45 cats rescued and find new
homes through adoptions

This February, Hawaii celebrates the beginning of “Year of the Tiger,” which holds a
special place in the hearts of most of us
who love cats. So the recent rescue of 45
feline friends from a Mililani apartment
couldn’t have been more timely.
A visit to the Hawaiian Humane Society’s
Cat House and you’ll find a variety of
healthy, well-groomed cats ready to climb
in your lap and charm their way into your
heart. A woman from Honolulu and her
child sat quietly in one of the visitation
rooms surrounded by purring, happy cats.
The little boy gleefully exclaimed, “I want

Adoption is a loving choice
Dogs arrive to the Humane Society in so
many ways and with hearts full of hope.
Take Maya’s story for example. A father
and son were headed to Waianae to feed
homeless families during Thanksgiving
when they witnessed Maya’s abandonment. A man had pulled over his truck
and thrown his dog into the bushes and
sped away. Horrified at such cruel abandonment, the father and son rescued
Maya and immediately headed to the
Humane Society. She was suffering from
a number of treatable illnesses and the
Society provided the care she desperately needed. Adopted, she now resides
with a loving family in Mililani.
More than 50 dogs are available for
adoption on any given day at the Hu-
mane Society. More than 2,800 found
families last year through our adoptions center in Moili‘ili and at PETCO
– Kapolei. By choosing adoption, pet
owners make a loving decision to help
animals in need and not add to Oahu’s
pet overpopulation crises. View dogs for

Each adoption is just $65 and includes
up to $650 in health care services
including a health exam, sterilization,
worming, a microchip and post-adoption care. The Society’s donors underwrite many of the health care expenses
so adoption fees are affordable for all.
Humane Society addresses
pet-friendly housing shortage
When Donna and her son Chris moved
to Hawaii from Alaska, they were eager to
start their new life in paradise. Despite an
intensive and desperate search, the reality
was that they could find no rental home
that would welcome their dog Kadon. Their
situation became critical and they turned to
the Hawaiian Humane Society for help and
we placed Kadon in temporary foster care.
At the Hawaiian Humane Society, we
believe that families should never have to
choose between their pet and a place to
live. That’s why we’ve launched a new feature on our website. Visit hawaiian
humane.org for a listing of pet-friendly
rental units currently available. Simply
click on Pets in Housing on our home page.
Landlords can post their rentals for free.
The Humane Society’s Pets in Housing program works to increase
the number of pet-friendly residences. We work with landlords
and tenants, home owners and associations, property and resident
managers, realtors, as well as people who love animals and people
who don’t.
Since more than 60 percent of Oahu’s households include pets, policies that ban animal companions limit the pool of qualified applicants and unnecessarily penalize the majority of pet owners
who are responsible.

New rescue vehicle
hits the road
When you spot the Humane Society’s new rescue vehicle, know that an
animal’s life is being saved! The Society’s Field Services Department puts
the pedal to the metal to respond to more than 17,000 calls for service
every year. You can help us devote more time to emergencies, rescues and
cruelty investigations by bringing in lost animals any time of day or night
to our shelter at 2700 Waialae rather than calling for a pick-up.

these!” He pointed to two beautiful,
gray striped tabbies that were delighted
to be held.
It’s hard to fathom that two such delightful felines for adoption were living
in filthy conditions in cramped quarters with more than 40 others just days
before. “The owners failed to provide
even minimal standards of nutrition,
sanitation and veterinary care,” said
Keoni Vaughn, the Humane Society’s
field services manager. “The cats were
desperate for water, health care and
other basic needs. We’re just relieved
we got to these cats in time.”
Neighbors said they had complained
about the smell coming from the
Mililani apartment where the animals
were found. Upon entry to the small
2-bedroom apartment, the Humane
Society’s rescue team found cats from
about 3 months old to about 8 years of
age living amongst their own waste and
trash. The rescue team was forced to
wear masks and it took more than five
hours to remove the animals.
On Oahu, the Hawaiian Humane
Society is the only animal welfare
organization that shelters, rescues,
adopts and welcomes animals.

for the benefit of Hawaii’s animals
and people. As an independent
non-profit, we receive no funds
from mainland organizations.
After the investigations team met
with the cat owners, they opted to
relinquish ownership recognizing that
they had acquired more cats than they
could care for.
“In these kinds of situations, owners
have no real perception of the harm
they’re doing,” says Pamela Burns,
Humane Society president and ceo.
“Loving your pets is not enough. Providing for their needs is what every cat
deserves.”

Forty rabbits were recently surrendered to the Humane
Society by a Honolulu owner who confessed that she had
more than she could properly care for. She agreed to shut
down her breeding operation and turned in all her cages and
equipment too. Thanks to your donations, our veterinarian
staff has treated minor illnesses, as well as spayed or neutered them. They eagerly await adoption.

Something Tasty for the Animals
Mahalo to 12th Avenue Grill for their benefit night that
resulted in more than $500 for the Humane Society. The restaurant donated a portion of food sales for an evening to their
favorite pet charity.
Forest City Raises the Woof
Forest City residential management company for Navy
Housing made an offer that employees couldn’t refuse:
donate $5 or more to the Humane Society and employees could wear blue jeans to work for a day. $1,800
was raised.

Valentine’s Day weekend. Half price on all creatures great and
small. The adoptions special helped 53 pets find true love.

Cox Radio sponsored a promotion where listeners who spotted our new rescue van won a prize for calling in.
