IRELAND
IMPRESSIVE FIRST
WINNER FOR EVASIVE
MAGICIAN ARRIVES
LATE TO LAND MOORESBRIDGE
Magician, last year’s Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and Gr.1
Breeders’ Cup Turf victor, justified favouritism in the Gr.3
Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh, but he was made to
work harder than his starting price of 2/13 suggested.
The four-year-old son of Galileo, who had finished three
lengths behind Gentildonna (Deep Impact) in sixth in the
Gr.1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan on his reappearance,
was held up in rear by Joseph O’Brien and got on top in the
closing stages to beat Jim Bolger’s 2011 Gr.1 Dewhurst
Stakes winner Parish Hall (Teofilo), who looked like he had
stolen the race when quickening clear a furlong out. The
winning distance was a neck and there was two and a
quarter lengths back to Magician’s stable-companion, Hall
Of Mirrors (Duke Of Marmalade), in third.
Haras de Grandcamp’s first season sire Evasive got off
the mark when the appropriately-named Evasive’s First
landed a maiden over five and a half furlongs at MarseilleBorely on his second start. The two-year-old stormed
home by four lengths from the dead-heating pair
Albertochop (Deportivo) and Augura (Big Bad Bob).
Bred by Grandcamp and a €24,000 Osarus graduate, he
is out of Zalia (Oasis Dream), a half-sister to the Gr.3
Preis der Winterkonigin-third Hashbrown (Big Shuffle).
Evasive, a son of Elusive Quality, won the Gr.3 Horris
Hill Stakes and finished fourth to Mastercraftsman in the
2009 Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes. Bred by Cheveley
Park Stud, who acquired him in utero when purchasing his
Listed-placed dam Canda (Storm Cat) for $2.4 million,
comes from one of the most successful families in the
stud book. His second dam is the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des
Pouliches and the Gr.1 Prix de Diane winner East Of The
Moon (Private Account) and his third dam is the mighty
Miesque (Nureyev).
Evasive, who has proved popular with French breeders,
stands at a fee of €3,000 and will cover around 100 mares
this year.

RACING REVIEW
It was a fifth consecutive victory in the race for Aidan
O’Brien, following the successes of Fame And Glory
(Montjeu), So You Think (High Chaparral), Windsor
Palace (Danehill Dancer) and Camelot (Montjeu).
O’Brien believes that there is plenty of improvement to
come from Magician. “I nearly got a heart attack looking at
him [before the race],” he said. “He was away in Dubai and
things didn’t go right for him. We gave him a little rest and
he had a good tummy on him today.
“He’s going to come back here for the Tattersalls Gold
Cup. He’s in a good place now and Joseph was very
happy and said he won snug. He’s not gone right-handed
that much before.”
Bred by the Absolutelyfabulous Syndicate, his grandam
Lady Windermere (Lake Coniston) was unraced but is a
half-sister to the Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and Gr.1
Fillies’ Mile winner Listen (Sadler’s Wells) and the Gr.1
Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Sequoyah (Sadler’s Wells;
dam of the multiple Gr.1 winner and successful Breeders’
Cup sire Henrythenavigator), from a family which
includes the Gr.1 winners Dolphin Street (Bluebird),
Insight (Sadler’s Wells), Saffron Walden (Sadler’s Wells)
and Beethoven (Oratorio).
Dermot Weld enjoyed a successful day at the Curragh by
landing the two other Stakes races on the card with lightly
raced three-year-olds for prominent owner/breeders.
Flying Jib, a three-year-old Khalid Abdullah homebred
daughter of Oasis Dream, completed the double when
defeating Aidan O’Brien’s new recruit Peace Burg
(Sageburg) to land the Gr.3 Athasi Stakes on her threeyear-old reappearance.
Weld said, “We’ll have to consider her for the [Gr.1] Irish
1,000 Guineas. She won a Listed race well here last year, and
I think she’ll appreciate a mile.”
After finishing fourth in a maiden at the Curragh on Irish
2,000 Guineas Day, she has done nothing but improve,
landing a maiden at Dundalk before rounding off her
campaign with victory in the Listed Staffordstown Stud
Stakes at this track in October.
She is the second foal out of the dual US Gr.2 winner
Jibboom (Mizzen Mast) and she is is out of a half-sister
to the dual Gr.1-placed sire Boatman (Irish River) and to
the dam of Gr.2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes winner
Aviate (Dansili) and the Gr.3 Prix La Rochette winner, Gr.1
Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere runner-up and sire Early March
(Dansili). This is also the family of Al Bahathri (Blushing
Groom), Haafhd (Alhaarth), Gladiatorus (Silic),
Heatseeker (Giant’s Causeway), Lord Shanakill
(Speightstown) et al.
Alkasser had earlier carried the colours of Hamdan Al
Maktoum to win the Listed Tetrarch Stakes, putting
himself in line for a crack at the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas.
The son of Shamardal, who had got off the mark at the
second attempt in a conditions race at Cork last month,
stayed on strongly under Leigh Roche to beat the Jim
Bolger-trained pair Focus On Venice and Intensical,
both sons of the Co Carlow former inmate Intense Focus,
by three-quarters of a length and the same distance.
Bred by Mountarmstrong Stud, Alkasser was sold for
€260,000 as a yearling at the Goffs Orby Sale to Shadwell
Estate Co Ltd. He is a half-brother to the two-year-old
winner Asraab (Oasis Dream) and the four-time winner

