Bulletin Occupational therapists improve the lives of Mercy patients one at a time Everyday activities — such as getting dressed, preparing a meal or even talking on the phone — are often taken for granted; however, for patients who have been impacted by cognitive or physical impairments, injury or surgery, those skills can be challenging. By considering each individual’s psychological, physical, emotional and social makeup, Mercy’s occupational therapists help patients identify goals and adapt their life skills — including selfcare (feeding, grooming and dressing), homemaking/home management, vocational/occupational skills and leisure time activities — to live as fully and independently as possible One treatment method that is commonly used is the Cognitive Performance Test (CPT). Originally designed to evaluate Alzheimer’s patients, the CPT is a standardized, performance-based assessment that uses tasks related to seven common activities of daily living to measure patients’ functional ability. The CPT can also help family members determine if additional supervision or assistance are needed for a loved one suffering from cognitive issues. April is National Occupational Therapy Month. For more information about Mercy’s occupational therapy services, please visit www.mercydesmoines.org/ InpatientRehabServices/index.cfm. APRIL 2, 2010 Mercy partners with explorer Charlie Wittmack to deliver global health and educational initiatives When Charlie Wittmack, the first Iowan to climb Mount Everest, embarks on an unprecedented, 12,000-mile, intercontinental triathlon – The World Tri (TWT) – on Sunday, July 11, 2010, he will have the support of the Mercy Family. Charlie’s adventurous challenge will take him from the frigid waters of the English Channel to the snow-covered summit of Mount Everest in only 11 months’ time, drawing to completion on June 11, 2011. Charlie recently announced his journey on Tuesday, March 30, during a news conference. While TWT is an unparalleled test of physical endurance, its purpose extends far beyond completing the journey. Charlie and his team will be fulfilling global health and educational initiatives that originate in Des Moines, including a maternal health program in Nepal as a way of giving back to the Sherpas who saved his life, as well as preparing interactive curriculum for K-12 classrooms in the United States. Charlie’s year-long endurance feat will cross some of the most rugged mountain ranges and treacherous deserts in the world. Personal physical and mental challenges are not foreign territory for Charlie. In 2003, he reached the summit of Mount Everest after making two backto-back attempts without food or water during some of the worst weather in the recorded history of the mountain. Charlie will travel with a team including his wife, Cate, and their two-year-old son, James. “Mercy is pleased and excited to partner with Charlie Wittmack, who has demonstrated an exceptional personal Charlie Wittmack, a world-class explorer, lecturer and attorney, will be embarking on an unprecedented, 12,000-mile, intercontinental triathlon on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Mercy has partnered with Charlie and his TWT team to help bring light to global health and educational initiatives. commitment to physical and mental achievement, in addition to his desire to help others reach their personal goals for improved fitness and healthier lifestyles,” says Joe LeValley, senior vice president of Planning and Advocacy for Mercy. “Charlie’s personal quest should be an inspiration to everyone as we strive to create a healthier community.” Mercy Family members will have an opportunity to support Charlie and his team by participating in programs and initiatives at Mercy. Additional information will be announced in upcoming Bulletin issues. For more information regarding TWT, please visit www.theworldtri.com. Mercy’s Patient Access employees serve as goodwill ambassadors to patients, families and visitors At one point or another, every department at Mercy comes in contact with the public. With that contact comes the opportunity to present a positive image to our community. The Patient Access Department is most often responsible for providing patients and visitors with their first impressions of our hospital. “We work very hard on guest relations,” says Patient Access Manager Bridgett Bickford. “Patients and families coming into our hospital are often in a stressful situation. Our job is to ease their concerns in a caring and efficient manner.” In an average day, the Patient Access Department handles a variety of requests from many persons including physicians, nurses and patients. Physicians call to schedule patients for admission and nurses call to schedule outpatient tests. The Patient Access Department staff must also be familiar with the procedures and guidelines of various insurance companies. During the access process, patients sometimes are feeling apprehensive and need support. “When people aren’t feeling well, we need to be fast, accurate and above all, friendly,” Patient Access staff member, Lolita Windsor, noted. “If we don’t do our job right, the problems reverberate throughout the hospital. Our main priority is to balance efficiency with large doses of caring and concern.” Another staff member, Christine Bliss, reports her job is very rewarding. “I feel good at the end of the day when I know I was able to make a difference in a person’s outlook by cheering them up, or smoothing away worries by being there to answer questions.” As we approach National Healthcare Access Personnel Week (April 4-10, 2010), we acknowledge our special goodwill ambassadors in the Patient Access Department for initiating the caring spirit that exists among the entire Mercy Family.
