The aim of the overall project, in which this survey is an important part, is to study the information given by the news media to the public, and how this information influences public’s knowledge and perception of political reality. The survey will let us study between and within country variations in political knowledge and public perception of political reality as well as respondent’s media exposure and attention. The battery of questions included in the survey span domestic and international issues, as well as soft and hard news topics. Background questions and questions related to media use, political interest, trust and party support is also included in the questionnaire. Linking this survey to an extensive content analysis of news output 1 prior to when the surveys were launched provides a good opportunity to study how variations in news content may effect public knowledge and perceptions. Two independent subsamples was created to study i) the effect of picture vs name recognition of people in the news and ii) the effect of a general vs a Muslim frame on questions related to immigration. The survey was launched on January 26th 2009 and completed on January 31st 2009. Six countries are included in this survey. These are the US, UK, Norway, Sweden, Belgium (Flandern) and The Netherlands. The country experts are represented by six research associates affiliated with the project. These include Shanto Iyengar (United States), James Curran (United Kingdom), Kees Aarts (the Netherlands), Peter van Aelst (Belgium/Flandern), Jesper Strömbäck (Sweden) and Anders Todal Jenssen (Norway). Toril Aalberg, Zan Strabac, Tove Brekken and Egbert Leppink (all at NTNU, Trondheim) have been responsible for the coordination of the questionnaires and the survey. The 6 country survey is web- based and was conducted by YouGovPolimetrix. Great care has been taken to create good weight variables to improve the socio-demographic distribution of respondents. Some of the questions have also been replicated on representative telephone samples in Norway and the United States (phone surveys were fielded by Gallup) within the same time span. Preliminary analysis suggests that there are fairly small differences between the distribution of answers provided by the web-respondents and the telephone-respondents (See Strabac forthcoming for further details) 2. 1 The two main TV-news broadcast and three different types of newspapers were studied in each country. Details about the content analysis can be found on the project website: http://www.svt.ntnu.no/iss/Toril.Aalberg/mediasystems.html 2 Zan Strabac ”Knowledge questions in internet and telephone surveys” (forthcoming). 2 The final samples from the six countries equals 1,000 individuals in each country. Sampling procedures for the web survey take a point of departure in the “panels” of “pools” of respondents who have agreed to participate in web surveys. In the USA for example, the panel is comprised of 1.1 million U.S. residents who have agreed to participate in YouGovPolimetrix’s Web surveys. The survey samples are drawn form these pools of respondents by applying a “matching algorithm” – a matching procedures that ensure that the sample resembles as close as possible a high quality random sample of the same population of the country. The technical details regarding the sampling procedures used can be obtained form the authors upon request, while some simplified descriptions of relevant final matching and weighting procedures are provided bellow. In the United States YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1278 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, race, and education. YouGovPolimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of the United States from the 2006 American Community Survey. In the United Kingdom YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1228 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, and education. Polimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of the United Kingdom from the 2001 Census. In Sweden YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1233 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, and education. Polimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of Sweden from Statistics Sweden. In Norway YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1240 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, and education. YouiGovPolimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of Norway from Statistics Norway. In the Netherlands YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1220 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, and education. YouGovPolimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of the Netherlands from Statistics Netherlands. In Belgium YouGovPolimetrix interviewed 1206 respondents who were then matched down to a sample of 1000 to produce the final dataset. The respondents were matched on gender, age, and education. YouGovPolimetrix then weighted the matched set of survey respondents to known marginals for the general population of Belgium from Statistics Belgium. The Norwegian Privacy Ombudsman (located at NSD, the Norwegian Social Science Data Archive) has evaluated the questionnaires and sampling procedures prior to fielding. They 3 recommend that the survey was launched. After the end of the project period (approximately 2012) the data will be made publicly available through the Norwegian Social Science Data Archive.