Bogini (Holy Roman Emperor). His dam, Alexander
Queen (King’s Best), won as a two-year-old and is a halfsister to Ballyhane Stud’s successful stallion Dandy Man
(Mozart), who won the Gr.3 Palace House Stakes and was
second in the Gr.2 (now Gr.1) King’s Stand Stakes and
third in the Gr.1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes. They are out
of the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes and Gr.3 Molecomb Stakes
winner Lady Alexander (Night Shift), who is also the
grandam of the Gr.3 Abernant Stakes winner Hamza
(Amadeus Wolf).
In the opening conditions race on the card, Aidan
O’Brien’s juvenile The Great War made it two wins from
as many starts and put himself on course for a trip to
Royal Ascot.
Sent off 1/9 favourite after his easy win a Tipperary last
month, the son of the red-hot War Front ws sent to the
front over a furlong out and quickened clear without being
extended to win by three lengths from the Paddy
Prendergast-trained Bwana (Footstepsinthesand), the
only other previous winner in the race.
O’Brien said: “I’m delighted with that. He’s fast and he’s
made a lovely progression from Tipperary. He could come
back here for the Marble Hill Stakes, if the ground was
fast. If not he could go straight to Royal Ascot.”
Purchased for $1 million at the Keeneland September
Yearling Sale, he is a half-brother to eight-time winner
Escort (First Samurai), out of the three-year-old winner
Guide (Pulpit), a half-sister to the dual Stakes winner
Laity and a half-sister to the dual US Gr.3 winner Trip
(Lord At War) and the dual Stakes winner Joke (Phone
Trick), who is the dam of the triple Gr.1 winning sprinter
Zensational (Unbridled’s Song).
third dam Park Express (Ahonoora) was a Gr.1 winner at
two and is the dam of the dual Champion, five-times Gr.1
winner and Classic sire New Approach and multiple
Stakes winner and sire Shinko Forest, and is the second
dam of the Gr.1 Oaks winner Was.
He has a first crop of 58 two-year-olds, conceived at a
fee of €5,000. They were headed at the yearling sales by
a €60,000 half-brother to last season’s Gr.1 2,000 Guineas
runner-up Glory Awaits out of Sandbox Two, and a
37,000gns colt out of the Listed-placed Common
Rumpus. He has a second crop of arounf 44 yearlings.

SALES TALK
and this was reflected in fierce competition for
broodmares today at the Inglis Broodmare Sale, writes
Stephen Heath.
The trade was highlighted by the dispersal of Tyreel
Stud, and Inglis’ Bloodstock Director Jonathan d’Arcy
commented: “The first two days of the sale have been
terrific. We are honoured that Dean Fleming entrusted
Inglis to disperse Tyreel Stud’s quality broodmare band
which was highly sort after by buyers.
He added: “There is certainly plenty of optimism in the
market as we’ve seen new players enter and existing ones
show their intentions to grow with sizeable purchases in
bloodstock today. We very much look forward to being
given the opportunity to offer the progeny of mares
purchased today at our select weanling, yearling and twoyear-old sales in the future.”
With the sale taking a different date and format,
statistical comparisons are difficult, but the sale featured
an aggregate of A$12,980,850 for 204 mares and an
exceptionally strong clearance rate of 8%. The leading
single buyer (behind the Wiliam Inglis as Agent
designation) was Sydney-based agency James Harron
Bloodstock, who signed for 14 purchases for a total of
A$1.3 million, while Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont
Bloodstock signed for eleven mares for a total of
A$977,000, the only other buyer to purchase more than ten
mares.
Widden Stud’s Golden Slipper winner Sebring has had
a hot run of form of late and this was reflected with the
sale of Lot 300, Crafty Irna, sold in foal to him for
A$610,000 to William Inglis as Agent. Crafty Irna was also
consigned by Widden Stud and sold carrying her first foal.
She was herself a high-class racemare, winner of the Gr.3
Adrian Knox Stakes, as well as being multiple Group and
Listed-placed. She is by Starcraft and out of the
Singapore Horse of the Year, Zirna (Deputy Governor),
three times a Gr.1 winner in Singapore.
The next highest price was A$480,000 paid by Steve

