InTouch SPRING 2014 A publication for the many friends and supporters of ChildServe Part of the Team Will Joins in Through Sports This past fall, the Dallas Center-Grimes football team was facing a challenging opponent for the district title. Will, who recently graduated from outpatient therapy at ChildServe, was there—but not in the stands. He was on the field, cheering on his team as honorary captain. Will, a senior at Dallas Center-Grimes, was named honorary captain after team members gave a compelling story to the coach about how he was a source of inspiration. Will and his parents had been setting goals for Will to socialize more, so being named honorary captain was a fantastic accomplishment. “High school is a big transition for students, and at Dallas Center-Grimes we have experienced situations where the students are looking out for what is best for others,” Will’s mom says. “The boys on the football team showed a lot of character by asking and advocating for Will to be the honorary captain.” In addition to being the honorary captain for the football team, Will has also been giving the varsity girl’s basketball team high-fives before their games for the past three years. No matter the score, he is there cheering until the last minute. Will has had a lot of players on his team—family, friends, classmates and ChildServe staff members. With their support, he has been thinking about his future. Moving forward, he hopes to volunteer or work in the sporting industry. Will was honorary captain of Dallas Center-Grimes’ football team his senior year. + Look inside to find more stories and your name in our donor list A Friendship That Rocks Table of Contents 3 Kim Has a Blast Seeing Taylor Swift A Memorable Experience Made Possible by a Thoughtful Donor A Connection Created Through ChildServe’s Supported Community Living Program Kolby participates in ChildServe’s Supported Community Living program. Kim Has a Blast Seeing Taylor Swift A Memorable Experience Made Possible by a Thoughtful Donor Kim is a typical 17-year-old. She goes to the mall, attends high school sporting events, listens to music, enjoys the YMCA, spends time on her cellphone and iPod, and is very sociable. And like any other teenager, Kim is working to complete her senior year of high school. Thankfully, in August, Kim was able Kim saved her tickets and confetti to take a break from schoolwork and to put on her wall. enjoy a fun and memorable night at the Taylor Swift concert with Tasha, shift supervisor at Kim’s group home. Kim and Tasha’s seats were very close to one of the stages. Taylor went through a number of outfits, and Kim was very impressed at how fast she was able to change from one piece to the next. She was also amazed when Taylor went on the lift right above the crowd. As the concert was ending, large confetti blowers blew heart- “When she was grabbing for the confetti she was smiling so big and giggling. I had never seen her that excited before.” —Tasha, shift supervisor at Kim’s group home shaped confetti at the fans. Kim One Couple’s Story: Don’t Wait Another Day Each year, Tom and Mary volunteered their time at ChildServe and provided donations. They became even more involved once they entered retirement. When Tom died, Mary spoke with us about how much he had enjoyed volunteering and that he had always wanted to make a substantial gift but never found the time to update his will. Festivities will begin at 7 p.m. and include cocktails, dinner and a runway fashion show inspired by bubble wrap. All designers are local artists. ChildServe’s Bubble Ball is a fun and innovative event unlike anything else in our community, and this year’s movie theme is sure to be a box office hit! We encourage everyone to come have a ball, enjoying an evening with members of the central Iowa community while supporting a great cause. The goal of this year’s Bubble Ball is to raise $100,000 that will be used to purchase property where two new group homes will be built. The children and young adults are provided a homelike, yet structured living environment where skill acquisition and independence is encouraged through interactions with caring direct support professionals. The homes are for children who require nursing care, skill development, behavior support and therapies. « The Brazilian 2wins « Rosalie Gallagher and Soozie McBroom « Guests at the 2013 Bubble Ball Tickets are on sale at www.childserve.org/bubbleball « Circus magician by Hill Vintage 4 • InTouch MARCH 2014 You’re Invited! But all who choose to give have one common theme—they want to support ChildServe’s mission of partnering with families to help children with special health care needs live a great life! “Watching the children in action inspires me to continue aiding families by making gifts to help with their children’s care,” says Ron, who has made donations to ChildServe uninterruptedly for the past 29 years. “I know where my money is going when I give—the organization is local and it’s an investment in the community.” Larry, another longtime donor, began giving when his daughter, Cheryl Lynn, passed away. Cheryl Lynn had a friend who volunteered at ChildServe, and her friend’s involvement moved her to help as well. Cheryl Lynn was very passionate about the children served at ChildServe, so Larry began giving 27 years ago as a way to keep her memory alive. “I know where my money is going when I give—the organization is local and it’s an investment in the community.” —Ron, longtime donor What’s Your Story?
