Fi$h Class CRAFTed Project With Glass Ar7st Michael Ray Theme: Pirates v Introduc7on As we were going to be working with a glass ar7st, we decided to inves7gate the material glass before he came. We began this project by asking ques7ons about glass. During laptop 7me we researched in pairs using the online Britannica Encyclopaedia to create concept maps about glass. Following our research on glass... Theme How did we decide on the theme of pirates? PIRATE THEME Grainne Mhaol, the pirate queen, inspired our theme of pirates. We came across the story of Grainne Mhaol when learning the song ‘Oró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile’. Grainne Mhaol was a pirate queen who lived in the West of Ireland in the 16th Century. She wanted to be a pirate. Her father said that her hair was too long and would get caught in the ropes. Grainne cut off her her, geWng her name-‐ Grainne Mhaol which means Bald Grainne. Grainne Mhaol Óró, sé do bheatha abhaile
óró, sé do bheatha abhaile

Lesson 1 On the 19th of February, the glass ar7st Michael Ray visited 5th class for the first 7me! He began by explaining all about glass •  Here are some of the things we learned This is a procedure about the mono prin7ng we did in our first lesson with Michael: Mono Prin(ng Goal: The goal is to create a mono print with glass. Materials: A flat piece of glass, prin7ng ink, a roller, a piece of paper and a pencil. Method: 1: Place piece of glass on smooth surface. 2: Put ink on glass and roll prin7ng ink ink on with roller. 3: Place paper on glass. 4: Use pencil and draw on paper. 5: Take paper off glass. Evalua(on: A great picture is born. This is called Mono Prin7ng. I hope you enjoyed it. Here is an example of monoprin7ng: Here are some more examples: Between Michael’s visits we did a lot of background research and lessons on pirates. We listened to the poem ‘ The Homesick Pirate’ by Joshua Seigal The Homesick Pirate There was a homesick pirate, His name was Danny Dunn, Last night in bed he made a wish – He thought it would be fun To hop aboard a pirate ship Instead of going to school. I don’t know why, I guess he thought It would be kind of cool. But now he’s going to and fro Across the Irish Sea When all he wants is to go home And selle down to tea. They hoist the Jolly Roger And they drink their jugs of rum, But it isn’t quite as Danny thought: He’s crying for his mum. He didn’t know they’re dirty And he didn’t know they stank And the pirates keep on threatening To make him walk the plank. There’s droppings in the porridge And no malress on the bunks; There’s lice in Blackbeard’s beard And there’s sand in Danny’s trunks. Everyone has scurvy And they scowl with snaggled teeth; There’s beetles on the top deck And the rats live underneath. So next 7me that you make a wish Heed what I say, it’s true: Young Danny hates the pirate life And so, I think, will you. We wrote our own poems about pirates. We listened to and sang Sea Shan7es. Here is an example: Shiver My Timbers, shiver My Soul Yo Ho He Ho There are men whos hearts as black as coal And they sailed there ship across the ocean blue A Blood thirsty captain and a cut throat crew. Its a darker tale as was ever told Of a lust for treasure and a love of gold... Shiver My Timbers, Shiver my sides Yo ho he ho There are hungers as strong as the winds and 7des Yo ho he ho And those bucaneers drowned there sins in rum, The devil himself would have to call em scum! Every man on board would have killed his mate for a bag of ginnys or a piece of eight, a piece of eight, a piece of eight 5 6 7 8 HULA WOKA HULA WOKA SOMETHING NOT RIGHT MANY WICKY ICKY THINGS GONNA HAPPEN TONIGHT HULA WOKA HULA WOKA SAILOR MAN BEWARE When the money in the ground theres murder in the air, Murder in the air. ONE MORE TIME NOW Shiver my 7mbers, Shiver my bones Yo ho he ho There are secrets that sleep with old davey jones Yo ho he ho When the main sails set and the course is weighd Theres no turning back from any course thats laid And when greed and felony sail the sea, you can bet your boots there'll be treachery HA HA HA YAAAAAA YA YA YA AAAAAAAA YAAAAAAA Shiver my 7mber, Shiver my sail Dead men tell no tales! Treasure Island •  We listened to the novel Treasure Island every day and did a variety of ac7vi7es based on this novel. We finally finished Treasure Island and completed this ac7vity on the plot of the story. A$er reading an ar7cle on pirates we decided on some VeryImportantPoints about them; We did Word Cline on Pirates: We watched Pirates of the Caribbean for inspira7on. We also made Pirate Profiles We also learned the language of pirates! We learned to read pirate maps and created some of our own: Lesson 2 In lesson 2 we created a visual story . We had to draw onto a long chart. The chart had a lot of drawings We had to create a pirate story for the chart. Every five minutes everyone switched places and con7nued to draw. In class we took all of the best ideas and created one long story with five parts to it. We then split into groups of 5 and drew pictures for our sec7on of the story. Here are the five pictures depic7ng each stage of the story: The Tale of Two Ships A summary of each part of the story is…. We had to research about real pirates. Everyone did a project on The Sack of Bal7more. Here are some of the projects: Sack of Bal-more The Sack of Bal7more took place on June 20, 1631, when the village of Bal7more was alacked by North African pirates. The alack was the biggest single alack by the Barbary pirates on Ireland or Britain. The village was destroyed and abandoned for a long 7me. Recently we found out about the pirate fes7val in Bal7more. The fes7val is on the 21st of June. Lesson 3 During our third lesson with Michael each group transferred their picture onto a piece of clay crea7ng a clay panel. We began by covering a square piece of wood with clay. We drew our picture onto the clay and then began building up and carving out the shapes. Every group produced an individual clay panel. Our next project was on Modern Day Pirates. Everyone presented a project about modern day pirates who come from Somalia. With St. Patrick’s Day looming we focused on his encounters with irish pirates and explored this through drama. Lesson 4 During lesson four we made a plaster mould from our clay panel. We poured plaster on the clay panels. Picture here This was le$ to dry and when separated we had our plaster mould with the design in reverse. A$er cleaning them we were ready for the next lesson. On World Book Day our whole class dressed up as pirates. We had a pirate themed day with lots of fun pirate ac7vi7es. We played a pirate game called Cannon Ball and one called Walk the Plank. We also burst a pirate pinata. Noooo! Lesson 5-‐Final Lesson  During lesson five we filled the plaster mould with different coloured glass. We used glass frit (crushed glass). We poured the frit into the mould. Michael took these plaster moulds home to his kiln where he fired them with a piece of glass for 12 hours. The powder melts into the glass and creates the coloured glass panels. Then the glass panels are le$ to cool for a further 12 hours. We have decided that the best place for the panels are the five windows in the staffroom which can be seen from the school yard. Bonus Quest for 5th class: Design a Pirate Ship Our final pirate ac7vity was for every pupil to design and make a pirate boat. We had to provide the following in order to complete the project: •  Report on my research of Pirate Ship •  2 labelled diagrams of designs before and a$er construc7on •  Photo of ship floa7ng in a body of water •  5 day diary recording tasks completed •  Pirate Ship construc7on •  Ship’s Name We finally had to present our ship to the class. The standard of the projects were very high. Our Pirate Ship Construc7ons Fi$h Class would like to thank Michael Ray for visi7ng our class, for helping us to learn about his cra$ and helping us to partake in lots of interes7ng ac7vi7es, Our families for helping us with the three pirate projects that we did at home , Our principal and Board of Management for funding and allowing us to avail of this excellent CRAFTed project. LET’S GO AND LOOK AT THE PANELS NOW!!!