Brem for Lot 323, the New Zealand Listed winer
Crossyourheart (Show A Heart) consigned as part of the
Tyreel dispersal. She was named the top filly on the 2006/7
New Zealand 2YO Free Handicap. Sold carrying a fullsibling to a Commands filly who sold to Shadwell
Australia for A$600,000 here at the Easter Yearling Sale,
Crossyourheart is the dam of four foals, including the
winner Juantorena (Pins), an unraced Sebring two-yearold named Winmotion and a Redoute’s Choice colt foal.
She is a full-sister to Gr.3 winner Gotta Have Heart, out of
half-sister to the dam of Hong Kong Gr.1 winner All Thrills
Too (St Covet).
It was another mare from the Tyreel dispersal who
elicited the third-highest price, with $375,000 paid by
Bruce Perry Bloodstock for Lot 338, the Gr.1 winner Mid
Summer Music (Omaru Force). Winner of the Stradbroke
Handicap in Brisbane, Mid Summer Music was also a dual
Gr.3 winner, as well as being multiply Group placed,

“Whilst we are well aware that Australasian stewarding
is different in style to European stewarding and that their
rules are not always the same as ours, some of the
behaviour and processes that we witnessed fell far below
the standards one would expect from a fair and
reasonable regulator.
“The result is that we have serious misgivings about the
rules and stewarding in Dubai and do not believe that
jockeys can be assured of a fair hearing.
“Furthermore, we are disappointed and concerned that
there has already been an attempt to put pressure on the
BHA in relation to this matter.
“We trust that the BHA will resist any further such
attempts by the ERA.”
including in the Gr.1 VRC Patinack Classic Flemington.
She was sold carrying her first foal, by Black Caviar’s
Champion Three-Year-Old half-brother and first-season
stallion All Too Hard. Mid Summer Music is out of an
unraced half-sister to Czaravich, a Gr.1 winner in America
of the Metropolitan Handicap.
Another mare from the Tyreel dispersal made the fourthhighest price of the day, with Lot 329, the Redoute’s
Choice mare Brothers Dream selling to Corumbene Stud
for A$370,000. Carrying her fourth foal to Sepoy, after
fillies by Big Brown, Lonhro and Smart Missile, she was
herself only placed, but a half-sister to Gr.1 Galaxy
Handicap winner Charge Forward (Red Ransom),
themselves both out of Gr.1 winner in South Africa,
Sydney’s Dream (Bletchingly).
San Cristobel, another from the Tyreel dispersal, was
sold for A$370,000 to William Inglis as Agent as Lot 339.
A daughter of Fastnet Rock, she was herself a winner
over 900m, and produced of three foals to date. Her first
foal is the winning Henrythenavigator filly Donna
Madeira, while she also has an unraced Teofilo two-yearold, named San Padre, a Bernardini yearling filly and was
sold in foal to Two-Year-Old Triple Crown winner Pierro.
San Cristobel is out of Gr.3 winner Galapogas Girl
(Dehere), herself a half-sister to top-class broodmare
Procrastinate (Jade Hunter), as well as being from the
family of Gr.1 winner Lone Rock, also by Fastnet Rock.

GERMANY
NEW TEAM AT DORTMUND
The race club at Dortmund, which runs one of German’s
leading racecourses and stages the Gr.3 Grosser Preis der
Wirtschaft, Gr.3 Deutsches St Leger etc, has appointed a
new team to take charge.
At the general meeting of the members last week,
Andreas Tiedtke was voted in as the new president and
Manfred Ostermann as one of two vice-presidents. Both
Tiedtke and Ostermann are leading figures in the German
racing industry. Tiedtke, a 45-year-old business
consultant, has held several top positions; he has been
manager of the influential Owners and Breeders
Association and of Baden Racing, secretary-general of the
Direktorium, and he also represents Germany on
numerous international committees; he is also on the
board of EFTBA (European Thoroughbred Breeders).
Ostermann is one of Germany’s top owner-breeders
(Gestüt Hof Ittlingen), is president of the Owners and
Breeders Association and vice-president of the
Direktorium.
The new team has big plans for Dortmund and has
promised to bring in new ideas and new concepts, and to
ensure the financial security and independence of the
racecourse. “Our aim is to provide top class entertainment
and quality leisure for everybody.”

PJA ASKS BHA NOT TO ENFORCE
COSGRAVE’S SUSPENSION
The Professional Jockeys Association will ask the British
Horseracing Authority not to reciprocate Pat Cosgrave’s
Dubai suspension after the rider’s ban was only partially
reduced from six to four months.
Cosgrave was hit with the lengthy suspension after he
was found to have moved Anaerobio (Catcher In The
Rye) off the rail in the straight to allow fellow Mike de
Kock-trainer runner Vercingetorix (Silvano) through on
the inside to win the Gr.1 Jebel Hatta at Meydan in March.
Anaerobio eventually finished third in the nine-furlong
contest, two lengths behind the winner.
The Emirates Racing Authority found Cosgrave guilty of
a blatant breach of the rule regarding improper riding
which has a detrimental image to racing and handed out
the suspension following an inquiry last month.
Cosgrave and the PJA swiftly lodged an appeal and,
while the ban has been reduced, PJA chief executive Paul
Struthers is unsatisfied with the outcome.
Struthers, who was present at the appeal, said: “Despite
the suspension being reduced by two months, we are
deeply disappointed with the decision of the Emirates
Racing Authority’s Appeal Board.
“This is an unfair and as yet unexplained decision, and
we believe the Appeal Board has seriously erred in its
judgement. As a result we will today be lodging an
application on behalf of Pat Cosgrave with the BHA,
requesting that they do not reciprocate the suspension.

