Conference Application Honoring a Pioneer - Gary Vollan Gary Vollan could be named one of the most active and hardest working advocates for the denturist profession as well as “father of the year” extraordinaire. These two areas do not seem to have a lot in common except that they both require enormous energy and dedication; however, if you add in this mix full-time college student then you really must wonder can this person be for real? But he is for real and that is what makes him very unique and exceptional. After having already graduated from the Seattle Central Community College, Oregon Denturist College, the Idaho State University Denturist’s program and George Brown College he will soon receive a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Wyoming. He has dedicated countless hours working with the Wyoming legislators seeking recognition and licensure for Wyoming denturists. In this effort he was responsible for gathering thousands of citizen’s signatures for a ballot initiative; this work was only halted by the death of his father whom he had been caring for during a prolonged illness. This initiative project and legislative activity is again in the making. He is a licensed denturist and is presently working in a large clinic in Basin, WY. His ultimate goal is to help see licensed denturists in every state so citizens everywhere can have a choice in their oral prosthetic provider. But unquestionably the role that puts him at the top of the list of exceptional individuals is his family. Gary is a single parent of nine adopted children and countless foster children. This heart-warming story begins almost 20 years ago when the Washington Department of Human Services needed a home for a five-year-old child. Gary took this child into his heart and home and the rest is history. He considers his children ranging in ages 11-37 a blessing and the greatest blessing of all -- he now has 5 grandchildren. As someone who has been involved in the denturist profession for years, I wrote an article using this title a few years ago hoping to inspire denturists to realize their unique talent and present themselves to the public as the professionals they really are. Many denturists are humble individuals who really do not appreciate their own talents. Recent occurrences in the profession have stimulated a new article with the same title. The phrase that titles this article is arguably one of the most famous phrases being quoted or remembered. Most of us are familiar with this phrase since it was enthusiastically proclaimed by our 35th President John F. Kennedy in his 1961 presidential inaugural speech and recorded in history. This phrase continues to encourage us all to be positive and to be part of the industry and success of our nation. It aroused patriotism that is felt even today. However, you may not know that this part of JFK’s inaugural address was not original but a paraphrase; this was not the first time this phrase had been spoken. The original quote was written by the Lebanese poet/writer/artist Khalid Gibran in his 1925 book “The New Frontier.” Writing to encourage his fellow citizens of Mount Lebanon to fight for independence from Ottoman rule he admonished, “Are you…asking what your country can do for you or…are you…a zealous one asking what you can do for your country?” This enduring admonishment is certainly provoking and can be addressed to anyone devoted to a cause…and what better cause than that of the denturists? The professional denturist is dedicated to serve and is the only professional legislated “exclusively” to serve individuals with removable dental prosthetics. A denturist’s entire required curriculum of study and training focuses on the oral health of those individuals needing a dental prosthetic and the actual fabrication of that appliance. This is especially poignant considering many state legislators refuse to recognize this professional or severely limit the scope of practice for which the professional denturist has dedicated years of training and education in order to serve. NEWS AND NOTES Around the U.S.: Congratulations are in order: Congratulations to Sam Whisenant for receiving the 2011 Distinguished President’s Award. On the lighter side congratulations are sent to the outstanding bowlers who participated in the bowling tournament during our fall conference in Las Vegas. Jan Rosenberger, from Yakima, WA, earned the winner’s trophy for being the best all around bowler. Tad Burzynski, from Bend, OR, won the gold medal, Carlo Zanon, Ontario, Canada won the silver and Monica Berninghaus, Silverdale, WA, won the bronze. A fun time was had by all! Congratulations to Paul Levasseur for being re-elected as a member of the Executive Board for the International Federation of Denturist. Elections were recently held during the IFD 2011 Annual Meeting in Amsterdam, Holland. Congratulation and many kudos should be sent to the professional denturists and their leadership team in Oregon for their success in winning legislation which allows a broader scope of practice for all of Oregon denturists. This enviable position allows Oregon denturists to provide their patients with any removable dental prosthetic that is non orthodontic. Oregon State Denturist Association April 20 – 21, 2012 Florence, Oregon www.ordenturist.org International Happenings: The International Federation of Denturists (IFD) met recently in Amsterdam for their 2011 Annual Meeting. Nine of the 19 member countries were represented; reports