President’s Message
The refreshing warm Florida sun prepared me for the busy agenda
awaiting my return. Thanks to the membership, these events are
coming together. Thank you to Ida Ferrelli, Rejeanne Sardo, Natalie
Gerasimchuk and Zorica Krasulja for filling in for me during my
absence.
The Barn Quilt continues to draw attention to WAAH. The Stoney
Creek News ran an article to complement the unveiling ceremony.
Stoney Creek United Church was very generous and helpful by adding more history
to the event.
Thanks to Zorica Krasulja and Amanda McKinney, who organized the exhibition
and the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts who arranged the Opening Celebration.
The “Rhythm & Colour” theme attracted many supportive friends and family,
who were treated to a great concert prior to the opening.
The Annual General Meeting gives us the opportunity to review our past year
and returning to the Liuna Gardens for a luncheon, makes for a special day.
Dr. Suzanne Crosta, Dean of Humanities at McMaster University will be our
guest and will talk to us about “Women communicating with Women”. We get
to eat and build the future together.
Due to low interest rates the Scholarship Fund needs to grow. Friends and family
are invited to attend the WAAH Lilac Festival Fashion Show fund raising event.
This is our major event of the year. Let’s make it the biggest yet.
July brings warm breezes and artists look for inspiration. Join us at Battlefield Park
for a Painting Pot Luck Social. You will also see the Barn Quilt in it’s new home.
Watch for details.
Your executive and committees have made this an amazing productive year.
Building, creating, and sharing is synonymous with artists. Pride in accomplishments is our stamp of approval.
Enjoy your summer.
Betty Petis, President WAAH

FEBRUARY MEETING @ THE GALLERY
Hamilton-born ceramicist Monika Minnis worked as an illustrator/graphic artist after majoring in Book Design and
Illustration at Sheridan College.
Over several years on her travels, and living in the Bahamas, she began incorporating her signature illustration style
with an interest in sculpture to develop a "functional art" pottery line, becoming known for her detailed sgraffito work.
Returning to her hometown 2 years ago, Monika’s ongoing interest in working with larger sculptural forms and
indigenous clays led to her involvement with helping to establish the first ever sculptor’s guild in Hamilton along
with Martin Kendrick.
Monica displayed several of her beautiful pieces at our meeting, and not only were they lovely to look at but wonderful
to touch. She very carefully carves designs into her work that adds a beautiful texture and tactile dimension to them.
Her love of “scratchboard” artwork was most evident in these pottery pieces. Monika will sometimes illustrate a scene on her work
and she also likes to “mix” different colours of clay together that often result in beautiful marble effect pieces. She has even
designed and created whimsical sinks that are a wonderful addition to your home bathroom!
Spiritual and magical images and icons play a very important part in her designs, and mermaids, owls, stars, etc... can be found on
almost all of her work. She also had some clay on hand and demonstrated a few of her techniques to the members. Monica offers
many adult and children’s workshops in her studio, and continues to create amazing one of a kind ceramic works of art.

MARCH MEETING @ THE GALLERY
Linda Montgomery, French born, is a respected Canadian artist, illustrator, and educator whose award-winning
pastel drawings and paintings have been admired and collected in numerous major corporate and private collections worldwide. Linda’s images have been exhibited and published internationally in over 30 magazines, such
as Good Housekeeping, New York Times, Homemakers, Chicago Tribune, Harrowsmith. Her client list includes
story illustration for over 20 book publishers, such as Hay House, MacMillian, Golden Books/St.Martins Press,
Doubleday, Random House, Workman Publishing. Linda also has serviced over 40 corporations, creating the artwork for the Aga Khan Foundation posters for 10 years for their annual Partnership walk. Linda and her artwork
are featured on the foundations video “A Global Journey” and all the original artworks are in the permanent
collection of the Aga Khan Foundation in Ottawa. Her major collections & clients include, Lipton/Unilever, Onex
Corporation, Aveda/Collega Corp, Milk Marketing Board, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals & Kraft. Linda teaches at the
OCAD University in Toronto, Canada.
Linda is now also a Liquitex Acrylic Artist Representative, and members of WAAH had the great pleasure of meeting with her as our March meeting guest speaker. Liquitex paints were created in 1955 with the aim to satisfy the needs of mural
painters. As Liquitex is the inventor of Acrylic paints the company continually strives to uphold the tradition of innovation and always
works to produce artist materials that not only satisfy, but stretch the creativity of artist’s imaginations.
Liquitex paints, mediums, and tools have been developed as a complete system to work on virtually all porous surfaces. Because all
of the acrylic paints and mediums have been formulated to intermix, artists can create an unlimited range of special effects: from
thick sculptural applications to thin permanent watercolors and everything in between. Linda had every medium available on hand to
demonstrate all the various techniques and ideas that are possible to create with Liquitex products. It was an exciting meeting as
ideas and demonstrations were presented to members and the possibilities that were un-folding in front of us were quite inspiring.
Linda is extremely creative and passionate about her art and the products that she was presenting to us, and 2 hours quickly flew by!
I don’t think that I am alone in thinking that I could have easily spent a few more hours with her learning more about these wonderful
paints and materials. We were all treated to a few samples of new paint colours that have been produced as well as product guides,
project cards and information booklets to help us along our artistic pathways. It was an inspiring evening!