are to race; and the benefits of interaction between
stewards and security and integrity departments.
Looking towards the increasing internationalisation of
racing, further presentations examined: the possibility for
protest/objection hearings being conducted in a
harmonised manner around the world; and the merits of
having jurisdictional gear/equipment registers to assist
connections given the ever increasing movement of
racehorses between countries.
On the day of the opening ceremony, a piece of racing
history was made when the Executive Council of the
International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA)
met for the first time at an Asian Racing Conference.
The Executive Council meeting considered major policy
issues, including proposals on the international
harmonisation of anti-doping control, forensic testing
laboratory certification, and the genetic integrity of
thoroughbreds. The Council also reaffirmed its strong
support for the World Organisation for Animal Health
(OIE), which with it is working hard on issues concerning
the international movement of horses, including research
into equine influenza.
The IFHA Executive Council consists of 13 members
drawn from three regions – Europe, the Americas and
Asia. It meets again in Paris in October 2014 in
conjunction with the running of the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de
Triomphe.
Apart from summer racing on grass, Dortmund also has
one of Germany’s two all-weather tracks, racing
throughout the winter. The other such track is at Neuss,
which recently announced that it is also to stage turf
racing again after a gap of eight years. DCS
HONG KONG
STEWARDS’ CONFERENCE CONFIRMS
PROGRESS ON ’BIG ISSUES’
The 5th International Stewards’ Conference was held
yesterday at Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong, in
conjunction with the 35th Asian Racing Conference.
Chaired by Kim Kelly, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Chief
Stipendiary Steward, the conference was attended by 71
delegates representing 28 racing jurisdictions.
One of horseracing’s most important rules is the
protest/objection rule which, until relatively recently, was
operated in several different ways around the world. This
issue was highlighted at the 31st Asian Racing
Conference in Dubai in 2007, since when great progress
has been made to harmonise the rule internationally,
thanks to discussions held during previous International
Stewards’ Conferences and meetings of the IFHA’s
International Harmonisation of Raceday Rules Committee.
There was further welcome news on that front at the
Stewards’ Conference today, when Yoshihiro Nakamura,
Chief Steward of the Japan Racing Association informed
delegates of the results of a change to the
protest/objection rules in Japan that had taken place in
2013. The JRA had changed to the ’Category 1’
philosophy, which is widely used throughout Asia,
Australasia, Great Britain, India, Ireland and South Africa.
Nakamura reported that in 2012 there were 142
protest/objection inquiries conducted, with a change to
the judge’s placings being made on 21 occasions. Of
these 21 instances, seven horses were disqualified as a
result of being found to have caused interference which
affected the result of the race, irrespective of where in the
field the offending horse finished. By contrast, during 2013
there were just 25 inquiries with only one change to the
result of a race. Further, there were no horses disqualified
from a race for having caused interference.
Against the background of events in various parts of the
racing world over the past few months, another significant
discussion at the conference was held on the subject of
the level of penalties that should be applied to serious
offences, including the use of anabolic steroids and issues
relating to animal welfare. On that subject, the conference
was pleased to note a report from Johan Petzer, Chairman
of Stewards at Thoroughbred Racing South Australia,
concerning the introduction in Australia of mandatory
minimum penalties relating to offences involving
prohibited substances and animal welfare.
Some of the other subjects discussed on a wide-ranging
agenda were: the provision of information by stewards to
the public through mainstream media and the increasing
use of social media platforms; a study currently being
conducted in Hong Kong regarding the health, fitness and
welfare of jockeys; rules applying in certain jurisdictions
regulating or prohibiting medication/treatment being
administered to horses on or leading up to the day they

SHONAN LAGOON LANDS
IMPORTANT DERBY TRIAL
The Gr.2 Aoba Sho is labelled as a Japanese Derby Trial
but in the last 30 years no horse that has won the race has
gone on to win the Classic. The record of the Aoba Sho’s
graduates in the Derby is pretty good, however, with
Fenomeno, Win Variation, Admire Main, Zenno Rob
Roy and Symboli Kris S all going on to finish second.
Shonan Lagoon posted a 52/1 upset at Tokyo Racecourse
on Saturday and may well be able to avenge the defeat of
his sire Symboli Kris S, who got beaten one length by
Tanino Gimlet in the 2002 Derby.
Shonan Lagoon needed every yard of the 2400m and
surged from the back of the pack to score by a head from
the favourite World Impact (Deep Impact), who hit the
front 300m from home but had no response to the winner’s
challenge in the closing stages. Yamano Wizard stayed on
for third from Gold Actor (Screen Hero).
If nine horses finish within less than two lengths of each
other, we tend to think that the race was falsely run or,
worst, that it was a below-average field. However, this
year’s Aoba Sho was run at a decent pace (1:01.4 for the