from representatives of those countries not attending were given via conference call or proxy. The IFD represents over 4,000 denturists worldwide and is a strong advocate for the profession and is pleased to report that 7 countries have full recognition: The Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Denmark, and the Republic of Ireland. Some countries, like the United States, even though fully recognized in some states, are working hard to achieve that right nationally. Denturists world-wide are working diligently increasing their education to prove their competence and dedication to the profession in order to help provide the oral health needs of their citizens. Denturists are working independently without a problem in some non-legislated countries. Denturists in other countries remain completely underground. Denturists in Hungary have recently taken competency examinations and been recognized by the government; however, the dental board controls licensure and have refused to issue licenses to the denturists. The challenges are diverse yet great efforts continue believing that one breakthrough will cause a domino effect throughout Europe and create a global change. Everyone is encouraged to enjoy the updates being fed into the new website by Jan and Andrew Taylor. They are doing an excellent job keeping the website up to date with lots of new information. NDA members wanting to link your website to the affiliates map please e-mail your request and information to: [email protected] The two-day meeting featured spirited enthusiastic discussions and exciting progressive plans were set to motion. Tad Burzynski, president of the National Denturist Associationrepresented the U.S. Paul Levasseur, licensed denturist in Maine, was re-elected to sit on the Executive Board as the Vice President of North American. The IFD board is pleased to announce that the 9th World Symposium on Denturism will be held in the United States in the fall of 2015. Box 2344 Poulsbo, WA 98370 DOMx Revolutionary practice management software for denturists [email protected] | 1.855.494.0057 SPOTLIGHT Ron and Grant Olson, Westpark Denture Clinic R on and LaVonne Olson, married only a few short years and with a new baby were doing okay, but Ron, working as a dental laboratory technician was not really satisfied. He was “itchy” because he knew he could do a better job for people needing dentures if he could see the individual himself rather than having to work from a prescription to build an appliance for someone he had never seen. He had a good working relationship with the dentists he worked with, but he knew he could do better. When he heard about a group of men in Montana trying to organize areferendum in order to pass a bill that would regulate and license denturist he was intrigued. He asked LaVonne and she said the absolute right thing, “Go for it.” So Ron joined ten other technicians and went to work to get enough citizen signatures so the issue could be placed on the ballot for a vote; this required thousands of signatures and the work was very difficult, expensive and time consuming. Homes were mortgaged, insurance policies cashed in, but they collected enough money and signatures; it went on the ballot for a vote. Ron tells the story about how on the night of the election they all sat around the television watching the results and were very disappointed to see that the issue had been defeated. He and LaVonne retired for the evening despondent that all their hard work had been in vain, but as devout Christians they believed that God was in control and their not winning was for a reason. It was not until the next morning that they realized they stopped watching the returns too soon, because the eastern part of the state had not been counted. The initiative had passed handedly. Even though Ron had a good relationship with the dentists he had worked with, he laughingly says you could hear the dentists groan all over the little town of Lewiston, MT. They thought dentistry had been set back 100 years; however, time and the talents of those 11 denturists have proven them wrong. Ron and LaVonne were nervous about their new adventure. They had no money; they had used everything on the initiative, but they had an unwavering faith that God would care for them, and He has. Ron went on to have a successful denturist practice and ultimately was appointed by the Governor to sit on the State Board of Dentistry. This was an honor and the business was rewarding, but they would both agree that their best gift of God’s blessing is their children. They eventually had 4 children; 3 daughters and a son. Montana now has many more denturists, including their son Grant. This delights Ron; who is now retired and able to spend more time at the ranch he and LaVonne purchased as a retreat. He enjoys game hunting; birds, deer, and elk and the ranch is the perfect place for the family to enjoy special occasions or just restful visits. Since they now have 15 grandchildren (4 are adopted), they have had to build a couple more cabins on the ranch to accommodate them all for their family get togethers. Grant is following in his father’s footsteps; and loves it; he knew when he started working for his Dad that this was what he wanted to do. He now owns the business and Ron only works 4 to 5 days a month. Some of Ron’s patients from years past refuse to let him completely retire. Grant started his unofficial training when as a high school student he would work in his