MEET OUR MEMBERS
MEMBER BIO - HANNELORE BALZER
I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts at
the University of Manitoba in 1969 and my
Bachelor of Education in 1974. I studied
painting under Kenneth Lochhead
and Don Reichert at the University of Manitoba.
I was a long time member of The Winnipeg Art
Gallery and The Craft Guild of Manitoba. Besides
my Fine Arts Degree I have taken courses and
workshops in Asian Art, Chinese Calligraphy,
Watercolor, Ceramics, Pottery, Sculpture, Photography, and
Textiles. I have an extensive background in Art History and I have
been an Art Educator at the secondary and primary levels for
over 25 years. I am primarily a painter and I have worked mostly
in Acrylics but I love to explore a variety of mediums.
My husband and I moved from Winnipeg to Burlington in 2000
and I decided to retire from Teaching and devote my time to
developing my art. I have been a member of the Burlington Art Center and the Burlington Fine Arts
Association since 2000 and have volunteered as Gallery Attendant, A.I.C. Gallery Chair (now Lee Chin
Gallery), Kaleidoscope Representative and participant, Communications and Publicity representative
and in charge of exhibitions in the Fireside Lounge of the Burlington Art Centre from 2006 to 2013.
In spring 2007, I joined The Hamilton Women's Art Association and I am active as an exhibitor as
well as on the executive as Program Coordinator.
I enjoy working on a variety of subjects but I always return to the colours and rhythms of nature.
MEMBER BIO - Danuta Niton
Danuta was born in Poland, earning her diploma in
Commercial Art and Advertising before setting her
roots in Canada, more than 25 years ago.
Danuta expanded her studies by taking many
additional art courses ranging from Graphic Design,
Creative Watercolours/Acrylics, to the Artist Educator
Program.
Her portfolio includes a variety of media, such as:
computer graphic design; publishing a newspaper and a magazine;
oil and acrylic painting; watercolour; portraits in pencil; and creative
window painting, as well as huge wall artwork (murals) created
for private and commercial clients.
Currently, she lives, works and creates in her home studio in Dundas,
Ontario. She has a growing watercolour collection of historical buildings located in her town.
Artistic Statement: I capture places that mean a lot to me by painting them; like Dundas historical
buildings, some old ruins, playground by the lake, ice cream by the Williams Café, Tuscany scenery, etc.
This is my way of saying: I will never forget the people I went there with and the places I visited.
Her education led her to become a graphic artist but her heart is pointing toward many different
forms of art; like painting, drawing, and mural creation.
She is an owner of a graphic design and printing business, “Art of Design”, which serves Hamilton
businesses and many artists, by producing their promotional materials like business/post cards,
brochures, websites, banners, signs and more.
VELTA DZIRNE: A SALUTE TO A TRUE ARTIST BY ANITA WEITZMAN
VELTA DZIRNE, Born in 1913 in Rega, LATVIA, reached the age of 95 living in HAMILTON for twenty years.
She was an incredible artist who professionally made her living working in art, from ceramics to statues, birds,
and surrealistic artwork. For those who collected her work, they were always amazed at the quality and creativity
she displayed in her work which was snapped up immediately. Velta, her daughter and mother, came over to
Canada as displaced refugees, fleeing the war in Europe. The family moved to Hamilton to be with friends from Rega.
Velta worked at the Dundas Valley School of Art doing her sculpture and Art and exhibited at the Womens Art
Association in Hamilton, where she displayed her art and won many prizes. She was a proud member of the
WAAH for over 20 years. Wherever she displayed her work, she won awards and earlier this year her work was
accepted in a special show in Rega. Even though she did not return to Rega, her work and fame returned for
her for she was the only North American accepted in the show.
I was privileged to be her friend - she was fearless, feisty and funny - independent by nature and fearlessly
private, and tremendously talented. I will miss her, her spirit, her independent nature.
There was no pretense. She lived for her work - and her work will live long after her in the eyes of her collectors
and friends.