only once, but that came by way of a stunning 3½ lengths
victory in the nine furlong Gr.1 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood
Park in June. She also came with in a neck of capturing the
Gr.1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland in mid-April and took
thirds in the Gr.1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes, Gr.2 Buena Vista
Stakes, Gr.2 A Gleam Handicap and Wishing Well Stakes.
Byrama has made three starts this year, including a second
in the Ten Palms Stakes and an off-the-board effort in the
Gr.1 Madison Stakes.
Bred by Ermyn Lodge Stud Ltd, she is a half-sister to
Klammer, winner of the Listed Criterium du Fonds
Europeen de l’Elevage and the Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes. Their
dam, Aymara, is out of Chipaya, winner of the Listed (then)
October Stakes, and a half-sister to the sire Winker Watson,
who took the Gr.2 Norfolk Stakes and the Gr.2 July Stakes.
SEEK AGAIN (2010 c by Speightstown – Light Jig by
Danehill) upset the locals back in December when winning
the Gr.1 Hollywood Derby on his US and Stakes debut.
Making his first start since then, he nearly delivered a far
greater shock, running dual US Horse of the Year Wise Dan
to a head in the Gr.1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes
on the Kentucky Derby card. Racing in Britain, the
Juddmonte Farms homebred won a maiden at Newmarket
in late September at two, then closed his brief first campaign
with a second at Leicester. He was not seen in action last
year until August, when he took a seven furlong handicap at
Newmarket. Second in a mile handicap on the all-weather at
Kempton Park next time out, the chesnut was fourth in a
similar event at the same venue, before running a good fifth
in the Cambridgeshire. He bade his fairwell to Britain
stepping up to nine furlongs to take a handicap at York.
Seek Again’s dam, Light Jig, also found fame in the US
after racing in Europe. She was twice placed in French
Listed races, but captured the Gr.1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes
and the Gr.2 Beverly Hills Handicap after moving stateside.
She is also the dam of Seek Again’s three-parts-brother
Treble Jig, whose most notable victory came in the Gr.3
Jebel Ali Mile Stakes. Light Jig is a half-sister to the French
Stakes-winning duo of Lynton and Battle Dore, and to the
dam of German black-type scorer Daring Tiger. Seek
Again’s grandam, Nasmeel, won the Gr. 2 (then) Prix
d’Astarte and the Listed Prix des Lilas in France, and was
Gr.1-placed in both France and the US.
Irish-conceived, but Kentucky-foaled, GLOBAL VIEW
(2011 c by Galileo – Egyptian Queen by Storm Cat) shaped
like a horse with a bright future when taking the Gr.3
Generous Stakes at Hollywood Park on his third and final run
of 2013. Switching coasts, he was second to odds-on
favorite Bobby’s Kitten in a mile allowance test at Tampa
Bay Downs in March, but failed to fire when seventh of
eight in the Gr.3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland in early
April. On Saturday, the three-year-old rebounded with a
much better effort in the Gr.2 American Turf Stakes,
closing from well off the pace to score by a neck.
RACING REVIEW
NASHOBA STRIKES GOLD IN
PROVIDENCIA STAKES
NASHOBA’S GOLD (2011 f by Smart Strike – Nashoba by
Caerleon), whom we noted as an an emerging prospect
early this winter, continues to progress towards the top of
her division. Successful in a maiden special weight at Santa
Anita in February on her debut, she was second in the China
Doll Stakes exactly a month later. She duly gained a first
Stakes win with a length victory in the Gr.3 Providencia
Stakes in April and on Sunday added a win in the Gr.2
Honeymoon Stakes to her resume.
Bred by Williamson Racing, LLC, she is a half-sister to the
brilliant, but ill-fated Nashoba’s Key, a winner of three Gr.1s.
Her dam, the Irish-foaled Nashoba, a winner of three races,
is a half-sister to the Group-placed Pillars Of Society, dam
of the Gr..3 Regret Stakes victrix Good Mood and the
Stakes-placed Gris Fauve. The second dam, Gris Mine,
took the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary, and is a half-sister to
Kostroma, a Group winner in Ireland who went on to take
six Graded events, three Gr.1s in the US and later produced
the Gr.1 Santa Anita Oaks winner Ariege.
Successful in an 8½-furlong allowance at Belmont Park on
her debut, which came last July, ORION MOON (2009 f by
Manduro – Okocha by Platini) was unplaced against
tougher competition in the Speed Boat Stakes next time out,
but rebounded to take second in an allowance/optional
claiming race at Gulfstream Park in late March. On Saturday
the chesnut produced an excellent effort in the Gr.3 Beaugay
Stakes, missing out by just a neck. She made four starts in
France, all at three, winning on her debut, and taking third in
the Listed Prix Petite Etoile on her final outing.
Bred by Chevotel De La Hauquerie, she is a half-sister to
the Listed winner Orion Star, also several times Groupplaced, including when third in the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris
and the Gr.1 Prix du Cadran; the Stakes winner Orion Girl
and the Group-placed Orion Love. The second dam,
Ochoa, is half-sister to the German Stakes winner Osibisa.
A length and a quarter behind Orion Moon, finishing well
from the back of the pack was BYRAMA (2009 m by Byron
– Aymara by Darshaan). A winner of a five-furlong maiden at
Carlisle from two starts at two in Britain, she made her debut
back in December 2011, taking third in the Blue Norther
Stakes at Santa Anita. She went on to enjoy a busy, but
lucrative 2012 season; ten starts bringing wins in a Santa
Anita allowance/optional claiming event, the Unzip Me
Stakes at Santa Anita, and the Manhattan Beach Stakes at
Hollywood Park. She also took second in the Gr.3
Providencia Stakes and C E R F S Stakes and third in the
Gr.3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes and the Gr.3 Senorita
Stakes. The bay made another ten starts last year. She won

