Back to reality. No more lying on the Beach, basking in the sun and not worrying about how to dress for the weather. We are down to the wire for the Quilt Show. I hope all the different venues are filled with members’ names and times. This will be the last meeting before the Show and I would like to stress the importance of having everything finalized. I would like, again, to thank everyone who has put their time and effort into making this Show the best yet. Thank you for your generous support. Grace 1 NEW MEMBERS GUESTS Theresa Pomerleau Norma Gorling Karen Lukaszewicz Lisa Weagle Marlene Wedlock Ann Kemp Pat Williams Ann Walker WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON GROUP/CLASS Remember - no teaching class - it will be an afternoon free of interruptions to work on those last minute items for the quilt show. Great opportunity to put tables together for pinning a quilt, etc… At the April meeting Barb will show the sample of “Zig Zag Rail Fence” for those of you who didn’t see what we’ll be working on in May’s afternoon class. A Little Note from the editor… Heather Fraser informed me at the March meeting she’d received some complaints that too much space in the past newsletters had been devoted to the Quilt Show. The Quilt Show is an important part of our Guild and as such is entitled to the space needed, if available… with plenty of space, due to a lack of contributions otherwise, the Quilt Show will again receive a couple of pages. After April, hopefully there will be input from other members with - stories, helpful hints, a comment about a quilt related book read, or pattern/s found, that could be recommended. There are many ways you can contribute to the newsletter so start jotting down what you’d like to submit… otherwise the newsletter is going to become very small… This month I received a Quilt Word Scramble which I happily placed on page 6, I’d love to give credit to the lady who submitted it, if she’d like. It would likewise be your choice, whether your name is added to your submission/s. Please contribute to YOUR newsletter by giving/sending me articles, pictures etc… Thanks, Mo TANGLED THREADS QUILT SHOPPE Tel/Fax: 705 - 876 - 8707 Toll Free: 1- 866 - 976 - 8707 Classes for all levels (Let us know what inspires you & we’ll offer it if the demand is out there!) ……..”Party with Patrick Quilt Club”…….. I’m sure many of the women could identify with that one! The poem “Quilt of Life” was a nice thought provoking piece. Also, a thank you to the hospitality women. They are doing a great job with their cookies and biscuits selection. The addition of the “LifeStyle” cookies was much appreciated this past month. To the member who gave me the ‘Qulting Word Scramble’ to use in the newsletter… thank you I would love to give you credit for it, if you wish. Just let me know…. We would also like to see lots of quilts for Show & Tell so that they can see the amazing work the members do. Anybody who is being interviewed will be notified ahead of time to make sure that they are okay with it, as some people, like myself, are camera shy and don’t like doing it. Let’s make this a great show for TV, as we do need the publicity for the Quilt Show. Quilters can use them to help select coordinating fabrics for a quilt. Cut a swatch of the fabric including the dots and keep it in your purse when you shop. Match fabrics to the dots to help you make the choices for your next quilt. Before 1970, quilts were considered a craft. After a number of museums created exhibits of quilts, people began to consider quilting an art form. German pioneers dyed cloth brown by using bark from the butternut tree. Hemlock and elder combined with alum mordant were used to make reddish brown. Pillow Power - find a firm pillow to place in your lap while you appliqué. Rest your hands on the pillow as you stitch or do handwork. The pillow will provide support for your wrists, arms, and shoulders. You will find yourself sitting up straighter, and the work will be closer to your eyes. As a bonus, the pillow can also be used as a big pincushion. Renewed interest in quilting boomed because of the 1976 bicentennial. Public buildings around the nation displayed quilts because of their historical significance. The celebration drew attention to our American heritage and crafts, especially quilts. Controlling Fraying Threads - control fraying threads at inside points by using a little glue stick on your needle. Move your needle over the glue stick, just getting a little glue on the tip of your needle. Quickly sweep the needle between the seam allowance and the background fabric, tucking any frayed threads behind the appliqué piece. The little dab of glue from the needle will transfer to the seam allowance and hold the frayed edges in place while you sew them down securely. Storing quilts for a long time in contact with wood or acidic paper can cause brown stains. 7 MEETING CHECK LIST Name Tag Library Books Show & Tell Coffee Mug Quilts for Helping Hands/Victoria’s Quilts Cash for 50/50 draw - tickets will only be sold before the beginning of the meetings.