WAAH ART EXHIBITIONS
WAAH Exhibition: Rhythm & Colour
Everyone who was in attendance on Sunday,
March 24th at the Hamilton Conservatory for
the Arts, discovered they were in for a rare
treat for the senses.
Upon entering the building, we proceeded past the main desk
to view the wonderful art show entitled "Rhythm and Colour”.
The paintings lined the long hall way and were visually stimulating because of the intensity of the colours and use of
abstraction many of the artists had employed in interpreting
the theme.
Our climb up the many stairs to the concert hall at the top
of the building was richly rewarded by the quality of the performances that awaited us. Marcel and Elizabeth Bergmann
performed both classical and contemporary pieces in both
solo and duet form. One highlight, and I hesitate to designate
only one, was the performance of Marcel Bergmann's own
composition "Urban Pulse". The piece drew on classical jazz
rhythms and harmonies.
Don’t forget to take a photo before you
put your artwork behind glass.
The assault on our senses didn't stop there. We were asked
to adjourn to the first floor for food and wine. I was one
of the first to see the display of treats that awaited attendees and can only say it provided a fitting coda to such an
afternoon.
I spoke with one of Marcel Bergmann's piano performance
students from Mohawk Collage. The young man attended
the event with his uncle who is a retired piano teacher. Like
myself they were enraptured by the Bergmanns' performance
and were particularly thrilled with their interpretation of
Liszt's Mephisto Waltz as both were familiar with the
demanding mechanics of playing the piece as a solo,
let alone as a duo.
I congratulate the artists who participated in the show for
their bold and beautiful interpretations of the "Rhythm and
Colour" theme. Two works have been sold and there
is pormise of more sales.

SIX HONOURED &
VERY PROUD LADIES
With the support of the WAAH, I had the privilege of nominating six
of our Past Presidents for the Ontario Volunteer Service Awards
in recognition for their generosity and continuous volunteer service
with the Women’s Art Association of Hamilton. Committed volunteers
are the heart and soul of our Association and it is important and
commendable that they be recognized.
We are happy to congratulate Mary Toplack (30 years), Estelle Baxter,
Anne Bono, Mary Lewis and Annette Ray (20 years) & Nancy Moore
(15 years) on receiving the 2013 Ontario Volunteer Service Award
for their many years of dedicated volunteer service with the WAAH.
I was happy and pleased to witness the presentation ceremony
honouring our volunteers on April 15th. Our ladies were presented
with a Certificate and a stylized Ontario pin.
Mary Toplack was not able to attend because she is not very mobile.
Ida Ferrelli and I will visited Mary at her Retirement Residence and
give her the award.
We wish all our deserving recipients well.

A Retrospective. Hanson’s watercolors and acrylic paintings
are not only pleasing to the eye, but great pieces of visual
history. With confidence, he captured the City in transition
and the homes we once knew.
It has been almost a year and a half since the
WAAH website was re-built and re-designed
by member Josie Radoman and her son Zach
Radoman.
The new site is functioning well to keep members informed of coming events and upcoming
exhibitions etc. as well as serving to promote
our events, exhibitions and member’s art to the
public. It is important for the WAAH website to
have a substantial body of member’s work available for the
public to view in order to maintain their interest and keep
them coming back.
We currently have 11 members showcasing their work on
the Member’s Online Gallery (two more than last year). It was
decided that this year, should be a transition year, with the
plan that all exhibiting members will have the opportunity to be
represented as part of the member’s gallery. The details such
as how many paintings each member can display etc. are still
being determined.
A short questionnaire has been developed to determine what
members might be interested to participate in, or see on the
website. Space has been provided to also share some of your
own ideas. This form will be available at the Annual General
Meeting. If you are not able to attend, but wish to participate,
please email Josie Radoman ([email protected]) with your
request and a form will be emailed or mailed to you. The
results will be reviewed and considered. Your assistance
is greatly appreciated.
Please email the website liaison, Josie Radoman, information
about upcoming events, members art exhibitions, workshops
etc., that you would like posted in the calendar of events at
[email protected]. Also if you would like a link to your website in the member's gallery, please email Josie with your name
and the web address of your website plus a jpg of one of your
paintings. If you have any ideas about the website that you
think would benefit our organization, or help to promote our
exhibitions, and fund raising events, please also contact Josie
Radoman.