PORTER ACROSS THE POND
Bred by Reiko and Michael Baum, he is out of a daughter
of Warrior Queen, the highweighted three-year-old sprint
filly in England and Ireland for 2000, and also the dam of the
Gr.2-winning and Gr.1-placed A P Warrior. The third dam,
Call Me Fleet is out of Ocean’s Answer, a Stakes-winning
three-quarters to Storm Bird (who appears as the grandsire
of Global View’s dam), and also ancestress of such as
Green Tune, Pas De Reponse, and last year’s Gr.1
Breeders’ Cup Mile-third Silentio.
Another with European connections to perform well on
Derby Day was DAME MARIE (2009 m by Smart Strike –
Crystal Crossing by Royal Academy), who was second in the
Gr.2 Churchill Distaff Mile Stakes. She made a very
promising start to her career taking an 8½-furlong maiden at
Gulfstream Park in February 2012. Rather surprisingly, she
then had to make eight starts before she returned to the
winner’s enclosure, a feat she achieved at Churchill Downs
last April. The four-year-old finally got back on track again at
Churchill in November, recorded a decisive victory in an
allowance/optional claimer. Her only previous outing this
year saw her run seventh in The Very One Stakes at
Gulfstream Park.
Bred by Ben Sangster, she is three-parts-sister to the Gr.1
St Leger hero, Gr.1 Derby-second and sire Rule Of Law, and
Stakes-placed Totally Devoted, who are all, like Dame
Marie, by sons of Mr Prospector out of the Stakes winning
Royal Academy mare, Crystal Crossing. Another halfsister, Cast in Gold, by Mr Prospector’s grandson Elusive
Quality, is the dam of Wedding Ring, who was Groupplaced last yea and also took a couple of valuable events in
the shape of the Tattersalls Millions Fillies’ Two-Year-Old
Stakes and the Tattersalls Millions Fillies’ Two-Year-Old
Trophy. Crystal Crossing is a sister to Circle Of Gold, who
won the Gr.3 Prestige Stakes and was third in the Gr.3 Mrs
Revere Stakes and the Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes. The third
dam, Favoletta, won the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and
produced the brilliantly speedy Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes
winner Amaranda.
English-foaled MAJOR ART (2008 h by Compton Place –
Rosewood Belle by Woodman) ran only four times in his
native country – all at two – winning once and finishing third
in the Gr.2 Vintage Stakes. Shipped to the US for his final two
starts, he rounded out his two-year-old season running
unplaced in the Gr.1 Del Mar Futurity and fourth in the Eddie
Logan Stakes. He started well at three, with a second in the
La Puente Stakes, but his career then underwent a twelvemonth hiatus and, since his return, he has shown only
flashes of his previous form. He ran a good second in the
non-black type Hasta La Vista Handicap at Turf Paradise on
Sunday, looming at the head of the straight, but eventually
running out of steam inside the last of the 15 furlongs.
Bred by Horizon Bloodstock Limited, he is one of four
winners produced by his dam, Rosewood Belle, a halfsister to the US multiple Stakes winner, Glenbarra. The
grandam, Supreme Excellence, won the Be Faithful and
Smart Deb Stakes and Indian Maid Handicap, all while
racing in Illinois. She is a half-sister to Golden Pheasant,
hero of the Gr.1 Japan Cup and Gr.1 Arlington Million, the
Gr.3 Dee Stakes winner Trial By Error, and the Graded
winner Seewillo
A member of the first crop of his sire, HOME SCHOOL
(2011 c by Intense Focus – Lavender Blue by Galileo)
showed himself to be a useful two-year-old in five Irish
starts, winning a maiden at Roscommon and running
second in the Gr.3 Tyros Stakes. He finished off his first
season stateside, running third in the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf
Stakes, fourth in the Zuma Beach Stakes and twelfth in the
Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. The Irish-bred made his
first start of 2014 on Saturday and gained some more blacktype, finishing up well in the 6½ furlong Desert Code Stakes
at Santa Anita to take third, beaten ½ length and 1¼ lengths.
Bred Jim Bolger, he is the second winner from the first two
foals of his dam, the unraced Galileo mare, Lavender Blue.
The grandam, Odabella’s Charm, is a winning half-sister to
the Japanese Stakes performer Kynthia (dam of the Stakes
winner Odile), the Stakes-placed Tenorio and No
Rehearsal (dam of the Listed scorer Jelani) and Lavanda
(grandam of Lucayan, winner of the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des
Poulains and a Graded winner in the US.).
A maiden winner and runner-up in the Fanfreluche Stakes
at two, ROOTHAM TRIPLE E’S (2010 f by Weather
Warning – Peace Dream by Linamix), kicked off her 2013
campaign with a win in the Star Shoot Stakes. She failed to
add to the win column in six subsequent starts, but did claim
second in the Lady Angela Stakes and Passing Mood
Stakes. The bay opened her 2014 season with an unplaced
effort in a Woodbine allowance event in April, but was back
on form on Saturday, taking second in the Ballade Stakes.
Bred by Dream With Me Stable, she is out of the four-time
winner Peace Talk, a half-sister to smart French runner
Peace Burg, winner of the Gr.2 Prix Sandringham and Gr.3
Prix d’Aumale and second yesterday in the Gr.3 Athasi
Stakes, and Peace Fonic, the dam of the French Listed
winner Peace Of Oasis. The grandam, the Sadler’s Wells
mare, Peace Talk, is a sister to the Group winner Palme
D’Or, and a half-sister to the sire Pistolet Bleu, whose
successes included the Gr.1 Prix de Saint-Cloud and the
Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud.
CLENOR (2011 f by Oratorio – Chantarella by Royal
Academy) failed to win in three starts in Ireland, although she
did end her brief career there with a third in the Gr.3
Grangecon Stud Stakes. Transferred to the US, she started
her career with a win in a maiden at Del Mar last August,
then followed up with wins in the Oak Tree Juvenile Fillies
Turf Stakes and Surfer Girl Stakes. The winning run came to
a halt with an eighth in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies
Turf, and she ended the year with a fifth in the Gr.3 Miesque
Stakes. Making her seasonal debut on Friday in the
Ultrafleet Stakes over Santa Anita’s downhill 6½ furlong turf
course, she was in last of six spot after a half-mile, but made
good late headway to claim second.
Bred by Lucy Stack in Ireland, she is three-quarters related
to the black-type placed Choisir duo Another Express and
Celerin. Her dam is a half-sister to the Listed Rous Stakes
scorer My-O-My. The second dam, Maimiti is half-sister to
the Group winner Title Roll and grandam of Cambina, an
ex-European whose triumphs in the US included the Gr.1
American Oaks, and Juno Madonna, dam of the Group
winner Regime and Stakes-winning and Group-placed
Salut D’Amour.

