Ambassadors
of Peace and
Friendship
Medford, Oregon and Alba , Italy have been Sister
Cities since 1960. President Eisenhower’s “People
to People” program was created to promote
international goodwill and to counteract the
anti-goodwill and counteract the anti-American
sentiment that was growing throughout the world
in the late fifties. Medford’s choice of international
partners was based upon the similarities of the
two cities and not on opportunities for commerce.
The unique relationship has been built upon close
personal friendships and thrives after four decades
of global turmoil because it is truly a program
that unites people. The student exchanges
did not begin until 1985, but they have since
become the basis for an ever widening circle
of friends in both cities. This year’s ambassadors
are continuing a tradition of exchanges that
now spans generations. In a world where peace
and understanding are in great peril, this year’s
exchange has an even greater importance and
you are making it possible. Thank you for supporting
this year’s mission of peace and friendship.
