oliver Rios and AIG Latino Network ERG honored Jacqueline Lopez for Hispanic Heritage Month, with a photography exhibit showcasing her
triumphant victory against breast cancer. The photos depicted joyous occasions of Miss Lopezs support team, her family. Jackie was very grateful to be recognized
with such a meaningful event. Attendees were the members of the Lopez family, AIG Latino Network ERG, Peggy Morales (District Leader 68th AD Part B,
State Committee Woman 68th AD), Aurora Flores, (Zon Del Barrio), Yesenia Morillo-Gual (President & Founder, Proud To Be Latina), Photographer Carmen Rubio,
Elizabeth Zapata, (Scholastic) and Andre Rivera (Social Empire NYC).
I would like to thank Orios Designs for a great exhibit. By all accounts it
was a success. Besides the personal conversations I had with attendees,
I over heard several more conversations regarding how Breast Cancer has
touched people’s lives. Your experience and professionalism were integral
in making this collaborative effort a success. We look forward to working
with you on future projects.
Gratefully,

In 2011 a mammogram result changed Jackie Lopez’s life.... She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, had a Bilateral Mastectomy in October of 2011, and
radiation. All of these steps were sad, difficult, and uncertain, but because of her families love and support the journey was made easier, especially with the
help of her daughter Carol. Carol has over 15 years of serving the community and assisting patients at the John Theurer Cancer Center.”What a beautiful
blessing for a mother to have”. Says Jackie, “Latin women are guerreras (warriors) from beginning to the end, look at your grandmother, mother, sister, cousin,
aunt, friends, and especially your daughters”

Jacqueline Lopez
born Jacqueline Canales to Osvaldo Gustavo Canales and
Irma Yolanda Valencia in Valparaiso, Chile 1957. At the
age of 9 her father was tragically killed in a car crash and
her mother had to work very hard to support them both.
Irma sent Jackie to the best school she could afford, a
catholic boarding school run by nuns. The summer she
turned 15, Jacqueline traveled to visit her mother who
was in the United States for a few months working in a
factory. It was that year that she met Angel Lopez , a
young man from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jackie and
Angel married and started a family. Although Irma
wanted Jackie to continue her education, Jackie was in
love and was determined to make the marriage work.
Jackie and Angel had four children, Carol, Angel, Alexa
and Sylvana. It was a struggle during a bad economy to
make it, but that did not stop them, it motivated them.
Jackie learned to speak, read and write english and
obtained her GED. She lovingly stayed at home to raise
her children and Angel worked in Auto body Repair with
a third grade education. Jackie obtained her Real Estate
license and received the “Rookie of the year” award
for most sales. They had accomplished the american
dream. They owned their home and their cars. They
both had respectable employment. All of the children
attended the best schools they could afford. Angel and
Jackie encouraged their children to seek advancement
through education and taught them to be respectful
to themselves and to others. Their oldest daughter,
Carol Rios RN, BSN, OCN, CBPN-IC, CBCN is an Oncology
Nurse Navigator for patients with Breast Cancer. She
was recognized as one of El Diario La Prensa’s 2012
Mujeres Destacadas (Distinguished Woman) for her
work in oncology. She is currently enrolled in the nurse
practitioner program at UMDNJ and is a member of the
Oncology Nursing Society . She is married to Oliver
Rios who is of Puerto Rican descent, and has three
children Alyson, Gabriel and Isabella, 16, 4 and 3 years
old. Their son, Angel Lopez, is a Navy combat veteran of
Operation Iraqi Freedom for the United States Navy and
most recently a graduate of the Belleville Fire Academy.
He was awarded the Merit award by his peers in his
graduating class, an honorable recognition of his loyalty
and commitment to teamwork. He realized his dream
of becoming a firefighter. He is married to Riah, who is
Trinidadian and has three beautiful children, Emilee, 17,
Raquel, 4, and Ravi 2. Their daughter, Alexa Albert earned
her Bachelors degree from Ramapo College and worked
for the ARC of NJ prior to getting married and starting her
family with Juan Albert, who’s roots are from Colombia
and Puerto Rico. She’s dedicated to raising her two
sweet boys, Diego, 6 and Javi, 4. Sylvana Lai, RN, BSN,
CRN, Their youngest daughter, works with couples facing
infertility and supports them through the process.
She has taken some courses towards her MBA. She is
married to Dave Lai who is also an RN has roots from
Ireland and China. They are proud parents of their son
Shane, 2. Angel and Jackie are both very proud of all of
their children’s achievements. Jackie is the root and her
children and grandchildren are the branches.

friends, and especially your daughters.
La Bruja Project
See What I Mean at El Taller Boricua.
2011
The La Bruja Project is a series of artistic portraits designed by Oliver Rios, based on and inspired by the poetic works of La Bruja. Each artistic
masterpiece is a perfect union of both visual and lyrical imagery, leaving an indelible mark in the contemporary Latino American culture.
Bringing together visual artists and Nuyorican poets, the exhibition explores the elastic nature of verbal and visual language. Relationships
between how we see and the way we describe the world around us are malleable and intrinsically connected. Within this discourse, the ongoing
contributions and legacy of the Nuyorican poets offer important insight. (Re)inventors of the vernacular, they continually encompass other art
mediums and expand the boundaries between that which is seen, said and experienced in culture.
Together with visual artists whose work also exists in a realm between expression and perception, the exhibition fosters an expansive dialogue
on familiar socio-political realities and constructs of everyday life such as: identity, economics, interpersonal relationships, public media and
government practices. Incorporating sound, installation, video, drawing, collage, found objects as well as digital and traditional print making, “See
What I Mean” offers a look beyond the surface of words and images to reveal deeper understandings.

Orios Designs was proud to be a part of Paint it Pink this
year. Thanks to Loris Crawford of Art off the Main and
Khadijah “Vibes” Carter of Paint it Pink. This gala contained
cocktails and hors d’oeuvres that serves amidst some of
the finest works of art being produced by artists of African,
Caribbean and Latin American ancestry was a wonderful
experience. The event was held at the famous Puck
Building in Soho. The night was hosted by on air personality
and writer Raqiyah Mays of Hot 97 and 98.7 Kiss FM.
There was live entertainment by advocate and breast
cancer survivor Khadijah “Vibes” Carter. Exquisite art
was being sold by artists. Curators, professionals and
other art lovers were mingling and helping to raise funds
for breast cancer awareness and advocacy. The night was
inspirational to say the least. Unfortunately, we all know someone
affected by breast cancer but that only encourages us to do
something to support the cause. Orios Designs was proud to
contribute a piece titled “Survivors” that was auctioned off,
with some of the proceeds going to The Young Survival