JAPANESE RACING REVIEW
A good, but not sparkling, field of nine contested the
Ayame Sho, over 1800m at Kyoto on Saturday. The USbred Seseri (Curlin), an impressive winner on his debut
back in November at Kyoto, was dropped in class after a
couple of tries in Gr.3 company. He dictated the pace and
reached the line a neck in front of Blue Flash (Swept
Overboard).
A $175.000 dollar purchase at Keeeneland September
Sale, Seseri nearly recovered his price and, even if looks a
bit exposed, he can increase his bank account. He is a
half-brother to Ramazutti (Honor Grade), a smart
performer on grass in US who won the Gr.2 Mac Diarmida
at Gulfstream Park.
On Sunday om Tokyo a good bunch of fillies, which
included some with Group race experience, battled for the
Sweetpea Stakes, a Listed race over 1800m with a first
price of ¥19,350,000. Shiny Girl, who was not disgraced
when unplaced in the Gr.1 Japanese 1,000 Guineas, was
seventh choice in the betting at around 15/1 and
quickened well to score by one and a quarter lengths from
the up-and-coming Bella Regina (Neo Universe), who
closed well after some troubles turning for home.
Shiny Girl is not a superstar but she updated her record
to three wins in seven starts and boosted her earnings to
¥50 million.
She is the best filly from the second crop sired by Black
Tide, an older full-brother to Deep Impact. A Gr.2 winner
at three, Black Tide was out of contention for two years
and came back at five. He failed to win again in three
seasons and 16 starts. He started his stud career in 2009,
two years after Impacto, at ¥500,000 and was well
received by breeders. He covered 629 broodmares in his
first four seasons but dropped to 125 in 2013, when his
fee was raised to ¥1 million. His fee this year is ¥700,000.
Black Tide is a dark bay, more in the Sunday Silence
mould, and he is bigger than Deep Impact. Obviously, he
has not had the same opportunies as Deep Impact, but he
took the First Season Sires’ crown in 2012 and his second
crop included the Gr.3 winner Meiner Frost.
Shiny Girl is the fourth winner from five foals out of
Brightia Girl (Afleet), who landed three sprints on dirt.
Brightia Girl is out of the Group winner Dictar Girl
(Dictus) and has a yearling filly by Gold Allure.
Franco Raimondi