father’s laboratory after school. From the start he Accoring to the Olsons, a large part of the success of WP Denture Clinic certainly goes to Glynda, our Receptionist, and ourtechnicians Jim and Fred. 12 loved the work and especially enjoyed meeting the elderly patients and listening to their stories. Grant is proud to say he believes he has an aptitude for it especially since it seems to be a family tradition. Ron’s father was a dental laboratory technician. Grant started his denturist education by earning a certificate from The Indian Tribal Denturist Association and serving on the Fort Pech Indian Reservation. He continued his education and is a graduate of the Oregon Denturist College and George Brown College. He holds a denturist license in Oregon and Montana. He is active in the Montana Denturist Association and is a strong advocate for denturist education. Grant met his wife while they were both in their first year of college and after 18 years of marriage and five children Grant says, “She is far and away the most wonderful girl ever.” The Olsons certainly prove that the family that prays and plays together stays together. The entire family, Ron and LaVonne, their eight children (they claim the spouses as theirs now) and their 15 grandchildren gather whenever they can and most every holiday at their ranch to enjoy family and the blessings God has so generously given them. We are proud to spotlight Ron and Grant Olson. Ron is certainly a pioneer in his field and has passed this respecton, not only to his son but to others who have been inspired to enter the denturist profession. Ron’s professional dignity and integrity has gained respect from his patients, his community and other professionals who wereprivileged to know or work with him. Grant is definitely following in this father’s footsteps. The practice continues to grow and he has recently purchased an office building and completely remodeled and furnished it to accommodate the needs of his denturist practice. So the spotlight shines on Ron and Grant Olson for their integrity, industry and success; congratulations to them both. Other sizes & volume pricing available upon request. Manufacturers Of Fine Chemicals and Ceramics for Over 35 Years www.americandentalsupply.net Continued from page 9 There is a unique dedication within this profession that few people would be willing to make; however hundreds of men and women all over the United States make this sacrifice every day. This fight for recognition and regulation is ongoing and has not come easily. A perfect example is that of Ben Sweet from Ontario, Canada, when a half century ago, he refused to agree to close his denturist practice as a requirement to be released from jail after having been arrested for serving patients. As a result Canadian denturists rallied and citizens were outraged and you may say, “The rest is history.” Denturists practic independently in every province of Canada today. JFK’s Gibranian cry could certainly be attributed to Mr. Sweet. That cry was heard in Washington State almost 20 years ago when 11 dedicated denturists mortgaged their homes, sold cars and boats in order to win their right to serve their citizens; in Maine when denturists there were willing to jump through political hoops to attain their recognition. Every regulated state has its story of struggle, sacrifice and progress and as we learn from history, those states that continue to aspire to that cry in a spirit of brotherhood are progressing. A positive example of this progress is Oregon. These dedicated denturists have continued to prove and improve their profession by encouraging professionalism among their ranks, providing quality service to the public and cooperating together in a spirit of camaraderie with selfless dedication to the group. By so doing they have exalted the profession and everyone is benefitting. The scope of practice for denturists in Oregon has been recently expanded and is now the broadest of any regulated state. Every denturist has opportunity to serve the prosthetic needs of many more citizens and the citizens can reap the benefit by having a choice in their provider. This is a beautiful lesson we all must learn as we evaluate our efforts. We must look at our progress, or lack of, and learn. There is strength in numbers and there is absolutely no retreat when those numbers are “glued” in a spirit of brotherhood dedicated to a cause. Our profession is one that serves and every individual should have the right to choose that service. Ours is a noble cause; it deserves no less than our selfless dedication. So if you are not progressing as you wish, what to do? Heed the Gibranian cry; rally to the cause and be part of this unique camaraderie. Join your professional organization. Attend conferences, volunteer for committee activities and offer financial support both in membership dues, fees and donations. Participate in the organization’s political activities.Your professional organization reflects you; it speaks of the quality of your profession. If it is not what you want it to be then remember Kennedy’s words…”ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Get involved; inspire brotherhood. Our cause is noble; our cause is right. 14 Exclusive offer for NDA Members 855...DENTURIST Clever and Catchy Easy to remember It’s cost-effective Easy to use Includes call reporting Uses direct connection Everyone nationwide would know they could find a Denturist simply by calling 855...DENTURIST 1.
