Interviewing Derek (Course Director)
What is the objective of the MOTIS program?
To produce “hybrid managers” with the necessary knowledge and flexibility to understand
and work with complex information systems and the necessary relational skills to manage
the development of those systems within an enterprise or organization. And to do all of
that in an international context!
How do you see MOTIS in future from the Course
Directors perspective?
I see us developing more alternatives for the students,
by trying to integrate alternative pathways into the
course structure. In this way, students can “specialize”
in, for example, project management or business
intelligence.
What NEW things can the future students expect
from the course? Any new partnerships or
collaborations with companies or Universities?
Well, sometimes opportunities just arise out of
nowhere. So it’s important to be always alert for new
possibilities. My medium term aim would be to try
and set up some kind of joint degree with two or three
other universities, both in Europe and beyond. There are already a number of universities
that we work closely with – notably, Turku U in Finland and Masaryk U in Czech Republic –
and we are now in discussion with KIT (Karlsruhe) in Germany.
It would also be interesting to set up some form of collaboration whereby a given company
regularly sent us students from a branch abroad.
What is your overall experience about the course since the first batch (2009)?
Wonderful! I’ve learned far more than any of the students!
How is your experience for the 2015 Batch?
This year’s students – MoTIS 7 – are a little bit younger on average than previous years.
This means that on the one hand, they are a bit more passive in discussion, but on the
other, the work they produce has been to a consistently high standard. So our aim for
semester 2 is to keep these high standards but to encourage a bit more dynamic
interaction in the group. Hopefully the January project will have already started to get the
adrenalin flowing!

Also, presentation skills are very important
for the future of a project manager. Here
we have Klaudia, Imen, Lennart, Manauwar
and Ali Harris doing a presentation.
MoTIS allows students to develop a
completely new experience of
interaction with each other. Here we
have Andrea, Khadisha and Vijay
during January Project.
In the picture above, we can see Harshal,
Vijay, Kai and Ali Chegunian interacting with
the alumni MOTIS students.

Off course we cannot forget that we are in
Paris and meeting this “trésjolie” town is a
must for MoTIS students. Below, we have
the MoTIS7 group doing Derek’s tour in
Montmartre.
The mix of photos above shows us the
environment of the Integration Sessions with
Mike. Also, as MoTIS is not only about study
and working, we have below, a photo of
Christmas Party at Lennart’s house.
The tour continued to one of the most
important monuments of Paris: SacreCoeur. Here we can see the group climbing
that huge number of stairs to reach the
top.
And What About Paris? – Eduardo’s Testimony
“This was the city that I always dreamed to visit and, consequently, Paris was the main reason for me to join MOTIS.
Living in Paris was better than I ever imagine (and my expectation were very high since the beginning!). Here I can
meet a new beautiful place everyday and join several kind of events that I never expect. In Paris, we have the perfect
combination of art, music and that old bohemian style typical of the city. Off course I could talk about Eiffel Tower, Arc
of Triumph and Champs-Elysees as well as Louvre, Orsay or Versailles but in fact what really fascinates me in Paris is
that I don’t need to go to a specific place at a specific time to experiment a good life event, instead it can happen in
any place or any street of this city. I love that unpredictability!
My calendar says that I lived here during 5 months but I can’t believe it. I met so many interesting people and I went
to so many incredible places that I must have been here during 5 years. I’m leaving now knowing that I’ll be back
soon.”

January Project
January is always a full month in MoTIS
life. This is a period where the students
have four weeks to work, in teams, on a
project chosen by them. MoTIS7 had four
more teams apart from newsletter’s team,
working on a project during January:
Coddata, PaperPal, Like&Share and
WebChef.
Team Coddata – MoTIS Database System
This team aimed to provide organized,
structured and managed data of MoTIS
students to the administration in order to
help them to get more information in less
time. The team composed of: Harshal,
Arminjola and Ali Harris.
Team PaperPal– Refugees Platform
PaperPal is supposed to be a solution that
helps incoming refugees in France to go
go through all bureaucratic procedures in
order to get all the permissions to live in
the new country. The team composed of:
Kai, Lennart, Rohit, Fatima and Ali
Chegunian.
Team Like&Share– Social Media
Like&Share aimed to boost and maintain all
the MoTIS promotion on social networks,
creating several pages and links. The team
composed of: Andrea, Juan, Kalyani,
Khadisha and Vijay.
Team WebChef – MoTIS Portal
The MoTIS portal aimed to provide a
platform for all MoTIS students (alumni,
current and future) in the form of a social
community allowing the share of
information,experiences and opportunities.
The team composed of: Hiren, Imen, Janak
and Manauwar.

“My overall MoTIS experience was good, MoTIS exposed me to different cultures and different type of people.
When I decided to come to France the target was finding a job here and staying as long as I can in Paris. Well MoTIS
was the channel for this. MoTIS was the introduction to the French experience. When you come to a new country, you
face new types of challenges, you are out of your comfort zone and there are a lot of things to do that you don't know
how to do them. The overall of my personal experience of staying in Paris was great, I have nothing here to complain
about. I never felt homesick, MoTIS was my big family and if I had the chance to go back in time and choose which
program I want to do in Paris I would have chosen MoTIS another time. I am French educated, this is why I chose Paris
as my Masters destination. You need to have an average level of French in France, just like in any country, you have to
have an average level of their language. But if you contact the right people and apply to the right jobs surviving
without the French Language is not that hard.” – NabihChamas
“It was an amazing experience with MoTIS to study in a multicultural environment with so many different
nationalities. The perfectly framed syllabus that covered all required topics is a true blend of ‘Management’ and ‘IT’.
MoTIS program also includes online courses and certifications that makes a highly positive impact on the CV.
Working for the first time in a multicultural team and getting through successfully was a challenge.I love Paris, it is
so big that I haven’t yet explored it completely. Paris is full of energy, enthusiasm and lights. With nice and helpful
people around, there are events taking place throughout the year that makes life happy and colorful. My level of
French was intermediate and I could comfortably take myself through daily conversations. It is possible to survive
without knowing French but good command on French will certainly prove to be an advantage both socially and
professionally.” – Mayuresh Mane
“Thanks to MoTIS, I have had the chance to meet amazing people who became my dearest friends. It has definitely
raised my cultural awareness. That was not easy at all when I first arrived in Paris and social integration takes quite
some time. As for the academic program itself, I have always appreciated that we analyzed real life business
examples and developed a pragmatic point of view. We were united in diversity, and even if everyone had its own
mindsets, in MoTIS we could easily drop the cultural barriers. Paris had its ups and downs, but it has been a
remarkable experience in the overall. The city is lovable, lots to see and you always want to discover more. I have
fully enjoyed life in here, and I think that no matter where I will be living in the future, Paris will rank among the
bests. Also I didn’t face the same challenges as someone that doesn’t speak French at all. Speaking French made my
surviving in Paris easier and enjoyable.” – DenisaIsufaj