first 1000m, 1:39.6 for the 1600m), and Shonan Lagoon
clocked the final 600m in 33.8. The final time of 2:26.5)was
one second slower than the one recorded by a strong
bunch of useful older horse in the same card. Shonan
Lagoon was credited with a speed rating of 102.5 and
needs to find more improvement to reach the Derby
standard. The speed rating have been listed on the official
JBIS website since 2007 and the lowest mark by a Derby
winner was 108.5 set by Deep Brillante two years ago.
Shonan Lagoon won with something in hand, though,
and relished the step up in trip. He ran seventh on his
debut in August at Hakodate and looked a different horse
when he scored on his second start, which came off a
four-and-half month layoff at Nakayama in December. His
connections asked him for a substantial move in the Gr.3
Keisei Hai just four weeks after that win and the colt ran a
flat race. He hit the board in three subsequent starts
agains winners, two of them around the sharp turns of
Nakayama.
Owner Tetsuhide Kunimoto secured Shonan Lagoon for
¥24,000,000 at the JHRA Selected Yearling Sale. The colt
is the first foal out of Mejiro Charade (Manhattan Cafe),
who had just two starts, running third on her debut at two
in July and winning in August at Niigata. Mejiro Charade is
one of the three winners foaled by Mejiro Dober (Mejiro
Ryan), the best filly from the 1994 Japanese crop. She
won four of her five juvenile starts, including the Gr.1
Hanshin Sansai Himba Stakes (now Hanshin Juvenile
Fillies’). At three, she recorded two thirds of the fillies’
Triple Crown, winning the Japanese Oaks and the Shuka
Sho after she ran second over the heavy ground in the
1000 Guineas. She had two more seasons and won the
Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth Commemorative Cup at four and
five, in her final start. She was retired with ten wins (five at
Gr.1 level) in 21 starts, earning more than ¥733 millions.
She has so far failed to produce a single Stakes performer,
but she has a two-year-old filly by Zenno Rob Roy and
was covered in 2013 by Rulership. This female line has
been developed in Japan since the early 1930s and
produced several group winners.
The eight year old Mejiro Charade has no yearling and
foal and she visited Rulership last season.

This was another winner for the in-form Dermot Weld yard,
which also took the Listed Tetrarch Stakes on the card,
with Flying Jib (Oasis Dream) carrying on where she left
off as a two-year-old, following up her win in a Curragh
Listed contest by reappearing to land this Gr.3 event in
good style, getting up late under a sympathetic ride to
beat Ballydoyle’s French recruit Peace Burg (Sageburg)
and Wannabe Better (Duke Of Marmalade). A return to
a mile will suit on this evidence and she could head for the
Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas next.
Flying Jib is the second foal of the Gr.2 Buena Vista

(Mizzen Mast), who also finished second in the Gr.1 Santa
Monica Handicap. The second dam Palisade (Gone

daughter of the Listed Cheshire Oaks winner and Gr.3

who also produced Gr.1 Manhattan Handicap-second
Boatman (Irish River), and the dam of the Gr.2 Churchill
Distaff Mile Stakes winner Aviate and the Gr.3 Prix La
Rochette winner and sire Early March, both by Dansili.
Peplum is a half-sister to the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas
winner Al Bahathri (Blushing Groom; dam of Gr.1
Champion Stakes winner and sire Haafhd and the Gr.2
Challenge Stakes winner and sire Munir), and the Gr.2
Diana Handicap winner Geraldine’s Store (Exclusive
Native), from the family of the Gr.1 winners, Lord
Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Magician (Galileo) made
a workmanlike winning seasonal reappearance. He was
set a fair bit to by Joseph O’Brien but asserted close home
to beat Parish Hall (Teofilo) and stablemate Hall Of

Ivors Rebel (Cockney Rebel), sixth on his debut at
Kempton Park last month, showed much improved form to
win on his second start, making all the running and staying
on strongly. He is the third foal out of Sopran Cross (Cape
Cross), a six-time winner in Italy. She is the sole winner from
three foals out of the dual Italian winner Tadoussac (Fairy
King), a half-sister to the Gr.2 (then) Prix d’Astarte, Gr.3 Prix
du Calvados and Listed Rose Bowl Stakes winner
Ascension (Night Shift), who is the dam of the Macau
Listed winner Si Foo (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Oakcrest
Drive (Arch), who was Listed-placed in Macau.
Sopran Cross has a yearling colt by Multiplex.
